This collection features elegant
fabrics, sleek designer hardware,
and TruePleat design. TruePleat
offset pleat construction is shown
above in the elegant Park Avenue
fabric.
Beautiful Fabric Styles
The Manhattan Collection offers
eight distinct fabric styles and two
levels of light control for your
customers. It includes six semiopaque fabrics and two opaque
fabrics which block 99% of
sunlight for complete privacy.
• Tribeca. This semi-opaque
fabric is available in a delightful
assortment of 20 cosmopolitan
colors, ranging from white to
teal. A non-woven fabric, Tribeca
offers your customers an attractive entry-level price point to
premium Manhattan features.
• Chelsea. Three tasteful patterns
in a semi-opaque fabric –
Pinpoint (contemporary dot
print), Rattan (natural wicker
pattern), and Tweed (classic
texture). The color palette for
this fabric is neutral and refined.
• Soho. An intriguing semi-opaque
fabric with the appearance of
textured linen. Available in an
extensive range of subtle natural
tones, from white and cream to
soft tan and warm brown.
DU-4
• Gramercy Park. A beautiful
semi-opaque woven fabric with
the look and feel of raw silk.
Offered in a fresh selection of
soft pastels and neutrals that
are suitable for any decor.
• Park Avenue. In smooth, silky
woven fabric, Park Avenue is a
sophisticated semi-opaque fabric
that filters light. Color choices
include a broad range of warm
pastel tones.
• Tribeca Eclipse. In soft opaque
colors, non-woven Tribeca
Eclipse blocks 99% of outside
light, offering maximum protection from harmful UV rays.
• Park Avenue Eclipse. Similar to
Tribeca Eclipse, but in a woven
fabric. An opaque fabric has
never been more beautiful.
• Washington Square. Our newest
fabric, with a bold 1" pleat size,
comes in a striking selection of
prints. A non-woven semiopaque fabric, Washington
Square is a beautiful addition to
The Manhattan Collection.

of The Manhattan Collection is its
streamlined hardware. The lowprofile headrail and bottom rail
offer outstanding performance
while enhancing the appearance
of the shade.

HIGH-FASHION FABRICS
Our Originals Collection offers
more fabrics, pleat sizes, cell configurations, light control options,
colors, and design options than
any other honeycomb brand.
Shown above is an example of the
remarkable versatility of The
Originals Collection.
Choice of Light Control
Whether your customers want
complete privacy or sunlight
filtered through a beautiful sheer
fabric, you’ll find fabric options
ideally suited to their light control
needs. Choose from four distinct
degrees of privacy and light
shading … from sheer to semisheer, semi-opaque to opaque.
Colors, Textures and Prints
Pale pastels. Sumptuous jewel
tones. Dark, dramatic colors. And
there’s texture, too, in the warm
look of linen in our semi-sheer,
and the delicate lace of our sheer
fabric. Or opt for the drama of
prints, the refined patterns of
swirled marble. Or the warm,
inviting look of our beautiful
soft-hand fabric, LinenSoft.
Versatility and Variety
• 3/8" and 3/4" Commercial. These
semi-opaque flame resistant
fabrics meet stringent fire
codes, making them ideal for
commercial applications.
• 3/8" and 3/4" Opaque.
This shade blocks 99% of
outside light, helps protect
against harmful UV rays, and
is extremely energy efficient.
• Double and Triple Honeycomb.
Layers of honeycomb pleats help
these fabrics set the standard for
energy efficiency and depth of
color. These double and triple
honeycomb fabrics are offered
in a beautiful selection of
popular hues, including 12 in

Effective date 6/1/99
Shade specifications such as
size standards and mounting
requirements help to determine
which applications best fit your
customers’ needs. Specifications
can vary significantly among
different pleat sizes and fabrics.
Detailed specifications for each
shade application are included
on the specifications pages for
The Manhattan Collection and
The Originals Collection. For your
quick reference, specifications
summaries for each of the two
collections are included in their
respective sections of this Duette
honeycomb shades guide, on
pages DU-26 and DU-53. The
summaries show manual shade
size maximums. When using the
summaries, be sure to refer to
footnotes as appropriate.
The specifications summaries also
provide information about which
fabrics can be used for which
applications. “N/A” on the charts
means that a fabric is “not available” for a particular application.
Motorization Options
In addition to Duette PowerRise,
Duette EasyRise, Manhattan
Skyrise, Duette Skyrise, and
Duette Vertiglide are available as
motorized designs. For specifications and surcharges for all motorization options, see pages DU-73
through DU-89.

