Internet definition
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the
standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve several billion users worldwide. It
is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic,
business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a
broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. In Pakistan
Internet is used in two ways, Narrow Band and Broadband.
Dial up internet/ Narrow Band
Dial-up Internet access/ Narrow Band is a form of Internet access that uses
the facilities of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to establish a
dialed connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) via telephone lines and
using dial-up modem (28kbps, 56kbps etc…) in user’s computer to encode
and decode Internet Protocol packets and control information into and from
analogue audio frequency signals.
BROADBAND & BROADBAND DSL
• Broadband: The term broadband refers to the wide bandwidth
characteristics of a transmission medium and its ability to transport
multiple signals and traffic types simultaneously. The medium can be
coaxial cable, optical fiber, twisted pair or wireless.
• DSL Broadband is Digital Subscriber Line (work as a medium between
source and destination) is a technology that provides internet access by
transmitting high speed digital data over a local telephone lines using wide
bandwidth characteristics.
TYPES OF DSL
• ADSL (Asynchronous/Asymmetric DSL) Bandwidth (and bit rate) is
greater toward the customer premises (known as downstream) than the
reverse (known as upstream). This is why it is called asymmetric.
(US=DS/4)
• SDSL (Synchronous DSL): DS=US
• HDSL (High bit-rate DSL) : DS=US
• VDSL (Very High bit-rate DSL): (VDSL or VHDSL) is a technology
providing data transmission up to 52 Mbit/s downstream and 16 Mbit/s
upstream; using the frequency band from 25 kHz to 12 kHz.
ADSL 2 and ADSL 2+
ADSL 2 & ADSL 2 + are the modulation techniques in which data
capabilities are enhanced .
ADSL 2:
It optionally extends the capability of basic ADSL in data rates to 12 Mbit/s
downstream and, up to 3.5 Mbit/s upstream ADSL2 uses the same bandwidth
as ADSL but achieves higher throughput via improved modulation techniques.
ADSL 2 +
Commercially, it is notable for its maximum theoretical download speed of 24
Mbit/s.
PTCL BROADBAND PAKISTAN
PTCL Broadband is the largest and the fastest growing Broadband
service in Pakistan. Since its launch on 19th May 2007, PTCL has
acquired over 2 Million Broadband customers in over 2000 cities and
towns all across the Pakistan.

NETWORKING AND ITS TYPES
Networking: that allows computers to exchange data using either cable media or
wireless media.
Types of networking are as under;
• LAN: Local Area Network is a Computer Network covering a small local area
such as within a building, home or office.
• MAN: Metropolitan Area Network is Computer Network in which two or more
computers or communicating devices or networks which are geographically
separated but in same metropolitan city are connected to each other. The larger
the city, the bigger the MAN.
• WAN: Wide Area Network is a network that covers a broad area that links across
metropolitan, regional or national boundaries. Such as Business or Government
entitles utilize WAN’s to relay data among employees, clients, buyers and
suppliers from various geographical locations.
OPERATIONAL DIAGRAM
NETWORK HARDWARE/ELEMENTS
 DSLAM: DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE ACCESS MULTIPLEXER is a network
device that connects multiple customer DSL’s interfaces to a highspeed digital communications channel using multiplexing techniques.
 MDF: MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME is a signal distribution frame for
connecting exchange equipment and subscriber carrier equipment to
cables. MDF works as a termination point within the local exchange
equipment and terminations of local loops are connected by jumper
wires at MDF. All Cable Copper pairs supplying services through user
telephone lines are terminated at MDF and distributed through MDF
to within the local exchange e.g. repeaters and DSLAM.
 NGN/MSAG/MSAN: Multi Services Access Gateway/Multi Services Access Node
normally, it is installed in the Exchanges and it is used to provide same PSTN, DSL and
ISDN. Previously, Telecom providers were providing various types of services by using
separate equipment's including DSLAMs, but now It Integrates all services on a single
node, which connects with IP Network/ATMs, which is cost effective and to provide
new services to customer quickly. A typical outdoor MSAN cabinet consists of
narrowband (POTS), broadband (xDSL) services, and batteries with rectifiers, optical
transmission unit and copper distribution frame.
 BRAS/BNG: BROADBAND REMOTE ACCESS SERVER or Broadband Network Gateway
routes traffic to and from Broadband Remote Access Devices such as DSLAM’s on an
ISP’s network and provides live IP to user.
 PIE (Pakistan Internet Exchange) is ISP which routes internet traffic within and
outside of Pakistan. PIE routes internet traffic outside of Pakistan from undersea
optical fiber cables (SEA-ME-WE-3, SEA-ME-WE-4, IME-WE, Satellite).

