TIN
CANTON - For most of his
fishing life, nationally known
local anger Don Meissner
dismissed carp as big but
uninteresting creatures that
cruised through the waters of
the St. Lawrence River until the day he accidentally
hooked one and "I suddenly
found my boat being towed
by this giant fish."
His respect for the species,
and for catch-and-release
carp fishing, was made permanent during last summer's St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament, a FISHCAP and St.
Lawrence County Chamber
of Commerce event.
"I have never been so
amazed and affected by any
one sport, than during those
three days engaging with
and observing this tournament."
Meissner, longtime host of
PBS's Streamside fishing
series, is currently coordinator of the county FISHCAP
program.
He speaks of the excitement of the young anglers,
the camaraderie among the
contestants, the intricacies of
carp fishing, and the professionalism of the event as a
total package that completely won him over.
"Carp fishing is really an
ultimate sport," Meissner
notes. "There's real science to
it - from knowing about the
fish, to the special baits, to
the special equipment."
A bait "sling shot," specific
to carp fishing, shoots bait
into the water and looks easy
enough - but isn't, Meissner
discovered. "It was pretty
comical when I tried it," he
admits.
The Best Fishing
But he comes back to being
so impressed by the passion
of the young carp anglers at
the tournament.
"There is something about
the possibility of battling a
huge fish that can excite
anyone, at any age. And
while the kids I spoke with
at the tournament all said
they enjoyed going after all
the other species in our
North Country waters,
almost to a youngster they
said they enjoyed carp fishing the most."
"It's the battle," Meissner
reports. "The excitement of
catching a monster, a huge

boating, fishing and beautiful

are lightly wooded, with a dayuse area and picnic pavilion
nearby.
Coles Creek includes both
wooded and open campsites,
as well as a beach on Lake St.
Lawrence. The park includes a
playground, playing fields and
a large pavilion. A marina is
located at the mouth of the
creek, just north of the park.
The Cranberry Lake area is
one of the largest remote
areas remaining in the state.
The park is adjacent to
150,000 acres of forest preserve and includes many miles
of marked trails and ponds.
Activities available at Cranberry Lake include hiking,
swimming and camping, with
many of the campsites having
trees between them for some
added privacy.
Eel Weir State Park is
located along the banks of the
Oswegatchie River just two
miles from Black Lake. Both
the Oswegatchie and Black
Lake are known for excellent
bass fishing and are ideal for
canoes or row boats. Eel Weir
is a small, secluded park ideal
for those looking to get away
from it all. The park includes
a picnic area and pavilion.
Higley Flow is nestled

are separated by pine trees.
The park is hilly and heavily
wooded, with a beach on the
reservoir of the river.
Jacques Cartier State Park,
Morristown, hosts a sandy
beach and boater’s docks on
the St. Lawrence River. The
park’s biggest draws are its
boating opportunities and
excellent fishing. Its large
open lawns encourage games
and picnics. A playground and
shaded picnic area are also
located nearby.

Merrickville: On The Rideau River
Merrickville-recognized by
historians as Canada’s best preserved and restored 19th Century Village-is right at your
doorstep, situated on the winding Rideau River, just 45 minutes south of Ottawa. Come discover a way of life that has long
since gone by the wayside, but
not forgotten. Come take a
leisurely stroll back in time
down the streets of Merrickville.
Coined “The Jewel of the
Rideau” Merrickville is a village
which really does have something for everyone. No matter
your taste, no matter your budget-no matter your interests,
Merrickville has it all, from a
warm, romantic atmosphere for
two, to an intriguing family destination spot where quality
time really takes on its true
meaning. Settled in the 1700’s
by William Merrick, a millright
and United Empire Loyalist,
this intriguing village is a his-
tory buff ’s dream come true.
Merrickville is home to the oldest operating foundry in
Canada. Village Metalsmiths
Outlet & Gift shop has been in
operation since 1840.
The beautiful Rideau Canal
was named on UNESCO's
(United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage list, joining ranks with other landmark
sites such as the Great Barrier
Reef, the Grand Canyon and
the Canadian Rocky Mountain
Park.
The Canal is one of the oldest
canals dating back to the early
19th century that is still operational with most of its structures intact.
For the Artistic, this quaint
village is home to over 30 resident professionals; working
from studios, displaying in their
galleries, and selling their originals. You’ll be amazed at the talents of renowned painters,

