Jose sought support from the PAPÁS Program and with
encouragement found the strength and esteem he needed
to gain joint custody of his son and daughter. He continued to
participate in PAPÁS two or three times a week and began to
understand the importance of setting aside disagreements with
his children’s mother and focus on the happiness of their children.
In addition to working as an electrician, Jose has a 14 hour a
month position as a project assistant at PAPÁS. He also regularly
volunteers, providing other fathers the encouragement and tools

PAPÁS, the Gift of a Father’s Love
“We are doing well. It has been two years and it is like we have
a fresh friendship, our relationship revolves around what is best
for our kids.” Jose explained. “PAPÁS saved my life, my wings were
clipped and now I can fly. I know what is most important. My
children come first, then me, and then giving back to PAPÁS and
supporting other fathers.“

Shadowbrook Benefit Dinner
Week of the Child Free Family Fun Fair
Please save Tuesday, March 13th to dine at
the Shadowbrook Restaurant on behalf of
Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center for
our 4th Annual Giving O’ the Green benefit.
Join us on Saturday, April 14 from 11:00 am to
2:00 pm in San Lorenzo Park for Child and Family
Development Programs’ second annual Week of the
Child Free Family Fun Fair and Parade!
The dining room opens at 5:00 pm and
the last reservation will be taken at 8:45 pm. You can also dine in the bar.
Shadowbrook generously donates 33% of the evening’s receipts for those
who indicate that they are dining on behalf of SCCCC.
There will be children’s activities, healthy snacks,
fun games and crafts, and live performances by Dr.
Pete the Singing Scientist and others. Wear your
costumes and join in the storybook fun!

• Strawberry Festival: Sí Se Puede residents raised $1,900 selling
hand-dipped chocolate-covered strawberries and assisting with
festival logistics.
• Payless Shoes provided certificates for 100 pairs
of shoes for preschool children whose families did
not have the resources to provide their children wellfitting and warm shoes.
• Human Race: Residents and supporters of CRS’ residential
programs raised $1,400 participating in the Human Race.
• Comerica Bank sponsored a campaign to raise
funds to purchase car seats and provide safety
instruction for low-income families with young
children.
• Caroling: Santa Cruz Residential Recovery residents brought song
and holiday cheer to five nursing and assisted living homes.

household supplies for foster youth moving into their own homes for the first time.
• Supporting Farm Worker Youth and Families: A $15,000 grant award from the
Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and $10,000 of funding from
Driscoll’s Charitable Fund provided a huge boost to Youth Services’ Nuestro Futuro
Program which serves farm worker youth and their families.
• Equinox: A musical play written by Armand Ruby and performed by River Street Shelter residents and
community members raised $1,000 for the River Street Shelter.

and Wings of Santa Cruz and Knitzvah of Jewish Family Services of
the Silicon Valley provided luggage and clothing for our Transition Age Foster Youth.
• Vintage Faith Church volunteers have completed painting and landscaping projects and are continuing to
schedule work days to help with maintenance at our residential programs throughout the coming year.
• Monterey Peninsula Foundation provided a $5,000 grant to Youth Services
to support youth who have met their counseling goals and are ready to further their
educational, vocational and creative aspirations through mentorship and volunteer
service in the community.
• Holiday Giving: We want to express our gratitude to everyone who helped brighten the holidays for the youth
and children participating in Youth Services programs. Your kindness provided personalized gifts for 33 teens, and
66 toys from Toys R Us brought smiles to the faces of the younger children.
• 100+ Women Who Care gave $5,800
in support of the YES School. These funds
helped assure that new experiences and
clean and sober activities remain a vital
part of the YES experience.
• Poetry for Protection, a youth poetry slam,
raised $395 for the River Street Shelter and was the
inspiration of Laura Melton, an 11-year-old who
wanted to help the homeless.
• Temple Beth El’s MAZON Project has
provided Sunday dinner to River Street Shelter
residents for over 25 years.
• Wharf to Wharf: YES School students
and supporters raised $800 running,
walking and pledging. Thank you all for
making the annual snow trip a success.

Program which serves farm worker youth and their families.

• Holiday Giving: We want to express our gratitude to everyone who helped brighten the holidays for the youth
and children participating in Youth Services programs. Your kindness provided personalized gifts for 33 teens, and
66 toys from Toys R Us brought smiles to the faces of the younger children.
• 100+ Women Who Care gave $5,800
in support of the YES School. These funds
helped assure that new experiences and
clean and sober activities remain a vital
part of the YES experience.
• Poetry for Protection, a youth poetry slam,
raised $395 for the River Street Shelter and was the
inspiration of Laura Melton, an 11-year-old who
wanted to help the homeless.
• Temple Beth El’s MAZON Project has
provided Sunday dinner to River Street Shelter
residents for over 25 years.
• Wharf to Wharf: YES School students
and supporters raised $800 running,

Jose sought support from the PAPÁS Program and with
encouragement found the strength and esteem he needed
to gain joint custody of his son and daughter. He continued to
participate in PAPÁS two or three times a week and began to
understand the importance of setting aside disagreements with
his children’s mother and focus on the happiness of their children.
In addition to working as an electrician, Jose has a 14 hour a
month position as a project assistant at PAPÁS. He also regularly
volunteers, providing other fathers the encouragement and tools

“We are doing well. It has been two years and it is like we have
a fresh friendship, our relationship revolves around what is best
for our kids.” Jose explained. “PAPÁS saved my life, my wings were
clipped and now I can fly. I know what is most important. My
children come first, then me, and then giving back to PAPÁS and
supporting other fathers.“

Jose sought support from the PAPÁS Program and with
encouragement found the strength and esteem he needed
to gain joint custody of his son and daughter. He continued to
participate in PAPÁS two or three times a week and began to
understand the importance of setting aside disagreements with
his children’s mother and focus on the happiness of their children.
In addition to working as an electrician, Jose has a 14 hour a
month position as a project assistant at PAPÁS. He also regularly
volunteers, providing other fathers the encouragement and tools

“We are doing well. It has been two years and it is like we have
a fresh friendship, our relationship revolves around what is best
for our kids.” Jose explained. “PAPÁS saved my life, my wings were
clipped and now I can fly. I know what is most important. My
children come first, then me, and then giving back to PAPÁS and
supporting other fathers.“

Shadowbrook Benefit Dinner
Week of the Child Free Family Fun Fair
Please save Tuesday, March 13th to dine at
the Shadowbrook Restaurant on behalf of
Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center for
our 4th Annual Giving O’ the Green benefit.
Join us on Saturday, April 14 from 11:00 am to
2:00 pm in San Lorenzo Park for Child and Family
Development Programs’ second annual Week of the
Child Free Family Fun Fair and Parade!
The dining room opens at 5:00 pm and
the last reservation will be taken at 8:45 pm. You can also dine in the bar.
Shadowbrook generously donates 33% of the evening’s receipts for those
who indicate that they are dining on behalf of SCCCC.
There will be children’s activities, healthy snacks,
fun games and crafts, and live performances by Dr.
Pete the Singing Scientist and others. Wear your