MEASURING GUIDELINES
Accurate measurements are essential. The dimensions supplied on
the order form must be correct for
the shade to properly fit the window opening.
Measuring for Outside Mounts
DUETTE®
HONEYCOMB SHADES
Rectangular Shades
Rectangular shades include:
• Standard Rectangular
• Duette with UltraGlide
• Top-Down
• Top-Down/Bottom-Up
• Duette Duolite
• Two-On-One Headrail
• Manhattan EasyRise
• Duette EasyRise
• Duette Easy Glide
• Duette with PowerRise
Measuring procedures are the
same for each of these types of
rectangular shades. While our
specialty hardware systems –
Duette Simplicity, Duette Skyrise,
Duette Vertiglide, and Duette
Smart Shade – can also be
considered rectangular, their
measuring procedures differ
slightly and will be discussed
separately.
Inside Mount or Outside Mount
Outside
Mount
(OB)
Measure the desired width and
height. To minimize light leakage,
it’s recommended that the shade
overlap the window opening at
least 2" on each side and at the
bottom.
When measuring the height, take
into account the requirements for
mounting bracket attachment.
“Rounding” Your Measurements
Dimensions on the order form
should be accurate to within 1⁄ 8".
With inside mounts, always
round down to the nearest 1⁄ 8".
For example, 3⁄16" rounds to 1⁄ 8".
Rounding up could result in a
shade that is too wide to fit
within the window opening.
Outside Mount
Measuring for Inside Mounts
Arches and Circles
Measure the width inside the
window opening at the top,
middle and bottom. Measure the
height inside the window opening
at the left, right and center.
Included in this category are
Duette EasyView, arch, circle and
quarter circle. The basic rules for
measuring rectangular shades
apply to arches and circles, as well.
How you take your measurements
will vary depending upon
whether the shade fits within the
window opening (inside mount
or IB) or overlaps the window
opening (outside mount or OB).

Order the narrowest width
measurement and the shortest
height measurement. Remember
to always round your measurements down to the nearest 1⁄8".
Be sure the window opening
is deep enough to install the
mounting bracket.
For inside mounts, measure the
exact width and height inside the
window opening. For outside
mounts, measure the desired
width and height. Always measure
the height at its tallest point.

Templates Required
Whether an arch is perfect or
imperfect, a template for each
shade must be sent with the
order. Templates are also required
with angles and specialty shades.
Guidelines for preparing templates
are shown within the General
Information section. Be sure to
cut-out all templates.
Angles
With angles, either the top or
bottom of the shade is sloped,
or angled. All four sides must be
measured to ensure accurate
fabrication. Measure the inside
of the window opening for inside
mounts. When measuring for outside mounts, remember to add the
desired amount of overlap.
In the following diagram, the
vertical measurements are labeled
“LH” for left height and “RH” for
right height. The horizontal
measurements are labeled “S” for
slope and “W” for width. The
“slope angle” is the angle between
the slope and a horizontal line.
Effective date 6/1/99
With specialty shapes, one or more
sides of the shade are angled.
Specialty shapes include hexagons, octagons and trapezoids.
The procedures for measuring
hexagons and octagons are similar
to those for rectangular shades.
Simply measure the window
height and width appropriately
for an inside or outside mount.
Be sure to measure the width at
the shade’s widest point.

When measuring for trapezoids,
measure the window height, the
top and bottom widths, and the
length of the sloped side(s). Then
measure what the width reduction
of the shorter rail will be on each
side. The maximum reduction is
9" per side.
The procedures for measuring
window openings for Duette
Simplicity are identical to those
for standard rectangular shades.
For inside mounts, measure the
width and height at three locations inside the window opening.
Order the narrowest width and
the shortest height. For outside
mounts, measure the desired
height and width allowing for an
appropriate amount of overlap.
DU-9
DUETTE®
HONEYCOMB SHADES
With perfect arches and circles,
the height will either equal the
width (circle and quarter circle)
or equal one-half the width (arch).
With imperfect arches, these
simple height/width relationships
do not occur.
TEMPLATE
REQUIRED
In the diagrams shown below, “H”
is the vertical height, “TW” and
“BW” are the top and bottom
widths, “LS” and “RS” are the
lengths of the left and right sloped
sides, and “LR” and “RR” are the
left and right width reductions
of the shorter rail. Record all
measurements on your template.
Use the widest width measurement when pricing the shade.

