From The Principal
Dear Families,
Bulletin No. 8
Celebrating Success - Superstars in our midst!
We’re always thrilled to celebrate the outstanding successes and achievements of members of our Brooks High
School community. This week we acknowledge:
Mr Michael Forrest - tireless volunteer at Brooks High
school who last week received the Launceston City
Council’s outstanding Achievement Award in Community
Health and Education. Mr Forrest volunteers three days
per week, every week at our school, giving generously of
his time to assist with the learning of our students.
Grade 8 student, Alexander McCutcheon who recently received recognition as the top performing
Brooks High School student on the 2012 National
Assessment Programme for Literacy and Numeracy.
It was a very proud family, (Mum, Dad, Nan and Pop)
who joined Alexander for morning tea with other
northern students and their families and then watched
the presentation of awards by the Minister for Education
representative, Mr Paul O’Halloran at a special function
at Prospect High School last week.

Celebrating Our
Community Contributions
The Chief Executive Officer of ABLE (supporting
adults with disabilitites) met with our senior
performance and production students on Friday. The
purpose of this meeting was to offer our students
feedback about the impact their devised performance
had on the performers and audience at Fusion ( a
celebration of the Arts in the lives of people living with
disability) in April.
Netball Teams Ready For The Winter Roster
Last Saturday a very impressive five netball teams represented Brooks High School in the first Winter roster
games. Our thanks to Mrs Michelle Brook, Ms Cara Nichols, Ms Karen Dudley and Ms Carly Grenda for their
support in coaching our teams.
It’s been wonderful to see the commitment of the girls to their sport; training at lunch time and after school,
under the expert care of our staff. Ms Steffi Grenda who has represented and captained Tasmanian teams at
many national competitions will be assisting our team as an umpire.
Making a Difference Project a Success
Congratulations to our Social Entrepreneurs Group who last week sold out of Orange
Cup Cakes in just one break time. 108 cup cakes were sold for $1 each to raise
funds to support our adoption of a baby orang-utan – an endangered species.
Students reported the cup cakes tasted fantastic as well as looked good!
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Grade 7 and Grade 9 students
who sat the National Literacy and Numeracy testing
programme last week. I was impressed with our
students’ commitment to this task and extremely
appreciative of the ways in which our staff had
prepared our students. Results from this year’s
testing programme will not be available until
September.
Teachers Continue Their
Personal Learning
A team of very dedicated staff gave up their weekend
to attend the annual Hawker Brownlow Conference
in Melbourne this week. The specific focus for our
staff was on the work of Lee Crockett who
specialises in working with teachers in the areas of
knowledge building, self-regulation, collaboration, real
world problem-solving and ICT – the fluencies of the
21st century.
Cross Country Carnival
Coming up is our fantastic Cross Country Carnival.
It’s been impressive to see the dedication and
commitment of students to their training programme
for this during Phys. Ed. lessons.
Congratulations - - - 
To Mrs Jude Preece our English as an Additional
Language Leader. Jude recently spoke at the
opening of the Migrant Resource Centre’s
Voluntary Tutoring Programme.

To Huda Ali and Mawada Sulaiman who also
spoke at the opening of the same centre; in front
of a very large and distinguished audience.
A further focus was on working with adolescent
students to improve and fine tune their reading skills.
Both of these are focus areas in our School Strategic
Plan and our staffs’ new learning will be of important
benefit to our students.
Visiting Teachers
We currently have a number of visiting undergraduate
teachers working alongside our expert staff as part of
their University studies. A warm Brooks High School
welcome is extended to:
Anthony Murray – Grade 8
Sally Grates – Grade 7
Marian Walker – Grade 10
Malia Valenciano – Phys. Ed.
Andrew Morgan – Visual Arts and Digital Media
Mikaela Campbell – Performing Arts
Defence Force Visit
Students in Grade 8, 9 and 10 were able to
participate in an information session on Monday with
representatives from the Australian Defence Forces.
The focus of the session was on updating students
about what a Defence Force career is all about; the
huge range of different trades available, wages,
qualifications and the benefits.

Congratulations to thirteen of our Grade 10 students who have
been accepted into the CAP@TAFE (Career Awareness) Programme.
This programme enables students to participate in very focussed
pathways learning through TAFE for part of their Grade 10 year.
These students will spend part of each week studying the vocation
they have identified as being of critical interest to them.
