Welcome to
Gouda
“Step into this world and discover
the historic town centre with its
centuries-old history.”
2
Welcome to Gouda
Gouda is inextricably associated with its famous
cheese, one of the most important and wellknown export products of the Netherlands. On
Thursday mornings, from April to and including
August, the past repeats itself.
Visitors can witness the ins and outs of cheese
trading at the Gouda Cheese Market. But
the town is also known around the world for
its treacle waffles, the Gouda pipes and Gouda
ceramics. Gouda candles proudly burn every year
during the popular Gouda by Candlelight festival.
Step into this world and discover the historic town
centre with its centuries-old history. Admire the
picturesque town hall, the famous stained-glass
windows of Sint-Janskerk (St. John’s Church) and
the atmospheric canals with their sidewalk cafes.
The Gouda Tourist Information Office
(VVV) is there to help!
You will find us on the Markt (the central market
square), in the Goudse Waag. There, you can
choose from a variety of street plans and hiking
and bicycle routes. The friendly staff will gladly
tell you about Gouda and provide information
about its culture, history, night life, overnight
stays, shopping and fun activities with children.
This brochure points the way to some of the
town’s highlights.

Highlights
Discover the Hidden Treasures of Gouda
Explore the town at your own pace. Stroll down
the Goudse Waag (Gouda Weigh House) to the
Van Den Berg Patisserie, wander via the Cinq
courtyard to the Kleiweg, along the Tiendeweg
and back. You will be amazed by what you see.
Besides the irresistible taste of Gouda cheese,
the treacle waffles will leave your mouth
watering. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Once
you have tasted the delights of Gouda, literally
and figuratively, you might never want to leave.
Welcome to Gouda!
Wander through the town and visit the many
charming courtyards, the oldest of which stems
from 1449. These tranquil sanctuaries in the town
traditionally provided housing for the elderly where one can drift off, far from the hectic world
of the present. The handsome archways and neat
gardens with plants and flowers are a pleasure to
behold.
On the reverse side of this brochure is a street
plan showing the most interesting places of the
city. At the VVV you will also find various maps,
hiking and bicycle routes, such as the Gouda
Specialities route, Discover Gouda’s harbour area
and the Cow-Cheese bicycle route. You can also
find several routes in the ‘xplre Gouda app’ .
Culture & History
Gouda is an imposing, historic town. In the town
centre one can see much of Gouda’s rich history
and versatile culture - from historic buildings to
museums and galleries with modern art.

The Town Hall 1
During the summer of 1438, a devastating
fire reduced the then town of Gouda
virtually to ashes. The town hall suffered
heavy damage. The town council decided that the
new town hall should be freestanding. It chose a
new location on the market field, which was little
more than a sodden peat bog at the time. Feel
free to visit the Town Hall with its magnificent
wedding room, the mayor’s office and council
chamber. On the right facing wall you can see the
carillon with mechanical puppets, which were
added in 1961. The leading figure in the carillon
is Floris V, who granted Gouda its town charter
in 1272. Every two minutes of each half hour,
the carillon will provide a lovely spectacle, as the
puppets begin to move.

Sint-Janskerk & Gouda Glass 3
The first mention of Sint-Janskerk was
found in documents from the year 1280,
but the current church was built after the great
fire of 1552. It was named after John the Baptist,
the patron saint of Gouda. With its 123 metres,
it is the longest church in the Netherlands. The
church is also world renowned for its Gouda
glass. These stained-glass windows, particularly
those from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance,
display scenes from the Bible and from Dutch
history.

famous Gouda Glass, you can take an audio

Sint-Janskerk
THE LONGEST CHURCH IN THE NETHERLANDS
When you walk past Sint-Janskerk, you
cannot help but notice how long it is: with
its 123 metres, it is the longest church in the
Netherlands. Many medieval towns did their
best to build the highest church in the land,
but in Gouda’s soft soil length was the better
choice. If you stand in the centre of the church,
you can experiece the building’s enormous
proportions. Majestic pillars have supported
this church for centuries. If only these pillars
could talk!
in the window. You can see the images of
bishops, Golden Fleece Knights and even
kings such as Philip II of Spain and Mary Tudo
of England. Because many people could not
read, a type of pictography was employed
that everyone at the time understood. The
dog, a symbol of faithfulness, reappears in
some 20 windows. However, at the foot of the
corrupt king Herodes lies a bear - symbol of
iniquity and sin. What a remarkable historical
depiction one can ‘read’ in the stained-glass
windows of Sint-Janskerk.
GOUDA GLASS IS WORLD RENOWNED
When you stand outside you see dark, almost
black windows. It is precisely these church
windows that form the greatest treasure of
Sint-Janskerk. Their full glory is revealed the
moment you enter the church. The Gouda
Glass, as the 72 stained-glass windows are
called, were mainly made in the 16th century.
They depict Biblical and historical events in
comic strip form.
THE SECRET BEHIND THE WINDOW:
COME, HAVE A LOOK!
Traditional Dutch craftsmanship of four
centuries ago can still be admired today.
It is rather remarkable that something
as vulnerable as glass somehow survived
all those years of storms and wars. In the
exposition there is an explanation of how that
happened and how, fortunately, one managed
to preserve the Gouda Glass until this very day.
QUEENS AND BEARS
As it was quite expensive to make stainedglass windows, wealthy clergymen and nobles
were invited to sponsor a window. In return,
their images were prominently engrained
Visitors who want to see Sint-Janskerk on
Sundays can only do so by attending a church
service, at 10.00 or at 17.00 hours. For the
concert schedule, church tours and topical
information, see www.sintjan.com.

