For a while when you were doing “Beauty
and the Beast,” you also were a regular on
the now-finished “Ravenswood.” How was
that period for you?
The characters were completely different. Miranda on “Ravenswood” was more of a dark
and emotionally challenging role for me,
whereas with Heather (on “Beauty and the
Beast”), I get to be that bright and bubbly and
fun person who just comes in and makes people laugh.
I really do enjoy both sides of acting, but just
because I started on the Disney Channel, comedy is my favorite. And I get to do both on
“Beauty and the Beast.” I’ve found a really great
balance, so it’s a lot of fun for me.

Are you glad to be full-time on “Beauty and
the Beast” for the first time this season?
It really was interesting how one chapter came
to a close and another door opened. It was sad
that “Ravenswood” only ran for 10 episodes, but
when “Beauty and the Beast” called me back to
introduce me as more of a permanent resident
in their family, I was really excited. I truly do
enjoy the cast; everyone is so great and so
much fun to work with.
While you’re an Indiana native, you live in
Toronto now. How do you like it there?
I love Toronto! I love this city so much. Everyone
here is so nice, and there’s so much to do – especially over the summer. I find myself in a
pickle every single weekend, because I want to
go and do three things at once. You just have
to be OK with the one you’d the least bummed
about missing out on. The winters have been
hard, for sure, but I’m really happy to be here.

WAY IN ‘36 HOURS’ BYDICKIE
Anyone who has ever found themselves in a city with no idea
what to do or where to eat may get inspiration from a new series
premiering on Travel Channel this week.
In “36 Hours,” inspired by the popular New York Times travel column and premiering Monday, Aug.17, co-hosts Kristen Kish and
Kyle Martino spend a weekend in cities such as Berlin, Istanbul,
Boston, Nashville, Tenn., Barcelona, Spain and Portland, Ore.,
where they have 36 hours to explore the best of what each has to
offer based on advice from local experts. While acclaimed chef
Kish introduces Martino to each burg's culinary scene, the former
U.S. soccer star shows her what's good in nightlife, cultural and
recreational activities.
“We do everything from activities to food to athletic things,” says
Kish, a contestant on Bravo's “Top Chef” in 2012, “all the meanwhile
the (common) thread is meeting these specific people in all these different areas of expertise and pulling out what they want to say about
their city.”
In Monday’s opener, the co-hosts visit Berlin, where Kish and Martino took in the German capital’s surprisingly progressive culinary
scene.
“I went in with a preconceived notion about what the city was,” Kish
says, “and admittedly it's from what I read in textbooks, and I’d never
been there before and I was like, ‘Well, what's the food going to be
like? Is it just going to be sausages and bratwurst and beer?’ And I
was happily blown away and surprised. I will tell you that out of all
the cities that we went to, Berlin is one place I walked away from feeling like I could live there.

“Some of the restaurants we went to, and the chefs and food experts we met, they're from all over the world,” she continues, “so we
got to see why they came to Berlin, what kept them in Berlin and how
they’re adding to this ever-growing, multicultural food scene in Berlin.
… We went to everything from food markets to different restaurants
and from there the influence was a whole mix of everything.”
In another episode, Kish and Martino went to Boston, where Kish
got to see her home city from an outsider’s perspective.
“I've been in Boston for 10 years,” she says, “so I got to experience
it through someone else’s eyes, meaning Kyle, who knew a little bit
about the city. And then I got to experience it in a way that I've never
experienced it before and it got me very, very excited about my city,
that I kind of just started to view as, it's just the place that I live; it's
my home.”

recalls
a heated
desegregation
case

A brown sedan pulls into a cemetery and parks.
Its driver, a handsome young man in obvious distress, opens the glove box, pulls out a bottle of
Maalox and takes a swig. After losing his lunch, he
walks off into the distance, sits down by a grave
and begins talking to its occupant, his father.
That man portrayed in the opening scene of the
six-part HBO miniseries “Show Me a Hero,” premiering Sunday, Aug. 16, is Nick Wasicsko, the former mayor of Yonkers, N.Y., who committed
suicide in 1993, after his political career went into
ruin following a particularly vitriolic desegregation
case in his city.
Wasicsko, as played by Oscar Isaac (“Inside
Llewyn Davis”), was at 28 the youngest mayor in
Yonkers’ history, and he found himself in the middle
of a firestorm in 1987 when a federal judge ordered
the city to build a small number of low-income
housing units in the white neighborhoods of his
town. He had campaigned on resisting the order
but changed his position after taking office when
he was advised that the case was hopeless. Many
of those who voted for him felt betrayed.
Others in the cast include Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya RichardsonJackson, Bob Balaban and Jim Belushi.
“The subject matter is kind of timeless, sadly,”
says Emmy-winning producer David Simon

