BC Hockey Year in Review 2013-2014 Year in Review 1 2013-2014 was another exciting season for BC Hockey, associations and teams across the province. As we prepare for the upcoming season, we reflect on the past year’s successes and look forward to another sensational hockey season. BC Hockey teams were back on the podium this season with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks capturing the 2014 Keystone Cup, Western Canadian Junior B Championship in Abbotsford, BC and the Okanagan Rockets bringing home the province’s first bronze medal at the TELUS Cup. The Male U16 Team BC took silver at the 2013 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup and Vernon, BC hosted the 2014 RBC Cup, the National Junior A Championship, for the second time. BC players continue to represent the province and Canada at numerous National and International events including the Winter Olympics, World Junior Championship, Men’s and Women’s World Championship and Men’s and Women’s Under 18 World Championships. Wilf Liefke President In a constantly changing technological and social environment, BC Hockey has led Hockey Canada branches by launching the first mobile app of its kind. The social media landscape continues to evolve and change the way we communicate and BC Hockey is always looking at improving communications about our programs and member successes through a wide variety of channels to the membership and hockey public. All the hard work and dedication of our volunteers is what helps BC Hockey achieve great success on many levels. We are proud of our achievements this season and look forward to creating many more as we continue to lead, develop and promote positive lifelong hockey experiences. Barry Petrachenko Executive Director 2013-2014 Year in Review 2 The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) High Performance 1 Seminar took place July 28, 2013 to August 2, 2013 in Penticton, BC. Over 20 coaches attended to take part on-ice practices and game situations on the bench, learning from some of the best including Barry Trotz and Todd Harkins. This year, the seminar was integrated with the Okanagan Hockey School – Midget Showcase Week. 2013-2014 Year in Review 3 Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove) and Micah Hart (Saanichton) were invited to the 2013 IIHF Women’s High Performance Camp in Sheffield, England from July 14 – 21, 2013. Both Potomak and Hart were members of Team BC that competed at the 2012 and 2013 National Women’s U18 Championships in Dawson Creek, BC and Calgary, AB. They have also been involved in Canada’s National Women’s Program. 2013-2014 Year in Review 4 Thirty-six players attended the Male Under 16 Provincial Camp in Nanaimo, BC from July 9 - 14, 2013. The players were selected based on their performance at the Region Camps and BC Cup. Ten (10) BC Major Midget League (MML) alumni were chosen in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in Newark, New Jersey on June 30, 2013. Shea Theodore (Aldergrove - 26th overall by Anaheim Ducks), Nic Petan (Vernon – 43rd overall by Winnipeg Jets), Tristan Jarry (Delta – 44th overall by Pittsburgh Penguins), Jackson Houck (Vancouver – 94th overall by Edmonton Oilers), Evan Campbell (Port Coquitlam – 128th overall by Edmonton Oilers), Mackenzie Skapski (Abbotsford – 170th overall by New York Rangers), Wade Murphy (Victoria – 185th overall by Nashville Predators), Jedd Soleway (Vernon – 193rd overall by Phoenix Coyotes), Kyle Burroughs (Langley – 196th overall by New York Islanders) and Nolan De Jong (Victoria – 197th overall by Minnesota Wild). 2013-2014 Year in Review 6 In July 2013, Nancy Wilson was the first female to ever be inducted in the BC Hockey Hall of Fame at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, BC. Wilson has been involved with BC Hockey and the High Performance Program in various roles for many years. She is a former head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds, BC Breakers, Vancouver Griffins, Team BC at the Canada Winter Games, Senior Team BC and was an Assistant Coach with Canada’s Women’s team at the Four Nations Cup and World Championships. 2013-2014 Year in Review 7 Mark Recchi (Kamloops), Paul Kariya (Vancouver), Marc Crawford (Belleville, ON), Colin Patterson (Rexdale, ON) and the 19931994 and 1994-1995 Kamloops Blazers were inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in July 2013. 