21 How You Can Help
Throughout this report you will see
artwork created by CALM’s clients.
We invite you to look through the
pages so that you can see and feel
the impact CALM has made on the
lives of the children we serve.
Thank You and Goodbye from Cecilia
I promised myself that I would be a
grownup who really listened to kids. It has been the honor of my life
to have had such a meaningful, rewarding career where I have been
able to do just that.
W H E N I WA S 12 Y E A R S O L D ,
I am deeply grateful to CALM for making it
possible for me to help children find their voices,
heal their hearts, and give families a better future
together. As I prepare to retire at the end of
2015, I am reflecting back on all that CALM has
accomplished in the past 31 years.
There has been significant change, achievement
and growth since I joined CALM as a volunteer
in 1984. Over the years, I have been privileged to
serve in many roles, each new assignment filled
with challenge and excitement. I am most grateful
to my predecessor Dr. Anna Kokotovic for her
vision of clinical excellence and for developing a
model we have continued to successfully build
upon in my eight years as Chief Executive Officer.
During this time, I am proud to note that we have…
• Increased CALM’s presence and impact across
all of Santa Barbara County with thriving offices
now in Santa Maria and Lompoc in addition to
Santa Barbara
• Introduced CALM’s highly effective
prevention and early intervention services
into eight preschools
• Doubled CALM’s intensive community-based
services in partnership with both Santa Barbara
County Children’s Mental Health and Child
Welfare Services
• Expanded our depth of evidence-based
practices which ensures unwavering excellence
in the delivery of CALM’s clinical services
These achievements have positively impacted
hundreds of children and families in the diverse
communities we serve. They were made possible
because of an extraordinarily talented staff;
a dedicated Board of Trustees and Advisory
Committee; a tireless team of Auxiliary members
who have been there from the start; and an
exceptionally generous community of donors. All
of these individuals believe deeply that the most
vulnerable members of our community deserve
to live their lives free of abuse and exposure to
violence.
Cecilia Rodriguez, MFT
Chief Executive Officer
I leave CALM with a sense
of great pride in what we have
accomplished together.
I leave CALM with a sense of great pride in
what we have accomplished together. I close this
chapter of my life with contentment and complete
confidence that our community will continue to
walk with CALM on its important journey of taking
families from hurt to hope.
Cecilia Rodriguez, MFT

calm Annual Report 2014.2015
Welcome from Our Board President
full of growth for CALM. In June 2014,
the Board approved an ambitious strategic plan, which calls for
CALM to fulfill its mission to prevent, assess and treat child abuse
in all of Santa Barbara County.
T H I S PA S T Y E A R H A S B E E N
Since then we have added a Welcome Every
Baby program in Santa Maria and Guadalupe.
We provided 695 home visits to new moms;
helping them with nutrition, sleep problems,
crying and tantrums, and child development issues.
I am especially proud that we have diversity in our
staff to meet these needs in our community.
We have also significantly expanded our
partnership with preschools in south Santa
Barbara County. Our work with the Isla Vista
Youth Projects, with the Santa Barbara Unified
School District and with Storyteller Children’s
Center reached more than 600 children and
teachers. Teachers who received support from
CALM were significantly happier in their work,
felt more competent partnering with parents and
felt less stressed overall than those who did not
participate in this program.

The coming year will be one of transition. Our
esteemed CEO, Cecilia Rodriguez will be retiring
and the Board will be welcoming a new leader to
CALM. Cecilia has spent the past 31 years as a
leading advocate for children in our community.
Her tremendous compassion and clear vision
have helped CALM always keep children as our
top priority. I will personally miss working with
Cecilia tremendously. She has been a friend, a
partner and an inspiration.
As we move into the second year of our strategic
plan, CALM will continue in its mission to prevent
child abuse, to heal children who have been hurt
by abuse and neglect and to use assessment to
ensure excellence in all that we do.