Brasserie - Bar De Zalm
Brasserie Bar De Zalm is no doubt among

but has never lost its own wayward grandeur.
If you would like to experience a traditional
brasserie with a variety of remarkable
dishes from the French cuisine with Dutch
hospitality, a visit to De Zalm any time of day,
seven days a week is well worth the effort. De

TREACLE WAFFELS 19
Is there a Dutch person
anywhere who is not familiar with the
treacle waffle? At one time or another,
everyone in the Netherlands has sunk their
teeth in this biscuit, the original name of
which is a syrup waffle. The delicacy was
first made at the beginning of the 19th
century in Gouda. Discovered in 1840
among the oldest recipes, the treacle
recipe called for the waffles to be baked
from leftover dough and crumbs and filled
with syrup.
Patisserie Van Den Berg specialises in baking
the ‘Gouda treacle waffle’ according to an
ancient, still secret recipe. Besides these
renowned cakes, Van Den Berg also offers
other treacle-waffle specialities that you will
not want to miss:
The real ‘Gouda Treacle-waffle Liqueur’
A splendidly sweet liqueur with a cup
of coffee or as an after-dinner drink. The
‘Gouda Treacle-waffle Liqueur’ comes in
various sizes.
The ‘Treacle-waffle Chocolate Truffels’
The truffels are packed in various ways so
that they are easy to take home or give as
gifts.
The bakers at Banketbakkerij Van Den
Berg (specialising in pastries and cakes)
will show you how the waffles are made.
If you wish, you can also try baking them
yourself during the appetizing workshop

the best examples of which are on display in
Catharina Hall.
In the depot you can see the most diversified
objects. The extremely rare Art Deco vases
will hold you spellbound. During a visit to the
display, you will appreciate the diversity of past
production. You might even discover a vase or
plate that you have had at home for years.
The Gouda Ceramics Days (14 and 15 May)
During Ascension Day and the day after, the
Gouda Ceramics Days provide a popular,
recurring second-day event with domestic and
international ceramics. More than 100 clay artists
take part in the event. Participants exhibit and
sell their works at the inviting market squire
around the splendid medieval town hall.
GOUDA PIPES
A Gouda pipe is a tobacco pipe made of stone,
which many men smoked in the 18th century.
In 1606, English mercenaries arrived in the
Netherlands as reinforcements for Gouda. They
taught the people of Gouda how to make the
pipes. Later, in 1660, the Guild of Gouda Pipe
Makers was founded. With the arrival of wooden
pipes, the cigar and popularity of cigarettes, the
trade seemed to be dying out - but the opposite
was true. You can obtain a map of the route for
the ‘Gouda Pipe’ town walk at the Gouda Tourist
Office. See www.goudsepijp.nl.

Water
Gouda is a typical Dutch town that has for
centuries been inextricably associated with the
water of the Holland IJssel and the Gouwe. The
town centre has a special network of intimate,
almost cryptic watercourses. A visit to Gouda’s
town centre with its restored sluices and bridges
- not to mention its works of art in the water - will
certainly be worth your while.
medium-sized boats can moor at the Turfsingel,
the Gouwe, the Regentessenplantsoen, the
Haven and the IJsselkade. Yachts larger than 12
metres can be moored at the Turfsingel. If you are
the proud owner of a historic ship, you can join
the other floating gems in the Museum Harbour,
where mooring is free during the summer. The
map shows the exact berths and facilities offered.
Monumental Ships
Gouda played a major role in shipping as early
as the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, with
its central location, the town offered passage to
ships en route to Amsterdam and Flanders.
After the 15th century, Gouda’s role in
international shipping went into decline. Today,
in stately poses along the Museum Harbour,
you can still find historic clippers, barges,
tjalken (Dutch sailing vessel with characteristic
spritsail), tugboats and straight-stem barges,
still lived in by bargee’s families.

Discover gouda’s harbour quarter
In Gouda’s Harbour Quarter you will find
monumental canals, the Harbour Museum
with authentic ships and the Harbour Mueum
Pub. You can stroll down narrow streets with
characteristic facades and enjoy the view of
the Holland IJssel river. This area of Gouda may
be the best-kept secret of the town.
During your walk, discover the cosy restaurants
and pubs that serve meals. Pay a visit to the
various galleries or take a break and visit
Museum Gouda. You will also find some uique
studios (with contemporary and traditional
art, such as Delftware painting, ceramics,
floral art, book binding, silver-and-goldsmiths
and framemakers) and special companies (the
22
Punselie Cookie Comapny and a bottler), along
with specialist shops (musical instruments,
special beers, confectionary, antiques,
antiques and collectibles and curiosa) that
remind one of the ambiance of small streets
in Amsterdam, where it is pleasant to walk
around and spend time.
In the free brochure, ‘Discover Gouda’s
Harbour Quarter’ you will find a planned
route with addresses and supplementary
information about its history and many other
tourist attractions. You can obtain a copy of
the brochure from the VVV or at one of the
specialist shops, restaurants and studios in
Gouda’s Harbour Quarter.