Take Tour Of Singer Castle Relax And Enjoy Some
HAMMOND - Take in some
classic Northern New York history and beauty with a visit to
Singer Castle on Dark Island
on the St. Lawrence River.
Singer Castle is, according to
its official website, www.singercastle.com, the only castle on
the river to be completed, fullyfurnished and resided in during the heyday of the “great
builders” and industrials in
New York. The castle remained
in the possession of the original
Bourne family from its construction in 1905 until the mid1960s.
Frederick G. Bourne was a
self-made millionaire. The
Bourne family had a 1,000-acre
summer estate in Oakdale,
Long Island. But he wanted to
surprise his wife, Emma, and
their children with an island
hunting retreat.
Mr. Bourne bought Dark
Island and designed and built
the castle, originally known as
"The Towers,” for $500,000.
Tons of granite quarried from
nearby Oak Island were
brought over ice and water
from 1902 to 1904 to construct
the castle. Italian stonecutters
were hired to shape the granite
for the four-story, 28-room castle, four-story tower, and a elaborate boathouse which housed
a workshop and powerhouse
and one of Bourne's steampowered vessels.
More than 2,000 loads of topsoil were brought from Canada
to cover the eight acres of rock.
Singer Castle is open daily
until Labor Day. It is also open
Saturdays and Sundays from
Labor Day until Oct. 9.
A visit to the castle features
guided tours. Tours are $14 for
adults, $11 for seniors and $6
for children ages 4 to 12.
Children under 4 years of
age must be carried by adults.
No strollers are allowed within
the castle.
Canadian rates are available.

Ogdensburg To Host Founder’s Day Weekend
OGDENSBURG - More
than 250 years ago the roar
of cannon fire echoed over
the St. Lawrence River on
the now peaceful stretch
between Ogdensburg and
Prescott, Ontario.
The final battle of the
French and Indian War - the
battle that truly led to the
French losing Canada - was
fought here in August 1760.
Founder’s Day Weekend,
July 23-24, is the annual
commemoration of Ogdensburg’s French colonial history and the Battle of the
Thousand Islands. Lighthouse Point radiates the
color and pageantry of the
military re-enactment and
colonial trade fair. As many
as 500 participants from the
U.S. and Canada, dressed in
18th-century clothes, establish a bustling encampment
of white canvass tents.
A vibrant French and English naval contingent moors
their historically accurate
small boats along the shore
and bivouacs there. The
crews race on Saturday
morning, but Saturday and
Sunday afternoon the boats
with bow guns and muskets
blazing battle on the river.
The skirmishing on the
water leads into the land
battle. Across the width of
Lighthouse Point, the opposing forces and their Native
allies maneuver in the fog of
war - the grey smoke from
their muskets and artillery.
Civilian life of the colonies
springs to life, too. Women
and
children,
pipers,
dancers, artisans and traditional trades create a festive
atmosphere. Sutlers, the
merchants that followed the
armies, set up their shops to
furnish just about anything

a reenactor, or 21st century
tourist, could want.
The reenactment of the
Battle of the Thousand
Islands and the colonial
trade fair are adjacent to the
archaeological remains of
Fort de la Présentation, built
by the French in 1749. When
the tide of war turned in
favor of the English, the
French vacated the fort in
early 1759 and continued the
construction of Fort Lévis
downriver on Ile Royal, now
Chimney Island. La Présen-
tation was a wooden stockade; Lévis was a substantial
fortification.
The 1760 Battle of the
Thousand Islands began
with the capture of the
French corvette L’Outauaise
by a swarm of English row
galleys off abandoned Fort de
la Présentation. The battle
continued with the successful, weeklong siege of Fort
Lévis. The English pressed
on to accept the capitulation
of Montreal.
For more than a decade,
the annual Founder’s Day
Weekend has honored the
shared history of Canada
and the United States. Here,
where the Oswegatchie
River flows into the St.
Lawrence, the Fort La
Présentation Association
plans to rebuild the historic
fort as a high quality tourist
attraction.