Planned Giving
Recognizing Donors Sandra and Gene Robertson
Sandy is the Secondary GATE Coordinator at the Santa Barbara Unified
School District and Gene is a retired Systems Engineering Manager.
As they planned their legacy, they decided to include CALM.
How did you first learn about CALM?
In 1987, CALM delivered a presentation to our faculty at Santa Barbara Junior High School,
where I was teaching.
What inspired you to include CALM in your will?
We were inspired to include CALM in our will because we have seen the excellent work
they have done with families in crisis.
What do you hope CALM will be able to accomplish in the future?
I hope that CALM will continue to provide intervention and education services to families,
especially children, who are in need of both protection and long-term family counseling.
Children’s Legacy Society
Members of the Children’s Legacy Society have expressed their commitment to CALM
by making a bequest to CALM in their will, or by creating a Charitable Remainder Trust
with CALM as a beneficiary. For more information on how you can make CALM part of
your legacy, please contact the Development Office at (805) 965-2376.

The Work We Do at calm
“You took a
broken family
and showed
us life will
be OK.”
Father of two
CALM’s continuum of care enables us to prevent and treat child abuse. We assess
our work consistently to make sure that we are successfully changing children’s
lives. CALM employs EVIDENCE-BASED practices—meaning that our therapeutic
interventions have been studied, tested and shown to be effective. CALM believes
that every child deserves to be loved and no one should suffer from abuse or
neglect. All our work is designed to strengthen families, provide health and safety
for children and to build a world free of abuse.
Great Beginnings – Prevention and Early Intervention
Great Beginnings serves families with children 0 – 5 and is aimed toward prevention
and early intervention. Great Beginnings programs include:
• Healthy Families home visitation
• Child-Parent Psychotherapy
•Safecare
• Preschool Mental Health Consultation
• Postpartum support
• Welcome Every Baby
• Parents’ empowerment groups
Intensive Community-Based Treatment

The Whatever it Takes (WIT) team provides intensive therapeutic interventions
to children and families across all of Santa Barbara County. The WIT program serves
children who need the highest level of care. These clients include children who are
severely emotionally disturbed or mentally ill, children in Foster Care and children
who are impacted by parent addiction. Therapists devote from 3 to 15 hours per
client each week. WIT programs include:
• Intensive In-Home Therapy
• Family Treatment Drug Court and
FRESH Start (Families in Recovery Embracing Sobriety and Health)
• Helping Others in Parenting Environments (HOPE)

The Work We Do at calm
Treatment On-Site at CALM
We serve children of all ages and their families who have experienced sexual abuse,
physical abuse, violence in their home, or neglect. Center-based programs also
work toward prevention by providing resources at local schools and by providing
family group support to end the cycle of violence and abuse. CALM therapists use
art therapy, play therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive
behavior therapy to support children’s healing. Center-based programs include:
• Family Violence Program
• Individual and family therapy for children who have experienced abuse
• Front porch – early intervention
• Juvenile Offender Treatment Program
• School-based prevention
• HEAL – group support for adults abused as children
A Center for Learning Excellence
CALM is a premier training site for psychologists, social workers and marriage and
family therapists who are working toward licensure. Our Psychology and Training
Department provides support to all of CALM’s clinical programs and provides
psychological assessment to inform treatment and evaluate program outcomes.
CALM employs the following evidence-based treatments in its practice:
• Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
• Child-Parent Psychotherapy
• Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy
• Dialectical Behavior Therapy
• Art Therapy
• Play Therapy
• Sand Tray Therapy
Forensic Interviews
A forensic interview is conducted after an
allegation of abuse or assault is made to
law enforcement or Child Welfare Services.
CALM’s trained Child Forensic Interview
Specialists interview the child in the Sexual
Assault Response Team Cottage, with
locations in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and
Lompoc. The interview is videotaped, and
law enforcement observes through a oneway mirror, which allows them to gather
information they need without a separate
interview. Our interviewers are skilled
in developmental stages and age-appropriate
questioning techniques, sensitivity to the
target population’s culture and language,
and competence in delivering culturally
appropriate services.
“I can’t act like I don’t have my
bad days because we all do.
But now when I feel down, I know
how to cope with it. I used to hide
my feelings and never open up.
Now I can talk about anything.”

Adopt-A-Family
The 2014 holiday season was a rush of gift wrapping, fun shopping trips, brightly colored bows
and exclamations of joy. There were even some happy tears shed by the families and CALM
employees that were overcome by the amazing generosity shown by the community. Thanks
to your kindness nearly 1,000 children across Santa Barbara County had a gift (or many) to
open for the holidays. This act of love is more than a physical gift; it shows the families that
they live in a community that cares.
A special thank you to our caring Adopt-A-Family supporters!
