A talk given by
Aileen Ribeiro
23 April 2015
Founders’ Hall, Radnor Walk, London SW3 4BN
6.30pm
Aileen Ribeiro is an international expert on the history of dress and Emeritus professor at the Courtauld
Institute. She was a curator of the successful exhibition Whistler, Women and Fashion at the Frick
Collection, New York (2003). The exhibition focused on fashion in Whistler’s art as a key to understanding
his life and work and as a new means of exploring his relationship with women and his portraits of them. The
exhibition gave new insights into some of Whistler’s most beloved masterpieces in the context of art and
fashion in the Victorian period. The catalogue published by Yale University Press is now out of print.
Professor Riberio has written many books and articles on the history of dress. She has been a costume
consultant to major portrait exhibitions in the UK and US and she is a member of the Advisory Council of
Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
