President’s Report June 2016
We are turning back the clock at this months club
night, if you own a bike from the decade of disco
then bring it along and join the display of 70’s
machinery. If you haven’t a 70’s bike but instead a
desire to dress in the unique decades fashion, well
that’s a little odd but who are we to judge so don
that spandex disco suit and add to the colour of the
evening.
Talking of odd behaviour 19 June is the date for this
years mid winter dip ride to Whangamata. It would
be great to see a big turn out and whilst dipping isn’t
compulsory it is highly encouraged.
When it comes to turn outs the fields across all
classes for round 1 of the Putoline WRRS exceeded
all our expectations and certainly validated the shift
of venue to Taupo. Not only were the fields large but
the quality of riders competing was also top notch. A big shout out to the Marshals
and Officials for facilitating what must be one of the smoothest days racing I’ve seen.
Despite early morning fog delaying the start of proceedings we still comfortably got
through a full days racing which was a credit to you all.
May also saw MNZ holding their AGM and awards dinner. I’m proud to announce that
club members took out 2 of the major awards with Josiah Natzke winning Male rider
of the year and Jacob Stroud winning up and coming road rider, well done to you
both. Steve Parker attended as club representative so if you have any questions on this
years conference seek him out at club night.
We have confirmed 16 October as the date for this years Bike Show & Swap meet.
NEXT CLUB NIGHT
2nd June
Doors open 7.30pm

Members are requested to bring their 1970s machines for

Once again the venue will be the Classics Museum in Frankton, Nigel Lambourne has
put his hand up to co-ordinate things this year so if you have any ideas for the day let
Nige know.
See you all at club night.

Race Reports - 2016 HMCC Winter Series @ Taupo Round 1
Meeting Report - Doug Cornes
Round 1 - 2016 HMCC Putoline Winter Series
Sunday May 8th Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, Taupo
On a Foggy, Cool, Cloudy but Fine Sunday, these were the condition’s that greeted
riders and teams at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park for Round 1 of the HMCC
Putoline Winter Series.
The racing across all the Classes was Fantastic, it didn’t matter if it was the front
runners battling for the lead or in the middle of the pack, the racing was good, clean
and hard.
Right from Race 1, the Boyd Motorcycles Supermoto Race set the scene, for the rest
of the day with plenty of battling going on through the field. Craig Scott #62(Honda
CRF450) enjoying the day taking out 3 race wins on the day and Chris Andrews
#4(KTM) and Hamish Boyd #45(Yamaha) battling out for the remaining podium
positions.
Following the Supermoto’s on the day was the Putoline Oils Senior Races, consisting
of Superbikes and 600 Supersports the racing was brilliant, on the ‘shorter track’ the
600’s were able to battle with the bigger Superbikes often Out-Braking the bigger
bikes, this was shown from the word go when Damon Rees took off and lead the
Bigger Bikes away from Jay Lawrence, Dillon Telford and brother Mitch Rees, it took
a few laps for Telford on his ‘Red Devil Racing’ Aprilia to get past Rees but when he
finally did the bigger bike got away from Damon’s 600 and Mitch’s CBR1000 and this
was Telford’s first Win of 3 for the Day.
Next up were the NV Motorcycles Combined Classic/Post Classic Races, Now this
made for some Fantastic racing with a few of the ‘Postie Boy’s’ arriving to the Dummy
Grid a bit late and had to start from ‘Pit Lane’, So with Glenn Eggleton, Gian Louie, SJ
Cavell and others sitting in pit lane this allowed Mark Hatton and Peter Smith to take
off and battle for the lead which they did, Hatton lead for most of the race until Smith
passed him inside turn 1 with only a lap remaining, but in the meantime Eggleton was
slicing his way through the field too 3rd place, there was good racing in their next two
races with Eggleton making it to the grid to take wins in the next 2 races.
The Honda Hamilton Clubmans provided plenty of entertainment throughout the day
with #23 Jordan Burley(Triumph) having a good day with 2 wins and a second placing
from #9 Mike Dawes getting two 3rds and a second with #42 Gary Morgan and #76
Wayne Oran(Kawasaki) grabbing a Win in Race 2 for the Class.
The Bridgestone Intermediate Races provided some interesting racing but the
Class was dominated throughout the day by #97 Nathan Jane(3 Wins), #89 Josh
Augustine(Suzuki) 3 2nd Placing’s and Eddie Kattenburg(Kawasaki) 3 3rd placings
The Shoei Junior Class was the final Class to race at the meeting, Jacob Stroud got
himself 3 Wins for the day on his Hyosung X4R, but didn’t have it all his own way and
had to race hard with #79 Leon Jacobs and #84 Shayne Lawrey(KTM) both leading
races through the day until Jacob came through for the Wins.

