EXHIBITION WITH POLISH ARTISTS
FROM STAROGARD - 6 - 29 June 2014
Introductory text by Zofia Sumczynska, Galeria Autorska 24B
“The Kingdom of Denmark became known to me many years ago. Already as a child I became acquainted
with the country at the time my big brother met a blond girl with the magic name of Guldborg, fell in love
with her and started a family. My first visit to the country was not without its problems with the travel
away from the drab, communist reality into a more colorful world – and the taste of Anton Berg’s
chocolate. It was overwhelming. Today Poland is no longer drab, and my Danish family has grown with a
new generation. I have learned to know Denmark as a country with a rich artistic tradition and I have come
to know its citizens as appreciative of art and good workmanship. This knowledge is the source of my desire
to present my artistic work exactly in Denmark. I have asked my brother Roman Sumczinsky for his help.
Not least due to his assistance Hillerød was twinned with Starogard Gdanski, where we live, many years
ago. That was the birth of this present broader initiative.
The exhibition in Hillerød of works by artists from Starogard was realized through an invitation from
Hillerød Art Society. My gallery “Galeria Autorska 24B” was invited to organize the entire event from the
Polish end. We regard it as a sort of grassroots initiative, which will assist in promoting the most honest and
authentic needs to show art, created of artists of varying backgrounds, both those with an exam from the
art academy, as well as the amateurs, and those who work on art in the provinces far away from the
cultural centers in the large cities. We have succeeded in gathering 19 artists for the exhibition. All of them
have the understanding that provinces are an imaginary place in the head rather than a spot on a map. To
all of us it will always be our fatherland where we attempt to the best of our ability and with our own
building blocks to contribute to the common project, our culture. It is a pleasure for us to be able to show
our work in the wider world, an opportunity which we hope will further our development and enjoyment
through the forming of new contacts. As far as Hillerød is concerned it is also a fine occasion to renew the
relations between our two towns. A word of thanks is due to the chairman of Hillerød Art Society, Børge
Jensen, and to coordinator Lene Henrichsen, with whom I have had the pleasure to correspond.
Normally grassroots initiatives of this magnitude are doomed beforehand primarily due to lack of funds.
Therefore we wish to express our gratitude to the city-rule of Starogard, to our mayor Mr. Edmund
Stachowicz and our deputy mayor Ms. Iwona Lewandowska for their interest in this initiative and their
financial and logistical support. Without their assistance this exhibition would not have been possible. We
are also grateful for the contribution from the Polish Embassy in Copenhagen. Finally, on behalf of myself
and all the exhibiting artists, a heartfelt thank you to all who have made it possible to show our works at
Annaborg next to Frederiksborg Castle. It is a great honour for us.”

FROM HILLERØD’S POLISH
TWIN TOWN STAROGARD

Christopher Bagorski/ Krzysztof Bagorski
was born in Gdańsk in 1974. In 1994 he
graduated from the Art Secondary School in
Gdynia. From the very beginning portraits
were his favorite subject. Inspired by
Witkacy’s artistic work - one of Poland’s
greatest artist at the beginning of the 20th
century - he started adopting a pastel
technique. He is also a landscaper on pastels
and oil paintings. His works are to be found in
many private collections in Poland and in
Europe. He has also participated in numerous
both individual and group exhibitions in
Poland.
Weronika Wróbel
Was born in 1974 in Gdynia, Poland and graduated from
the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 2001.
Sculptor-ceramist. She expresses herself also in media like:
drawings, photography, video & long-distance outdoor
projects.
Adam Jakub Haras
Was born in 1966 in Starogard Gdański. He
graduatedfrom the Fine Arts Department at
the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
In 1994 he received university diploma under
Krzysztof Pituła tutelage. Oil and acrylic
painter, specialized in graphic - especially
drypoint technique. Author black – and- white
photographs. Since 1992 working for the "A"
Gallery in Centre of Culture and Art in
Starogard Gdański. Since 2003 he has been
the curator of the “A” Gallery. Adam Haras
has created more than a dozen well-known
series of works. His works of art were shown
during national as well as international
exhibitions. He lives in Starogard Gdański.
