Why are we here?
It’s a big question, and one that many of us spend a lifetime answering. For Friends of Youth the answer has been
clear for 61 years—we are here because children need us.
Megan’s childhood has been hard. Her family was referred to Child Protective Services 42 times before she was
placed in foster care. She was 6.
When Megan was 11 she and her siblings were placed with an aunt who was unable to manage Megan’s increasingly
difficult behaviors. Megan ended up assaulting her aunt, went to juvenile detention, then to a group home. Recently,
she moved into one of our therapeutic foster homes.
Residential Treatment
Megan now has a Friends of Youth case aide and case manager, and a wonderful foster mother. Megan has
learned how to successfully live in a family setting. She has a strong relationship with her foster mother, and this
past July she went to summer camp. Megan tells us this was the first time she felt like a “normal” kid; no one knew
she was in foster care or that she “had to see a therapist.” She loved it!
Megan is why we’re here.
This past year 5,146 kids needed us. We were there, providing counseling for youth struggling in middle school,
supporting teen moms as they figured out how to be good parents, helping homeless young adults find a place to
sleep, a job or a first apartment. We were there when a local high school student became addicted to heroin, there
when a traumatized foster child needed support, there when a 17 year old ran away from home and discovered that
trying to find a safe place to sleep was a terrifying experience.
Why are you here?
While we can’t answer that question for you, we believe that at least a part of the answer is because Friends of Youth
needs you. Donors, volunteers, grantors, advocates and supporters—we need caring partners to accomplish our
mission. We spend over 83% of every dollar on our programs, we hire the most caring, educated and qualified staff,
we run a fiscally healthy organization, and we remain firmly committed to responding to the children who need us. We
couldn’t do any of it without you.
