Elis Benckert & Ragnar Ostberg
Elis Benckert souhaitait devenir un ébéniste et eût une première
expérience de six mois avec son oncle, lui-même ébéniste, qu’il
prolongea par quatre années ce cours de 1900 à 1904 à l’Institut Royal
de Technologie. Il suit l’enseignement de Gustaf Clason et travail pour
un temps dans le bureau de Ragnar Ostberg.
Benckert acquît de cette façon une connaissance minutieuse de
l’artisanat, des matériaux et de l’architecture.
Cela se ressent dans ses rares réalisations dans lesquelles il a simplifié
l’aménagement de la maison, pièce par pièce, jusqu’à obtenir le
résultat le plus propre et minimal possible.
Elis Benckert actually wanted to be a carpenter and had practiced for
half a year with his uncle who was a cabinetmaker, followed by studies
1900-1904 at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
He had Isak Gustaf Clason as a teacher and worked for a while on
Ragnar Östberg’s office.
Benckert had acquired in this way a thorough knowledge of
craftsmanship, materials and architecture.
This would show up in his few works in which he simplified the house
piece by piece, until the result is so clean and pared down as possible.
Benckert had a brief architectural career, he died early.
Benckert eut une carrière architecturale brève, il mourut jeune.
Sa clientèle appartenait essentiellement au monde de la finance dans
lequel il a baigné toute enfance.
Un exemple de son style est la Villa Lagercrantz sur Djursholm qu’il a
réalisé pour son cousin Gustaf Lagercrantz, directeur de banque. En
allant même jusqu’à créer certains meubles.
Benckert était clairement en avance sur son temps, précédent les
idées fonctionnalistes résumées par l’expression « Moins c’est plus »
de Ludwig Mies der Rohe à laquelle il allait adhérer plus tard.
En 1912 Ragnar Ostberg propose à Elis Benckert de dessiner et de
décorer le futur Hôtel de Ville de Stockholm, juste avant qu’il ne mette
fin à ses jours, à seulement 31 ans.

He found most of his clients through the financial world in which his
childhood upbringing was closely attached.
An example of Benckerts style and simplicity was the Villa Lagercrantz
on Djursholm which he designed for bank director Gustaf Lagercrantz
a cousin of Benckert, even the furniture in some rooms had been
designed by the architect Benckert.
Simplicity was extremely important for Benckert as a designer.
In 1912 Ragnar Ostberg gave Elis Benckert the job of designing and
decorating the Stockholm city hall, but this would never happen as on
New Year’s Eve 1912 Elis tragically took his own life.
He was just 31 years old.

La vente sera faite au comptant et conduite en euros ( ). Les acquéreurs
paieront en sus des enchères les frais suivants : jusqu’à 500 000 , 25% TTC
(soit 23,37% HT + TVA 7%) pour les livres et 25% TTC (soit 20,90% HT + TVA
19,6%) pour les manuscrits et autographes et au-delà de 500 000 16,05%
TTC (soit 15% HT + TVA 7%) pour les livres et 17,94% TTC (soit 15,00 HT
+ TVA 19,6%) pour les manuscrits et autographes. Ce calcul s’applique
par lot et par tranche. AVIS IMPORTANT : Pour les lots dont le vendeur est
non - résident, l’adjudicataire paiera une TVA de 7% en sus de l’adjudication
(lots signalés par ), ou 19,6% (lots signalés par )en sus des frais légaux
(le montant de cette TVA sera remboursé sur présentation de la preuve
d’exportation hors CEE, dans un délai maximum d¹un mois). Conformément
aux dispositions de l’article 321 - 4 du code de commerce l’astérisque (*)
suivant certains lots indique qu’ils sont la propriété d’un des associés de la
société Pierre Bergé & associés.