Magdalena Haras
Was born in Gdańsk. Comes from a family with living
traditions of art. In 1995 graduated from the The Academy
of Visual Art in Poznań – Conservation Study. She was
studing at Fine Arts Department at the Nicolaus Copernicus
University in Toruń. In 1997 she received university
diploma under prof. John Pręgowski tutelage. Since 1997
she leads art and workshop classes. She is famous for her
artistic commitment in individual and collective
exhibitions. Her works of art are created in both oil and dry
pastel painting. She was honored by President of Starogard
Gdański with artistic scholarship in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
In 2012 she was awarded the IX International Festival of
Art of Book.
Krystyna Jacuk
was born and lives in Kociewie. Has a
technical education. Painting and photography
is her passion. She paints in oil and acrylic,
mainly landscapes and flowers. Also she
makes collages and assemblages. She has
reached several individual and collective
exhibitions.
Martyna Lorbiecka
was born in 1995.
Matriculated this year. Wishes to continue her education as
an interior designer/architect at the Academy of Art in
Gdansk.
Irena Zagórska political scientist - a sociologist, therapist,
painter in love with Kociewie in Poland. In
the 90's, she edited the magazine "Weekly
Starogard" cultural magazine SCK. Developed
the album "Former Starogard".
Currently working with people with
disabilities. She paints the landscape of
Kociewie, portraits, flowers and still life.
Exhibitions of works in Gallery A, N Gallery,

the Castle in Skarszewy, Kaliska, in Music
Yard in Godziszewo, Poland
Marcin Bober, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in
Gdansk, painter and multimedia artist. His work focuses on
the problems of modern man.
The cycle "Pożegnania"(Valedictons) speaks about the
issue of changes in human life, about fear in random
situations, about difficult time of transition and he is trying
to make psychological analysis of the portrayed persons.
Józef Olszynka was born on 2 March 1957,
in Starogard Gdański, in the north of Poland,
the city where he lives and works. He
graduated in pedagogy. He is working for the
Starogard Cultural Centre and has a
significant impact on shaping cultural life of
our town. Apart from painting, he acts also as
a pedagogue, dealing with fine art workshops,
classes in drawing and painting.
He became a widely recognized artist for his
watercolours, of which unique beauty, light
and sophisticated selection of colours together
with delicacy and subtlely drawn silhouettes
turned them into masterpieces. Favourite
themes of his works are town sceneries and
rural landscape.
For the series of his watercolour, depicting
and promoting invaluable beauty of Kociewie
Region, he was honourably awarded by
County Authorities.
JOLANTA STEPPUN
She was born and has been living in Starogard Gdański.
Since her childhood she has been fascinated with the
painting, poetry and the handicraft. Her 'adventures' with
the canvas and oil paint began in September 2009.
Participant in the plein air painting. Member of Gdańsk
Company of Enthusiasts of the Art (Gdańskie Towarzystwo
Miłośników
Sztuki).
She made her debut in 2012 with the volume 'Sketches
from the second edge' (“Szkice z drugiego brzegu”). She is
a winner of 'Kociewski of Feather’ 2012 (“Kociewskie
Pióro” 2012) in the field of literature. She was a scholar of
the mayor of Starogard Gdański in 2013.
Michał Majewski
was born in 1954. After his graduation from
the Mechanics Department of the Maritime
Academy in Gdynia, he spent about 10 years
as a marine engineer onboard various ships,
working for Polish Ocean Lines and
Chipolbrok.
Having left his life as a sailor behind, he
changed his hobby - wood carving - into a
profession. Since then, he has been involved
in woodcraft, artistic carpentry, renovation or
reproduction of antique furniture, and pretty
much everything else connected with wood.
He also does photography and runs a blog. His
writing debut featured in a local magazine,
Prowincja, in 2013.
