WHEN Bjorn Borg plays the Liverpool
International Tennis Tournament this June
it will be 30 years since he defeated Vitas

to grace Wimbledon. Then, the men’s game
was about speed around the court and not
just serving and volleying. We won’t see

our 800th birthday year.
Top sport produces great business
opportunities and this year the Chamber
of Commerce will host around 600 guests
on the opening day of the Aintree Grand
National Festival. This is the 10th year we
have offered our members this facility and if
you are interested in joining us, you’ll have
to hurry and call Sue Platt at the Chamber
for details. I guarantee a fantastic day out
and a unique networking opportunity.

As I write this, the Grand National is only
weeks away and before then Liverpool
will twice face Barcelona in an intriguing
European Champions tie.
New stadia are planned both for Everton
and Liverpool and the impressive
Liverpool Arena opens up all sorts of
possibilities for future sporting events.
Last year’s fantastic Open Golf at Royal
Liverpool is still fresh in the mind and
preparations are well underway for the
tournament’s return to Royal Birkdale
in July, 2008. Add the world beating
achievements of gymnast Beth Tweddle
and the all-conquering St Helens Rugby
League team and no other area of the
country can hold a candle to Merseyside
as a venue for top class sport.
On a marginally less exalted sporting level,
the Chamber’s Annual Golf Day is scheduled
to take place at Caldy Golf Club on May 24
and if you are interested in entering a team
or donating a few prizes, call Terry Dunne at
the Chamber.

Liveone 20 – smart access to city life
LIVERPOOL is a city which has long
been recognised for its energy, its
innovation and its residents’ love of life.
Soon Chamber members will have the
chance to sample another Liverpool first,
a unique new scheme bringing together
the very best of the city’s lifestyle all
wrapped up in a convenient smartcard.
LiveOne20 has been designed by marketleading smartcard company, Livesmart,
in partnership with the Chamber. The
card allows Chamber member companies
to reward staff with a really exciting
product at minimal cost.
The card is the most advanced of its kind
ever launched in Britain and uses the
same cutting edge technology as similar
projects in Las Vegas, New York and
Hong Kong.
It means Chamber members can get the
most out of their leisure time, enjoying
a range of exclusive offers and savings
of about £800 a year on eating out,
shopping, health and beauty, sport and
much more.
Richard Dutton, Livesmart’s chief
executive, explained more about the
idea behind the scheme. “We have been
talking to the Chamber about developing
a smartcard specifically suited to
members and their employees.
“We took the name from European
regulations stating that employees should
work a maximum of 48 hours a week.
That leaves 120 hours free time for taking
it easy, perhaps going out for a meal,
see a show or even do a little shopping.
Together with the Chamber, we wanted a
card which was easy-to-use, offered great
value for money and, most importantly,
was able to reflect the very individual way
people live their lives.”
A comprehensive network of scheme
partners has been developed among
some of Liverpool’s premier names in
leisure, entertainment and retail. They
include many of the city’s leading hotels,
restaurants, health clubs, hair and beauty
salons and cinemas with more big names
already lining up to take part.
Each card has a unique chip which is
smart enough to know which offers and
entitlements are available at any given
time – deals which will save cardholders
up to £200 per quarter. Cardholders
can also find out about all the great
savings and discounts by logging onto
the LiveOne20 cardholder website
(www.liveone20.com).
Livesmart’s commercial director, Carl
Speight, said the card was “the most
advanced and smartest way to bring a
red carpet touch to everyone’s experience
of life in Liverpool”. He added: “This is
the result of a lot of discussion with the
Chamber and its members about what
matters to them.
“We believe we have created something
which gets them on Liverpool’s inside
track at the click of a mouse. It’s incredibly
convenient and will make their leisure
time – and money – go much further than
before. The more people use their cards,
the more discounts they’ll be entitled to
and, therefore, the more they’ll save. This
is entirely about shaping the best of the city
around the people who live and work here.”
The LiveOne20 card is being made
available to all of the Chamber’s 1,600
member organisations with a potential
reach of more than 100,000 employees.
Liverpool Chamber chief executive,
Jack Stopforth, said the LiveOne20 card
represented a great way for employers to
reward their greatest assets – their staff.
“This is another example of this city’s
creativity coming to the fore. This is a
unique project and a wonderful tool to
motivate and retain employees. It allows
us to tap into the cultural and commercial
resources which Liverpool has in order to
offer wonderful added value.
“As well making the card available to
personnel with its broad initial offer,
bosses can load on additional benefits,
such as meals or theatre tickets, by way of
a reward. Cardholders will also be able to
treat themselves to these extra offers.”
In addition to visiting the LiveOne20
website, any member companies requiring
further details about the scheme can
contact Livesmart’s account manager
Daniel White by phone (0870 055 3472) or
e-mail ([email protected]).

Chamber’s responsible lead
BULK pharmaceutical manufacturer
Eli Lilly has been presented with a
Responsible Business Award for its work
on odour reduction at their Speke plant.
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce
supported the new award category at the
Groundwork Environmental Awards.
The Chamber is leading on developing
a responsible business agenda which
enables companies to manage a wide
range of social, environmental and
economic impacts and also to realise a
wide range commercial opportunities.
Liverpool Chamber member Eli Lilly
was praised for its work as a responsible
neighbour to its community, involving
local people in a project to reduce
fermentation odours from the plant,
which is sited in a mixed residential and
industrial area.
Some £5 million was invested into
the plant to reduce its impact on
residents. Julie Stanley, the company’s
community liaison officer, explained:
“Initially we asked twenty local
residents to keep an odour diary over
several months for two consecutive
years so that we could get an idea of
odour generally in the locality.
“We have worked with local people every
step of the way. We set up a community
liaison panel made up of a range of
residents and local community groups
including the Environment Agency
and invited them on site and explained
the odour reduction programme and
how it would benefit them. The figures
speak for themselves, in 2000 we had
88 complaints and in the last three
years we haven’t had one attributed
to our fermentation processes.”
“All businesses regardless of their size
and sector manage some aspect of their
wider impacts,” says Maresa Molloy, head
L-R Kevin Griffiths, the Chamber’s
director of commercial services, Julie
Stanley, community liaison associate,
Terry Brown, process operator and
olfactometry consultant, and Guy
Gainey, fermentation shift leader
of policy and information at Liverpool
Chamber of Commerce.
“This new category in the awards received
the most entrants which shows that
business are keen to demonstrate that they
are working in this way. The awards are as
much about how businesses have grasped
an opportunity as well as avoided risk.
The work of the winning company will be
inspiring to other businesses.”
Runners-up were Knowsley-based
Colourmatrix, plastic products
manufacturers for their widening
out their work on Corporate social
responsibility and their work on resource
efficiency and energy saving.
LIVERPOOL Chamber is keen to
respond to the needs of members, so
we’re modernising the way that we
work and will be making changes
to the way that we market the
Chamber’s services. As part of this
programme of improvements, the
chamber has launched an electronic
newsletter.
Designed to compliment the Liverpool
Chamber magazine, the e-newsletter
aims to bring up-to the minute
business news and views and enables
subscribers to give their feedback to
the day’s business issues, affecting
businesses in the area.
Jenny Stewart, the Chamber’s head
of membership said: “We’ve already
had an excellent response from our
members and interest in the stories
covered from the Chinese New Year
Awards dinner to top tips on winning
tenders.
“We’re now rolling out this news
service to to all of the city’s business
community so that they can benefit
from this service.”

