What is Higher Education?
Higher education encompasses a diverse range of courses and qualifications such as
Masters and Honours degrees, Foundation degrees, Higher National Diplomas and
Certificates as well as professional qualifications.
The term ‘higher education’ includes all university-level education at Level
4 or above and involves studying for a degree or similar advanced
qualification. All courses at Level 3 or below are classed as further
education. Higher education is open to students usually aged over
18 – there is no upper age limit!
Swindon College
Swindon College is one of the largest higher education providers in
Wiltshire and has successfully been delivering higher education
qualifications in Swindon since 1904.
Higher Education:

Will improve your career and earning potential, as well as allow
you to gain specialist knowledge in an area which really interests you.

Can offer a vocational programme that is directly related to
particular work areas such as accountancy, sports science or teaching.

Is essential for some careers; for example chartered engineering
and architecture.

Will bring together students from a variety of backgrounds.
This interaction can enrich the learning process through sharing
experience and knowledge.

is a great environment in which to study and incorporates a library, study
centres and a quiet space. The library houses over 32,000 books as well as

Internet access and extensive online research resources are available on all
LRC computers. Users with visual impairment and other specific needs will
find a range of specialist software and equipment available.
HE students can access the HE Student Centre at any time during the
college day to study and socialise with friends. The Centre has a 42”
Each curriculum area also has its own Learning Advisor, who will be your

plus an adjoining computer suite.

Why choose us?
BE A NAME AND NOT A NUMBER
ESCAPE THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE
As we aren’t a university your lectures
are taught in small groups with
dedicated tutors allowing individual
support and high levels of success.
“
STAMP OF APPROVAL
The classes are smaller
than at a university so we
all have individual support
from the lecturers.

Business Student
WHY PAY MORE?
Our fees are considerably lower than
those you would pay at university.
HE programmes entitle you to a Student
Loan or 24 + Advanced Learning Loan
which you only start to pay back when you
are earning over £21,000 per year
(see page 14 for more details).
8
We have our own dedicated HE Centre where you can go for some
quiet time or to study; there are computers available and facilities that will
enable you to use your own laptop. Just around the corner is our HE Team,
who are there to support you throughout your studies.
Telephone: (01793) 491591 | email: [email protected]
Our Degrees and Foundation Degrees are awarded by our university
partners, meaning you study in Swindon but your qualification is with them.
We also work with Edexcel and VTCT as awarding bodies.
MAKE THE MOST OF OUR FACILITIES
We continue to invest in purpose-built facilities to help give you a better
learning experience. Our on-site facilities include the Library (LRC),
Nursery and HE Centre, not to mention
the state-of-the-art industry-standard
facilities within each subject area.
GUIDANCE WITH YOU IN MIND
We can provide impartial advice and
support with careers and job-seeking, all
with your future in mind. Not only will you
gain a university degree or higher level
award, but you will improve your skills in
communication, presentation, IT and
literacy, all of which improve your chances
of gaining employment or promotion
within your existing employment after
study.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Swindon is an ideal location for many
travel links. The College is located just a
short walk from the town centre, Outlet
Village, train station, bus station and just
a short drive from junction 16 off the M4.
QUALITY PROVISION
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)
for Higher Education visited Swindon
College and judged that the academic
standards, the quality and enhancement
of its student learning opportunities and
the quality of its information about
learning opportunities all meet UK
expectations.
The review identified a number of examples of good practice. These
include: strong support for student progression into higher education,
and a commitment to the employability of students, including the
comprehensive links the College has developed with a range of local
employers.
SUPPORTING YOU!
Our aim is for you to learn in an environment where you feel fully
supported. We have a Student
Engagement team on-site and they’re
here to ensure you receive all the support
you need both inside and outside of your
studies at college. Alternatively, you can
help to make improvements and support
the views of yourself and your fellow
students by joining YOUR Student
Union, becoming a Course
Representative or a Student Ambassador.

A step-by-step guide
to applying through...
UCAS - How does it work?
UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) centrally
manages full time applications to higher education institutions in the UK.
Full Time Courses
Swindon College and its partner institution Oxford Brookes University
process their full time HE applications for Swindon College through UCAS.
UCAS Institution Codes:
S98 – Swindon College
O66 – Oxford Brookes University
UCAS Application fee:
Postgraduate Courses
Applications for Masters Degrees should be made through UKPASS
www.ukpass.ac.uk, the postgraduate application service also run by
UCAS. Our postgraduate courses are listed under Oxford Brookes
University.