2013-2014 Year in Review 8 Brielle Bellerive (North Vancouver), Alyssa Erickson (Mission), Micah Hart (Saanichton), Hannah Miller (Vancouver), Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove) and Lauren Spring (Kelowna) attended the Canadian National Women’s U18 Selection Camp in August 2013 in Rockland, Ontario. All six (6) players have been involved in the BC Hockey High Performance program and were part of Team BC at the National Women’s U18 Championship in Calgary, Alberta. 2013-2014 Year in Review 9 Kimberley Newell (Burnaby), Kaleigh Fratkin (Burnaby), Jordan Krause (Kelowna) and Julia McKinnon (left to right) attended the National Women’s Development Team Selection Camp in August 2013 in Calgary, Alberta. All four (4) players have played on Team BC, been involved in the BC Hockey High Performance Program and are currently playing university hockey. Newell, Krause and McKinnon participated in the 2011 Canada Winter Games while Fratkin played in the 2007 Canada Winter Games. 2013-2014 Year in Review 10 On September 21, 2013, Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association hosted a Sledge Hockey Try-It event in Sechelt, BC. Current sledge hockey players ran drills and taught players the basics of the game. 2013-2014 Year in Review 11 World Girls Hockey Weekend took place October 12 - 13, 2013 around the globe, with several exciting events in BC. The BC portions of the Longest Game took place in Cranbrook, Hazelton, Richmond and Parksville, the UBC Women’s Hockey team raised their 2013 Canada West Championship banner to the rafters, the VIJHL, BCHL and WHL hosted female players at their games, the Vancouver Angels held a skills competition and the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Pursuit of Excellence took to the ice in a couple exhibition games. 2013-2014 Year in Review 12 BC Hockey official Trevor Hanson (Richmond, BC) made his first NHL officiating debut in Dallas Texas on October 24, 2013 when the Calgary Flames visited the Dallas Stars. He worked the game with 13 year NHL veteran referee Kevin Pollock and linesmen Don Henderson and Johnny Murray. Hanson started officiating in 1997 with the Richmond Minor Hockey Association. He received his Level Six (6) in 2009 and has worked many National and International events including 2010 RBC Cup, 2010 and 2011 World Junior A Challenge, 2010 Subway Super Series and 2012 World U18 Championship. 2013-2014 Year in Review 13 BC Hockey officials Steve Papp (Kelowna) and Nathan Vanoosten (Surrey) were assigned to IIHF events. Papp was selected as a referee for the 2014 World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden and Vanoosten was assigned as a linesman for the 2014 World Junior Championship, Division One (1) Grade B in Dumfries, Great Britain. 2013-2014 Year in Review 14 Team BC fell short in their bid for back to back gold medals at the Western Challenge U16 Cup with a 4 – 2 loss to Team Alberta on November 3, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta. Beck Malenstyn (Penticton) scored Team BC’s first goal from Caleb Fantillo (Coquitlam) and Cameron Coutre (Victoria). Fantillo netted the second for Team BC from Josh Anderson (Duncan). Brody Wilms (Coquitlam) stopped 36 of 40 shots for Team BC. 2013-2014 Year in Review 15 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Eight (8) BC players were selected to the 2013 Team Canada West roster for the 2013 World Junior A Challenge in November 2013 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Jesse Jenks (Crofton – Prince George Spruce Kings), Adam Plant (Penticton – West Kelowna Warriors), Dane Birks (Williams Lake – Merritt Centennials), Viktor Dombrovskiy (Coquitlam – Langley Rivermen), Steen Cooper (Duncan – Cowichan Valley Capitals), Deminco Hannoun (North Delta – Vernon Vipers), Alex Gillies (Vernon – Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and Jeff Wright (Coquitlam – Merritt Centennials) were selected. Team Canada West captured the bronze medal with a 5 – 3 win over Team Switzerland. 2013-2014 Year in Review 16 The Female U18 Team BC competed at the 2013 Women’s U18 National Championship in November in Calgary, Alberta. Team BC suffered a pair of losses and tie during the preliminary rounds, failing to advance to the medal round. Alyssa Erickson (Mission) led the team with four (4) points in three (3) games. 