MEASURING GUIDELINES
The inside mounting depth
requirements are different from
standard rectangular shades,
however, because of the side rails
which are used with the shade.
For fully recessed flush mounting,
111⁄16" is required for 3⁄8" pleat sizes
and 2 1⁄2" for 1⁄2", 3⁄4", Double and
Triple Honeycomb fabrics. For
bracket attachment, 1" is needed
for 3⁄8" pleat sizes, and 11⁄8" for the
other fabrics.
Outside mounting surface requirements are the same as those for
standard rectangular shades.
Duette Skyrise
With the Duette Skyrise hardware
system, the measuring procedures
for outside mounts are the same
as for rectangular shades.
With inside-mounted shades,
measure the width and height
inside of the window opening in
at least three locations each, as
before. If the window opening is
longer than 96", the width should
be measured every 48". Order the
shortest height and the narrowest
width.
For fully recessed inside mounts,
a 2" minimum mounting depth of
the window opening is required.
Non-flush mounted inside mounts
are not recommended; but, if
necessary, a Skyrise shade may
protrude up to 1⁄2". Note that
mounting depths must take into
account any obstacles to shade
movement, such as window
cranks or handles.
Outside mounts require only a 1⁄2"
flat surface for bracket attachment.
In addition to shade measurements, the angle of the window
should also be noted on the
order form.

Duette Vertiglide
For inside mounts, the width at
the top of the opening is critical.
Measure the top width and measure the height at the left, right
and center of the opening.
Outside mounts are built to the
exact ordered width and height.
Allow 3" to 6" overlap on each
side, and at least 3⁄4" of floor
clearance on the bottom.
Duette Smart Shade
Except with certain greenhouse
window applications, Duette
Smart Shades are only installed
as inside mounts. Follow the same
measuring procedures as for standard rectangular shades. Measure
the exact inside dimensions in
three locations and specify the
narrowest width. Measure the
height from the bottom sill to
the top.
For greenhouse windows, additional measurements are required.
These include:
• The width of the glazing bars.
• The depth of the glazing bars.
• The narrowest clearance
between the inside edge of
the main glazing bars and
cross-dash members or other
obstructions.

Width
For fully recessed flush mounting,
3 1⁄4" is required. For bracket
attachment, a minimum of 1" is
required (using the plastic installation bracket).
In addition to the measurements,
the model and manufacturer of
the greenhouse should be noted,
if possible.

Our newest lifting system, Duette
with UltraGlide, has its own
installation bracket. For added
clearance, the bracket can be
used with standard Duette spacer
blocks or extension brackets.
Mounting Brackets for
Easy-Lifting Systems
Manhattan EasyRise uses either
standard installation brackets or
Manhattan swivel brackets. The
two Duette easy-lifting systems
require different mounting bracket
styles. One bracket is used for all
Duette EasyRise shades, and a
similar smaller bracket is used for
3

Additional Clearance
On outside mount installations,
spacer blocks or extension
brackets can be used with most
mounting brackets to allow a
shade to clear obstructions, such
as a window crank or handle.
Each spacer block adds 1⁄2" of
clearance, and a maximum of
three per bracket can be used.
Extension brackets add up to
3" of clearance.

CHILD SAFETY
Cord Tensioner
To reduce the potential hazards
of the cord loops on our easylifting systems, Hunter Douglas
developed the first cord tensioner.
When installed as directed, the
cord tensioner eliminates loose,
free-hanging cord loops by
keeping the loop taut under
Easy Installation
The cord tensioner is designed for
easy installation inside or outside
the window opening using one of
several mounting options.
Grommets. Grommets can be
used to directly mount the cord
tensioner inside the window
casement. The grommets fit into
each side of the circular opening
on the tensioner. A screw through
the grommets secures the cord
tensioner to the mounting surface.
Standard Tensioner Bracket.
The standard tensioner bracket
can be used with either insideor outside-mounted shades.
The bracket is mounted at an
appropriate height so that when
the cord tensioner is attached,
the spring inside the unit is
placed under the correct amount
of tension.
Extended Tensioner Bracket. The
extended tensioner bracket is used
with inside mounts only, when it
is necessary to extend the cord
tensioner out from the window
opening to provide easier access
to the cord loop.
Cord
Tensioner
Retrofit Kit
A cord tensioner retrofit kit is
available to allow consumers to
equip existing cord loop products
with the cord tensioner. The kit
includes everything necessary to
assemble and mount the cord
tensioner (available in white only).
CARE AND
MAINTENANCE
Durability is a hallmark of
Hunter Douglas honeycomb
shades. The strong, anti-static
fabrics resist dust and dirt, and so
require little cleaning and maintenance. Regular dusting with a
feather duster is all that’s necessary in most circumstances. For
a more thorough cleaning, the
fabric can be lightly vacuumed
with a brush attachment.

