Rainy and sometimes severe weather ceased just in time for the early morning start of the semi-annual Chicagoland
Antique Advertising Slot Machine and Juke Box Show on April 10th-12th. As usual bargain hunters armed
with gloves and flashlights scoured the pre-dawn parking lot of Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles, Illinois, on
Friday morning. At 7 a.m. some dealers moved inside the
Megan Center to mingle with early visitors who paid a $50
premium to snag early buys. The regular admission for Saturday
and Sunday was a more modest $7 per person.

Pharmacy Memorabilia Takes Center Stage at
Hack’s Auction in Pecatonica, Illinois

It was a full house as usual at the Hack’s Auction Center for the late March event.
And every piece of the thousands of examples of antique and vintage drug store
memorabilia came from a single consignor: Pinnow Pharmacy, still very much in
business right on Main Street in little Brodhead, Wisconsin. It’s had several names
as it’s been bought and sold over the generations, understandable for a pharmacy
that’s served Brodhead for around 125 years and counting.
They did have a problem though: countless boxes of antique and vintage drug store
advertising, fixtures, and stock that had been accumulating since the 19th century.
Luckily, someone there gave Hack’s Auction & Realty a call. “It’s among the best
drug store auctions we’ve ever held,” auctioneer Swan Hachmeister told me, “and
we encountered many odd devices that took a while to identify.”
Swan showed me one example, a little cast iron machine with gears and a crank. It
turned out to be a pharmacist’s cork roller, used to compress tiny corks before they
were inserted in pill bottles. A buyer later paid $95 for the device. Swan had a little
help with its identification though: a 1914 Peter Van Schaack & Sons illustrated
pharmacy catalog that was found in one of the boxes. And sure enough, that exact
cork roller was offered in the catalog, along with thousands of other drug store supplies of the day. The hardcover book was in pristine condition, and later sold for
$350.
Of course, the drug store advertising pieces found ready buyers too. That previously mentioned Dr. Price’s Extracts display case that made $1,100 was the winner
among them. Another glass showcase, this one sporting a “Quincy Show Case” metal
plaque, sold for $700. Other auction highlights included everything from a matched
set of vintage light-up show jars that sold for $450 to an oak display table with steel
“goat feet” that made a surprising $475.

Dealers & Buyers from Across the Country Swarm Chicago for the
Annual Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine & Jukebox Show

It was a 1,200-mile drive to the show for William Bil of Silver Springs, Fla.
The dealer pointed with pride to a “very rare” Mills 1936 Tycoon pinball game that
offered cash payouts for skilled players. The fancy nickel-plated 4-foot-long device
was priced at $2,900. Drawing attention at the same spot was a 1920s “new old
stock” hand-carved carousel camel, complete with glass eyes, tagged at $7,500.
It was a shorter drive for the dealer across the aisle, Bob Baxa, of Plainfield,
Ill., who showed off a load of juke boxes. Many folks stopped to admire his 1958
Rockola 1464 wall mount Juke with custom floor stand, measuring 65-inches tall
priced at $6,700. The 10-year veteran also offered a mix of brand new retro jukes
that could play records at your place for $8,800 to $10,000 each.
Favorite rock 'n roll tunes could be heard from a restored Seeburg 100 juke
box playing at the booth of Bob and Richard Sandage of Louisville, Ky. The brothers, 25-year regulars at the sem-annual Chicagoland event, hung a tag of $6,500 on
the front of the machine and a fully fancy restored and replated 2 _-foot-tall 15-cent
cigarette machine could be taken home from the brothers for $2,100.
Still more vending machines were on display at the booth of Randy Razoog
of Grand Rapids, Mich. A 9-inch-tall cast metal 1920s penny-operated “Nut House”
machine, shaped like a house, could vend goodies at your place for $1,750. At the
same spot, a 16-inch-tall tin and glass Master 1-cent gumball machine was priced at
$345. Razoog said he had been showing at Chicagoland on and off “since the beginning.”
Several shelves jammed with slot machines, trade stimulators and other coin
operated items filled the booth of Alan Sax of nearby Long Grove, Ill. Many stopped
to admire - and try - his early 5-cent Clawson dice throwing machine priced at
$17,500. Still another dice machine was a 25-cent Bally that could entertain you for
$16,500.
There were two tags on the restored 6-foot-tall Normandy Chimes National
Penny Scale offered by Jeff Storck of Round Hill, Va. One tag stated $6,500 - and
the other said “sold!” The fancy oddball scale played a deep rich series of melodic
chimes when a penny was dropped in - and would return your penny if you were
lucky, all the while reading your weight. The penny scale collector/dealer said he
has 450 circa 1890s - 1940s machines at home in “a big basement and a big building.”
“I love Chicago,” said Charlie Molnar a retired Chicago policeman who set
up at the show and offered a massive display of more than 200 badges priced from
$25 to $900. The badges ranged in age from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Many
folks stopped to admire his pair of restored cast iron police and fire call-boxes, complete with single floor stand, priced at $2,900 for the whole package..