(“Treme,” “The Wire”), who created the story from a
book of the same name by Lisa Belkin, “in that whatever the American pathology is with race and class,
it’s the same now as it was 25 years ago. ... I don’t
want to suggest there hasn’t been some progress but
that there’s still an awful lot of struggle left.”
The series was filmed in Yonkers, where Simon and
his crew met with many of the people portrayed.
Many, he says, were eager to participate but some
would just as soon forget this sad episode in the city’s
history.
“We were touching on a lot of unhappy memories
there,” Simons says. “It’s not easy because not
everybody had their finest moments all the time. As
in real life, there were moments that people wished
weren’t in the film. And it’s necessary to give the context but it can’t be easy but that’s always the tradeoff
when you’re going to speak to the real. But there’s
power in the real, in a story that isn’t made up.
“These things really happened,” he continues. “This
was the fight. This was the cost. This was the benefit,
and it’s allegorical for the question that remains for
the rest of the country, which is, are there going to be
two Americas? Or do we have some sense that we’re
all part of the same shared future? That’s a question
that’s being argued aggressively in every election
cycle ... .”

When did you get into cooking with fire?
“I’ve always loved fire. I was obsessed with fire as a kid.
I wouldn’t promote that for my own kids, of course, but I
could sit for hours just looking at the fire, playing with it
in the safest way possible.”
Do you favor cooking over fire because of the
flavor?
“Partly, yes, but there is socially a difference when
people are gathered around a fire. The conversation is
different and the length of time that you sit around
together is different. When you’re outside cooking at a
barbecue, you have to tend to the fire and the flame.”
What side dishes do you favor?
“I almost never really cook the same thing twice. One
day I might cook, like, sautéed dandelion greens on a
skillet over a fire. Another day I might just do fingerling
potatoes with olive oil and a spice mix.”
Any favorite cookbook authors?
“Ted Reader, who writes many of the ‘Cooking for
Dummies’ books, is a vault of information on barbecue.
And Chef Ben Ford, the son of Harrison Ford, has a
great book called ‘Taming the Feast.’ ”
‘MAN FIRE FOOD’ finds great barbecue
on both sides of Mason-Dixon Line
Across North America, summertime is a season for cookouts, and for many families, that includes barbecue. Roger Mooking, host of
Cooking Channel’s “Man Fire Food,” goes looking for lip-smacking ribs in two very different regions of the United States in an episode called
“Rib-A-Licious,” premiering Tuesday, Aug. 18.
First, Mooking ventures into the Deep South of
Hattiesburg, Miss., for a visit to Leatha’s Bar-Bque, where third-generation pit master Brian
Jackson serves up Southern-style pork ribs,
continuing the legacy of his grandmother, after
whom the popular restaurant is named.
“They’re not doing competition barbecue,
where with the ribs you want to see your teethmarks left in the rib and it’s lightly sauced with a
lot of texture in the meat,” Mooking explains.
“These ribs at Leatha’s just fall off the bone. The
bone slides out clean as a whistle and the sauce

standing about 15 feet tall, hanging the ribs near
the top, over two lower trays of meat.
“As the ribs rendered and cooked, they would
drip down and fall onto the other meats on the
racks below it, so it was basting the meats down
below,” Mooking says.
The episode also includes a stop at New York’s
Hometown Bar-q-que, where Brooklyn native
Billy Durney gives his ribs an ethnic spin.
“(Billy) came from the personal security industry
but he just fell in love with barbecue,” Mooking
says. “I wouldn’t say it’s authentically Korean or
Jamaican, but he’s honoring the mishmash of cultures in his community in the barbecue they serve.
They also have classic Texas brisket and classic
Southern ribs.”

There was a time when professional golf’s
biggest rivalry was Tiger Woods and Phil
Mickelson. While the media focuses on
Woods and whether he can ever overcome the likes of Jordan Spieth and Rory
McIroy, Phil Mickelson continues to go
about his business. He’ll be doing just
that at the 2015 PGA Championship which
wraps up Sunday, August 16, on CBS. The
tournament is taking place at Whistling
Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin where it was
also held in 2004, and 2010.
While Mickelson is certainly not among
top-ranked golfers as he once was, the
lefty is always a force to be reckoned
with. No stranger to the pressure of playing in Majors, you never know when he’s
going to contend as he did last month at
the Open Championship in Scotland. He
was within two shots of the lead late in
the final round before sending a 17th hole
drive out of bounds to a hotel balcony at
the Old Course at St Andrews.
He finished tied for second at the Masters
in April but was a non factor at the U.S.
Open in June. In 2014, he finished second
behind McIlroy at the PGA Championship.
At Whistling Straits he finished tied for
second in 2004, and also tied for 12th in
2010. His most recent Major win was The
Open Championship in 2013.
Mickelson has shown that when his game
is on he’s as good as anyone. Quite often,
he shines in Majors.