Attend Summer Concerts In Morristown
By MATT MCALLISTER
MORRISTOWN - “The
master of the triple entendre,” along with a recently
retired emeritus of audio and
radio studies at SUNY Fredonia highlight this summer’s
Morristown Concert Series.
“Among our offerings are
performances by Rick Bates
(Tas
Cru)
and
Dan
Berggren,” said Christopher
B. T. Coffin, the event’s organizer.
He said concert series
events this summer are moving full-time to Chapman
Park, with the second floor of
the Gateway Museum as a
back-up, in case of rain.
“Our first choice for a sunny
summer night is outside,” Mr.
Coffin said.
Tas Cru, performing as part
of August’s arts and crafts festival, is a bluesy storyteller
who spent much of his early
career performing throughout
the St. Lawrence River area.
Now a nationally-renowned
solo act in a band setting, he
tours the blues festival scene
and is admired for his tough
vocals and slide guitar playing.
“My goal is to take listeners
Cardboard Boat
Races July 16 At
Cranberry Lake
CRANBERRY LAKE - The
Cranberry Lake Boat Club
and the Cranberry Lake
Lodge will join forces on July
16 to host a combined boat
show and the 3rd annual
cardboard boat race. The boat
show and the race are open to
the general public.
This year’s event will
include music by “Giant and
the Green Foam,” and an allafternoon concession and
refreshment stand will be provided by The Lodge. New
kayaks, canoes and boats will
be on site for viewing, test driving and purchasing, sponsored by Adirondack Lake and
Trails Outfitters of Saranac
Lake.
Area boaters are encouraged to display their antique
boats, canoes, motors and/or
boats they are really proud of.
The new docks at The Lodge
will allow individuals to display their favorite boat in the
water. Then you will be ready
after the boat show to join the
annual parade around the
lake.
Last year’s cardboard boat
race attracted over 300 people.
Organizers are looking for new
entries and new challenges
among boat builders. Church
youth groups, fire departments,
student organizations within
the school system, governmental agencies, healthcare facilities, restaurants or simply
challenge your neighbor.
Instructions and tips on
building a cardboard boat can
be found at www.cranberrylakeboatclub.org. Click on
upcoming events.

beyond the literal, and even
what’s suggested, to where
meaning is as much felt as
understood,” Mr. Bates says in
an online review at www.stlblues.net.
Mr. Berggren, according to
information from the New
York Folklore Society, has
been collecting, writing and
singing folk music of the
Adirondacks for the past 30
years. Recently retired from
SUNY Fredonia, he grew up
in the Adirondack mountains,
where stories and songs from
his childhood influence the 12
albums he has released with
Sleeping Giant Records.
His latest release, “Fresh
Territory,” “builds on Adirondack roots and explores the
many dimensions of home,
hard-working folks, taking
care of our planet and each
other,” the Folklore Society’s
website says.
A full list of summer concert
events follows:

Potsdam Summer Festival July 14-16
POTSDAM – The 44th
annual Potsdam Summer Festival will be held July 14-16 in
downtown Potsdam.
Over the years, the threeday event has become one of
the most exciting events for
local residents.
It’s pushed back a week
from its usual slot during the
second weekend in July
because of the Fourth of July
holiday falling on a Monday
this year.
As usual, officials organized
the event to coincide with the
Alumni Weekends for the
local colleges and high
schools. The increased foot
traffic in the downtown area
has proven to be a great draw
for local businesses.
“This weekend is always a
big boost for for the village,
especially restaurants and
retail vendors,” Potsdam
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marylee E. Ballou said. “It is just a great
community event.”
Ms. Ballou, who is organizing the event for the second
consecutive year, said this
year will feature musical performances beginning at noon
each day and continuing well
into the evening.
The chamber has had no
problem filling their musical
lineup as all performance
slots have been taken. Visitors
can expect a full lineup of acts
ranging from jazz to rock and
roll to country music, providing something for everyone.
The popular Potsdam Community Band will also be performing Friday night at the
gazebo in Ives Park. The 60member group was moved
from their usual Saturday
afternoon slot because they
drew such a large crowd in
years past.
A number of other local
bands will also be performing,
both on the main stage and in
the gazebo. The festival will
also feature a craft show, flea
market, antique car show, the
Tour de Potsdam 5K walk/run,
sidewalk vendors and a steel
drum workshop among other
attractions.
“If people don’t like who is
performing on one stage, they
can head over to the other or
visit the local businesses or
buy food from the vendors,”
Ms. Ballou said. “There will
always be something to do.”
The German House, a vendor providing all types of German cuisine, will return to the
festival for the first time since
2009, much to the delight of
the local bratwurst lovers.
“A lot of people were wondering where the German
House had been the past two
ning at Snell Hall and continuing on Elm Street, turning
onto Market Street, marching
past the grandstand and turning onto Main Street, before
ending back at Downtown
Snell Hall.
“We’re getting down to the
wire but it’s all coming
together,” Ms. Ballou said.
As usual downtown traffic
will be closed off to traffic
from 1 Market St. to 35 Market St. all weekend.

Attend Summer Concerts In Morristown
By MATT MCALLISTER
MORRISTOWN - “The
master of the triple entendre,” along with a recently
retired emeritus of audio and
radio studies at SUNY Fredonia highlight this summer’s
Morristown Concert Series.
“Among our offerings are
performances by Rick Bates
(Tas
Cru)
and
Dan
Berggren,” said Christopher
B. T. Coffin, the event’s organizer.
He said concert series
events this summer are moving full-time to Chapman
Park, with the second floor of
the Gateway Museum as a
back-up, in case of rain.
“Our first choice for a sunny
summer night is outside,” Mr.
Coffin said.
Tas Cru, performing as part
of August’s arts and crafts festival, is a bluesy storyteller
who spent much of his early
career performing throughout
the St. Lawrence River area.
Now a nationally-renowned
solo act in a band setting, he
tours the blues festival scene
and is admired for his tough
vocals and slide guitar playing.
“My goal is to take listeners
Cardboard Boat
Races July 16 At
Cranberry Lake
CRANBERRY LAKE - The
Cranberry Lake Boat Club
and the Cranberry Lake
Lodge will join forces on July
16 to host a combined boat
show and the 3rd annual
cardboard boat race. The boat
show and the race are open to
the general public.
This year’s event will
include music by “Giant and
the Green Foam,” and an allafternoon concession and
refreshment stand will be provided by The Lodge. New
kayaks, canoes and boats will
be on site for viewing, test driving and purchasing, sponsored by Adirondack Lake and
Trails Outfitters of Saranac
Lake.
Area boaters are encouraged to display their antique
boats, canoes, motors and/or
boats they are really proud of.
The new docks at The Lodge
will allow individuals to display their favorite boat in the
water. Then you will be ready
after the boat show to join the
annual parade around the
lake.
Last year’s cardboard boat
race attracted over 300 people.
Organizers are looking for new
entries and new challenges
among boat builders. Church
youth groups, fire departments,
student organizations within
the school system, governmental agencies, healthcare facilities, restaurants or simply
challenge your neighbor.
Instructions and tips on
building a cardboard boat can
be found at www.cranberrylakeboatclub.org. Click on