2013-2014 Year in Review 17 BC Hockey official Trent Knorr (Powell River) made his NHL officiating debut at the Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 13, 2013 as the Minnesota Wild hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs. At the age of 17, Knorr was working the lines for the ECHL Victoria Salmon Kings games where he progressed quickly and was soon working the Royal Bank Cup. He followed that up with being selected to line the 2010 Memorial Cup. After reaching this major milestone at age 23, Knorr decided to make the switch to wearing the bands and become a Referee at the Major Junior level with the Western Hockey League (WHL). 2013-2014 Year in Review 18 On Sunday, December 8, 2013 upwards of 300 minor hockey coaches throughout the Lower Mainland descended on Rogers Arena bright and early for Coaching Day in BC. Coaching Day in BC is an annual event that the Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with BC Hockey and Hockey Canada, offer for free to minor hockey coaches throughout the province. Coaches were treated to an exclusive viewing of a full Canucks practice ahead of their game against the Colorado Avalanche. 2013-2014 Year in Review 19 The Female Midget AAA Fraser Valley Phantom won the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament with a 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Astros at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan on December 8, 2013. The Phantom defeated the host Notre Dame Hounds 1-0 in the semi-final round to advance to the final game. Zoe Todd (Vancouver) and Chelsea Wilson (Langley) had the goals for the Phantom. 2013-2014 Year in Review 20 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Four (4) BC players were named to Canada’s National Junior team that participated at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden after participating in the National Junior Team Selection Camp. Griffin Reinhart (West Vancouver – WHL Edmonton Oil Kings), Curtis Lazar (Vernon – WHL Edmonton Oil Kings), Nic Petan (Delta – WHL Portland Winterhawks) and Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver – WHL Kootenay Ice). Team Canada lost to Finland in the semi-finals and suffered a devastating loss to Russia in the bronze medal game. 2013-2014 Year in Review 21 The Female Midget AAA Fraser Valley Phantom fell to the Westman Wildcats 2-1 in triple overtime in the Championship Game at the Mac’s Female Midget AAA Hockey Tournament. This is the furthest a BC female midget team has advanced at the tournament. Brianna Keats (Chilliwack) scored the Phantom’s only goal. Valencia Yordanov (Port Coquitlam) and Jodi Gentile (Richmond) were named to the First All Star Team and Shannon Morris-Reade (Port Coquitlam) named to the Second All-Star Team. Yordanov also won Best Goaltender and Gentile had the Best Plus/Minus of the tournament. 2013-2014 Year in Review 22 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Team Pacific settled for silver at the 2014 World U17 Hockey Challenge with a 4-0 loss to the United States in the championship game on January 4, 2014. The team overpowered Russia 7-3 in the semi’s to advance to the final. Thirteen BC players were a part of Team Pacific: Nick McBride (Maple Ridge), Kevin Davis (Kamloops), Joe Gatenby (Kelowna), Chaz Reddekopp (West Kelowna), Noah Juulsen (Abbotsford), Parker Wotherspoon (Surrey), Adam Musil (Delta), Matthew Barzal (Coquitlam), Nick Chyzowski (Kamloops), Glenn Gawdin (Richmond), Brad Morrison (Prince George), Tyler Soy (Surrey) and Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver). 2013-2014 Year in Review 23 On January 7, 2014, a BC Hockey minor hockey player dressed in full gear and joined the Vancouver Canucks starting line up for the National anthems as they took on the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the Every Kids Dream Contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 24 As part of the Every Kids’ Dream contest, a minor hockey player from the Burnaby Winter Club joined the Vancouver Canucks on the blue line for the National anthems as the team took on St. Louis Blues on January 10, 2014. 