2012 Sholom Annual Report
2012 Sholom Annual Report
“Sunflowers” by Robert G.
From the President
“Our staff—I cannot imagine a more
talented and dedicated group of
individuals. . . our volunteers whose
efforts are priceless, the Foundation
and Auxiliary, and the Twin Cities
community. Thank you one and all.”
Barry Newman
President, Sholom Community Alliance
2
Dear Sholom Community,
Notwithstanding my propensity to look forward rather than back, I would like to mention
one very significant organizational accomplishment during the last year—the hiring of Ben
Laub as the CEO of Sholom. After a long
and thorough search, the Board of Directors
selected Ben to strategically and purposefully
lead Sholom into the future as we continue to
serve our elderly community members.
Although Ben has been with Sholom for
only a few weeks, he has hit the ground running by meeting, connecting, and developing
relationships with our residents and families,
staff, and the broader Sholom community. If
you have not personally met Ben, I encourage
you to take a moment and introduce yourself
to him. I know he wants to meet you.
During the upcoming months, Ben and the
Board will engage in a process to develop a
three-year strategic plan for Sholom. The purpose of the strategic plan will be to focus the
organization on specific initiatives that support
our mission of providing a broad continuum
of residential, social service, and health care
services to older adults in a Jewish environment. No doubt, the economic, political, and
financial uncertainties that impact Sholom on
a daily basis will continue. But these uncertainties provide opportunities to reexamine
the services Sholom provides and how those
services are delivered.
Finally, let me express my sincere gratitude
to everyone that makes Sholom such a wonderful organization. First, our staff—I cannot
imagine a more talented and dedicated group
From the CEO
of individuals. Next, our volunteers—
the effort of our more than 420
volunteers is priceless. The funds provided by the Sholom Foundation and
Auxiliary are critical to the success of
Sholom. Last, and most importantly,
to the Twin Cities community, thank
you one and all for your financial
support, your encouragement, your
time and energy, and everything else
that you so graciously provide to
Sholom. Our success is because of
you and for that we are grateful!

Dear Friends:
Since my arrival
at Sholom just a
few short weeks
ago, I have been
impressed with
the supportive
and forward
thinking leadership of the Sholom
Board of Directors
and community members; the dedicated, committed and professional
Sholom staff; and the
proud and resilient residents and
clients who are served each day
by the array of services which are
offered under the umbrella of Sholom’s programs and services. These
involvements and program experiences will serve us well as we all
fashion and align our financial
strategies to address the present
and future needs on behalf of the
aging members in our communities
and to position us for the future.
Each day we read about
medical breakthroughs and
technological advances to support
our healthcare and social needs;
Sholom will be considering these
and other options which will align
our resources for our
programs to serve
our communities
as they are now
and well into the
future. We really
never know who
we are until we
see what we
can do for others,
who can offer us
nothing in return. Our
actions in the months to
come will continue to speak
volumes about our values
and continue to serve as a Jewish
community and in our ongoing
commitment to our elderly.
I am now joining with you in
this exciting and rewarding adventure for the benefit of elderly community members, as we harness
once again the strength of the
Minneapolis-St. Paul communities
in creating our future.
Sincerely,
Ben Laub

COMPAS Art Program
“I see the pictures in
my mind and paint
them with my heart.”
Earlier this spring, Sholom had
the privilege of collaborating with
COMPAS (Community Programs
in the Arts and Sciences) and
MnCAAN (Minnesota Creative
Arts and Aging Network) to
host a three-day, intensive art
camp on both the Ackerberg
and Shaller Family campuses.
The art camp provided intensive
exposure to artistic learning
with the goal of jumpstarting a
quality arts learning program at
each campus. Pat Owen, the
artist-in-residence, facilitated
the camp on each campus as
well as the subsequent eight
weeks of classes. Pat (and a
supportive network of staff and
volunteers) taught participants the
techniques of watercolor painting,
enhanced relationships amongst
participants, and assisted participants to experience feelings of
accomplishment and purpose.
At the conclusion of the
intensive camp, each campus
hosted an art show to showcase
the hard work of participants.
The resounding feedback from
participants, many of their family
members, volunteers and staff
was very positive.
Jen Zinnel, Ackerberg Campus
Director of Therapeutic Recreation, recalls “The participants
really “blossomed” throughout the
camp. It was really neat to see
their creativity come out in ways
we hadn’t ever seen. The best part
was seeing the pride that they had
when their work was completed;
they were so proud to share it and
tell others about it during the art
show. One of our residents shared
that ‘I see the pictures in my mind
and paint them with my heart.’”
Natalie Kuklinski, Shaller Family Campus Director of Therapeutic
Recreation, states, “The tenants,
volunteers and staff who participated were all so moved by this
experience. It was remarkable to
see the joy on the residents’ faces
as they shared their stories while
creating their graphic memoir.
“We had one resident
in particular that rarely
attends programming
stand outside the dining
room just waiting for the
art camp to begin each
day. A family member of
one
o of the participants
expressed
her astonishe
ment
at how engaged her
m
father
became during the
f
aart camp.”
Both campuses have
plans to move forward with
p
aanother eight-week class
series beginning in midse
August. The artist leading
A
this series will be Anne
Krocak. The media Anne will be
working with is ceramic tile design.
Participants will learn about each
other while creating their own
personal symbolic tile or sculpture.
Staff and volunteers are excited
to be gearing up for a new series
with many participants new to the
program.