Smart meters improve energy performance for business
THE vast majority of organisations
are working in the dark when it comes
to gathering accurate management
information on their electricity
consumption – wreaking havoc with
forecasting, budgeting, bill payment
and the identification of waste.
But new Smart Metering technology
available from Chamber Utilities™ is
now offering these organisations a low
cost solution – giving them access to
consumption readings taken every
30 minutes, 24/7. This information is
downloaded via mobile technology to
provide actual consumption information
for the supplier to accurately invoice
against. The data can also be accessed
in user friendly graphical and tabular
formats by the company to show half
hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly
or annual patterns of usage.
Says Jeff Wealands, technical director for
Utility Auditing Ltd (UAL), which supplies
the Chamber Utilities™ service: “Electricity
is now one of the most costly business
overheads and it is vital that businesses have
access to detailed and timely management
information to help profile consumption.
This can be used for a variety of purposes,
including cost control and forecasting, waste
minimisation and bill validation.
“This level of detailed information
has previously only been available to
half-hourly metered customers. Smart
meters open up this resource to smaller
businesses, who often work on estimated
bills and infrequent meter readings.
Using this sophisticated soft ware we are
helping companies to monitor and reduce
their energy consumption – usually
resulting in double digit savings.”
Smart metering is an essential tool in
improving energy efficiency. Monitoring
consumption in minute detail businesses
can identify precisely when and where
the waste is occurring and put measures
in place to address the problems. In
addition, an alert function is available
to advise the company of any significant
increase in consumption so that waste
can be tackled instantly.
The meters can be installed at low cost
in various parts of a building, enabling
zonal monitoring. This can help with
energy efficiency monitoring, but is also
useful in apportioning costs to various
departments.
By using accurate data, companies can
also make significant energy procurement
savings as electricity suppliers don’t need
to guard against estimated consumption
or load factors and can provide a more
competitive price.

Foreign exchange without a bank
ONCE the exclusive domain of the
banks, foreign exchange for small to
medium size businesses (SMEs) is a
fast growing niche market dominated
by a handful of specialist firms that are
developing a share of this global market
worth billions of pounds a year.
Despite the growth in the number of
specialist foreign exchange providers
available to business, DTI research shows
that 600 to 800K SMEs pay no attention
to the risks associated with international
payments.
The leading specialist foreign exchange
(FX) companies on the market are pretty
much a new phenomenon in the world
of international trade, most being only a
generation in the making.
They tend to be 100 per cent focused
on foreign exchange, and comply with
international regulatory authorities to a
‘T’ because all they do is foreign exchange.
Foreign exchange is the biggest business
in the world with the big banks
speculating on close to a trillion pounds
every single day.
The largest specialty foreign exchange
firms like Custom House and Travelex
move billions of pounds around the
world annually, but these are real
transactions as opposed to the speculative
leverage that dominates the interbank
foreign exchange market.
These companies have global treasury
operations and offer advantages to
companies that are major exporters to
Europe, Asia, the United States and other
world markets. They handle billions of
euros, pounds and dollars which they
need to exchange. In turn, companies
elsewhere in the world that import from
America, for example, need those dollars
to pay their bills.
As UK businesses increasingly go global,
they’re frequently dealing in multiple
currencies. And the success of any venture
can often rest on getting the most favourable
foreign exchange transaction rate.
As experts, they know that when it comes
to foreign exchange, speed, timing and
efficiency are the keys to success.
Good FX specialty providers are trusted
by business leaders and Fortune 500
companies because they can provide
secure, award-winning foreign exchange
services globally.
The best of them enable clients to transact
billions of pounds annually, on-line and
through their international networks of
trading offices.
“The large banks are very good at
providing foreign exchange to the large
corporations that need to exchange
millions of dollars, but when it comes to
mid-size or small corporations then they
are more challenged.”