2013-2014 Year in Review 25 Team Blue scored an 8-6 win over Team White at the 2014 Major Midget League All-Star game that was held at the George Preston Arena on January 17, 2014. Team Blue goals were scored by Dexter Robinson (Kamloops), Jake Kryski (Kelowna), Liam Finlay (Kelowna), two (2) by Tanner Campbell (Kelowna) and three (3) from Matt Bradley (Surrey). Team White goals were scored by Hunter Findlater (Powell River), Colton Kerfoot (West Kelowna) and a pair from each Dante Fabbro (Whistler) and Dante Hannoun (Delta). Game Stars went to Finlay, Bradley and Hannoun. 2013-2014 Year in Review 26 Lake Cowichan Minor Hockey player Alex Rudzik joined the Vancouver Canucks on the blue line before the game against the Calgary Flames on January 18, 2014 as part of Every Kids Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 27 Kolby Hay joined Vancouver Canucks goalie Eddie Lack for the singing of the National anthems during the Canucks vs. Nashville Predators game on January 23, 2014 as part of Every Kids’ Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 28 On January 26, 2014, a BC Hockey minor hockey player joined the Vancouver Canucks on the blue line for the National anthems as part of the Every Kids’ Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 29 BC Minor Hockey Week ran January 19-25, 2014 with several exciting contests and events held around the province. One hundred twenty nine teams entered the Penalty Free Challenge after having a penalty free game during the week. We also asked players via social media to submit pictures of them “Being a Teammate” for a chance to win a BC Hockey swag bag. Minor hockey players and officials were selected to attend the Vancouver Canucks game on January 23, 2014 to stand on the blue line in full hockey gear with the Canucks starting line-up during the playing of the National anthem. 2013-2014 Year in Review 30 The first WHL Officiating Night was held at the CN Centre in Prince George as the Lethbridge Hurricanes took on the Prince George Cougars on January 21, 2014. Minor hockey officials met WHL officials prior to the game for a question and answer session and to learn what it takes to become a official at that level. Katy Wendling and Danika Kroeker from Prince George MHA, Cole Rennie from Houston MHA and Nic Warkentin from Vanderhoof MHA joined the WHL officials on the ice for the National anthem. 2013-2014 Year in Review 31 Another WHL Officiating Night took place at Prospera Place when the Kelowna Rockets hosted the Spokane Chiefs on January 29, 2014. Ten minor hockey officials met with WHL officials prior to the game to learn about officiating at the WHL level. Branton Grinde from Penticton MHA, Colby Mintram from Kelowna MHA, Keegan Christensen from Langley MHA and Maxim Sprenger from Kelowna MHA got the chance to join the WHL officials on the ice for the National anthem. 2013-2014 Year in Review 32 At the WHL officiating night at the Interior Savings Centre on January 31, 2014, minor hockey officials had the opportunity to learn what officiating at the WHL level is like and how to get there. That night, the Kamloops Blazers hosted the Kelowna Rockets. Lucky minor hockey officials Kate Felmark from North Okanagan MHA, Sheldon Musselman from Clearwater and District MHA, Declan McGarry from Logan Lake MHA and Ethan Smith from Kamloops joined the WHL officials on the ice for the National anthem. 2013-2014 Year in Review 33 From February 11 – 13, 2014, 40 injured soldiers from Canada, USA, Australia and Great Britain experienced sledge hockey instruction from some of BC Hockey’s finest at the Soldier-On Allied Winter Camp. The event was held in partnership with the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Paralympic Committee. Participants look forward to this annual winter camp each year and is always a big success. 2013-2014 Year in Review 34 Five (5) BC players were named to Team Canada for the 2014 Winter Olympics that brought home the gold medal, for the second time in a row, in February 2014. Carey Price (Anahim Lake – Montreal Canadiens), Dan Hamhuis (Smithers – Vancouver Canucks), Duncan Keith (Penticton – Chicago Blackhawks), Shea Weber (Sicamous – Nashville Predators) and Jamie Benn (Victoria – Dallas Stars). 