TIMELINE FOR UCAS
February-July
RESEARCH
Make sure you research your options carefully. Try and visit university and
college Open Days which will help you decide what and where you would
really like to study. Also ensure you can meet the entry requirements.
June – January
APPLYING
Applications are made to UCAS during this period and are submitted online.
The Swindon College Careers Team will help you with your application and
with writing your personal statement, which is the most important part.
Mid-October
This is the deadline for applications to Oxford, Cambridge and all Medicine,
Dentistry and Veterinary choices (but not Nursing).
Mid-December
By this time you should have paid your fee to UCAS and submitted your
finished application to the Careers Team at Swindon College if you are an
existing student. This allows four weeks for us to check your application and
to write your reference. Although this is not the deadline, the sooner you can
get your application in the better!
Mid-January
This is the deadline for UCAS to receive your application. If you have applied
via the Careers Team by the mid-December deadline, they will send your
application off for you to meet this deadline. If you miss this deadline, you can
still apply - contact us for advice.
You should apply for your Student Loan as soon as the process opens in
January.
Don’t wait until you have received any offers as this could delay your Loans.
There are two available, one to pay your Tuition Fee and one to help with
living expenses while you are studying. Visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance for
more information.
January-May
OFFERS AND ACCEPTANCE
This is when universities and colleges will generally make decisions on
applications and send out offers to applicants. When you have received all
of your offers, you will need to make one of them your Firm Offer (the one
you want most) and make one an Insurance Offer (a back-up choice in case
you don’t meet the requirements for your Firm Offer). Don’t miss the date to
respond or your choices will be cancelled.
It is also important during this time to find out about any financial assistance
which might be available to you as a student. This includes bursaries, which
are grants from your university or college which don’t have to be paid back.
July-August
RESULTS
BTEC results start to be sent out in mid-July
and A Level results are released in
mid-August. If you receive your results
and they meet the conditions of your Firm
Choice then you don’t need to do anything
else - your place is secured. If you aren’t
going to meet the conditions of your Firm
or Insurance Offers, it’s still worth
contacting your first choice if you were
close to the offer grade, and asking if they
will still accept you, otherwise you
automatically get your Insurance choice if you have met their entry
requirements. If you weren’t holding any offers, you have the option of
entering Clearing. This is the process where students are matched with
institutions that still have places remaining, see www.ucas.com for more
information.

Your Finances...
Study now, pay later
Ÿ You don’t have to pay for your course upfront
Ÿ You can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fee, which you
only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 per year
(eligibility criteria apply*)
Ÿ You repay 9% of your income above £21,000 only. So, for example, if your
salary was £25,000, the 9% would only apply to £4,000, meaning you
would repay £30 per month
Ÿ If your salary falls below £21,000 - for example, if you take a career break or
are unemployed, your repayments stop. Repayments only start again
when you are earning over £21,000 again
Ÿ If you have not repaid your loan after 30 years it is written off.
Financial Information
If you are a new student you need to visit the Student Finance government
web site: www.gov.uk/student-finance.
This web site is also the best source of information for all student finance
enquiries. Please contact Student Services for our up-to-date tuition fee
information on: (01793) 491591 or email:

Full Time Students
If you’re studying full time, the main sources of help are:

college.

*To be eligible for a student loan you must be a UK passport holder, residing
in the UK for more than 3 years and not have studied at the same level in
Higher Education before.
You’ll be able to take out two student loans per academic year:
Ÿ A Tuition Fee Loan - to cover your annual tuition fees in full
Ÿ A Maintenance Loan - to help with accommodation and other living costs
(how much you get will depend on your household income). When you are
assessed for your fees you are automatically assessed for a Student Loan.
If you are paying your own tuition fees, an instalment plan can be arranged
by contacting Swindon College Student Finance on Tel: (01793) 491591 or
email: [email protected].
You may also be eligible for a maintenance grant; depending on household;
income. If you qualify due to low household income, this in non-repayable.
Some courses are not covered by Student Loans. You can apply for a 24 +
Advanced Learning Loan to cover the course fees for these courses.

