PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Good Things Coming
Now that it‘s the middle of the summer, we will be holding a Board
Strategic Planning Meeting. Many
of our previous programs and activities will be reviewed and discussed.
Fresh ideas are presented and developed for the coming year. But
without you, our committees and
Board will start going stale.
At many different times, committee
chairs, past presidents and myself have used our newsletter and the various
podiums at FPA events to appeal for your input and help. Many of you
have listened and stepped up to the plate. We‘ve been able to branch out
and take more innovative approaches. Our new slate for officers and board
members will be drawn from those of you who have stepped forward and
volunteered your time, ideas and efforts. But we still need new help. We
will be offering all of you several opportunities to lend a hand with committee work. A year of committee work is required to join our Board and Executive Board. If you are serving on a committee, please let your chair
know that you are ready to move up to the Board or contact our Chapter
Administrator, Janet Cino (516-542-2004, [email protected]) or myself
(631-366-1999, [email protected]) regarding your interest and availability to serve.

The Symposium Committee has been working hard
to put together topics and speakers for the premier annual
event on Long Island: The 11th Annual Symposium
and Exhibition of the FPA of Long Island! It will take place on
Friday, October 29, 2010, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. All of our speakers and topics are already lined up for the day.
Nationally known speakers Jerry A. Webman, Chief Economist at
OppenheimerFunds, Michael E. McDermott, counsel for Farrell Fritz
with extensive experience in the area of healthcare law, and Evan
Cooper, Deputy Editor of Investment News, will be our Keynote and
Luncheon Speakers. You can look forward to Robert Goldfarb starting
things off as our pre-conference speaker, by presenting his very timely
Tax Update session. Vincent Russo will return offering a session on last
minute Medicaid Planning; David Baram will be discussing the nuts and
bolts of credit analysis; Eric Kramer will be presenting on the sunset provision of the tax code; and many other fine speakers and topics are lined
up for the day and you won‘t want to miss them.
In addition to the fine education you receive at the annual
symposium it is also a great opportunity to meet up with old colleagues,
meet new ones, speak with your peers and our partners to find out the
best way to help us help our clients in this ever challenging economic
environment.
The full Symposium agenda is included on the following page, so
be sure to look it over. Use the registration form included there to sign
up today. The Symposium brochure is in the process of being printed
and is scheduled to be mailed to all members in early September.
You will once again be able to earn up to 8 CFP and/or CPA
credits during the day. You will also be able to earn 2 hours of NY State
Insurance CE credit.
We hope to have 300 people in attendance this year. Some
sponsorships are still available, so sign up now to reserve your space.
Anyone wishing to get involved in this chapter might consider
joining the Symposium Committee, there are many opportunities to help
out. We can always use assistance at the event with moderating in each
session, or maybe you would like to take photographs at the event, and
we can always use extra hands the night before at our famous ―Stuffing
Party.‖ Anyone interested in joining the committee should give me a call
at 631-845-5100 or email me at [email protected].
I’m looking forward to seeing you on October 29th!

The FPA Spring Insurance Education Workshop
This year‘s Spring Education workshop, held on May 4, 2010 at Carlyle on the Green
in Bethpage, featured a diverse range of educational courses geared toward traditional
Financial Planning topics rather than the usual insurance centric topics. Course
evaluations indicated an overwhelming majority of attendees liked this new approach to this year‘s Insurance Education Workshop. In addition to the educational opportunities, attendees took advantage of
the breaks during breakfast & lunch to network with their
colleagues.
Brian Hill from Nationwide
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the speakers who
volunteered their time to make this day a success. Brian Hill,
representing Nationwide, showed us ways to use life Insurance
to make Business Succession Planning more comprehensive
and effective. Chapter member John Doran, representing
Hartford, explained the ramifications of using Life Insurance
for Special Needs Planning for children. Joel Steinberg,
representing Guardian, explained how to use Disability
Insurance to protect your retirement plan contributions. Jeng
Chiu, representing Prudential, showed us effective strategies
for getting more out of annuities in client portfolios. Finally,
Steve Brundage, representing Prudential, showed how to
use alternate investments in your client‘s Variable Annuity
Portfolio.
We are looking for volunteers to help set up this program for next year. If you want to help our chapter make next
year‘s event a success, please contact Janet Cino, Anthony
Papa, or Barry Eckstein.