Standard
Tensioner
Bracket
When needed, most fabrics can be
cleaned by gently blotting with a
soft, damp cloth or sponge. See
the cautions below for exceptions.
Use lukewarm water and a mild
detergent. Do not apply too much
pressure to the fabric. Excessive
pressure could cause “pilling” (the
formation of small balls of fabric).
Take special care when cleaning
opaque fabrics to avoid creasing
and pilling.

HONEYCOMB SHADES
The importance of child safety
cannot be overemphasized. Loose
cords on any window treatment
should always be secured to
protect children and pets. For
specifics, please refer to the Child

rear side of the fabric, the pleats

weight of the shade may tend to

Sleek Hardware
To complement the elegant look

shade applications feature sleek,
low-profile top and bottom rails

The featured application in The

cord slightly to the side. And it
raises when the customer pulls
the cord with a gentle motion.
Cord length on this unique system

the shade is fully raised, fully

There are never any dangling
cords to detract from the shade’s
appearance. Plus, operation is the

honeycomb shade.

Color Coordination
Duette with UltraGlide is a lifting system unlike any
other. A revolutionary manual system, it uses a unique
spring-loaded mechanism to operate the shade.
When the cord is moved to a slight angle, the shade
gently lowers itself. This movement of the cord is like
pressing a switch – spring tension is released in a
slow, controlled manner and the bottom rail floats
down. To stop the lowering at any point, simply
move the cord to the opposite angle. Control is very
precise … and very easy.
To raise the shade, simply pull on the cord in a gentle
pumping action. Each time you pull, the cord retracts
to its preset length. And because the cord length
always remains the same, there are never any long,
dangling cords to detract from the appearance of the
shade. Child safety is enhanced, as well.
The Duette with UltraGlide headrail is available in
six fashionable colors designed to coordinate with the
wide range of fabric colors and prints offered with
this new lifting system. Fabric color numbers and
names are listed for each of the six coordinating
headrail colors.
Four Applications
Duette with UltraGlide is available in all Manhattan
Collection fabrics in four versatile applications:
standard rectangular; top-down; top-down/bottomup; and two-on-one headrail. It is priced using a
width-based surcharge similar to Manhattan EasyRise.
Additional surcharges are added for the specialty
rectangular applications.

Manhattan EasyRise is the only fully color-coordinated
easy-lifting system on the market. Housed within
a sleek headrail for a unique streamlined look,
Manhattan EasyRise is ideal for larger shades. When
the cord loop is pulled, a clutch assembly rotates a
drive shaft, which turns a roller bar to wind and
unwind the lift cords, raising or lowering the shade.
This design makes it easy to operate shades up to

The Simplicity hardware system covers rectangular
window openings up to 60" in width and height.
The shade is operated manually, using a handle. The
fabric can be specified to stack at the top, bottom or
either side. Simplicity will operate on any slope in
any orientation. This makes it an excellent choice for
skylight applications. An extension pole that extends
up to 116" is available to operate shades in difficultto-reach locations.
Sloped or flat shades over 36" wide require a support
cord to prevent the fabric from sagging. On shades
over 42" wide, a rail stiffener is attached to the back
of the moving rail to prevent bowing. The ends of the
headrail, moving rail and anchor rail are enclosed by
side tracks.

Definition of Terms
R-values measure resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more insulation the product provides.
Summer Shading Coefficient measures the amount of heat passing through a covered window versus a bare win-
dow. The lower the number, the less heat is transferred. In summer, less heat transfer means a cooler room.
% UV Blockage measures the product’s effectiveness in preventing harmful ultraviolet rays from entering the
home’s interior. The higher the percentage, the more UV rays are blocked.
Sound Absorption measures the amount of sound absorbed by the shade. The higher the number, the better the
sound absorption.