Although a two-head countertop “partners fan” which could cool two people at once, are considered rare there were TWO of them offered by Otto Dorris of
Bixby, Okla. Taking still another step into rarity, one of them was water powered!
The 1880s Indiana Waterfan, with fancy nickel-plated cast iron clawfoot base could
move air at your house for $6,000. The more conventional chrome plated 1950s
electric motor model could do the job for $750.
Advertising sign collectors hovered around the booth of Skip Urich of
Pittsburg, Kan., for a look at his early 1900s rolled edge 18 x by 14-inch tin Paul
Jones Louisville, Ky., whiskey advertising sign. Titled “The Temptation of St.
Anthony,” it depicted a farm scene with a black woman holding watermelon slice, a
young lad on his knees and an elderly black man displaying a bottle of whiskey. As
browsers pointed to the $2,950 price tag, one of them said, “Mark it sold”
“I always buy and sell oddball stuff at the show,” said Bill Howard of Akron,
Ohio, and once again he didn't disappoint. Many people stopped to admire his early
1900s 24-inch-tall papier mache' animated figure of a top hated black man with outstretched arm. His head, arm and eyes moved or nodded with a breeze or nudge.
Howard said the figure was “very rare to find in this fine condition” and added,
“$4,000 gets it home.”
Vintage gas and oil items were plentiful at the Chicagoland Show and 30year veteran Randy Ross filled three booths inside and a trailerfull outside. Traveling
from Hampshire, Ill., Ross said prices ranged from $400 to $4,000, with “a whole lot
of goodies selling at the show.
One of the most unusual signs at the show was at the booth of Melissa Ziel
and Adam Bernasek of nearby Elgin, Ill. The handmade cardboard piece stated:
“Please BUY and help fund our honeymoon.” The engaged couple offered an eclectic mix of collectables, saying they were targeting a September Honeymoon. As the
show ended, Melissa said they were happy to net $2,000 for “75 percent of our
needs.”
Several families said they were at the show to celebrate spring break. As one
father said, “”I'm here buying and selling while the wife and kids are enjoying the
two swimming pools at Pheasant Run. One of the pools offers a partial wall on one
end where children of all ages can duck underneath for outside or inside swims. The
dad added with a chuckle, “they're having fun all day and so am I.”
The next Chicagoland Advertising Slot Machine and Juke Box Show will
be held Nov. 14, 15 and 16.

Antiques Abbreviations

A while ago a reader asked about explaining some of the abbreviations they
encounter in auction ads. This got me thinking about the abbreviations auctioneers
use and why we use them. After a phone call to Gloria I offered to put together a listing.
By definition, an abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase used for brevity. Within context and reason it identifies certain aspects of a piece to the buyer without needlessly going into detail. A lamp buyer will know what a “bracket lamp” is.
It’s unnecessary to say, “Victorian cast iron wall bracket with mercury glass reflector, chimney & drop in finger font”. Most auctioneers use abbreviations in order to
keep the size of the ad affordable. However it can be too much of a good thing and
some of the more arcane descriptions can confuse or mislead the reader. To a person
who collects a particular category most abbreviations in that category are readily recognized. To anybody else they are probably gibberish. Even a novice farm toy buyer
won’t need a three day weekend to decipher IH, McD & JD. WWI & WWII are obvious but would most folks recognize CW (Civil War) out of context? Coins, firearms,
Hummels (152/A TMK3 UB K255 HB, anyone?) and other categories all have their
own abbreviations that often are exclusive to that field. But if you are a glassware
buyer does it really matter if you can’t translate a 28g, o/u, d-bbl, ss w/syn stock and
vr?
Some descriptions, while not technically correct, get the point across. For example
“Jewel T’, (which is short for Jewel Tea, a grocery chain) takes up less space than
“Autumn Leaf”, (a pattern name for china offered as a premium by Jewel Tea). This
may seem like a trivial difference but similar descriptions over several publications
begin to add up.
A listing that encompassed all of the collecting fields would be more of a project than
I can take on but the following abbreviations should get you through most ads for