2013-2014 Year in Review 35 On February 28, 2014, a BC Hockey minor hockey player joined the Vancouver Canucks starting lineup for the National anthem during the game against the Minnesota Wild. He was a winner of the Every Kids’ Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 36 BC Hockey Hall of Fame announced the 2014 inductees which include retired NHL players, a development coordinator and a Memorial Cup Championship team. Those selected were: BC Hockey Associate-Director, Bill Ennos, former Vancouver Canuck, Kirk McLean, retired NHL’er Pat Price and 2003-2004 Memorial Cup Champions, Kelowna Rockets. The BC Hockey Hall of Fame induction will be held Friday, July 25, 2014 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, BC. 2013-2014 Year in Review 37 BC Hockey launched the first ever mobile app of it’s kind for Hockey Canada branches in February 2014. The app is designed for hockey players, coaches, parents, officials and fans. Some of the key features that users can access in the palm of their hand include: practice plans, training videos, the officiating handbook, a live scoreboard, arena maps and a Photobooth where users can instantly create their own personalized hockey cards! Nearly 4,000 people have downloaded the free app for Apple and Android. 2013-2014 Year in Review 38 Fraser Valley defeated Fraser River Delta 3-2 in the gold medal game at the 2014 BC Winter Games on February 23, 2014 at the Mission Leisure Centre in Mission, BC. The bronze medal game featured Okanagan and Vancouver-Squamish squaring off with Okanagan coming out on top 3-0. The teams were comprised from under 16 players from the Female U16 Zone Camps that were held in early January 2014. 2013-2014 Year in Review 39 On March 10, 2014, a BC Hockey minor hockey player joined the Vancouver Canucks starting line up for the singing of the National anthems against New York Islanders as part of the Every Kid’s Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 40 BC Hockey championships took place at various locations across the province from March 16 – 21, 2014. 2013-2014 Year in Review 41 Over 100 female players aged five (5) to seven (7) from across the province took over Burnaby Eight Rinks for a fun weekend of games, hockey and new friends at the Canucks Female Jamboree from March 21 – 23, 2014. The Vancouver Canucks mascot, Fin, joined the girls for the opening ceremonies and Team Canada gold medalist Meghan Agosta spoke to the girls on the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. 2013-2014 Year in Review 42 On March 8, 2014, Tate Varela joined the Vancouver Canucks on the blue line for the singing of the National anthems when they took on the Calgary Flames as part of the Every Kid’s Dream contest. 2013-2014 Year in Review 43 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Photo credit: HHOF-IIHF Images Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images For the third straight year, Team Canada won gold at the 2014 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, defeating the US 5-1 on March 30, 2014. Five (5) BC players were part of the team: Brielle Bellerive (North Vancouver), Micah Hart (Saanichton), Hannah Miller (Vancouver), Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove) and Lauren Spring (Kelowna). Potomak finished the tournament on top of the leaderboard with eight (8) points from five (5) goals and three (3) assists in five (5) games. Miller finished with a goal and an assist and Hart had an assist. 2013-2014 Year in Review 44 The Okanagan Rockets captured their second BC Major Midget League Championship with a 4 – 3 series clinching win over the Vancouver North West Giants on Saturday, March 22, 2014. The Rockets won the best-of-three series 2 – 0 at the Burnaby Winter Club. In game one (1), Tanner Browne (Kelowna) scored the game winner with a power play goal in the second for the 2 – 1 victory. Brendan Barry (Kelowna) was stellar in the final frame to preserve the win. In game two (2), the game was tied at three (3) heading into the final frame. Jake Kryski (Kelowna) scored a breakaway goal with a beautiful shot and although the Giants pressed hard, they could not beat Barry in net. The loss snapped the Giants five (5) year reign as BC MML Champions. 2013-2014 Year in Review 45 The North Shore Winter Club captured the gold medal at the 2014 Western Canadian Championship with a 4 – 3 win over the Lloydminster Heat in double overtime on Sunday, April 6, 2014 in Kelowna, BC. This is the third championship in four (4) years for the BC representative. The North Shore Winter Club capped off an undefeated round robin series with a thrilling championship game. Nolan Kneen (North Vancouver) was the hero for North Shore scoring the game winner at 11:00 of the second overtime. Host team Kelowna defeated the Winnipeg Monarchs 2 – 1 for the bronze medal. 