THE ORIGINALS COLLECTION™
The collection with the “most”!
customers can actually have two
opacities in one shade!
• The most choices of colors, textures, and prints.
Application Choices
• The most choices of pleat sizes and cell configurations.
• The most choices of translucencies, from sheer to opaque.
• The most choices of energy efficiencies.
• The most popular shade now in millions of homes has
the most proven performance and reliability.
REMEMBER WHEN …
Back in 1985, when the original
Duette honeycomb shade was
introduced, the product line
consisted of the 3⁄8" Semi-Opaque
fabric in 12 colors, with one
application (standard rectangular)
from which to choose.
How times have changed! The
Originals Collection from Duette
now offers your customers more
choices than they could imagine.
And this broad product offering
helps them choose shades that
enhance their decor and lifestyle.
Colors and Textures
From pale pastels to striking jewel
tones. From gentle whites to dark,
dramatic colors. No other collection has such variety of color.
Textures add even more choice.
From the warm look of linen in
our semi-sheer and the delicate
lace of our sheer fabric to the
warm, inviting look of our beautiful soft-hand fabric, LinenSoft.
Pleat Sizes and
Cell Configurations
The Most Chosen Shades
Our energy efficient and easy to
maintain honeycomb fabrics are
available in a variety of pleat sizes
and cell configurations. Choose
the quiet look of the crisp 3⁄8" pleat
or the striking appearance of the
3
⁄4" pleat. Or for richer color and
increased energy efficiency, choose
one of our Double or Triple
Honeycomb fabrics.
Shades made from fabrics in
The Originals Collection are the
honeycomb shades chosen most
frequently. And it’s no mystery
why. For performance, reliability,
quality, and selection, can you
imagine a better honeycomb
shade collection anywhere?
Translucency and Light Control
Some customers may want a darkened room when their shades are
closed. Others will prefer bright
sunlight filtered through a sheer
fabric. For all your customers,
The Originals Collection has the
translucency and light control
options to meet their needs. There
are four distinct degrees of privacy
and light control from which to
choose: sheer, semi-sheer, semiopaque, and opaque.

Duette Duolite shades fit rectangular window
openings up to 72" wide by 96" high. Two fabric
panels are used – one between the headrail and
center rail, and one between the center rail and
bottom rail. Both the center rail and bottom rail are
moving rails, each with their own set of lift cords.
Either fabric panel, or portion of a fabric panel, may
be used to cover the window.
With Duette Duolite, your customer has the choice
of two window coverings for the same window.
Typically, sheer or semi-sheer fabric is used for the
top panel, and opaque or semi-opaque fabric is used
for the bottom panel. Double or Triple Honeycomb
fabrics may also be used in combination with a 3⁄4"

Hunter Douglas makes it easy
to cover large rectangular window
openings. Our innovative easylifting systems – Duette Easy
Glide and Duette EasyRise, along
with Manhattan EasyRise (see
page DU-33) – offer simple,
convenient operation. Their
continuous cord loop and clutch
assembly work together to make it
easy to raise and lower shades up
to 150 square feet in area.
Duette Easy Glide
Available in widths up to 132",
Duette Easy Glide is designed for
use with 3⁄8" honeycomb fabrics
only. When the cord loop is
pulled, a clutch assembly rotates a
drive shaft, which turns a roller
bar to wind and unwind the lift
cords, raising or lowering the
shade. It is available only in a
manual system.
Duette EasyRise
The popular Duette EasyRise is
also available in widths up to
174". Instead of lift cords, Duette
EasyRise uses special lift tapes that
wind and unwind as the shade is
raised and lowered. Along with
manual systems, motorized
options may be ordered.
All fabrics in The Originals
Collection are available with the
Duette EasyRise system, including
the 3⁄8" pleat size. However, unless
the shade is wider than 132" or a
motorized option is desired, 3⁄8"
honeycomb fabrics are generally
used with the Duette Easy Glide
system.

Duette arches and circles are available up to 84"
wide. Both “perfect” and “imperfect” arches are available. An arch is perfect if its height is exactly one-half
its width.
Stationary arches and quarter circles may share the
same headrail with standard rectangular, top-down,
top-down/bottom-up, and Duette Duolite shades. If
the shade assembly is inside mounted, specialty end
mount brackets are used. If the shade is outside
mounted, specialty wall mount brackets are required.

The Simplicity hardware system covers rectangular
window openings up to 60" in width and height. The
shade is operated manually, using a handle. The
fabric can be specified to stack at the top, bottom or
either side. Simplicity will operate on any slope in
any orientation. This makes it an excellent choice for
skylight applications. An extension pole that extends
up to 116" is available to operate shades in difficultto-reach locations.
Sloped or flat shades over 36" wide require a support
cord to prevent the fabric from sagging. On shades
over 42" wide, a rail stiffener is attached to the back
of the moving rail to prevent bowing. The ends of the
headrail, moving rail and anchor rail are enclosed by
side tracks.

