AEM Performance Parts
The AEM/DriverFX.com RWD Civic was developed with two goals in mind;
create the World’s Fastest Sport Compact and use that platform to test AEM
products in the harsh environment of drag racing. In 2003 AEM achieved these
goals by capturing the “World’s Fastest” title and utilizing off-the-shelf AEM
Cam Gears, Fuel Pressure Regulators, Engine Management, C2DI Ignition
Module and Wideband UEGO Controller.
In only its first season, the AEM/DriverFX.com RWD Civic became the
World’s Quickest and Fastest Honda, and World’s Fastest Sport Compact.
AEM Racing’s RWD is only the fifth Sport Compact to join the NHRA’s
200 mph Club, with a best e.t. of 6.90 and a best mph of 207.8, and the FWD
Civic is currently the World’s Quickest and Fastest Front-Wheel-Drive drag car.
In 2004, AEM Racing will compete for the championship in a major
drag racing series, and continue its quest to become not only the Fastest Sport
Compact in the World, but also the Quickest. As AEM continues to lead the
industry in technological innovation, the Drag Civics will serve as test beds,
ensuring that AEM performance products will withstand the harshest racing
and performance environments.

Gauge-Type Wideband UEGO Controller
AEM’s integral Gauge-Type Wideband UEGO Controller is the most accurate, affordable
UEGO controller available. This unit features an LED readout and sweeping LED

“needle” that changes colors as Air/Fuel ratios (AFR) change from lean to rich, and is a
must have item for monitoring AFR on high-performance vehicles. This standard size
gauge fits in most gauge pods and works with any stand-alone engine management

Wideband UEGO Controller
Like its gauge-type counterpart, AEM’s Wideband UEGO Controller is the most
cost effective, accurate UEGO sensor controller available. This unit is available in
single- and dual-channel modes for everything from four-cylinders to V10s, and
can be used with any stand-alone engine management system. Turn to page 18

Multi-Channel C2DI Ignition Module
AEM’s digital Multi-Channel C2DI is the smallest, lightest, most affordable CDI on
the market. AEM’s C2DI is the only unit that utilizes two capacitors, allowing it to
store the energy for two distinct spark events and produce full spark energy for
each individual spark plug including high-rpm V8s, and even rotary engines utilizing
separate leading and trailing ignition maps. This unit is available in four- and eightchannel configurations, works with O.E.M. coil-on-plug or distributed spark systems,
and is ideal for applications that utilize any aftermarket stand-alone engine

BRUTE FORCE For Musclecars
AEM is proud to introduce BRUTE FORCE intakes for popular late model musclecars.
AEM BRUTE FORCE intakes are developed for maximum flow without sacrificing lowand mid-range torque and power. AEM has also significantly expanded its truck and
SUV BRUTE FORCE applications for 2004. Turn to page 14 for application information.
Hybrid Intakes for Engine Swaps
Do your customers have Prelude engines in Civic hatchbacks? AEM has an intake for
you! AEM’s direct-fit Hybrid intake systems are designed for popular engine swaps. Like
every product AEM manufactures, each system is dyno-tested to create more useable
horsepower and torque than any other intake system available. AEM Hybrid intakes are
available in the company’s titanium-look powdercoating only, and are the only intakes
AEM manufactures that are not C.A.R.B. exempt. Applications on page 13.
Factory Training Seminars
AEM’s EMS Training Seminars are open to technicians of qualified tuning shops
only (not open to the public at this time) and are limited to eight attendees per
seminar to ensure one-on-one interaction with AEM EMS engineers. The training
seminars are two days long, with the second day focusing on the dyno performing
hands-on tuning. Topics covered include how to successfully install and tune an
AEM EMS including tuning for boost, fuel, closed-loop AFR, cold startup and
more. Seminars are free of charge; however, attendees are responsible for their
own travel and accommodations. Upon completion of the seminar, attendees are
given a certificate of completion and put on AEM’s referral list of factory-trained
tuners in the sales department and on the company’s website. Call (310) 484-2322

systems are dyno-proven to create more useable power than any other system of their kind.
Every AEM Cold Air induction system features an individually tuned inlet pipe and relocates the