beyond the literal, and even
what’s suggested, to where
meaning is as much felt as
understood,” Mr. Bates says in
an online review at www.stlblues.net.
Mr. Berggren, according to
information from the New
York Folklore Society, has
been collecting, writing and
singing folk music of the
Adirondacks for the past 30
years. Recently retired from
SUNY Fredonia, he grew up
in the Adirondack mountains,
where stories and songs from
his childhood influence the 12
albums he has released with
Sleeping Giant Records.
His latest release, “Fresh
Territory,” “builds on Adirondack roots and explores the
many dimensions of home,
hard-working folks, taking
care of our planet and each
other,” the Folklore Society’s
website says.
A full list of summer concert
events follows:
• July 18, 7 to 9 p.m. - Folk

Potsdam Summer Festival July 14-16
POTSDAM – The 44th
annual Potsdam Summer Festival will be held July 14-16 in
downtown Potsdam.
Over the years, the threeday event has become one of
the most exciting events for
local residents.
It’s pushed back a week
from its usual slot during the
second weekend in July
because of the Fourth of July
holiday falling on a Monday
this year.
As usual, officials organized
the event to coincide with the
Alumni Weekends for the
local colleges and high
schools. The increased foot
traffic in the downtown area
has proven to be a great draw
for local businesses.
“This weekend is always a
big boost for for the village,
especially restaurants and
retail vendors,” Potsdam
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marylee E. Ballou said. “It is just a great
community event.”
Ms. Ballou, who is organizing the event for the second
consecutive year, said this
year will feature musical performances beginning at noon
each day and continuing well
into the evening.
The chamber has had no
problem filling their musical
lineup as all performance
slots have been taken. Visitors
can expect a full lineup of acts
ranging from jazz to rock and
roll to country music, providing something for everyone.
The popular Potsdam Community Band will also be performing Friday night at the
gazebo in Ives Park. The 60member group was moved
from their usual Saturday
afternoon slot because they
drew such a large crowd in
years past.
A number of other local
bands will also be performing,
both on the main stage and in
the gazebo. The festival will
also feature a craft show, flea
market, antique car show, the
Tour de Potsdam 5K walk/run,
sidewalk vendors and a steel
drum workshop among other
attractions.
“If people don’t like who is
performing on one stage, they
can head over to the other or
visit the local businesses or
buy food from the vendors,”
Ms. Ballou said. “There will
always be something to do.”
The German House, a vendor providing all types of German cuisine, will return to the
festival for the first time since
2009, much to the delight of
the local bratwurst lovers.
“A lot of people were wondering where the German
House had been the past two
ning at Snell Hall and continuing on Elm Street, turning
onto Market Street, marching
past the grandstand and turning onto Main Street, before
ending back at Downtown
Snell Hall.
“We’re getting down to the
wire but it’s all coming
together,” Ms. Ballou said.
As usual downtown traffic
will be closed off to traffic
from 1 Market St. to 35 Market St. all weekend.

Ogdensburg To Host Founder’s Day Weekend
OGDENSBURG - More
than 250 years ago the roar
of cannon fire echoed over
the St. Lawrence River on
the now peaceful stretch
between Ogdensburg and
Prescott, Ontario.
The final battle of the
French and Indian War - the
battle that truly led to the
French losing Canada - was
fought here in August 1760.
Founder’s Day Weekend,
July 23-24, is the annual
commemoration of Ogdensburg’s French colonial history and the Battle of the
Thousand Islands. Lighthouse Point radiates the
color and pageantry of the
military re-enactment and
colonial trade fair. As many
as 500 participants from the
U.S. and Canada, dressed in
18th-century clothes, establish a bustling encampment
of white canvass tents.
A vibrant French and English naval contingent moors
their historically accurate
small boats along the shore
and bivouacs there. The
crews race on Saturday
morning, but Saturday and
Sunday afternoon the boats
with bow guns and muskets
blazing battle on the river.
The skirmishing on the
water leads into the land
battle. Across the width of
Lighthouse Point, the opposing forces and their Native
allies maneuver in the fog of
war - the grey smoke from
their muskets and artillery.
Civilian life of the colonies
springs to life, too. Women
and
children,
pipers,
dancers, artisans and traditional trades create a festive
atmosphere. Sutlers, the
merchants that followed the
armies, set up their shops to
furnish just about anything