2013-2014 Year in Review 46 For the third consecutive year, the Fraser Valley Phantom are the Female Midget AAA Champions. The Phantom defeated the Thompson Okanagan Rockets in two (2) games of their best-of-three series. Game one (1) was a close battle with a narrow 2 -0 victory for the Phantom and game two (2) proved be another tough game with a 1 – 0 victory. Phantom goalie Valencia Yordanov (Port Coquitlam) and Rockets goalie Rachel Fontinha (Penticton) were stellar in net. 2013-2014 Year in Review 47 Ten Female Midget AAA League players were chosen as the 2013 – 2014 FMAAA All Star Team first and second lines. First line (top row, left to right) Madison Fjellstrom (Prince George), Shannon Morris-Reade (Port Coquitlam), Mackenzie Wong (Surrey), Mikayla Ogrodniczuk (Vancouver), Jessie Olfert (Penticton) and Valencia Yordanov (Port Coquitlam). Second line (bottom row, left to right): Kristin Martin (Rosedale), Denomie Vokerother-Fisher (Rossland), Chelsea Wilson (Langley), Chantelle Beadman-Rolfe (Williams Lake), Mckayla Yuris (Trail) and Morgan Flynn (Castlegar). 2013-2014 Year in Review 48 For the first time in franchise history, the Okanagan Rockets won the 2014 Regional Championship with an overtime win in game three (3) over the defending champions the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs. The Rockets won game one (1) 3 – 1, dropped game two (2) 7 – 1 and netted an overtime goal in game three (3) for the victory. Liam Finlay (Kelowna), who scored the overtime winner, was named the Okanagan Rockets Player of the Game. 2013-2014 Year in Review 49 The Canucks Centre for BC Hockey introduced a new minor hockey award to honor former Canucks great Pavel Bure who had his number retired this past season. The award is open to players in peewee, bantam and midget who exemplify leadership qualities on and off the ice, integrity, passion, teamwork and courage with his/her team. Liam Scott (North Vancouver Storm, Peewee A2) was presented with the Pavel Bure award by Bure himself at the Vancouver Canucks game on April 13, 2014. 2013-2014 Year in Review 50 The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Champions, Beaver Valley Nitehawks, defeated the Aldergrove Kodiaks 5 – 2 in the gold medal game at the 2014 Cyclone Taylor Cup on April 13, 2014 in Nelson, BC. The game was tied at one (1) heading into the final period where the Nitehawks offence exploded and were able to skate away with a three (3) goal championship victory. The Victoria Cougars defeated the Nelson Leafs 3 – 0 for the bronze medal. 2013-2014 Year in Review 51 The Kamloops Vibe won the 2014 Western Shield in the Senior B category on April 13, 2014 with a 1 – 0 win over Assiniboine Community College Cougars. The Vibe finished the round robin with a 2-0-2 record to advance to the gold medal game. South Fraser TNT captured the bronze medal in the Senior A category with a 3 – 1 win over the Grande Prairie Panthers. 2013-2014 Year in Review 52 The Coquitlam Express captured the franchise’s second Junior A Fred Page Cup with a four (4) game sweep of the Vernon Vipers on April 15, 2014. Coquitlam overcame deficits in each of the first three (3) games and trailed going into the third period of game four (4). Adam Rockwood (Coquitlam) had the overtime winners in game two (2) and the series-winning goal, a short-handed goal in game four (4). Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Photo credit: HHOF-IIHF Images Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images 2013-2014 Year in Review 53 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images BC players (left to right above) Joe Hicketts (Kamloops), Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam), Ryan Gropp (Kamloops) and Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford) helped Canada’s National Men’s U18 Team bring home bronze at the at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey Championship with a 3 – 1 win over Sweden. The Championship was held April 17 – 27, 2014 in Laeenranta and Imatra, Finland. Virtanen finished the tournament with six (6) points, Barzal netted three (3) goals and an assist and Gropp and Hicketts each had two (2) points. 