Jo Taylor Race Report R1 HMCC Winter Series
Aprilia RSV550 wow!!!! What a cool demon!! Saturday at Bruce McLaren Taupo Motorsport track came the time for this life long
partnership to begin, by our first ride together. (I had previously been out on the track
on Dillon’s superbike RSV4 RF so power of the 550 V-Twin was not a concern for me.)
Out on the track the RSV550 & I just jelled so well together, it has a nice torque
range & drives it out of corners awesomely and the Aprilia RS250 twin front Brembo’s
combined with EBC brake pads makes trail braking into corners lovely. On my first session out there I had my knee down on turn 7, the following sessions I
was dragging my knee at 4 corners & scraping the belly pan on race day.
Race day was good, I had mentally done a lot of prep so I had my nerves under
control. Qualifying was in the fog, I was happy with 1.24’19 which put me in 17th on
the grid, 4 seconds off 10th place, it was a big field as there was still 2 rows behind
me. Having never done a practise start on this bike before my jump off the line was
slow, then the mass load of bikes into turn one was something to get used to fast.
The race went well, I was still working on my lines, getting entry & exits right, having
not ridden for 3 months 6 laps felt like forever & I got tired towards the final few, but
finished in a good place & was happy for us both to be developing well. Race two start was better but I got swallowed up in the first corner then had a mass
load of bikes pass me through turn 2 & 3, I lost concentration & started to run wide, I
was going backwards. So I gathered my thoughts and focused on my race & my lines,
my pace had dropped due to wanting to get my lines right & tiredness was seeping in..
I finished but was exhausted. I did some post race homework, combined with 20 min
nap I was then ready to give this last race the best performance I can..!
And I did, my start was great, turn one I got a gap on the exit to turn 2 and blasted
through turns 3,4 & 5. On lap two I did my best lap yet a 1.21’70 dropping 3 second
from qualifying and maintaining fairly consistent times, dropping my position in that
race down to 15th. It was a great end to a successful day, the bike held together, I
learnt a lot about myself & this is just the beginning of a very awesome duo.. We both
have a lot of development to do before the Suzuki series & Nationals but we have all
winter for more testing.
A big thanks Hamilton Motorcycle club for they’re support!! Doug Cornes for a spectacular photography!
Also to my amazing partner for building such an awesome bike! I’m sure we both
made you super proud on our first race debut together. What have you unleashed!!?
Also a huge thanks to Bruce Telford (Horsepower Motorcycles) & Steve Bridge (F1
engineering) these guys are not only TT legends & amazing riders but also brilliant
engineers. Thanks to the Red Devil racing team & Graeme Cole for his words of wisdom. Also thanks to these great products & supporters