Birthday treat for business on-line
A virtual trading platform has been
launched which could generate millions
for the merseyside economy over the
next decade.
08 businessconnect – the free-to-join
Capital of Culture business forum – has
marked its first birthday with a new way
to generate business via the web.
The Trading Floor is an opportunity
for the forum’s two thousand plus
members to buy and sell their services,
plus view and post tenders online at
www.08businessconnect.com
Almost £50,000 worth of business has
already been posted on the site, from
companies such as the Parr St Hotel
‘’It is a major advert for
the skills and services
that exist in the city –
and one which should
help fuel greater
economic activity
within the region”
and Enterprise Liverpool, and the figure
is expected to double within the next
month.
Requirements posted range from a
supplier to reproduce CDs, provision of
outdoor entertainment at Tarporley’s
carnival and a mobile Stainless
Steel fabricated stand to support
equipment to be used in the Food and
Pharmaceutical Industries.
08businessconnect was launched in
2006 with the aim of ensuring European
Capital of Culture status provides
maximum opportunities for Merseyside
businesses to grow. Today it is one
of the UK’s fastest growing business
associations - with a membership of 2,756
employing more than 90,000 people in
Merseyside alone.
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader
of Liverpool City Council, said: ‘’The
Trading Floor is the ideal birthday
present from 08 businessconnect – it’s
free, could generate millions and sustain
thousands of jobs. We need innovations
like this to stimulate our economy and
promote that the local solution can be the
best solution.
‘’It is a major advert for the skills and
services that exist in the city – and one
which should help fuel greater economic
activity within the region. As news of
this free service spreads, I expect more
businesses to join and help cement an
economic legacy well beyond 2008.’’
As well as regular email news bulletins,
members can benefit from regular
networking events such as business
breakfasts and talks by cultural figures
and captains of industry. A fund has also
been established for businesses seeking to
commission work by Merseyside artists.
Members to date include major employers
from Jaguar, Unisys and the city’s
universities to small cultural companies
such as the Unity Theatre, the Bluecoat
Arts Centre and Almiro Gallery.
Jason Harborow, chief executive of
Liverpool Culture Company, said:
‘’The Trading Floor is a significant
breakthrough in raising awareness of
what business needs can be met on our
own doorstep. It will help tackle the
issue of retaining millions of pounds
within the Mersey economy. Much
has been achieved in the first year of 08
businessconnect and what is exciting so
much more is possible.’’

ACAS – keeping you informed
Work and Families Act 2006
The Work and Families Act 2006 is
the first step towards delivery of
some of the measures set out in
the Government response to the
consultation, “Work and Families:
Choice and Flexibility”, which
was published in October 2005.
It aims to establish a
balanced package of rights
and responsibilities for both
employers and employees in line
with the Government’s better
regulation agenda. The Work
and Families legislation will:
• Extend maternity and adoption
pay from six months to nine
months from April 2007
• Extend the right to request
flexible working to carers of
adults from April 2007.
Definition of carer will be an
employee who is or expects to
be caring for an adult who:
- is married to, or the partner or
civil partner of the employee; or
- is a near relative of
the employee; or
- falls into neither category but
lives at the same address
as the employee.
The ‘near relative’ definition
includes parents, parent-inlaw, adult child, adopted adult
child, siblings, uncles, aunts or
grandparents and step relatives.
• Introduce “Keeping in Touch”
(KIT) Days to help employers and
employees benefit from improved
communication during maternity
leave from April 2007
• Employees returning early from
maternity or adoption leave will
have to give employers 8 weeks
notice from April 2007
The Work and Families
Act 2006 also:
Provides an enabling power
to extend the statutory
entitlement of four weeks leave
to 5.6 weeks. Consultation has
been taking place on these
changes and results should be
published in the New Year.
Aims to give fathers a new right
to 26 weeks paternity leave, if
the mother returns to work. This
will be introduced alongside
the extension to maternity and
adoption pay to 12 months by
the end of the parliament.

training programme 2007 and
will be scheduling more of these
throughout the course of the year.
Our training programme covers

help employers understand,
interpret and keep up-to-date
with employment law and best
practice and we are continuing

On-site training
cuts waste
FREE on-site training to raise
awareness of construction waste – and
provide tips on how to tackle it – is
now available to North West based
building companies employing 50
people or less.
Resource
efficiency
programme
Envirowise is appealing for businesses
to get in touch to book a place on the
Small Builder Campaign, which is
taking place across the region between
now and the end of April 2007.
Eligible companies will be offered
two 20 to 30 minute training sessions,
delivered on-site at a convenient time
such as during a lunch or tea break on
separate days.
The talks aim to raise awareness of the
key sector issues, as well as identify real
actions that can be taken to start cutting
down on waste. Topics will include:
• The benefits of waste minimisation
• Efficient material handling
• Segregation, re-use and recycling of
waste
• Relevant legislation and where to
source further information
Envirowise regional manager for the
North West, Nick Ward, said: “We
would encourage all small builders in
the North West to consider booking a
session with our training provider and
make a pledge to become more resource
efficient in 2007. All participants will
receive a personal environmental
awareness certificate which they can
keep and use as evidence of their
commitment to resource efficiency
when they bid for new work with clients
or as a sub contractor.
“It is estimated that the region’s 17,000
construction businesses could be
throwing away as much as 13 per cent
of their building materials completely
unused every year. But by taking steps
to reduce waste and identify ways to
re-use and recycle more materials,
companies could find they make
valuable cost savings - as well as lower
their overall environmental impact.”
To register, companies should call
training co-ordinator Chris Sowerby
at Halcrow on 0113 220 8468 or email
[email protected]

