Part of Waste Check’s mission is to educate the
residents within our region to reduce, reuse, and
recycle. One simple thing you can do which encompasses all of the 3 R’s is to use reusable mugs
and bottles for your beverages.
Whether taking water on the go, or going
through the drive through for your morning coffee, reusable containers are the way to go. Reusable mugs for your hot
beverages can be used to
replace paper cups from
quick service establishments and take-out restaurants. Some places will
even offer a discount on
the price of your beverage
if you use your own mug.
Replacing throwaway
cups with your own reusable mugs cuts down on
waste immensely and can

spending up to hundreds
of years sitting in a landfill. Also, Canada produces
1.6 billion coffee cups per year, which takes 350,000
trees and 400 million gallons of water to produce.
If you forget your mug at home, just a friendly
reminder to our residents that Tim Hortons coffee
cups are recyclable—place empty cups in your blue

bag for paper recyclables.
Refillable bottles can also be used in place of disposable plastic water bottles. Plastic water bottles
are recyclable and returnable for a refund; however,
they can be very wasteful if not managed properly.
These bottles require a lot of resources to be made.
They also can contain harmful chemicals, and take
a very long time to degrade in the environment or
in a landfill if they are
not recycled.
Unfortunately, a lot
of plastic water bottles
wind up polluting the
oceans as well. Refillable water bottles
reduce waste and
come in many different shapes and
sizes—some even
have water filters
built right in to
the design.

ARIES
You’re inspired to produce a great
masterpiece or perform an act of
ge
nerosity towards a loved one
when you get home.
LEO
You’re rather sensitive and need
some rest in order not to take things
too personally. It would also be sen
sible to think about taking a vaca
tion to recuperate.
TAURUS
You’re surrounded by people. You
may feel quite a bit of pressure at
work. You could do with a busy so
cial life to escape your routine for a
while.
VIRGO
It’s always easier to negotiate when
you’re not emotionally involved. You
tend to agree with everyone, but you
dig your heels in with your children.
GEMINI
You may have the insight you’ve
been waiting for to embark on
the perfect career path. A training
course will help you achieve your
goals.
CANCER
Your dreams are the inspiration for
some great ideas for next summer’s

Reusing and Repurposing
A few months ago I wrote about www.afterwear.ca and encouraged everyone to check out
this site. It’s a way of repurposing unwanted or
destroyed textiles of any kind.
My husband and I found yet another way of
repurposing some items. Local animal shelters
can use old electric blankets in the dog kennels,
as long as you cut off all cords. They will also
accept discarded sleeping bags, as long as the
zippers are cut off. Your item gets a new use,
a dog somewhere is cozy and warm AND if it
doesn’t go to the new owner when the dog is
adopted, it can still be donated to “afterwear”.
They can also use old towels.
All the above items should be laundered
before they are donated because no pet wants
to pick up fleas or anything else that might be
lingering in these discarded materials. (Note:
pillows of ANY kind cannot be accepted.)
Repurposing (also called reusing) can take
many forms. Gift bags, nice bows, ribbons,
etc. quite often can be saved and reused. Old
Christmas cards can be
cut up and used as gift
tags. When our children
were small I bought reusable, high quality mylar gift wrap in beautiful
shades of red and green.
The gifts under our tree
each year shimmered
beautifully. After all the
gifts were opened my
husband and I would
remove any tape left behind, fold up the mylar
and were ready for next
year. We always left out a

Montcalm & Wolfe
by Roch Carrier
In September 1759, a small band of British
troops led by James Wolfe scaled the tall cliff
overlooking a farmer’s field owned by Abraham Martin and overpowered the French garrison that protected the area, allowing the bulk
of the British army to ascend the cliff behind
and attack the French who, led by Louis-Joseph
Montcalm, were largely unaware of Wolfe’s tactics. The battle that ensued on what would become known as the Plains of Abraham would
forever shape the geography and politics of
Canada. The book is a dual biography of the
men and their most famous battle written by a
master storyteller.
Rise to Greatness
by Conrad Black
Spanning 874 to 2014, and beginning from
Canada’s first inhabitants and the early explorers, this masterful history challenges our
perception of our history and Canada’s role
in the world. From Champlain to Carleton,
Baldwin and Lafontaine, to Macdonald, Laurier, and King, Canada’s role in peace and war,
to Quebec’s quest for autonomy, Black takes
on sweeping themes and vividly recounts the
story of Canada’s development from colony to
dominion to country. Black persuasively reveals that while many would argue that Canada
was perhaps never predestined for greatness,
the opposite is in fact true: the emergence of
a magnificent country, against all odds, was a
remarkable achievement.
Canada in the Great Power Game 1914-2014
by Gwynne Dyer
In Canada in the Great Power Game, Gwynne Dyer moves back and forth between the
seminal event, the First World War, and all
the later conflicts that Canada chose to fight
in. He draws parallels between these
conflicts,
with
the same idealism among the
young soldiers,
and the same deeply
conflicted emotions among the survivors, surfacing time and again in every war
right down to Afghanistan. This entertaining
and provocative book casts an unsparing eye
over what happens when Canada and the great
powers get in the war business, illuminating
much about how we see ourselves on the world
stage.
A Time Such as There Never Was Before
by Alan Bowker
Between 1918 and 1921 a great storm blew
through Canada and raised the expectations of
a new world in which all things would be possible. The years after the First World War were
among the most tumultuous in Canadian history: a period of unremitting change, drama,
and conflict. The war had been a great crusade,
promising a world made new. But it had cost
Canada 60,000 dead and many more wounded,
and it had widened the many fault lines in a
young, diverse country. A Time Such As There
Never Was Before describes how this exciting
period laid the foundation of the Canada we
know today.
The Night Canada Stood Still
by Robert A. Wright
The Quebec-sovereignist juggernaut began
with the creation of the Parti Québécois in
1968 and climaxed in the provincial referendum on sovereignty held on October 30, 1995.
On that extraordinary evening, Canadians
from all walks of life, in every region of the
country, sat glued to their television screens as
polling results trickled in from across Quebec.
Unlike the first referendum, in 1980, when the
victory of the federalist No vote led by Pierre
Trudeau was a foregone conclusion, the race
in October 1995 was a dead heat. All evening,
the returns pitched and rolled, and anxious
Canadians pitched and rolled along with them.
Never before had the country come face to face
with its own imminent extinction.