A&C - Arts & Crafts. Refers to the style of furniture usually associated with early
1900s Stickley. Often but erroneously referred to as Mission or Prairie.
ABC - American Brilliant Cut. Refers to the “Brilliant” period of late 19th/early 20th
century American cut glass
B&H – Bradley & Hubbard. A manufacturer of quality lighting and decorative accessories.
B&W – Blue & White. The glaze colors used on utilitarian stoneware that was often
found in the kitchen.
CI - Cast Iron.
COP – Century Of Progress. Typically refers to souvenirs hauled back from the
Chicago World’s Fair of 1933/34. Even in the middle of the Great Depression, a lot
of Wisconsinites made the trip to see the COP.
CRS - Somebody explained this to me once, but I can’t seem to remember what they
said.

gl - Gallon. Typically used when advertising stoneware capacity
For Rest - For Restoration. Don’t go to the auction expecting a cream puff.
GBCF - Glass Ball Claw Foot. Describes the foot usually found on late Victorian
parlor and lamp tables.
GWTW - Gone With The Wind. A style of lamp with a matching font and top globe.
Correctly referred to as a parlor lamp but popularly known as a Gone With The
Wind, after the movie of the same name.
LRRH- Little Red Riding Hood. Typically refers to the Regal China products that
feature her.
MIB - Mint In Box. Any item, but often a toy, that is in the same condition as new
and in the original box.
MOP - Mother of Pearl. Polished nacre usually derived from mollusk shells.
Typically found in jewelry, ladies dresser articles, buttons and in the windows of
RPOG art.
NIB - New In Box. Similar to above but often assumed to be of modern production
NOS - New Old Stock. Old merchandise, often with original manufacturer’s tags and
merchant’s price tags, that has never been sold or used.
NWOT - New With Original Tags, but sometimes used as New With Out Tags. eBay
sellers are usually guilty of using this both ways. If buying online, clarify before bidding.
o/b - Outboard. An outboard motor.
OOB - Oil on Board. Art work done on a board, usually Masonite.
OOC - Oil on Canvas. Art work done on canvas.
Pre Pro - Pre Prohibition, prior to 1920. Refers specifically to alcohol related advertising.
Post Pro - Post Prohibition, after 1933. Refers specifically to alcohol related advertising.
QA - Queen Anne. Generally refers to a 1920’s or 30’s revival style exemplified by
a cabriole leg.
Repro - Reproduction. A good definition would require a separate article but you get
the idea. Occasionally people will use the slang “Repop” for repro or “Repo” which
is inaccurate and what happens to your car when Vinnie pulls up in a tow truck.
RPOG - Reverse Painted on Glass. Less common as ROG. Any item where the
design or artwork has been applied to the obverse side of the glass but typically a
lamp shade, decorative framed art or advertising items.
RPPC – Real Photo Post Card. Differentiates a post card that was printed, (developed) off your film from one that was commercially printed. These were so popular
that Kodak marketed the 3A folder specifically for the RPPC.
RR – Railroad.
RW – Red Wing. Red Wing, or less often, the several other stoneware companies that
called Red Wing, MN their home.
/s/ - Signed.
s/g - Salt Glaze. Refers to the type of glaze used on stoneware and to differentiate it
from the later, more common, zinc glaze.
TOC - Tin Over Cardboard. A type of sign made of tin wrapped over a piece of
paperboard and hung by a piece of short thread mounted to the back side of the sign.
Commonly used in the 1930’s and 40’s by brewing and other industries.
T&S- Time & Strike. Refers to clock movements. Differentiates between time only
and striking movements.

A Short History of Celluloid

How are these three items related
to the history of Celluloid?