Graduation Ceremony
The Graduation Ceremony in October is the highlight of the higher
education year when hundreds of our students graduate from the College
after successfully completing their study programmes in the summer. The
day is formal but enjoyable and students process through the town in gowns
and mortar boards to the ceremony in a local church. The event is attended
by the Mayor and other local dignitaries and ends with an afternoon of
entertainment, food and drink with family, friends and college staff.
“Today is the first time we have seen each other since
May so it is good to catch up with everyone again”.
“It’s really nice to have my family here as I’m a bit
nervous.”
“After all of the hard work over the past few years, this is
a great celebration for everybody involved.”

Creative Arts & Design Practice | Matthew Jefferies
After leaving school, Matthew came to Swindon College to study for a National
Diploma in Art and Design. Matthew then progressed up to the Foundation Art
and Design course, before being offered a place at Cardiff Metropolitan University
to study for a BA in Ceramics. After completing the course in Cardiff, Matthew
returned to Swindon College to study for a Foundation Degree in Creative
Arts and Design Practice.”
Matthew says:
“Returning to Swindon College for the Foundation Degree was definitely the right
choice for me, I knew the facilities were great and that the lecturers were really
supportive. The class sizes at Swindon are a lot smaller than at a larger university
so there is more social interaction between the group and we each get more
one-to-one tuition time.”
“We are given a lot of creative freedom on the course and are encouraged to play
around with different techniques and materials. There are excellent facilities
available for us in the art school, like the print room, ceramics workshop and
photography studio.”
Once Matthew completes the Foundation Degree, he would like to top it

Prior to starting the course at Swindon College, Ben was living in Sheffield for
three years, writing and performing stand-up comedy. He chose to come to the
College to do his degree as it was one of the few institutions in the country that
offered the course with the content he was looking for.
Ben says:
“The tutors are amazing, they have a great enthusiasm and work ethic; nothing
is taken for granted. At Swindon College there is a focus of care as an individual,
which may be harder to find at a larger institution.
“The course supplies are really good and we’re able to use all of the facilities in the
Art School; I make use of the print room, as well as the Library.
“My course is my priority, any other commitments have to fit around it.”
When Ben completes his degree he hopes to pursue Illustration work, he is
particularly interested in storyboarding and would like to continue with
creative writing.

cases, consideration will be given to the applicant’s potential to progress to Honours level. Students
must identify and agree a suitable work-based learning environment with the tutor in which they can
carry out the work-based research project. This must be in place at the time of admission.
Applicants must hold a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).
Course Information:
The Honours year will be based on, and extend, the academic skills and pedagogy of the
Foundation Degree programme. Students continue within their Early Years work settings and will
prepare for management and leadership roles.
Units reflect current trends and enable learners to develop a broad understanding of Early Years Care
and Education in a variety of contexts.
A research project provides an opportunity for students to apply and develop their research and
project management skills in a settings-based, relevant and topical research project, greatly
enhancing their employability and ability to reflect on and adapt current practice.

opportunity to stay on and study at university level. It also meant I didn’t have to
move away from home. The lessons are really engaging and we get a lot of
one-to-one support from our tutors, even outside of lessons as we’re able to
email them for advice if we need to.”
“I have a part time job and also work with children as a volunteer for two days a week,
it takes a bit of planning but I manage to fit it all in.”
After Amy completes the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies, she hopes to train to
become a primary school teacher.

(which will also require students to have GCSE English, Maths and Science A-C).
Students can then apply for Qualified Teacher Status
Katie has been working as a Teaching Assistant for 13 years and is currently working
at a pre-prep independent school, Katie started this course as part of her journey to
becoming a Primary School Teacher.
Katie says:
“I’m getting on really well with the course, the lecturers are lovely and really
supportive. They each have a diverse range of skills and have previously worked
as teachers, in nurseries, or even completed this course themselves.”
“As our lectures are taught at a college our class sizes are smaller, we’re treated as
individuals and it’s really easy to contact lecturers if we need to.”
“I work full time and attend university on day release, what I learn during lessons can
be taken into the workplace the next day and vice versa. I would recommend
Swindon College for university level study, especially as a mature student.”
