TO SERVE, September 6, 2015
Two Kinds of Friends
I saw this poem called Around The Corner by Henson Towne that seems to have a low
view of friendship, or at the very least represents the futility of friendships that end in this
life:
Around the corner I have a friend, in this great city that has no end.
Yet days go by and weeks rush on, and before I know it a year is gone,
And I never see my old friend's face; for life is a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well, as in the days when I rang his bell.
We were younger then, and now we are busy, tired men.
Tired with playing a foolish game; tired with trying to make a name.
Tomorrow, I say, I will call on Jim, just to show that I'm thinking of him.
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, and the distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away, here's a telegram; sir, Jim died today.
And that's what we get, and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
There is a great need to have friends in Church. Those you will see on a weekly basis,
and often 2-3 times a week at the very least. Good
intentions do not get in the way of checking with
these friends, because it is our relationship with the
Lord that brings us together. Life doesn’t have the
same impact in its ability to distract these friendships, because our commitment to the Lord provides weekly reunions. Thus, Church is like a class
reunion that takes place weekly instead of yearly. It
is like family reunions, which occur at least 52
times a year instead of 1-2 times. A friendship in
the Church provides for the greatest needs we as
people have: It provides family and close friends,
who stay connected by something bigger than a common earthly interest. I believe in
having friends outside the Church as well, but I encourage you to develop friends in the
Church. They need you, and you need them. I know I need friends in the Church, and not
just those I serve.