Once AEM designs a prototype intake system, there are several tools it uses to ensure that the same design
that fit perfectly during development makes it into an AEM Induction System box. One of these tools creates
a digital blueprint of the prototype that allows us to electronically transfer the exact product dimensions to
one of our computerized CNC mandrel benders. In addition to speeding up the production process, this tool
ensures that your AEM intake will fit perfectly every time, on every car.

V2 Induction Systems
Outperforms EVERY Induction System Including our own Cold Air!
On a dyno graph, the area under the powerband (or curve) represents the amount of effort that an engine is producing.
The larger the overall area under the curve, the more power your engine is making. The AEM V2 utilizes a dual chamber (using
two different diameters and lengths of piping) that creates multiple frequency sound waves to produce the largest area under
the curve of any intake system on the market. These sound waves help charge the cylinders with more air throughout the entire
rpm range and is what enables the V2 to outperform even our own Cold Air systems.
We have found that inlet length plays a vital role in the power production of V2 systems and not all V2 induction systems
relocate the filter outside of the engine compartment. In these cases, extensive temperature testing was performed to locate the
filter in the coolest area of the engine compartment to achieve the lowest inlet temperatures possible (see our Temperature
Testing Procedures on Pg 13).

DYNO TESTING
AEM has established and published consistent dyno testing procedures for its products. We do our testing the same way every time,
so that when you do your own test you will get the same results. Our Mustang dynamometer uses a real-time data acquisition
program for ambient temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity, eliminating the chance of wrong correction factors
being applied to dyno results. Our dyno room is climate controlled for consistency and so that we can perform both “hot” and
“cold” testing. In addition to our testing procedures (on pages 12 and 13), we only publish results for vehicles with engines that
have exceeded the minimum manufacturer break-in period, and test on multiple vehicles to further ensure consistency.

Air Bypass Valve
Waterproof Your Cold Air System
AEM’s patented Air Bypass Valve virtually eliminates the chance of hydro-lock in
the event the filter of your AEM Cold Air induction system becomes submerged in
water. The valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe and shuts down
induction at the filter when it becomes submerged, rerouting air through its external
diaphragm to keep water out and air flowing in. The AEM Air Bypass Valve is C.A.R.B.
exempt on AEM Cold Air induction systems only and is NOT for use on forced
induction vehicles. Patent # 6,394,128.

Short Ram Induction Systems
Unbeatable Under the Hood
In most cases, AEM Short Ram induction systems are developed as an economical
alternative to our Cold Air systems. However, during the development phase we have
tested certain applications that respond favorably to shorter inlet lengths over our longer
Cold Air designs. For these applications (denoted with an asterisk on the application chart),
we offer a Short Ram system only. We perform extensive temperature testing to locate the
filter in the coolest area of the engine compartment. This allows our Short Ram systems to
achieve the lowest inlet temperatures possible. Please refer to the sidebar on our
temperature testing procedures on page 13 for more information.

AEM Dyno Testing Procedures
When we perform dyno testing, we monitor engine temperatures and inlet air temperatures to achieve consistent data. We DO NOT move the vehicle off of
the dyno once it is strapped down, and install the performance part we are testing with the car still strapped to the dyno once we have established a baseline
number. We take baseline and power runs, and then average the three most consistent runs. Any runs that are abnormally high or low are eliminated so that
the results we gain are as accurate as possible. The data from the three runs are then entered into a spreadsheet and a graph of the power gains is plotted,
versus and average baseline graph using the same method. Furthermore, all numbers are corrected to SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards for
barometric pressure, ambient air temperature and relative humidity per the program supplied with the dynamometer we use for testing.