“Flower Pot” by Florence
Sholom
We need our community behind
us now more than ever! Show
your support for Sholom in several
different ways!
1. Become a member of Sholom and
receive dual membership with
Sholom Auxiliary. Choose from
several membership levels, or become
a life member! Use the envelope
included in this report to show your
support!
2. Become a Bed & Breakfast
Backer. Join the Sholom devotees
who understand and support our
mission to care for the elderly. Bed
and Breakfast Backers contribute
in increments of $25 or more per
month to offset Sholom’s operating
losses. Backers are automatically
members of Sholom. To become a
Bed & Breakfast backer, call
(952) 934-1664.
3. Acknowledge a special occasion
or memorialize someone with a
donation to Sholom.
To make a tribute or donation on our
website at www.sholom.com. Click
on “Giving” and learn how! For more
information on all of these options,
call (952) 939-1664.
4. Volunteer your time and talents
at Sholom.
Give an hour or a day, once or on a
regular basis. To learn more about
the countless volunteer opportunities
available, call:
(952) 939-1627 (St. Louis Park) or
(651) 328-2068 (St. Paul).
Sholom
Auxiliary
Sholom
Foundation
Created to enrich, enhance
and bring comfort to Sholom
residents and tenants through
fundraising efforts.
Ensuring Sholom programs, services
and facilities for our elderly loved
ones, ourselves, and generations
to come . . .
The Auxiliary has provided many
“extras” for Sholom residents and
tenants through the years—including
purchasing special equipment and
offsetting the “in-house” beauty/barber
shop fees.
Sales of Auxiliary-made “Delicious
Knishes,” the Food for Show; Food on
the Go cookbook and Special Service
cards all directly benefit Sholom, and
mark your calendars now for Thursday,
June 20, 2013, when the Auxiliary will
bring you the third-annual Food for
Your Soul event which continues to be
a resounding success every year!
Auxiliary specific endowments are
another way to support the Auxiliary’s
efforts. Endowments support specific
programs like communication, others
are there for where the need is
greatest. To find out how you can
create an Auxiliary endowment fund
or to become a member, call
(952) 939-1594.
The dual membership program of
Sholom, together with the Auxiliary
has been tremendously successful. Be
sure to renew your membership for the
2012-13 year, or, if you aren’t already
a member, you can join anytime! Join
online at www.sholom.com or call
(952) 939-1638.
The sole mission of Sholom Foundation
is to raise sufficient endowment and
annual funds to generate annual financial
support for Sholom services and
facilities, and to promote excellence in
care to those served by Sholom.
Serving the fastest growing
population—seniors over the
age of 65—and ever-decreasing
government reimbursements for
long-term care, makes the need for
a reliable source of funding for
Sholom more important than ever,
and even more challenging given
today’s economy.
The Foundation’s fundraising efforts
are concentrated on planned gifts—
current and pledges of cash or stock,
and estate gifts that name Sholom
Foundation as a beneficiary in a will, life
insurance policy, qualified retirement
fund or trust, or property—all of which
may establish named funds to support
Sholom in perpetuity.
Gifts to the Sholom Foundation
provide the crucial financial support
necessary in serving the elderly
community. To learn more about
how you can make a difference with
your gift to Sholom Foundation,
call Executive Director, Joel Mandel
at 952-939-1593.
