The Irish are rightly tired of being the subject of
jokes about guilt. In fact, it is from the Celtic
church that the whole experience of reconciliation in our tradition was creatively rescued and revived.
The Irish church was unique in its origins, not so much organized around dioceses, but around monasteries. Aspects of religious community life readily spilled over into
ordinary gatherings of the faithful, including the way people looked at sin and applied remedies. Unlike the public
nature of canonical penance, the Irish method was linked
to a kind of mentoring process they called “soul friending.” Just as young novice monks might find a mentor in
the wisdom of a senior guide, so did a way of penance
open up to ordinary folks. Monks were accustomed to
frequent confession of faults to the abbot or mentor, who
would suggest penances. In time, abbots with a certain
flair for this began to share lists of sins and corresponding
“tariffs” with others. Some of these books survive and provide a hair-raising view of long-ago sins like cattle rustling,
and a great deal of self-correction involving dips in icy
streams and rolling about in thickets of thorns. After the
penance was performed, the penitent returned to the
confessor, and in a private act marked by the laying on of
hands, or perhaps a kiss of the altar, the sinner was restored.
Irish monks were committed travelers and their methods
were widely copied. We might say that they saved a sacrament but at the expense of shifting attention to the sins of

LA TRADICIÓN
Santiago y Juan, además de ser hermanos,
eran tipos muy atrevidos. Se acercaron a
Jesús para pedirle puestos de poder y autoridad en el Reino que estaba estableciendo. Al darse
cuenta, los demás discípulos se molestaron con ellos,
probablemente porque deseaban los mismos puestos. La tentación y el deseo de poder es algo muy común a todos los seres humanos. Todos deseamos el
primer puesto y la estima de los demás. No obstante,
Jesús nos recuerda que no es fácil tener responsabilidad. La autoridad es un cáliz difícil de beber ya que
muchas veces contiene una bebida amarga y el peso
o decisión de ser fieles al Evangelio, aún a costa de la
propia vida. Por tal motivo, la persona que quiera
estar cerca de Jesús tendrá que aprender a ser como
Cristo, quien no vino a imponer su autoridad buscando ser servido, sino que vino a servir. Él, siendo Dios,
no se aferró a su condición divina, sino que se hizo
uno de tantos, cuidando a su madre por muchos
años, juntándose con pecadores, lavando los pies a
sus discípulos y dando la vida por todas las personas.
Estar al lado de Jesús no es cuestión de poder, sino
de amor y servicio, hasta dar la vida. Él nos puso el
ejemplo.

HONORING DEACON BOB MILLER
Deacon Bob Miller passed away peacefully to his loving
Lord on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. He passed away
at River Rock Living Center surrounded by his family and
faithful dog, Tiny. Deacon Bob was 96 years old. He will
now join his wife, Betty, for eternity in heaven. Deacon
Bob served our parish since 1994. Before his retirement,
he was very active in ministering to our parish community. He was a permanent fixture at weekend Masses, was
responsible for the RCIA program, baptized countless
babies and adults, celebrated weddings and offered kindness and love to all. We will remember Deacon Bob
fondly. Please pray for Deacon Bob and the family he has
left behind. Funeral services will be in spring of 2016.

Do you sometimes wonder what a certain passage from
the Bible actually means? Have you ever said, “I’d like to
read the Bible, but I’m not even sure where to start”?
What does it mean when people say they do “Bible
study”? What do they do?
In this class we’ll talk about those questions and much
more. We’ll look at how the Bible was originally put together and how we use it in Mass. We’ll talk about how
you can use the Bible to help you pray, as a guide to be a
better Catholic & Christian, and even how it can be used
to help you make important decisions in your day-to-day
life! All adults are invited to attend this session led by
“Deacon Doctor Doug”. We’ll show parents how they can
help their children understand the Bible better. But this
class will also be valuable to ALL adults, even if you don’t
have any children! We will include some teaching, some
reflection, some time for questions & answers.

un cierto verso de la Biblia?¿ Ha dicho una vez, “Me
gustaría leer la Biblia pero no se ni donde empezar”?
¿Qué significa cuando uno dice que hacen un “Estudio de

En esta clase hablaremos de estas preguntas y mucho
mas. Veremos como la Biblia fue juntada originalmente y
como la usamos durante la Misa. Hablaremos de como
se puede usar la biblia para orar, para guiarse a ser un
buen Católico, y para ayudarse en tomar decisiones
importantes en su vida. Todos los adultos son invitados a
asistir a esta platica dada por el Diacono Doctor Doug.
Ensenaremos a padres a como pueden ayudar a sus niños
a entender la Biblia si los tienen. Habrá enseñanza,
reflexión, y tiempo para preguntar y contestar.