As well as the hammer price, buyers will pay the following premium : up to
500 000 , 25% inclusive of tax (23.37% + 7% VAT) for books, and 25 %
inclusive of tax (20.9 + 19.6 % VAT) for manuscripts and autographs ; above
500 000 ,16.05% inclusive of tax (15% + 7% VAT) for books, and 17. 94%
inclusive of tax (15% + 19.6% VAT) for manuscripts and autographs. This
calculation applies to each lot individually. For lots sold by a non - resident
the buyer will pay a 7% V.A.T. (lots marked by a ) or 19.6% VAT (lots marked
by a ) on the hammer price plus the premium (the buyer will be refunded of
this V. A. T.. when he will be presenting to our cashier the proof of export out
of EEC). This calculation applies to each lot individually.
GARANTIES
Conformément à la loi, les indications portées au catalogue engagent la
responsabilité du Commissaire-Priseur, sous réserve des rectifications
éventuelles annoncées au moment de la présentation de l’objet et portées
au procès-verbal de la vente. Une exposition préalable permettant aux
acquéreurs de se rendre compte de l’état des biens mis en vente, il ne sera
admis aucune réclamation de ce fait, une fois l’adjudication prononcée.
GARANTEES
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only
by eventual annoucements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal
records there of. An exhibition prior to the sale permits buyers to establish
the condition of the works offered for sale and therefore no claims will be
accepted after the hammer has fallen.
ENCHÈRES
Les enchères suivent l’ordre des numéros du catalogue. PBA est libre de
fixer l’ordre de progression des enchères et les enchérisseurs sont tenus de
s’y conformer. Le plus offrant et dernier enchérisseur sera l’adjudicataire.
En cas de double enchère reconnue effective par PBA, l’objet sera remis en
vente, tous les amateurs présents pouvant concourir à cette deuxIe mise en
adjudication.
BIDS
Bidding will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue
or as announced by Pierre Bergé & associés, and will be in increments
determinated by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the
purchaser. Should Pierre Bergé & associés recognise two simultaneous bids
on an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the
saleroom may participate in thissecond opportunity to bid.
ORDRES D’ACHAT ET ENCHÈRES PAR TÉLÉPHONE
Tout enchérisseur qui souhaite faire une offre d’achat par écrit ou enchérir
par téléphone peut utiliser le formulaire prévu à cet effet en fin du catalogue
de vente. Ce formulaire doit parvenir à PBA, au plus tard deux jours avant
la vente, accompagné des coordonnées bancaires de l’enchérisseur. Les
enchères par téléphone sont un service gracieux rendu aux clients qui ne
peuvent se déplacer. En aucun cas Pierre Bergé & associés ne pourra être
tenu responsable d’un problème de liaison téléphonique.
ABSENTEE BIDS AND TELEPHONE BIDS
Those wishing to make a bid in writing or by telephone should use the form
provided with the auction catalogue. This form, accompanied by the bidder’s
bank details, must be received by PBA no later than two days before the sale.
In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. Telephone
bids are a free service designed for clients who are unable to be present
at auction. Pierre Bergé & associés cannot be held responsible for any
problems due to technical difficulties.
RETRAIT DES ACHATS
Dès l’adjudication, l’objet sera sous l’entière responsabilité de l’adjudicataire.
L’acquéreur sera lui-même chargé de faire assurer ses acquisitions,
et PBA décline toute responsabilité quant aux dommages que l’objet
pourrait encourir, et ceci dès l’acquisition prononcée. Toutes les formalités,
notamment celles concernant l'exportation, ainsi que les transports restent à
la charge exclusive de l’acquéreur.
- Ventes à Richelieu-Drouot : meubles, tableaux et objets volumineux qui
n'auront pas été retirés par leurs acquéreurs le lendemain de la vente avant
10h seront entreposés au 3ème sous-sol de l'Hôtel Drouot où ils pourront être
retirés aux horaires suivants : 13h-17h du lundi au vendredi, 8h-12h le samedi.

les frais de stockage dûs aux conditions tarifaires de Drouot SA en vigueur
devront être réglés au magasinage de l'Hôtel Drouot avant l'enlèvement des
lots et sur présentation du bordereau acquitté.
- Ventes au Palais d'Iéna : meubles, tableaux et objets volumineux qui
n'auront pas été retirés par leurs acquéreurs le lendemain de la vente avant
10h seront déposés au Garde-Meubles TSE où ils pourront être retirés aux
horaires suivants : 9h-12h / 14h-18h du lundi au vendredi.

Les frais de stockage seront pris en charge par PBA pendant une durée de

retirer le lot acquis au garde meubles doit en informer PBA 48 h à l’avance
afin que PBA autorise le garde-meubles à délivrer la marchandise.
L’enlèvement du lot acquis se fait sur rendez-vous et sur présentation du
bordereau acquitté.
REMOVAL OF PURCHASES
From the moment the hammer falls, sold items will be in the exclusive
responsability of the buyer. Transportation and storage will be invalided to the
buyer. The buyer will be solely responsible for insurance, and Pierre Bergé
& associés assumes no liability for any damage items may incur from the
time the hammer falls. All formality procedures, including those concerning
exportation as well as transport fall exclusively to the buyer.
- Sales at Richelieu-Drouot :
Furniture, paintings and other voluminous objects which have not been
retrieved by the buyer on the day following the sales, before 10 am, will be
stored in the 3rd basement of the Hotel Drouot where they can be collected
at the following hours : 1pm-5pm from Monday to Friday, 8am- 12am on
Saturday.

All due storage fees, according to the tariffs of Drouot SA, have to be paid at
the Hotel Drouot’s store before the retrieval of items and on presentation of
the paid voucher.
- Sales at the Palais d’Iéna :
Furniture, paintings and other voluminous objects which have not been
retrieved by the buyer on the day following the sales, before 10am, will be
stored at the TSE furniture store where they can be collected at the following
hours : 9am-12am / 2pm-6pm from Monday to Friday.

Storage fees will be taken care of by PBA for a duration of 15 days starting
after the date of the sale. Past this period of time, the buyer will be responsible
for the fees which will be of 30 euros per m³ per month . Please note that it
will be compulsory to inform Pierre Bergé & associés 48h before collecting
the acquired items so that Pierre Bergé & associés can authorize the delivery
by the furniture store. Retrieval of purchases is done upon appointment and
presentation of the paid voucher.
PRÉEMPTION
Dans certains cas, l’Etat français peut exercer un droit de préemption sur
les œuvres d’art mises en vente publique conformément aux dispositions de
l’article 37 de la loi du 31 décembre 1921 modifié par l’article 59 de la loi du
10 juillet 2000. L’Etat se substitue alors au dernier enchérisseur. En pareil cas,
le représentant de l’Etat formule sa déclaration après la chute du marteau
auprès de la société habilitée à organiser la vente publique ou la vente de gré
à gré. La décision de préemption doit ensuite être confirmée dans un délai
de quinze jours. Pierre Bergé & associés n’assumera aucune responsabilité
du fait des décisions administratives de préemption.
PRE-EMPTION
In certain cases, the French State is entitled to use its right of pre-emption on
works of art or private documents. This means that the state substitutes itself
for the last bidder and becomes the buyer. In such a case, a representative of
the French State announces the exercise of the pre-emption right during the
auction and immediately after the lot has been sold, and this declaration will
be recorded in the official sale record. The French State will have then fifteen
(15) days to confirm the pre-emption decision. Pierre Bergé & associés will
not be held responsible for any administrative decisions of the French State
regarding the use of its right of pre-emption.