Teresa Trzewik – painting.
The inspiration for the artist is the Kociewian countryside.
Rural landscape, open spaces, ploughed furrows in the soil,
the skylines of trees, misty lakes, tree branches swaying in
the wind, or silence on a lane covered with snow - these are
sufficient reasons to grab a brush and start painting. The
artist's works have been presented at individual exhibitions.
She organizes annual plein art workshops in the village of
Ciecholewy.
Zofia Sumczyńska
was born in 1965. She graduated from the
Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań in 1994. She
is a full-time working artist. Her favourite
media are oil, acrylics and watercolours. In
2001 Zofia became involved in the world of
stained glass and since then has created a
great number of pieces using the Tiffany
technique. Her works range from monumental
church stained windows to little pieces of
ornamental stained glass and lamps.
In the years 2011, 2012 and 2014 she received
scholarships from the Mayor of Starogard
Gdański.
At the end of 2012, she dedicated part of her
house to opening an art gallery called Galeria
Autorska 24B. The gallery displays and sells
her art and the works of other artists. It is also
the venue of Zofia's art workshops for
children, teenagers and adults.
Dariusz Syrkowski
graduated from the State College of Fine Arts (PWSSP) in
1992, diploma under Prof. M. Olszewski, with an aneexe of
prints in Prof. W. Dembski's atelier.
Now, he works at the Academy of Fine Art in Gdańsk.
THE MYSTERY OF DESPAIR AND HOPE

Passing away, like a mericiless and inevitable symbol of
lost orgins is, it seems a common denominator of Dariusz
Syrkowski's prints, as the artists directs his attention to the
past. Things alredy gone become the most important capital
for him . Firmly engraved in the present - constant, coexistent. and surprisingly up-dated, they are elevated to the
rank of the curcial material for imagination.
Andrzej Venulet
graduated from the Medical School in Lodz
(Poland). Later, for many years he has been
working as a psychiatrist in Poland, UK and
South Africa. His interests in Art, especially
paintings, go back to his childhood and
influence of his parents. Life in Southern
Africa has had strong impact on both themes
and colours in his oil works. He has had
several individual and collective exhibitions in
UK, RSA, Switzerland and Poland, where he
currently lives and works.
Barbara Wdziękońska
During the years 1979-1984 she studied at the Nicolaus
Copernicus University in Toruń, the Faculty of Fine Arts.
In 1985 she moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk,
where she was granted a Master of Fine Arts degree. She is
currently working as a Fine Arts teacher. Her works are a
wide variety of oil painting, collage and pastel with her
favourite themes being female figures, flowers and
landscapes.
PAWEL WYBORSKI
Born in Starogard Gdanski (1975).
Specializes in oil painting, particularly the
multi layered technique. Owner of
Klubokawiarnia Szafa, an artcafe in Starogard
Gdanski.
He has participated in solo and group
exhibitions and art fairs in various countries
in Europe and the USA. Pictures in private
collections worldwide.
Dominik Rebelka
was born 1954 in Starogard Gd. Poland.
He obtained his Masters Degree with honours from the
Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk.
His artworks have been exhibited in Poland, France,
Germany, New York, USA and Canada.
He lives and works in Starogard Gd.
His artistic activity focuses on printmaking and painting.
Marek Zagórski
Sculptor, regionalist, cultural animator. He
organized several Kociewie Plein-Air
Painting and Sculpture in Twardy Dół and
Borzechowo in Poland, integrating and
regional professional artists representing a
variety of techniques - graphics, painting,
sculpture, drawing, fabric. It was a promotion
of the region and the exchange of experience
workshops.
For over 30 yearshe has made sculptures. His
works are with collectors around the world.
Specializes sowing sacred art. In dozens of
Polish churches are his sculptures, passions,
shrines, altars, stations of the cross, the
mysteries of the Rosary, confessionals. - He
lives and works in Kociewie, Poland. Folklore
of this region is particularly precious to him.