Environment
Name and shame energy laws
could slash property values
CONTROVERSIAL plans to name
and shame commercial buildings that
are not energy efficient could slash the
value and saleability of thousands of
properties in Liverpool.
The European Union Energy Performance
of Buildings Directive, which aims to cut
carbon emissions in line with the Kyoto
Protocol, means commercial buildings
will be given an energy performance
rating, similar to those for washing
machines and fridge freezers.
The new rules come into force on 1
June 2007 when owners of commercial
buildings of more than 1,000 sq m,
including office blocks, shopping
centres and hotels, will have to make
Energy Performance Certificates
(EPCs) available to prospective
buyers, tenants and investors.
80 per cent of commercial buildings in the
North West are expected to be affected by
the scheme in the next 10 years.
Kevin Engel, director of assurance and
advisory services at the Liverpool office of
PKF accountants and business advisers,
says the new rules will add clarity to
property deals, but fears they will make
older, less efficient properties undesirable
as investment options.
“EPCs are set to increase transparency
in deals to sell, rent or build commercial
property. Relationships between buyer
and seller, and landlord and tenant will
involve new areas of negotiations, with
the prospect of tenants negotiating
reduced rentals if they learn their
building is a poor energy performer.
“Many organisations won’t want
to occupy a poorly rated building,
particularly those with a vested interest in
being viewed as socially responsible.”
Engel says the new rules will also
make investment in commercial
property through pensions funds
and Real Estate Investment Trusts
(REITs) more transparent.
“Investors in commercial buildings
owned by pension and life funds will
be able to request details of the energy
rating of properties and may choose their
investments accordingly.
“Commercial buildings with good
energy performance are likely to be at
a competitive advantage when it comes
to attracting investors, while owners of
inefficient buildings could struggle to get
funding.”
Mark Evans, director of northwest
property company, MDA, says the
big fear for landlords is that energy
certificates will shorten the lifespan of
less energy efficient buildings: “Landlords
will be forced to find the cash to
make improvements and protect their
investments or risk missing out altogether
on a market which is growing ever more
aware of green issues.
“Canny property owners will be
preparing to cash in on a new breed of
tenant that is willing to pay more in rent
or buying costs for efficiently designed
and constructed buildings because of the
of the energy savings they can make.”
Roger White, director of Cheshire
architects, Randle White, says the value of
an energy efficient building can outweigh
the cost of refurbishment:
“More sustainable and efficient design
offers an enormous opportunity for
cutting energy wastage, carbon emissions
and costs.
“Spiraling fuel costs have pushed energy
efficiency up the business agenda. Energy
certificates will underpin growth in
demand for low energy offices and will
act as a huge incentive to the commercial
sector to improve the energy efficiency of
its buildings.
“Increasing energy performance through
renewable energy systems such as
photovoltaics, ground
soruce heat pumps and
wind generators will
become key targets for
businesses.”
Paper cut creates significant cost savings
WE are currently using the world’s
resources far faster than they can
be renewed – in the UK alone we are
already consuming three planet’s worth
of natural resources.
Paper is something that is frequently
squandered by businesses – but by
reducing the amount wasted, companies
can achieve significant cost savings
and help the planet at the same time.
Envirowise recommends trying the
following:
• Set your printer to print on both
sides of the paper by default. It will
automatically reduce the amount of
paper you use and thus your paper
budget.
• Consider setting aside one business
printer for draft documents only – and
load it with scrap paper
• Use 80g sheets rather than thicker paper
and avoid printing on ‘flash’ paper
unless you really have to. The thicker
the paper you use the more you waste.
• Reduce unwanted post by returning
junk mail to sender
For expert advice on reducing paper,
businesses can call 0800 585 794 or visit
www.envirowise.gov.uk

Waste not want not at DPD
THE Merseyside Joint Waste DPD is
being prepared jointly across the subregion by Merseyside Environmental
Advisory Service on behalf of all the
Councils of Merseyside and will comply
with the requirements of legislation and
national guidance.
The joint working is intended to
recognise that planning for sustainable
waste management is a matter which
requires a strategic approach as it crosses
district boundaries and will culminate
in the adoption of sustainable land use
planning policy framework for sustainable
management of all waste streams across
Merseyside. This will also involve the
identification of a number of strategic sites
across Merseyside that will be suitable for
development as waste facilities.
The Waste DPD takes particular
account of the Government’s key
planning objectives for sustainable waste
management:
• communities taking responsibility for
their own waste
• enabling sufficient and timely provision
of waste management facilities to meet
the needs of their communities;
• enabling waste to be disposed of in one
of the nearest appropriate installations.
The business community of Merseyside
produces significant quantities of waste
that requires appropriate treatment
and disposal. The total annual quantity
of commercial and industrial waste
produced in Merseyside is in excess of
1.4 million tonnes and costing up to
£70 million to treat and/or dispose of
the waste. The business sector is a key
stakeholder in the development plan
process and their views are greatly
valued. Understanding the views of
commerce and industry at this early stage
is vital as the outcome of the process will
have implications for businesses across
Merseyside for the next 20 years.
The next phase in the Waste DPD
process is to consider the main
issues and options related to waste
management in Merseyside. The
consultation on Issues and Options is
expected to commence in March 2007
leading to the production of Preferred
Options later in the year.
Waste DPD proposed event:
A stakeholder event has been arranged
to target the business community of
Merseyside. The event will take place
on the morning of 19th March 2007,
commencing at 10.00 at the Peter Jost
Conference Centre.
If you are interested in attending this event
then please confirm you name and address
to: Waste DPD Team, c/o Merseyside
Environmental Advisory Service, Bryant
House, Liverpool Road North, Maghull,
Merseyside L31 2PA. Please note that this
event will be limited to 70 people.
MERSEYSIDE commuters now have a
new and easy way to get to work thanks
to the launch of a new car share network.
The network, at www.merseycarshare.org
allows people to log their details
on, where they are travelling to and
from, and whether they are offering a
lift or seeking a lift, and appropriate
matches are then sent in a secure email.
Registration is completely free.
The Mersey Car Share Network is
organised by TravelWise Merseyside,
the campaign run by the Merseyside
Local Transport Plan Partnership,
consisting of Merseytravel and the five
local authorities, to help people to make
smarter travel choices.
The TravelWise programme includes
workplace travel plans, public transport
information and marketing, car share
and car clubs, school travel plans, and
walking and cycling promotions.
The free scheme will help businesses to
reduce parking needs, allow workers
to cut their petrol costs, and help to
reduce congestion and improve the
environment which is vitally important
in light of the recent Stern report on
climate change.
Sian Van Oosten and John Rule are
both eager advocates of car sharing.
Sian works at The Riverside Group and
John works at Littlewoods Shop Direct
Group. They both travel every day from
Waterloo in Sian’s car to the Estuary

While Nigel’s company had the right

Bjorn again success for Liverpool International
BJORN Borg is to play on grass
in England for the first time since
famously losing to John McEnroe in the
men’s 1981 final at Wimbledon.
The five times Wimbledon champion is to
play at the 2007 Liverpool International
Tennis Tournament in his first playing
appearance in the UK for almost a decade
– and his only matches in the UK this year.
Organisers Northern Vision are
delighted the Swedish legend has chosen
the annual tournament at Calderstone’s
Park to dust off his grass court shoes.
Anders Borg, tournament director, said:
“It is fantastic for the tournament and
for tennis fans everywhere that Bjorn
has agreed to play. He hasn’t played in
the UK for over 10 years, but had heard
of our unique format of ATP, WTA and
legends and was intrigued to see for
himself. To have him at Calderstones is a
major coup for Liverpool and a testament
to how the event has grown.
To be held from June 12 to 17, the
Liverpool International is now in its
sixth year and, outside Wimbledon,
boasts more tennis matches than any
other British tournament.
Anders added: “We hope to see once
again some of Borg’s tennis genius and
sparkle on centre court at Liverpool.”
Bjorn, who recently received a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the 2006 BBC Sports
Personality Awards, will be gracing centre
court for his first match on Wednesday,
June 13. He will play doubles with the
ever-entertaining Mansour Bahrami and
Pete McNamara, who have been crowd
favourites at Liverpool for the last three
years. Borg will be in Liverpool for three
days and on Ladies Day (Friday 15th June)
he will play his only singles match.