Duette Vertiglide covers rectangular window and door openings up
to 14 feet wide and 8 feet high.
Duette Vertiglide shades open and
close from side to side, and are
most often used to cover sliding
glass doors and French doors.
In addition to manual operation,
switch-control and remote-control
motorized options are available
(see pages DU-88 to DU-89).
There are four possible configurations of Duette Vertiglide: left
stack, right stack, center opening
(sometimes called “split draw”),
and center stack.
In a left stack design, the left
vertical rail is stationary and the
right vertical rail is moving – the
fabric stacks left and draws right.
In a right stack design, the right
vertical rail is stationary and the
shade draws left. Center opening
designs have two stationary and
two moving vertical rails; the
fabric stacks both left and right,
and draws toward the middle. In
a center stack design, two moving
vertical rails are used; the fabric
stacks anywhere along the top rail
and draws in either direction.
A Duette Vertiglide Duolite configuration is also available. This is
basically a center opening design
with a different fabric on each
side, each of which can span the
full width of the shade. Colors
and opacities can be combined
to add fashion and function to
the window or door opening.

New this year is an easy-to-use
timer, a satellite battery pack, and
even an AC power option.
• Award-winning Duette with PowerRise is an affordable
battery operated remote control system.
• Raise and lower the shade at the touch of a button using
the sleek hand-held remote control.
• Switch control and remote control AC powered motorization
options are also available for a variety of applications.
SIMPLICITY IS KEY
One of the most striking features
of Duette with PowerRise is its
simplicity. Your customers will
find it easy to install, operate and
maintain. And it’s an easy shade
for you to sell. There’s never been
a better opportunity to sell Hunter
Douglas motorized shades.
Affordable Battery Operated
Remote Control System
Eight standard alkaline batteries
provide all the power that’s
needed to operate the shade.
With normal use, the batteries
will last for a year and a half or
more. Plus, it’s quick and easy to
replace them when necessary.
In addition, the Duette PowerRise
approach to motorization results
in substantial cost savings, making
it a very affordable system. Your
customers can purchase a Duette
PowerRise shade for only slightly
more than the cost of one of our
standard Duette shades! This
pricing adds to the tremendous
appeal of this unique system, and
significantly increases your market
for motorization.
Unlimited Applications
Duette with PowerRise can
enhance the decor and function
of practically any room in a home.
The applications –and the possibilities – are unlimited.
Additionally, there are many
practical reasons for choosing
Duette PowerRise. For example,
access to cords can be blocked by
furnishings. That’s not a problem
with Duette PowerRise. The ease
of remote control is also a solution
for operating shades in most high
windows or foyers. The hand-held
Available Fabrics Increased
Now, award-winning Duette with
PowerRise is offered in all fabrics

Other Motorization Options

PowerRise, switch control and
remote control AC powered
shades are available the popular
Duette EasyRise, Manhattan
Skyrise, Duette Skyrise, and
Duette Vertiglide applications.
These “hard-wired” options can
be the right choice for customers
who need specialized motorized
systems, or systems for larger
window or door openings.

OTHER MOTORIZATION OPTIONS
• Easy to install, operate, and maintain. Easy to sell, too!
remote control can operate shades
up to 30 feet away!
Aesthetic considerations are also
important. Cords can detract from
the beauty of the shade, especially
when two or three windows are
stacked. The innovative design of
Duette with PowerRise eliminates
the need for cords.

Ordering Information
Ordering Duette with PowerRise is similar to ordering
a manual shade. However, there are a few important
differences:
• Infrared Eye Placement. You must specify right or
left infrared eye placement. Indicate eye placement
even if you are ordering a satellite eye. Placement
cannot be changed after the shade is fabricated.
• Remote Control. Generally, one remote control per
room is recommended. Additional remote controls
can be ordered at any time.
• Satellite Eye. Order if the headrail will be covered
by a top treatment. Optional satellite eye wire
lengths can be ordered for high or stacked windows
to ensure proper shade operation.
• Satellite Battery Pack and AC Transformer. Order the
satellite battery pack if easier access to the
batteries is desired. Order the AC transformer if the
customer wants to eliminate the need for batteries.
• PowerRise Timer. If the customer wants to automate
shade opening and closing with a wide variety of
programming options, order the optional PowerRise
timer.
• Channel 2 Operation. Order if channel 2 is desired for
independent operation of adjacent or stacked
shades. Channel operation cannot be changed after
the shade is fabricated. See page DU-82 for details.

ORDERING CHECKLIST
Use the checklist below to be sure you consider
all the important factors when ordering Duette
with PowerRise shades.
✔
Is the shade within size specifications for the
fabric ordered?
✔
Will adjacent shades require alternate left and
right infrared eye placement to be sure the
eyes are more than 48" apart for reliable
independent operation using a single channel?
✔
Is channel 2 desired to ensure independent
operation of adjacent or stacked shades?
✔
Is more than one remote control required for
shades in different rooms or on different floors?
✔
Will a top treatment cover the headrail,
requiring a satellite eye?
✔
Is a satellite battery pack needed to make
changing the batteries easier?
✔
Is the AC transformer desired to eliminate the
need for batteries?
✔
Will the PowerRise timer add convenience and
function for the customer?
✔
With outside mounts, are spacer blocks
needed for added clearance?