a reenactor, or 21st century
tourist, could want.
The reenactment of the
Battle of the Thousand
Islands and the colonial
trade fair are adjacent to the
archaeological remains of
Fort de la Présentation, built
by the French in 1749. When
the tide of war turned in
favor of the English, the
French vacated the fort in
early 1759 and continued the
construction of Fort Lévis
downriver on Ile Royal, now
Chimney Island. La Présen-
tation was a wooden stockade; Lévis was a substantial
fortification.
The 1760 Battle of the
Thousand Islands began
with the capture of the
French corvette L’Outauaise
by a swarm of English row
galleys off abandoned Fort de
la Présentation. The battle
continued with the successful, weeklong siege of Fort
Lévis. The English pressed
on to accept the capitulation
of Montreal.
For more than a decade,
the annual Founder’s Day
Weekend has honored the
shared history of Canada
and the United States. Here,
where the Oswegatchie
River flows into the St.
Lawrence, the Fort La
Présentation Association
plans to rebuild the historic
fort as a high quality tourist
attraction.

Take Tour Of Singer Castle Relax And Enjoy Some
HAMMOND - Take in some
classic Northern New York history and beauty with a visit to
Singer Castle on Dark Island
on the St. Lawrence River.
Singer Castle is, according to
its official website, www.singercastle.com, the only castle on
the river to be completed, fullyfurnished and resided in during the heyday of the “great
builders” and industrials in
New York. The castle remained
in the possession of the original
Bourne family from its construction in 1905 until the mid1960s.
Frederick G. Bourne was a
self-made millionaire. The
Bourne family had a 1,000-acre
summer estate in Oakdale,
Long Island. But he wanted to
surprise his wife, Emma, and
their children with an island
hunting retreat.
Mr. Bourne bought Dark
Island and designed and built
the castle, originally known as
"The Towers,” for $500,000.
Tons of granite quarried from
nearby Oak Island were
brought over ice and water
from 1902 to 1904 to construct
the castle. Italian stonecutters
were hired to shape the granite
for the four-story, 28-room castle, four-story tower, and a elaborate boathouse which housed
a workshop and powerhouse
and one of Bourne's steampowered vessels.
More than 2,000 loads of topsoil were brought from Canada
to cover the eight acres of rock.
Singer Castle is open daily
until Labor Day. It is also open
Saturdays and Sundays from
Labor Day until Oct. 9.
A visit to the castle features
guided tours. Tours are $14 for
adults, $11 for seniors and $6
for children ages 4 to 12.
Children under 4 years of
age must be carried by adults.
No strollers are allowed within
the castle.
Canadian rates are available.

County Offers Seven State Campgrounds
Whether your idea of camping is pulling the RV into a
space with modern amenity
hook-ups, or roughing it with
a tent and nature, St.
Lawrence County offers something for everyone. Get away
from it all or make an active
visit filled with festivals, fun
and attractions.
St. Lawrence County has
seven state-operated campgrounds: Cedar Island State
Park, Chippewa Bay; Coles
Creek, Waddington; Cranberry
Lake State Campground; Eel
Weir State Park, Ogdensburg;
Higley Flow State Park, South
Colton; Jacques Cartier State
Park, Morristown; and Robert
Moses State Park, Massena.

boating, fishing and beautiful

are lightly wooded, with a dayuse area and picnic pavilion
nearby.
Coles Creek includes both
wooded and open campsites,
as well as a beach on Lake St.