Past faces light up historic Liverpool exhibition
THE Long Way Home, an exhibition
by celebrated photographer Bernard
Fallon, is on display at the National
Conservation Centre from 3 March
until 15 July 2007. National Museums
Liverpool would like to find the five
cheeky characters that feature in the
exhibition’s lead image.
The photograph was taken in 1969 and
shows five young boys standing on the
riverside of Scotland Road in Liverpool.
If you recognise the faces in the
picture please contact Angela Samata on
[email protected].
The Long Way Home is made up of 60
atmospheric black and white images
taken between 1966 and 1974. They
feature everyday Liverpool scenes, many
of which Fallon took on his daily journey
home from Liverpool to Crosby.
The evocative images document ordinary
life in Liverpool with extraordinary detail.
They not only capture its people going
about their daily business in a variety of
locations but they also depict domestic
scenes with children at home and play.
Bernard Fallon said: “I took these pictures
as an amateur in the true sense of the
word… I loved the sensation of events and
scenes materialising in the view finder.”
The introduction to the exhibition
has been written by Wirral’s Cultural
Ambassador Mike McCartney who is
also a keen photographer. He says:” The
underlying importance of Liverpool
becoming the centre of the universe is…
its people. Bernard Fallon has not only
captured the essence of Liverpool’s people
in the sixties, he has also brought the
bricks and mortar back to life, restoring
so many memories of an era which
became so significant in my life.”
Bernard Fallon will give a gallery talk on
Saturday 3rd March at 1pm at the National
Conservation Centre, Whitechapel.

Australia fair
LIVERPOOL Chamber is leading a
high level rade delegation to Australia
in March 2007 – with 16 companies
participating in the event. Eleven of
these companies are in the aerospace
sector and will be visiting the Australian
International Airshow/Exhibition.
This aerospace event is one of the Asia
Pacific’s most prestigious aviation,
aerospace and defence exhibitions. The
UK has its own pavilion where British
companies will display their expertise
in this sector. Over 500 companies
from over 22 nations will be exhibiting
and almost 30 official trade delegations
including this one organised by Liverpool
Chamber of Commerce will join this
high profi le event.
Networking receptions – conferences and
one to one meetings with potential clients
and contacts are also part of participating
in a UK Trade and Investment trade
delegation.
There will also be access for the
delegates to meet with high level defence
industry delegations as there is a Air
Chiefs’ Conference hosted by the Royal
Australian Air Force which attracts
senior military leaders and defence
officials from around the world.
Also included in this event are five
other SME companies who are taking
advantage of this UKTI market visit to
research the market for the first time and
have received support from LCCI and the
British Consulate so to explore the market
potential. These companies looking to
explore the opportunities in Australia
and are in the biotech, petrochemical
industry and jewellery sectors.
Alison Fisher, head of international trade –
who will be leading this delegation, stated:
“We are so pleased with the response and
interest we have had from companies. In
fact this is a national programme but out
of the 16 companies participating indeed
11 of them are from the North West of
England. We have been promoting the
Australia market to NW companies for
many years and this the best number we
ever had participating. This UKTI market
visit programme is an excellent scheme
for companies to explore a market for the
first time – there is so much support given
to the companies from LCCI and their
individual international trade advisor so
to prepare them for entry to the market.”
Chinese leader
honoured by
ChinaLink Award
THE Chamber’s flagship international
event and awards – ChinaLink Business
Awards Dinner – has had its reputation
further enhanced by one of its award
recipients this year.
The award panel this year has
unanimously nominated Xu Kuangdi,
ex-Mayor of Shanghai, as the recipient of
the ChinaLink Outstanding Achievement
Award. David Tinsley, chair of the Award
Panel, said the award to Mr. Xu was: “In
acknowledgement of his personal effort
in the development and establishment
of the Liverpool–Shanghai sister city
relationship and contribution to the UKChina business co-operation.”
The sister city relationship was formally
established when Mr. Xu and Mike
Storey CBE, ex-Leader of the Liverpool
City Council, signed the MOU in
Shanghai on 18 October 1999. Dr.
Kegang Wu, director of ChinaLink and
the Chamber’s international business
division, was instrumental in facilitating
the successful twinning in 1999 and
has been a driving force for many
initiatives between the two cities in the
last eight years. He said: “Since 1999 the
co-operation between Liverpool and

areas such as civic, sport, culture, trade
and investment, and education. Much
was achieved when Shanghai was under
Mr. Xu’s leadership, who held the post
of Mayor of Shanghai for six years.
Although he moved on to a new central
government position, the Liverpool
– Shanghai relationship has developed
from strength to strength.”
Professor Xu is currently the vice
chairman of Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and
the president of the Chinese Academy of
Engineering.
In his acceptance Professor Xu said: “It
is a great honour for me to receive this
award. Although I have left Shanghai
and taken up new posts, my keen interest
for the better and stronger relations
between Liverpool and Shanghai remains
unchanged. I will, as I have always
had, try my very best to promote this

Visionary company takes software
technology into another dimension
A young, visionary Merseyside
company is successfully transferring
the benefits of highly-realistic
interactive 3D software technology,
first seen in the computer games
industry, to business, education
and training.
Lateral Visions is building up an
impressive portfolio of work for clients
including Shell, ICDC, the Linnean
Society of London, and universities
including Bath and Liverpool. The
company develops its own interactive
3D technology and in recent years has
won the Merseyside Innovation Award
and the Mersey Partnership Inward
Investment Award.
“In most 3D projects, such as movies
of new buildings, you are just a passive
observer. With our interactive 3D
technology you have the ability to
explore and interact”, explains Dr Carl
Gavin, managing director of Lateral
Visions, “and the virtual experience is
enriched by integrating text, sound,
video or any other digital content into
the 3D world.”
Lateral Visions has also developed
simulation technology that has been
utilised in driving simulations for
North Wales Police and Arrive
Alive, as well as multiple schools,
colleges and universities as part of
automotive engineering courses.
Indeed, a real race car has been built
after testing done in Lateral Visions
virtual environment.
The company was the impetus
behind the recent ‘Streets of Culture’
project, working with St Margaret’s
High School, Hope University and
Jaguar Cars to encourage social
enterprise in local students by
creating a racing game set
in Liverpool in 2008, with
proceeds going to BBC