Safety Stop
Built-In Battery Wand
Duette PowerRise has a built-in
Safety Stop. When the shade
touches an object in its path,
it stops moving. Remind your
customer to be sure the shade
will clear any obstructions, such
as window cranks or handles,
when it is installed.
Shades up to 26" wide use eight
AAA batteries in the short battery
wand, while shades over 26" wide
use eight AA batteries in the long
battery wand. To replace either
size of battery:
• Lift the cover rail until it clicks
into its open position to access
the battery wand.
• Press on the clip at the motor
end of the battery wand to
release the wand from the
brackets. Remove the wand
from the headrail.
• To replace the battery wand,
depress the spring and snap the
wand back into its brackets.
Depress the spring and snap the battery
wand back into its brackets.
• To close the cover rail, grasp the
rail gently and close firmly.
Satellite Battery Pack
Built-in Safety Stop
Satellite Eye
If the infrared eye on the headrail
will be covered by a top treatment
or cornice, your customers can
order the optional satellite eye. It
can be positioned a short distance
from the headrail for easy, reliable
operation.
Press on the clip to remove the battery wand.
• Follow the instructions on the
battery wand label to remove
the wand cap and replace the
old batteries. Since one bad battery can shorten the life of the
rest, be sure to replace all eight
batteries. Make sure the new
alkaline batteries are correctly
aligned, matching the illustration on the label.
The optional satellite battery pack
makes it easier to change the
batteries, especially if the shade is
installed in a difficult to access
window. The satellite battery pack
can be mounted in a convenient
location up to eight feet away
from the headrail – for example,
next to molding or under the sill.
The satellite battery pack connects
to the same side of the headrail
where the infrared eye is located.
To replace the eight AA batteries,
push in the circular latch at the
wire end of the battery pack and
lift up the cover. Install eight new
alkaline batteries as shown inside
the battery pack. Then replace the
cover, snapping it securely closed.

Long Battery Life
With normal use, the batteries
that power Duette PowerRise
shades will last a year and a half
or more. When they finally begin
to lose power and the shade starts
to operate slowly, replace the
batteries. Don’t wait until they
completely lose power and shade
movement stops. Replacement
procedures are similar for the
built-in battery wand and for the
optional satellite battery pack.

Versatile Programming
To entirely eliminate batteries,
Duette with PowerRise is now
available with an optional AC
transformer. The transformer
plugs into a standard wall outlet
and connects to the shade using
a 16' wire.
The timer can be programmed to
operate shades four times a day
on each of the two PowerRise
channels. For example, the timer
can be set to raise shades in the
morning, close them in the hot
afternoon hours, raise them again
in the early evening, and close
them when it gets dark.
The timer can be programmed for
different times on different days,
or it can be programmed the same
for all days. Your customers can
also choose to program the shade
one way for weekdays and another
for weekends. There’s even a
“holiday” program that operates
the shades randomly when the
owners are on vacation to simulate
the home being occupied.
Wall or Tabletop Mounting
The AC transformer eliminates the need for
batteries and connects directly from the wall
outlet to the shade.
The attractive timer, which also
serves as a clock, can be mounted
to a wall or it can be placed on a
tabletop, mantle or shelf. Brackets
and a stand are provided.
In addition to its programming
capabilities, the PowerRise timer
includes three manual buttons on
its face: on/off; open; and close.
When shades are manually
opened and closed using the
timer, all shades in the room –
whether channel 1 or channel 2 –
are operated.
Distance Between
Infrared Eyes
When adjacent Duette PowerRise
shades are operated using the
hand-held remote control, the
distance between infrared eyes is
important to avoid unintentional
activation of one shade by the
remote control signal intended for
another shade. For independent
shade operation, the recommended minimum distance between
infrared eyes is 48".
To achieve this minimum distance,
shades may be ordered with the
infrared eyes placed at opposite
ends of adjacent headrails, as
shown in the illustration below.
PowerRise™ Timer
The optional timer now available
with Duette PowerRise shades is
very versatile in its usage. The
timer has eight LED’s to send
infrared signals in a 180° radius to
operate shades. This means that, if
placed on one wall of a room, it
can activate shades on the other
three walls.
DISTANCE BETWEEN INFRARED EYES
RECOMMENDED:
The PowerRise™
timer is a very
versatile option,
with features that
add convenience
and function.
ACCEPTABLE:
NOT RECOMMENDED:
MORE THAN 48"
MORE THAN 48"
LESS THAN 48"
As a general rule, the infrared eyes on adjacent shades should be
positioned as far apart as possible for independent operation of
each shade using a single channel. The minimum separation for
independent single-channel operation is 48".