playground, playing fields and
a large pavilion. A marina is
located at the mouth of the
creek, just north of the park.
The Cranberry Lake area is
one of the largest remote
areas remaining in the state.
The park is adjacent to
150,000 acres of forest preserve and includes many miles
of marked trails and ponds.
Activities available at Cranberry Lake include hiking,
swimming and camping, with
many of the campsites having
trees between them for some
added privacy.
Eel Weir State Park is
located along the banks of the
Oswegatchie River just two
miles from Black Lake. Both
the Oswegatchie and Black
Lake are known for excellent
bass fishing and are ideal for
canoes or row boats. Eel Weir
is a small, secluded park ideal
for those looking to get away
from it all. The park includes
a picnic area and pavilion.
Higley Flow is nestled

are separated by pine trees.
The park is hilly and heavily
wooded, with a beach on the
reservoir of the river.
Jacques Cartier State Park,
Morristown, hosts a sandy
beach and boater’s docks on
the St. Lawrence River. The
park’s biggest draws are its
boating opportunities and
excellent fishing. Its large
open lawns encourage games
and picnics. A playground and
shaded picnic area are also
located nearby.

Merrickville: On The Rideau River
Merrickville-recognized by
historians as Canada’s best preserved and restored 19th Century Village-is right at your
doorstep, situated on the winding Rideau River, just 45 minutes south of Ottawa. Come discover a way of life that has long
since gone by the wayside, but
not forgotten. Come take a
leisurely stroll back in time
down the streets of Merrickville.
Coined “The Jewel of the
Rideau” Merrickville is a village
which really does have something for everyone. No matter
your taste, no matter your budget-no matter your interests,
Merrickville has it all, from a
warm, romantic atmosphere for
two, to an intriguing family destination spot where quality
time really takes on its true
meaning. Settled in the 1700’s
by William Merrick, a millright
and United Empire Loyalist,
this intriguing village is a his-
tory buff ’s dream come true.
Merrickville is home to the oldest operating foundry in
Canada. Village Metalsmiths
Outlet & Gift shop has been in
operation since 1840.
The beautiful Rideau Canal
was named on UNESCO's
(United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage list, joining ranks with other landmark
sites such as the Great Barrier
Reef, the Grand Canyon and
the Canadian Rocky Mountain
Park.
The Canal is one of the oldest
canals dating back to the early
19th century that is still operational with most of its structures intact.
For the Artistic, this quaint
village is home to over 30 resident professionals; working
from studios, displaying in their
galleries, and selling their originals. You’ll be amazed at the talents of renowned painters,

CANTON - For most of his
fishing life, nationally known
local anger Don Meissner
dismissed carp as big but
uninteresting creatures that
cruised through the waters of
the St. Lawrence River until the day he accidentally
hooked one and "I suddenly
found my boat being towed
by this giant fish."
His respect for the species,
and for catch-and-release
carp fishing, was made permanent during last summer's St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament, a FISHCAP and St.
Lawrence County Chamber
of Commerce event.
"I have never been so
amazed and affected by any
one sport, than during those
three days engaging with
and observing this tournament."
Meissner, longtime host of
PBS's Streamside fishing
series, is currently coordinator of the county FISHCAP
program.
He speaks of the excitement of the young anglers,
the camaraderie among the
contestants, the intricacies of
carp fishing, and the professionalism of the event as a
total package that completely won him over.
"Carp fishing is really an
ultimate sport," Meissner
notes. "There's real science to
it - from knowing about the
fish, to the special baits, to
the special equipment."
A bait "sling shot," specific
to carp fishing, shoots bait
into the water and looks easy
enough - but isn't, Meissner
discovered. "It was pretty
comical when I tried it," he
admits.
The Best Fishing
But he comes back to being
so impressed by the passion
of the young carp anglers at
the tournament.
"There is something about
the possibility of battling a
huge fish that can excite
anyone, at any age. And
while the kids I spoke with
at the tournament all said
they enjoyed going after all
the other species in our
North Country waters,
almost to a youngster they
said they enjoyed carp fishing the most."
"It's the battle," Meissner
reports. "The excitement of
catching a monster, a huge