AEM Temperature Testing Procedures
We use thermocouples and an ECU scanning tool to monitor and record temperatures along the inlet path, under the hood, and ambient. The
scan tool is used to monitor inlet air temps at the IAT sensor, coolant temps at the CLT sensor, vehicle speed and basically everything else the ECU
sees from the factory sensors to determine which fuel and spark calibrations it should use. Once the vehicle is at normal operating temperature,
it is subjected to a battery of driving simulations and all of the data from the thermocouples and scan tool is recorded. Through the acquisition
of this information, we are able to replicate these conditions during our dyno testing to produce a realistic average power gain.

BRUTE FORCE Bullies the Competition
AEM BRUTE FORCE intakes are designed for popular trucks, SUVs and musclecars,
and are dyno-tested to create more torque and horsepower than any other intake for
large displacement engines. At AEM, our mechanical engineers emphasize tuning the
resonance properties of the inlet pipe to help carry more air to the intake valves. We
use aluminum piping for this, because plastic absorbs some of the sound energy we
manipulate to create power, and mild steel is heavy and can rust. We route our
plumbing so that the filter draws air from the safest and coolest location, and provide
a stainless-steel heat shield to shroud the filter from engine heat and road dirt. We
emphasize maximum flow without sacrificing low-end torque, and design our filters
to meet SAE filtration standards. Every BRUTE FORCE intake we make is submitted to
C.A.R.B. for 50-state exemption, and we guarantee them for life.

Q: What is the difference in heat absorption between aluminum, steel and plastic?
A: The issue of heat absorption with an intake system has a degree of validity, however we have found that too much emphasis is placed on
material selection, instead of the real issue of tuning the system. Regardless of the material used, the thermal conductivity of the duct material has
little effect on engine power. The rate at which air travels through the inlet path under open throttle, when one is asking the engine for maximum
power, negates the effect of material heat soak, regardless of the material. We limit our use of plastic because this material absorbs some of the
sound energy we work to create in the inlet duct. We use aluminum to eliminate any chance of the system rusting, and it's lighter than steel.

A: AEM performs extensive dynamometer testing during the R&D phase to ensure that every system outperforms the
competition. This includes testing each system with prototype Power Spacer designs. In most cases, we have found that adding a
Power Spacer does not increase performance. Therefore, we do not unnecessarily add this component. In cases where a Power
Spacer does improve performance, we automatically include it in the BRUTE FORCE Intake system.

AEM's Plug & Play Engine Management System (EMS) plugs directly into a
vehicle's factory ECU harness and requires no additional wiring or hardware.

Sensors
AEM offers several sensor kits for vehicles that require additional outputs and/or upgraded

A wideband UEGO sensor controller accurately monitors Air/Fuel ratios (AFR) during the tuning process to prevent a lean
fuel mixture, which could lead to engine damage. AEM's Wideband UEGO Controller is available in single- and dual-channel
modes for everything from four-cylinders to V10s, and is the most affordable UEGO sensor controller available. This unit

AEM’s Wideband UEGO Controller is also available in
a gauge and includes all of the features found in our
standard Wideband UEGO unit. This includes a 0-5v
output signal for feedback control to your ECU. AEM’s
Gauge-Type Wideband UEGO Controller includes an
LED readout and sweeping LED “needle” that changes
colors as AFR changes from lean to rich. The unit’s
52mm (2-1/16”) gauge housing fits in most gauge pods
and can be remotely mounted virtually anywhere.

The AEM/DriverFX.com Civic uses an off-the-shelf AEM Twin-Channel Wideband UEGO Controller
(Part # 30-2300) to monitor and control AFR. AEM Racing does this by utilizing the unit’s 5v output
signal for feedback control to the AEM EMS, although all of AEM’s UEGO sensor controllers work
with any stand-alone engine management system. That said, we highly recommend our EMS.