JOBCENTRE Plus is contacting
hundreds of local businesses this
month to tell them about Work Trials
– a scheme that lets them try out a
potential employee, free of charge, for
up to 15 days before deciding whether
to make them a job offer.
“A Work Trial is a test period in a real
job, and an ideal way to fill a vacancy
with minimum risk”, explained Jenny
Owens, employer engagement manager
for Jobcentre Plus in Liverpool & Wirral.
“During the Work Trial the employee
stays on benefits, so there’s no cost
to the employer. They get the chance
to show their enthusiasm and skills,
and the employer gets time to decide
whether the person can do the job and
fit in with their company. There’s no
obligation on either side, so employers
really have nothing to lose.”
Most job vacancies can be offered on a
Work Trial basis, and most unemployed
people are eligible to apply for one,

Olympic challenge for Chamber member
FOR someone who is used to challenges,
Liverpool Chamber member Mark
Eccleston’s latest project ranks with the
very best. Mark has been asked by the
British Tennis Foundation to work with
three players who are currently in the
process of trying to qualify for the 2008
Beijing paralympics.
Mark said: “I am fully aware of what is
required to achieve qualification and that is
why I have been given the responsibility of
trying to get these three players to Beijing.
I feel it a very interesting and unique
situation because if all three do qualify it
will be the first time one centre and one
coach would have achieved this goal.”
Mark’s history is that in 1986 , aged 16, he
was involved in an accident in which he
severed his spinal cord and as a result he
is now a full time wheelchair user. Despite
this he became involved in wheelchair
sports and has represented Great Britain in
two Paralympics at two different sports.
He was captain of the Great Britain
Wheelchair Rugby team up until and
including the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics.
After Atlanta he took up Wheelchair Tennis
and has now won seven National titles, two
World Championships and a silver medal
at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. However
his proudest achievement is that he was the
first British player, at any level to be number
one on the world rankings. He retired from
competing after Athens and started his
coaching qualification.
In January 2006 he became the first person
with his disability to qualify as a tennis
coach. He is also involved in motivational
speaking. He is also part of the Sporting
Champions scheme which is a Sport
England initiative in which world class
athletes visit schools talking about the
positives sport can have on peoples lives.

Common Ground make perfect poetry
COMMON Ground Sign Dance Theatre is
delighted to announce its new direction,
in addition to its status as a registered
charity, the company is moving towards
becoming a social enterprise.
Common Ground, is a unique
contemporary dance company based in
Liverpool, Capital of Culture ’08, which
aims to assist people of all backgrounds
in the realisation of professional dance
works. They use dance as a vehicle to
motivate deaf people and provide a
bridge between the deaf and hearing
communities. Its legacy is to generate
a sense of personal and community
ownership whilst contributing to
the creative drive in the UK and
internationally.
The current intention is to strengthen the
business and financial aspects, moving
toward the social enterprise model rather
than that of a charity in order to create a
legacy of lasting social change.
Now for the first time in five years
Common Ground is taking to the road,
touring a triple bill of shows: Breaker
(2005); Men and Demons (2005); Places
that Pass (2006). The blend of cultures and
languages; deaf and hearing, sign language
and spoken English give the company’s
work its unique and exciting flavour.
Denise Armstrong, artistic director said,
through her sign language interpreter:
“The company is strong and solid and we
are all looking forward to entertaining
audiences and sharing our work with
them. The three works we are touring each
have their own identity and dynamic and
will appeal to all audiences.” Anybody
interested in dance should take this
opportunity to enjoy what the Guardian
described as “Poetry of the Body!”

Agent celebrate success
TURNING down business has been
a smart move for recently formed
marketing agency, Agent Marketing.
The company was set up with funding
from the New Entrepreneur Scholarship
programme. Director Jayne Moore
decided to set up her own business after
being ill for a year. After this life changing
experience she decided to create the type
of ethical and responsible business that
she’d always wanted to work for.
Jayne formed the company with
fellow directors Paul Corcoran and
Wayne Malcolm. They have recently
been awarded a Celebrating Success
award by local business support
agency, Business Link, John Moores
University and 08 Connect to recognise
the rapid growth of the business in
its first 12 months of trading.
The company is certain that their
responsible business stance is winning
them clients, Jayne said: “We turned away
one client who we weren’t comfortable
working with but that move has gained us
several new clients. Our clients appreciate
the fact that all of our marketing
recommendations are based on evidence
rather than what we think is best. To
cope with this, we’ve recently moved to
new, larger premises in the uber-cool
Parr Street Studios and recruited our first
member of staff who is a JMU masters in
marketing graduate. We will be recruiting
again from the universities in the next
few months – we want the talent to stay in
Liverpool after all.”
Agent Marketing is one of the first
marketing consultancies outside
of London to be working towards a
CarbonNeutral status and as a result
have been short listed for a Ground
Work Trust award and a sustainable
cities award in London for their
responsible business practices.
JAB Design – saving lives and winning awards
JAB Design has been shortlisted in one
of the world’s most prestigious annual

design and attract entries from design
consultancies from across the UK and
abroad. The first stage of the judging
process has now been completed and
the panel selected the MOB Guardian
project to be short listed in the
Industrial Product Design category.
Jonathan Butters, MD at JAB Design,
said: “It’s great to have the quality of our
work acknowledged in this way, especially
on such a fantastic and worthwhile
product. We got a tremendous buzz
from working with the Royal National
Lifeboats Institution and with fishermen,
who are the primary intended end users
for this system.
“We had to tackle a whole host of
complex, technical issues, to ensure
the system was robust in the harsh
environment at sea, whilst at the same
time ensuring that the product felt
comfortable, reassuring and intuitive for
use in highly stressful, life threatening
situations. Best of all, this product has the
potential to save many lives every year, by
ensuring the RNLI know when a problem
has occurred and can find out where the
vessel is quickly.”
The MOB Guardian has already received
significant recognition from the
industry, winning the Safety category
in both the Seawork 2006 Innovations
Awards and the 2006 Fishing News
Awards. The RNLI project team said:
“We came with a challenging design
requirement to work with a team
involved in the rapid development of
specialised electronics equipment.
Th is equipment also required specific
ergonomic study to design and effective
user interface. We have been delighted
with the creative approach of JAB Design
in developing the product.”
The Design Week Award winners will be
announced at the awards ceremony and
dinner which is being held at the Hilton
in London. Several of JAB Design’s team
will be going to the event to celebrate and
hopefully return with the trophy.