A brief history lesson
about Celluloid buttons will
reveal the answers. Celluloid
was invented in 1869 by the American inventor, John Wesley Hyatt. It was developed from the compound Cellulose, which is a combination of wood fiber and
cotton fiber.
In 1862 the British inventor, Alexander Parkes, was given credit for
inventing Cellulose — the first true plastic. He named it Parkesine. In those early
years there was much chemical experimentation with Parkesine. They were looking for ways to stabilize and manipulate it so as to manufacture products for the
ever-growing world market. Although treating it with nitric acid produced many
uses for it, this method went by the wayside because it was still too unstable and
very costly to manufacture.
Around the same time that all of this chemical experimentation was
going on, an American company called Phelan and Collender in 1862 offered a
prize of $10,000 to anyone that could invent a satisfactory substitute for Ivory.
They used Ivory, which came primarily from elephant tusks, for the manufacturing of billiard balls. The game of Billiards was gaining in popularity at that time
and elephant tusks were becoming increasingly scarce. The company that
offered the $10,000 prize is still in business today and is known as the Brunswick
Corporation.
The American inventor John Wesley Hyatt took up the challenge in 1862.
Hyatt, who had over 100 patents to his name, was
determined to win the $10,000 prize. One day in
the mid-1860's while working in his lab, he accidently spilled a bottle of Colloidine on the
Cellulose material that he was experimenting with.
He found that it congealed his Cellulose into a
tough, flexible mass. He decided to make a demo
set of billiard balls with this new material. This
new material worked to some extent, but it was
still too unstable. It frequently caused small explosions when the billiard balls collided and the billiard balls would sometimes shatter because they had become too brittle.
So back to the laboratory he went. In 1868 he found a solution to these
problems. He found that when Camphor, which is a by-product of the Laurel tree,
was added to the raw Cellulose it caused the problems to disappear. He filed for
a patent in 1869, and he named his new product, Celluloid. This product was the
first thermoplastic: a substance molded under heat and pressure that would retain
its shape when the heat and pressure were removed. He also won the $10,000
prize.
Buttons were not on the list of the many products that used Celluloid in
their manufacturing processes in those early years. Combs, pins, umbrella handles, eyeglass frames, dentures, piano keys, photographic film, and billiard balls
all preceded buttons. The use of Celluloid in button manufacturing
did not start to appear until one or two decades later.
The earliest buttons that used Celluloid used it as a
clear sheet to protect lithographs and for background and trim.
Today, those earliest buttons that used Celluloid are called
Victorian Celluloid buttons.

because of its high flammability and its degradation problems. The common
degradation
problem occurred because the Camphor worked its way out of
the button. This degradation when combined with water or water vapor would
form a nitric acid gas that is very corrosive to metal, fabric, paper, and other
materials. Extreme heat and UV ray exposure
also contributed to the problem. Those things
caused the button, or buttons to become brittle
and they would develop deep crazing. The buttons affected would completely crumble away
in time.
What can you do if you see this type of
damage to your buttons? The answer is nothing
because there is no way to stop this degradation
once it has begun. The buttons affected should
be discarded and the remaining buttons should
be given a light cleaning.
How can you prevent this from happening to your buttons? Celluloid buttons should be

UV exposure and they should have proper ventilation and temperature controls.
With the proper care most all of your Celluloid buttons will be around for many
years to come.
After reading this short history on Celluloid, button collectors should
have a deep appreciation for the antique billiard balls of the past because without them, Celluloid buttons would never have been invented, and thus, we would
not have any to collect. Finally, do you know what the only Celluloid product
now made in any quantity is? The answer is the ping-pong ball!

34th Annual Blue & White Pottery Convention
to be held in East Peoria, Illinois

The Blue & White Pottery Club kicks off it's 34th Annual Convention on
Thursday, June 11 at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois. Early registration
begins at 3:30 p.m. and members can shop room sales in the afternoon and throughout the evening and from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. enjoy visiting with club members during
the hotel manager's reception in the atrium.
Friday, June 12 the club show & sale will see a big change. This
year, the show & sale will not only be stoneware, but open to quality antiques, making it more of an antique show. The show & sale opens to the membership at 10 a.m..
There is also a silent auction, viewing & presentation of member displays, viewing of
past club commemoratives, the business meeting, a seminar (this years seminar will
be on Sleepy Eye). The Friday night activity will not only be a "Fun Auction" but will
include quality antiques as well. NOTE: For non members of the club, the Show &
Sale will be open for an admission charge of $15.00 and this will also give you a one
year membership to the Blue & White Pottery Club with quarterly newsletters.
Saturday morning the club's consignment auction begins at 10:30 a.m. The
club already has several quality pieces of stoneware
consigned and we are looking to have about 150-175 pieces. Some of the rare and
hard to find include a Sleepy Eye Trivet, Large B&W Urn, B&W stoneware dog
attributed to Macomb Stoneware, Western Stoneware Egyptian Jardinaire. Other
items include 2 gallon White Hall Ice Water, White Hall butter crock with upside
down stamp, brown stoneware bear bank, B&W appleblossom pastry crock, & a large
variety of Western Stoneware brushware to name a few. There will be surprises as
always. This is just a few of the items that are consigned. The closing convention
activity is the Saturday evening banquet.
The Blue & White Pottery Club's current membership is 255 with
members from across the United States. To attend the convention & auction, you must
be a club member and registered for convention. Walkins are always welcome and
you can register on site. Membership information is available at the club website

webside and contact any board member. While visiting the website
you will find a full convention agenda, convention registration
form and photos from previous conventions.