Team Aspire Race Reports
Ben Wilson
HMCC Winter Series Round-1
Saturday Testing:
Testing on Saturday was defiantly much needed as I hadn’t been on the bike since the
last round of the nationals. I feel that I really should have used this day to experiment
a bit more with gearing which may have made a difference on race day, as the day
progressed I began to fell more comfortable on the bike and started to learn the track
better which had changed a lot since I last rode at Taupo.
Qualifying:
In the qualifying session I managed to find a reasonable rhythm and set a time which I
was fairly happy with putting me in sixth on the grid just 3 hundredths of a second off
Campbell Grayling in fifth and 2 tenths in front of Turiana Banks in seventh.
Race 1:
As the race got underway I found my self boxed in off the start with no way to try and
make up places. As we came out of the third turn i found myself in sevenths behind
Turiana Banks I chased her for a lap before passing her into the first turn and holding
this position for a lap however trying to push a bit to hard through the top chicane
saw me get a bit sideways and lose my rhythm, it also allowed Turiana Banks to pass
me into the next chicane and start to gap me, I rode unsettled for the rest of the race
finally finishing in 7th.
Race 2:
In the second race I found myself sitting in 6th off the start this would also be my
finishing position with not much happening in the race other than passing a KTM 390
in the infield and getting passed on the straights. even thought I didn’t finish higher up
than I would have liked in this race but I enjoyed this race much more than the race
and was happy with how I found a good rhythm.
Race 3:
In the final race of the day I got off to a reasonable start and found myself sitting in
sixth on the back of a freight train consisting of two KTM’s, Turiana Banks and myself
i continued to chase this group slowly being left behind I found myself sitting in 6th
until Campbell Grayling out braked me into the first turn and put in a very good last
lap to catch the group in front of us unfortunately this was done a bit late but was a lot
of fun and put me in 7th.
A massive thanks to the club an all the flaggies that made the event possible. Also to
all my sponsors for there support.

Lastly a big thanks to Phil and Cheryl London for there brilliant hospitality at Te
Moenga Lodge would defiantly recommend this place for any one staying in Taupo.
Aaron Lambourne
Last weekend was my first race meeting at Taupo, and as always with me it was a
mixed bag of events.
Started off on the Saturday track day and I was going well and doing times that were
pretty respectable.
Come race day and it was freezing cold. Unfortunately my bike washed away from
me before t2 on the very first lap of qualifying, putting me 25th on a grid of 25.
It wasn’t all bad because I felt no pressure starting last as I knew I wouldn’t be able to
get to the front in just 6 laps, so I just enjoyed the racing. In the first race I managed to
claw my way up to 14th overall, still being a bit tense and cautious in the early laps.

‑17-

In the 2nd race I as more relaxed and finished in 10th overall which I was happy with.
Race 3 was basically just a repeat of race race 2 and I came home in 10th place again.
All in all was a fun weekend, except for Turiana Banks handing it to Ben Wilson and I.
Also a big thanks to Phil and Cheryl London for treating us for a night at the Te
Moenga Lodge.
Also thanks to all the sponsors as always, nothing would be possible if weren’t for you

Turiana Banks
Last weekend was the first round of the HMCC winter series and it was one of the best
weekends I’ve had for a long time. I got to ride a 250 for the first time. I rode on the
Saturday track day and quickly got the hang of the new bike, I felt comfortable and
was eager for the racing the next day. I had made a goal for myself to be doing times
of 1:23’s by the end of the weekend.
Qualifying
I was very anxious to go out for qualifying because I didn’t know where my times
would be compared to the others, but I was hoping that I would be able to get on
to one of the front 2 rows. I came out of qualifying on 7th on the gird just behind
Campbell and Ben. It was unfortunate that one of my team mates Aaron had a crash
in qualifying but it was good that he was okay. I was very happy with that and my
times were also in the 1:25’s.
Race One
I was more nervous then excited for the start of this race seeing as I’ve never started
a 250 before but I ended up having a really good first corner and came out in 4th. I
‑18-
ended the first race in 5th overall having a good race with Ben, Blair and Campbell
with Campbell finishing just in front of me. I managed to get my times down to a 1.23
which I was very happy about I had achieved my goal for the weekend.
Race Two
This race I was excited and determined to do better and to beat Campbell as well.
I didn’t get a very good start and had to fight my way through in turn one and turn
two having contact with another rider luckily both of us stayed up right. I managed to
finish 4th overall and get my times down to 1.22’s. This race was my best race over
the weekend I couldn’t stop smiling after coming in.
Race 3
I was having such a good day my only goal for the last race was to have fun. I
managed to get a really good start in the last race and came out of the first corner in
3rd. I had a good race with Leon, Shane and Blair but managed to finish 5th overall.
It was great to get such good results from riding the 250 for the first time. I was very
happy with my riding throughout the whole weekend. I wouldn’t have been able to
do it without the huge amount of support from everyone in the weekend. I would like
to say a huge thanks to Team Aspire, their support and the opportunity to ride the 250
is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank my dad (Clive) for his support and
helping me get there. Also HMCC and all the flaggies that made the event possible.