Record growth for Beatles Story
THE Beatles Story visitor attraction,
based at the Albert Dock in Liverpool,
has reported a major growth in
business and the creation of new jobs in
Merseyside during 2006.
The multi-award winning experience,
which charts the success of Liverpool’s
Fab Four, welcomed over 200,000
visitors in 2006, an increase of over 17%
compared to 2005. This rise in visitors has
also resulted in a 14% growth in staff at
the attraction.
Established in 1990, the world’s only
Beatles-themed visitor attraction allows
you to re-live the Beatles’ meteoric rise
to fame - in the City where it all began.
The Living History Tour takes visitors
on a personal tour from 50’s Liverpool to
Hamburg and the Cavern Club, through
the hysteria of Beatlemania and flower
power.
The Beatles Story puts its success down to
a firm focus on the overseas market. With
nearly 50% of its visitors from outside
the UK, the attraction has put out a big
‘welcome’ to international tourists. Their
Living History Tour, website and leaflets
are now available in seven different
languages - with Wimbledon Tennis
Club being the only other UK attraction
offering more language translations.
Beatles Story staff have attended a range
of overseas travel trade shows, including
events in Russia and Japan, targeting
Group Travel Organisers.
The attraction will continue to make

a significant investment in selling
Liverpool overseas in 2007. Further
translations are planned, including Polish
and Mandarin Chinese audio guides, plus
a family version of the Living History
Tour, appealing to children and school
groups. This year Liverpool John Lennon
Airport is expanding the destinations it
flies to - more good news for the Beatles
themed attraction.
With major developments around the
Albert Dock and surrounding waterfront
currently underway and exciting plans
in place to celebrate Liverpool’s 800th
birthday at the Dock, bosses at the Beatles
Story anticipate even stronger growth for
2007. A number of significant schemes
including Liverpool One, the Pier Head
Cruise Liner Terminal and the Arena and
Convention Centre Liverpool will present
businesses at the Albert Dock with a
range of exciting opportunities.
Jerry Goldman, director of the Beatles
Story said, “The Albert Dock is a
tremendously exciting place for visitors
and businesses. Not only is the Dock a
wonderful attraction in its own right
- we are privileged to see Liverpool
developing around us. The Liverpool One
retail scheme and Arena and Convention
Centre are being developed on our
doorstep, offering massive opportunities.
From 2008 onwards there will be no other
place to be - Liverpool will become one of
Europe’s leading city break destinations.”
In November 2006 the Albert Dock
re-focused the core of its business in
response to research that indicated its
leisure and tourism offering should be
developed to benefit from the dramatic
increase in visitors and residents to
the waterfront over the next few years.
The success of the Beatles Story and
neighbouring attractions demonstrates
the importance of leisure and tourism to
the Dock.
Ian Brown, director of the Albert Dock
Company said: “We are incredibly proud
to be home to the world-class Beatles
Story and absolutely support their efforts
to give visitors from both overseas and
the UK the warmest welcome possible.
The Albert Dock is Liverpool’s most
visited tourist attraction – 64 per cent of
all visitors to Liverpool come to the Dock.
We are currently looking at ways to build
on the success of our tourism and leisure
offering and have been in talks with a
number of leisure and tourism operators
looking to establish a presence here.”

Time to
increase sales
by Mike Le Put
At MLP
Training we
run regular
one-day ‘Goal
Setting & Time
Management
Workshops’ for
our customers.
I normally start the day by asking
delegates what they would like
to achieve from attending such a
programme. The two most popular
responses are as follows:
• I want to find more time
• I want to find enough time to do
everything
Let’s look at these two areas:
You can never find more time.
Everyone gets the same amount of
time. High achievers, low achievers
all get 24 hours in a day. Great sales
people, under-achieving sales people,
all get the same amount of time.
The question is not ‘Do you have the
time?’ but ‘What are you doing with
the time?’
‘I want to find enough time to do
everything.’ The truth is that there
is not enough time to do everything.
The latest figures I have from the US
are that the average American adult
spends 25 hours per week watching
television.
I am sure there are a lot of people
in America who would like to learn
to play the piano but say they haven’t
got the time. In reality, they have
the time but they choose to spend it
watching television. In this example,
one way to find more time to spend
on playing the piano is to spend less
time watching TV.
Given that there is no greater time
allocation available and there is not
enough time to do everything, you may
want to ask yourself where you could
spend less time so that you can spend
more time on your high priority areas.
Sales people should always be asking
‘What is the best use of my time right
now?’ Are you spending enough time
with your top customers? Are you
spending enough time on account
development? Are you spending too
much time in non-sales activities?
Goal setting is the master skill of time
management and time management
is the master skill of high achievers.
Remember that time is a level playing
field – everyone gets the same amount
of time. The difference between high
and low achievers is the way they
invest their time. It is a fact that
people with goals achieve more than
people with no goals. It is also a fact
that people with high goals achieve
more than people with low goals. That
doesn’t mean that they have more time
it just means they are more focussed,
sell more, earn more and achieve more.