Two-Channel Operation
Two channels are available to
operate Duette with PowerRise
shades. Normally, channel 1 is the
only channel needed. However,
there may be special circumstances with adjacent or stacked
shades when channel 2 operation
is desired for independent control
of each shade.
When the 48" separation between
infrared eyes is not possible,
two-channel operation can be
ordered for independent shade
operation. Some shades can be
set to respond only to the channel
1 signal from the remote control,
and others can be set to respond
only to channel 2. A switch at the
top of the remote control is used
to change from one channel to
the other.
Two-channel operation is
recommended with stacked
shades, banks of shades, and
shades in bay windows. Twochannel operation is rarely
essential. It’s usually a matter
of customer preference.
Duette with PowerRise shades are
factory set for channel 1 operation. Shades must be specified for
channel 2 operation at the time
they are ordered.

Complete installation instructions
are included with each Duette
PowerRise shade. The following
overview will help you discuss
basic installation considerations
with your customers.
Bracket spacing is the same for
each mounting style. The two end
brackets are positioned so that
their outside edges will be 4"
from the ends of the headrail.
Space any additional brackets
evenly between the end brackets.
AC Transformer Installation
With outside mounts, the installation brackets are attached to the
wall or molding outside the window casing. A flat vertical surface
at least 3⁄4" high is required. The
brackets must be mounted level
and aligned at the same height.
Connect the wire from the transformer to the motor circuit board
according to the instructions
supplied with the shade. Hold the
headrail high enough so that the
bottom rail will not hit the floor
when the shade is lowered, and
test for proper operation.
OUTSIDE MOUNT
MINIMUM MOUNTING
SURFACE HEIGHT

Mounting Styles
There are three basic mounting
styles: inside mount, outside
mount, and ceiling mount.
Inside Mount
With inside mounts, installation
brackets are attached to the soffit
inside the window casing. Bracket
attachment requires a minimum
depth of 5⁄8", as shown below.
Spacer blocks can be used with
outside mounts to project the
installation bracket away from
the mounting surface to avoid
obstructions to shade movement.
Each spacer block adds 1⁄2" clearance. A maximum of three blocks
may be used to gain a total of 11⁄2".
4"
5/8"
MINIMUM
MOUNTING
DEPTH
To fully recess the shade, the
window casing must be at least 2"
deep for 3⁄8" and 1⁄2" pleat sizes, or
2 3⁄8" for all other fabrics. Add to
these minimum depths any extra
clearance needed to avoid obstructions to shade movement, such as
window cranks or handles.
Ceiling Mount
Brackets can be mounted to the
ceiling in a similar manner. With
both inside mounts and ceiling
mounts, be sure the mounting
surface is level and the front edges
of the brackets are aligned.
Effective date 6/1/99
Install the shade into the
mounting brackets by tipping the
headrail forward to fit its back
bottom edge into the lower lip of
each bracket. Then rotate the
headrail upward until it snaps into
the locking tab on all the brackets.

shade groups: one two-shade order, and one fiveshade order. Notice that the power supply, shades and
remote receiver all connect to the control unit, which
is the “brain” of the system. If an optional master wall
switch is ordered, it too is connected to the control
unit. Each control unit has its own power supply.
When installed, the remote receiver should be visible
throughout the room and shielded from direct
sunlight or direct light sources such as halogen or

VERTIGLIDE MOTORIZED SYSTEMS
Duette Vertiglide shades are available with either
switch-control or remote-control motorization
options. The basic surcharges for motorized shades
are priced as kits for up to 10 shades for switchcontrol operation and 12 shades for remote-control
operation. A kit includes the power supply(s) and
other required electrical components.
The 8-amp power supply can operate up to two
shades. If more than two shades are ordered in a
group, two or more power supplies will be included
in the Accessory/Installation Kit.
Maximum wiring requirements must not be exceeded.
In addition, motorized shades in different rooms or
on different floors will usually require separate kits.
To calculate the total suggested retail price of the
shade order, first find the price of the manual Duette
Vertiglide shade using price charts 5A and 5B on
page DU-51. Then add the appropriate motorization
surcharges.