LINE PARAMETERS
If customer places an order of Broadband services through 1236 or 0800-80800 then 1236 will further
process this order to exchange. Line-man will perform LQT (Line Qualifying Test) and check Line
parameters i.e. SNR & Attenuation
SNR Downstream (Signal to Noise Ratio) it should be equal or greater than 10dB.
SNR Upstream (Signal to Noise Ratio) it should be equal or greater than 6dB
ATTENUATION Downstream is distance between user premises and exchange and its value should
be as per below mentioned line parameters table
Line Parameters Table
Package
Line Parameters
1 Mbps
SNR (ds) ≥ 10, SNR (us) ≥ 6, ATT (ds) ≤ 40
2 Mbps
SNR (ds) ≥ 10, SNR (us) ≥ 6, ATT (ds) ≤ 45
4 Mbps
SNR (ds) ≥ 10, SNR (us) ≥ 6, ATT (ds) ≤ 48
8 Mbps or above
SNR (ds) ≥ 10, SNR (us) ≥ 6, ATT (ds) ≤ 50
IP and Classification of IP’s?
IP (Internet protocol) is a numerical label assigned to each
device e.g. computer, printer etc… participating in
computer network that uses IP for communication
•
•
•
•
•
Class A: IP range: 1-126
Class B: IP range: 128-191
Class C: IP range: 192-223
Class D: IP range: 224-239
Class E: IP range: 240-254
Types of IP’s
There are two types of IP’s.
• Public IP: Unique identification assigned to home or business
router/PC over the globe is called public IP.
e.g: Internet, etc.
• Private IP: Unique identification assigned to home or
business router/PC inside of a home or business network is
called private IP.
e.g: intranet, etc.
Some Important Concepts
DNS: Domain Name System is distributed naming system for
computers, services or any resource connected to the internet
allows an IP address to be identified with words in order to be
remembered more easily.
NAT: Network Address Translation is used to connect multiple
devices over a single IP network also converts Public/Live IP into
Private/Fake IP and vice versa.
What is ATM, PVC, VPI, VCI?
ATM: Asynchronous Transfer Mode is a networking technology that
transfers data in packets or cells of fixed size.
PVC: Permanent Virtual Circuit is software defined logical
connection in a network such as a frame relay network.
VPI: Virtual Path Identifier is an 8-bit header inside each ATM cell
that indicates where the cell should be routed.
VCI: Virtual Circuit Identifier enables the network data to travel
between the two devices on a network.
VPI/VCI for copper/ONU
• VPI/VCI values of copper and ONU are 0/103 and 8/81
respectively.
• VPI/VCI values for Smart TV( copper and ONU) are 0/102 and
0/35 respectively.
MODEM
A Modem is required to run Broadband services over Telephone
wires. Modem basically performs the function of modulation
(modulates an analogue carrier signal to encode digital information)
and demodulation (demodulates the signal to decode the
transmitted information) i.e. signals conversion from analogue to
digital and vice versa so that signals could never be lost.

Modem Configuration
Modem is configured in two ways.
•PPPoE Mode (Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet)
•Bridge Mode
PPPoE/Routed Mode: These credentials are required to configure modem
on PPPoE mode;
1)Username
2)Password
3)VPI
4)VCI
5)NAT
6)Default Route (if available)
Bridge Mode: Modem is configured on bridge mode on customer request.
These credentials required to configure modem on bridge mode;
1)VPI
2)VCI
While NAT is not required to configure modem on bridge mode because
dialer is created in system not modem so IP is assigned to system not
modem so NAT is not required.
MODEM BEHAVIOURS
Modem Behaviors
Modems are categorized in two types regarding their behaviors.
• Modems in which WAN status is reliable.
• Modems in which WAN status is non-reliable.
WAN status Reliable Modems