and Time Management, call MLP

TNT in Liverpool:
A
s one of the world’s leading
express delivery companies,
TNT is a critical component
in ensuring businesses
in Liverpool and the
surrounding areas keep pace with the
demands of fast moving markets, both
domestically and on the international
front.
Having operated in and around the
city for nearly two decades, TNT
Express Services is totally committed to
serving the needs of the extensive and
diverse business community like never
before during 2007 and beyond.
A near £6million investment in a
new state-of-the-art depot adjacent to
Liverpool John Lennon Airport, aligned
to the creation of 0 jobs, is testimony
to the company’s confidence in the
future economic growth and prosperity
of Merseyside and the wider North-West
region.
Peter Lascelles is the man tasked
with meeting – even exceeding – the
expectations of thousands of TNT
customers, not just in Liverpool, but
also neighbouring centres of industry
and commerce encompassing Formby,
Haydock, Lymm, Runcorn, St Helens,
Warrington and Widnes.
As the new General Manager at the
4.3 acre site in Hale Road, Speke,
Peter and his team
are gearing up
to handle
somewhere between 5,000-20,000
collections and deliveries for UK,
European and worldwide destinations
each week.
A native of the North East, Peter, is
well versed with the Lancashire business
mix having chalked up award-winning
performances at TNT’s Manchester
International Depot in Trafford Park
and the much smaller ‘satellite’ facility
that preceded the new Liverpool
depot. As such, Liverpool’s vibrant
business world comprising shipping,
car manufacturing, chemicals and
technology to name but a few, will hold
few surprises for him.
reductions in fuel costs.
Situated next door to the airport
means the TNT complex, complete
with 56 loading bays, serves a dual
functionality as it incorporates the
air gateway, making it ideal for the
throughput of imports and exports.
Historically, TNT has predominantly
handled b-2-b traffic in Liverpool that
stayed within the UK but Peter can see
new horizons emerging.
“This gives us an ideal opportunity
to grow the international side of the
business. From the beginning of April
we will be operating on 44 different
collection and delivery rounds for our
Simplify
“I’m delighted to be running the
TNT operation in Liverpool in these
exciting and challenging times. The new
facility means we can offer a service
of unsurpassed quality and value to
customers whilst meeting the extra
demand from businesses in the area.
“Liverpool was a natural choice and
a key location when we were looking
to expand our strategic network. Our
operations in North West England have
been running close to capacity for some
time and the new depot, along with a
similar investment in Preston, now gives
us tremendous strength in depth,” said
Peter.
Location – or so it is often said – is
everything, and that maxim certainly
applies to TNT’s presence in Liverpool.
It is closer to the company’s customers
providing the obvious benefits of later
collections and earlier deliveries.
The stem mileage (the distance
travelled from the depot before
any collections and deliveries
are made) is much shorter,
bringing added benefits of
greater efficiency levels and
international vehicles in and around
the city. We have every hope and
expectation that things will, quite
literally, take-off in the coming months.”
As the only integrated express
operator with a permanent presence
at Liverpool John Lennon Airport,
TNT Express runs a daily schedule of
flights – inbound from the company’s
international air hub in Liege, Belgium
at 5.5am, and outbound to Dublin at
22.00hrs, en-route back to Liege.
This local link to international markets
gives TNT a distinctive edge over its
competitors in the region. Liverpool
is preparing to assume the mantle as
the European City of Culture in 2008
but TNT can spread the city’s business
prowess way beyond the continent.
This year has seen TNT Express
invest in new Boeing 747 jets to provide
bespoke services to and from the
Far East and the Middle East. The
burgeoning markets in the rapidly
emerging Chinese economy has seen
TNT take pole position as the largest
international express services player in
China.
The four-times-a-week Liege to
Shanghai ‘jumbo’ service means TNT
is ideally placed to meet the aspirations
of Liverpool’s business community to
convey goods into or out of China.
Innovators
“The beauty of the new depot and
our ability to offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for
both national and international pick
ups means if a customer wants to send
something to China and something to
Chester we can deal with it at the same
time, using the same driver and vehicle.
“We aim to simplify things for our
customers by instilling confidence , that
when they chose TNT they are selecting
high quality, value for money and
reliability of service.”
It’s pride in the job, along with
investment in leading edge technology,
that drives the entire TNT operation.
The depot first opened its doors in late
January 2007 and the management team
is no stranger to8-hour working days as
it strives to create a dynamic impact on
both existing and potential customers.
With a well-honed blend of
experienced TNT employees and new
recruits, Liverpool brings the company’s
complement of depots to seven in the
North West.
Renowned as innovators in the
industry, TNT was the first express
delivery company to introduce a same
day service in the UK 25 years ago.
TNT Sameday is acknowledged as the

Internationally, TNT enjoys a
partnership with the United Nations’
World Food Programme, helping raise
awareness of the need to combat global
hunger and funds to educate and feed
impoverished children in developing
countries.
In the words of two of Liverpool’s
favourite sons, John Lennon and Paul
McCartney, TNT continues to achieve
much in the field of corporate social
responsibility with a little help from its
friends.
Be it as a friend or as a business
partner, TNT Express Services has
made a 20-year commitment to
Liverpool. The very nature of the b2-b express delivery industry means
it is a barometer of the economy so a
successful TNT means a buoyant local
economy – good news for all!
Jumbo experience: Chinese markets are now within easy reach for
Liverpool’s businesses thanks to a new bespoke service from TNT
from a dedicated location in nearby
Warrington. A Queen’s Award for
Enterprise in the innovation category
is further testimony of the esteem in
which the company is held.
The company is also acutely aware of
its responsibilities as a good corporate
citizen. Liverpool could conceivably
benefit from a unique environmental
initiative if a pilot programme to run
the world’s first ever zero emission, high
performance 7.5 tonne electric vehicle
proves successful.
TNT is trialling the battery-powered
vehicle in London during the first
half of 2007 and, if all goes to plan,
will invest in up to 200 of the
non-polluting lorries and run
them in major cities and towns
in the next few years.
Peter said: “Not only
is this one of the most
environmentally friendly
vehicles on the market,
there is also a strong
economic argument
for having electronic lorries. It means
we can seek to reduce our carbon
footprint and sustain business revenue
at the same time.”
Acclaimed as one of an elite band of
companies in the UK who donate at
least one per cent of its pre-tax profits
to worthy causes, TNT
believes in
putting
something back in to the communities
in which it operates.
Here in Liverpool, youngsters who
are disadvantaged mentally, physically
or socially have benefited from the