2013-2014 Year in Review 54 The Beaver Valley Nitehawks won the 2014 Keystone Cup with a 5 – 1 win over the Abbotsford Pilots on April 19, 2014. Nitehawks goalie Brett Clark (Grande Prairie, AB) was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, with only four (4) goals against in four (4) games. The team finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0-0 record. This marked the fourth time in five (5) years that a BC team has won the Western Canada Junior B Championship. 2013-2014 Year in Review 55 Team Stars defeated Team Avalanche 4 – 0 in the Championship Game at the Male U16 BC Cup on April 20, 2014 at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm, BC. Tyson Lin (Vancouver) and Tanner Verluis (North Vancouver) each netted a goal for the Stars and Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver) scored twice. The Rockets were down two (2) against the Toronto Nationals heading into the final period, but they climbed back thanks to goals from Linden Hora (Kelowna) and Liam Finlay (Kelowna). With the game tied at two (2), overtime was needed where Hora netted his second of the game to secure the Rockets victory. 2013-2014 Year in Review 57 At the 2014 TELUS Cup awards banquet, two (2) Okanagan Rockets came home with prestigious honors. Liam Finlay (Kelowna) was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player and Tanner Wishnowski (Kelowna) claimed Top Scorer and Top Forward awards, finishing the tournament with 15 points. 2013-2014 Year in Review 58 With a 1-0 win over Team Thunder, Team Inferno won the 2014 Female U18 BC Cup on April 27, 2014 at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm, BC. Ava Keis (Quesnel) scored the lone Championship game goal. Team Furies captured third with a 4 – 0 win over Team Stars. 2013-2014 Year in Review 59 The BC High School Hockey League (BCHSHL) wrapped up the season with three (3) Championship games on May 1, 2014 at Planet Ice in Coquitlam, BC. In the Tier 1 Championship, Terry Fox defeated McMath 3 – 1, Burnsview beat Rockridge 7 – 4 in the Tier 2 Championship and Elgin Park overcame Sir Winston Churchill 7 – 5 in the Tier 3 Championship. 2013-2014 Year in Review 62 BC Hockey official Justin Hull (North Vancouver) was selected as a linesman for the 2014 IIHF Men’s World Championship, May 9 – 25, 2014 in Minsk, Belarus. Hull, a product of Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association, has been officiating for 15 years and is a veteran linesman in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and American Hockey League (AHL). As a Hockey Canada Level Four (4) linesman, he has officiated other IIHF events including the World University Games, World U17 Hockey Challenge, World U18 Championships, World Junior A Challenge and the 2013 World Division One (1) Championships. In addition to these accomplishments, Hull has also worked the Royal Bank Cup, CIS National Championship, multiple WHL Ed Chynoweth Cup finals and the 2010 Memorial Cup. 2013-2014 Year in Review 63 On May 7, 2014, the Major Midget League All-Star team was announced. Pictured above Jakob Henderson (Vancouver North East Chiefs), Dante Fabbro (Vancouver North West Giants), Jordan Henderson (Vancouver North East Chiefs), Matt Bradley (Valley West Hawks), Liam Finlay (Okanagan Rockets) and Tyson Jost (Okanagan Rockets) were named to the team. 2013-2014 Year in Review 64 On May 7, 2014 Valley West Hawks head coach Tom Spencer (Langley) was named 2013-2014 Major Midget League Coach of the Year. Micah Hart (Saanichton) and Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove) (top left to right) attended the National Women’s U18 Team Strength and Conditioning Camp and Kimberley Newell (Burnaby) and Hannah Miller (Vancouver) (bottom left to right) attended the Women’s Development Team Camp. 2013-2014 Year in Review 66 Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images Photo credit: Hockey Canada Images For the second time, the Vernon Vipers hosted the 2014 RBC Cup from May 10 – 18, 2014; the host, then Lakers, won the tournament on home ice in 1990. The Vipers were looking to win the national title for the seventh time in their tenth appearance, extending their own all-time record. Vernon previously won the championship in 1990, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2009 and 2010. Vernon was defeated 6 – 3 by the Yorkton Terriers to advance to the final game. Vipers forward Colton Sparrow (Kelowna) was named Top Scorer and Top Forward at the tournament. 2013-2014 Year in Review 67 A BIG thank you to our members!
