Requests? Email us at [email protected] By Jim Neff, Director, Greencroft Communities Foundation Our employee benevolence funds are so important for the work we do. Have you ever been in a situation where you could not pay the electric, heat or medical bills that came due? Do you remember how much stress that put on you and how it affected your job performance? At times we have team members who deal with these stresses and more. Especially during the winter months, I will get calls from team members whose heat will be turned off at the end of the day. It is easy to tell from the conversation that these team members have looked everywhere else, and without the employee benevolence fund, they would be going without heat in the dead of winter. This is the reason that we have established an employee benevolence fund at each of our eight affiliates. Not only do these funds help the team member pay a bill, they allow the team member to continue providing great care to our residents in the process. Each year we give team members the opportunity to contribute to their benevolence fund, and I am amazed at the generosity we see. It is extremely gratifying to see team members wanting to help a coworker out who is struggling. No matter if the gift is one dollar or $1,000, the gift makes a difference. While the majority of the contributions to these funds come from team members, please consider making a gift to the employee benevolence fund at the community that you care about. While you will not know who you are helping, rest assured your gift will be used to make an impactful difference to a team member in need. 2 GC_Giving_2016Summer_resized.indd 2 6/21/16 2:53 PM Benevolence for employees During his 48 years as the CEO leading three faith-based retirement communities, including Golden Years Homestead in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Great Lakes Christian Homes near Lansing, Mich., Tom Garman often helped out employees from his own pocket. “Years ago, we had a lot of single mothers—nurses’ aids and others with similar roles—who did not have the highest paying jobs,” Tom says. “One time when I was in my twenties, a single mom asked for an advance on her pay check. I explained that I did not have board authorization to do that and asked why she needed an advance. She said her baby was sick, and she needed money to buy medicine. I said she could pay it back some time in the future, but she never could.” Word of his personal benevolence spread among his employees; soon there were 15-20 employees each asking for as much as $100 from him. “That became too much for me personally,” Tom says, “so we started a loan program. We put $1,000 into it that employees could borrow. But when we reached the $1,000 limit, we had to decline to make more loans because people were not paying back their loans.” So Tom again reached into his pocket. “One gal—again a single mother—needed new parts and supplies for her car,” Tom says, “so I paid for them. There are so many employees at the low end of the wage scale, and they have so many needs. If their car doesn’t run, they can’t come to work.” Tom admits that he’s Continued on page 4. Membership: Membership is open to all who wish to make a lasting gift; there is no minimum donation for society membership. This includes gifts through wills, retirement plans and insurance policies, as well as life income and other deferred gifts. Eligibility: To become eligible for the Gold Leaf Legacy Society, a prospective donor informs the Greencroft Communities Foundation in writing that the foundation of his or her choosing has been included in their estate plans. Tom, an ordained minister, says that as Christians we are called to take care of the poor. “If the need is not legitimate and they take advantage,” Tom says, “shame on them.” But many of the needs were legitimate. Tom knows that his personal benevolence influenced a culture of generosity on the campuses he served over the years. “The staff make it a ministry,” Tom says, “and these employees have needs. We needed to minister to them as they minister to our residents.” The Golden Years and Great Lakes campuses comprise the not-for-profit Christian Ministries Inc. (CMI), which became the seventh affiliate in Melissa Hughes Gladys Johns Myrtis Justiniano Ivan and Lola Kauffmann Mark and Pushpa King Albert and Dorothy Lane Matthew and Connie Lentsch Robert and Gail Martin the Greencroft Communities system on July 1, 2015. As a gesture of respect for Tom’s generosity and personal benevolence, Greencroft Communities Foundation staff and CMI board created the Tom Garman Employee Benevolence Fund. Since the fall of 2015, 42 people have made personal contributions to the fund. As of June 1, the balance stood at $7,948 after providing the first team member with a $375 grant. He has some suggestions for folks who wish to leave some of their estate to an individual and/or a charity at their passing. “One of the asset classes to use for charitable giving at death,” Randall says, “is a qualified plan asset such as a traditional IRA or a 401k plan.” “Qualified plan” refers to GC_Giving_2016Summer_resized.indd 8 assets on which the income tax has been deferred and needs to be paid by an individual who is the beneficiary of the asset. Income taxes would already have been paid on non-qualified plans, such as real estate or investment accounts left to an individual. “If you give a $100,000 IRA to your daughter who is in a high tax bracket,” Randall says, “that $100,000 might be worth only $60,000 in real dollars [after she pays the federal income tax]. But if you name your Foundation as the beneficiary of that $100,000 IRA, it would be a $100,000 contribution to the Foundation because, as a not-for-profit organization, the Foundation does not pay income taxes.” Because these rules are set by the federal government, they apply to any of the foundations that have been set up for most of the affiliates in the Greencroft Communities system.