Ignition Modules
The Lightest, Smallest, Most Powerful CDI
AEM’s digital Multi-Channel C2DI is the lightest, smallest and most cost effective ignition module
on the market. This unit is available in four- and eight-channel configurations, works with O.E.M.
coil-on-plug and distributed spark systems, and is ideal for applications that utilize aftermarket
stand-alone engine management systems.
Our C2DI module is the only capacitive discharge ignition system available with
dual capacitors. This enables the AEM C2DI to produce more spark energy and spark
voltage per spark than any other available CDI unit. AEM’s exclusive Twin-Cap
technology stores the energy for two distinct spark events and allows for full
spark energy for each individual sparkplug, including high-rpm V8s, and
even on rotary engines utilizing separate leading and
trailing ignition maps.

THE ELECTRONICS TEST BENCH
The AEM Electronics Test Bench has the capability of testing both fuel components and ignition
components. AEM’s resident injector guru (“Flowmaster” Jeremy Negen) uses the EMS test bench
to determine battery offsets of OEM and popular aftermarket injectors. This data is continually
added to the EMS injector library, which currently includes over 50 different injectors.

AEM High Volume Fuel Rails feature a 1/2-inch fuel bore, which is capable of flowing enough fuel to support applications up to
1,000 horsepower. This large bore also dampens back pulses created by larger injectors and works perfectly with stock injector sizes. An
additional 1/8th NTP port is included to accommodate a nitrous set up or fuel pressure gauge. A custom fuel line fitting is included for
the factory fuel line, and the ends of each rail are pre tapped to accept -6 or -8 AN fittings for users with custom fuel lines.

Big Rotor Brake Systems
The Most Affordable Big Rotor System
on the Market
AEM O.E. caliper Big Rotor brake systems are the most affordable Big Rotor brake
upgrade on the market. Our Big Rotor brake systems relocate the factory caliper via
patented caliper relocation brackets that change the moment arm for increased brake
torque, which helps reduce stopping distances by an average of 33 percent. Our oversized
rotors are approximately 20 percent larger than O.E. rotors and have an extended thermal
capacity that resists fade. AEM will have two rotor designs for 2004: Its original two-piece
design with billet-aluminum hats, and a one-piece design in limited quantities that
is available slotted and in Carbon Black (BL) only. Please refer to the application
chart for availability.

For customers who require additional clamping power, AEM offers a Four-Piston Caliper Big
Rotor upgrade for select applications. This upgrade utilizes a durable mono-block Brembo
caliper design that is pre-loaded with high performance Porsche brake pads and includes
all of the features found in our Big Rotor brake system.

Brake Conversion System
AEM's Rear Disc Brake Conversion System is the only 100 percent bolt-on, drum-to-disc
conversion system on the market for Hondas. This system includes AEM and Honda O.E
components, a complete premium hardware kit and comprehensive instructions, and is a
cost effective alternative to swapping the rear end of a Civic to achieve four-wheel discs.
Q: Because AEM Big Rotors are high performance rotors, does that mean their life expectancy will be shorter?
A: AEM Big Rotors should last at least as long as O.E. rotors under normal and even spirited street driving conditions. However, in a
racing environment their life expectancy is the same as an O.E. rotor used in race conditions.

Q: How can I resurface AEM Big Rotors?
A: For the rotors that are bolted to an aluminum hat the best way to resurface the rotors is to grind both sides using a double
disk or Blanchard grinder. If that is not available, then use a standard brake lathe. For the AEM one piece rotors they can be ground
or resurfaced on a standard brake rotor lathe or a surface grinder. We have used flywheel grinders for the resurfacing job as well.

Q: What’s so special about the AEM brake pad compound?
A: They are made of a Kevlar Ceramic compound that resists fading under severe use. The compound does not emit a corrosive metallic
material like other performance pads, so the finish on the wheels and surrounding body work is less likely to be damaged by brake dust.
Because they do not use as much metal as many performance pads, the rotors last longer than rotors used with high metallic content pads.
