President’s Message
! When I started thinking about what subjects I would use for my
letters in the Fall through the Winter, I decided to speak to
something that might be thoughtful and helpful. As you may recall,
the September letter dealt with ‘Inspiration’, followed by
‘Imagination’ in November. For February, ‘Intuition’ will be our last
subject. I chose these topics because by understanding each topic we
can understand how our work develops. Without this
understanding, we might just flounder and not be able to fully
utilize the strong artistic power we really have. !
! So much of our time in the studio is devoted to making pieces for
other people and what we think they might like. Or maybe we focus
on our materials, or a series, etc. Most of us don’t pause and really
think about the process of being of intuitive. And yet you might use
intuition more than you think. !
! Intuition is the process of knowing things to a high degree of
certainty without conscious reasoning. It is that ‘gut feeling’ you
have about a situation. Following are some brilliant thoughts about
intuition: !
•! “The only real valuable thing is intuition” – Albert Einstein!
•! “We spent (almost none) of our time studying plans for the
mission and (almost all of our time) learning how to react intuitively
to the entire if’s.” - Unknown Astronaut !
•! “Intellect confuses intuition” – Piet Mondrian !
! I realized over 40 years ago that I should always listen to my gut
feelings (intuition). My husband and I, along with another couple,
rented two very small rubber rafts for a ride down what we thought
would be a slow moving Yakima River. Within the first five minutes,
my husband’s and my raft hit a snag and flipped over. !
! ! !
!
!
!
!
(continued on page 2)!
The power of intuitive understanding will protect
you from harm until the end of your days.
—Lao Tzu
The November Catch the Challenge winner for the theme “Joyful” was
Dawn Westmoreland. Criteria included theme interpretation, overall good
design, cohesiveness, connection of lights and darks, and place of rest.

!
(continued from page 1)!
Everything was saved except the beer, one
paddle, one shoe and a pair of sunglasses.
After that, the trip downstream was good
until we came upon a waterfall shooting
into the middle of the river. Our friend
Larry had the idea of riding the rafts along
the edge of the bank, holding onto the
vegetation. I took one look and said no—
MY intuition was working hard by this
time. I soon convinced my husband and
Larry’s friend to get out of the water walk
alongside the river past the waterfall. But
Larry wanted to “do his thing” and took
off by himself in one of the rafts. We
expected him to pop out of the river right
away and meet us. When he didn’t show
after 15 minutes or so, our concern became
feverish, as we couldn’t see the river
through the brush. Then suddenly we saw
him walking towards us without the raft,
and looking drenched. He told us the raft
was still in the river going around in a
whirlpool beneath the waterfall, along
with some logs stuck there as well. He said
that he intuitively felt the only way he
could get out was by diving deep down to
the bottom of the river, and letting the
underwater current carry him
downstream. He trusted his intuition. And
had I not trusted MY intuition, we could
have died, because we were not strong
swimmers as Larry was. !
! So, that experience brings to mind some
additional thoughts about the value of
intuition: !
•! “Intuition is about trusting and not
thinking; the thinking part comes later.” Lisa Pressman !
•! “Intuition is the essence of the whole
creative process. If art isn’t about feelings,
then what is its purpose? Everything starts
with intuition. – Kay Ruffini!

February 2014 Presentation
Color – The Journey
by Marguerite Langlois
! How have humans
experienced and made color?
The journey goes back at least
100,000 years. We’ll look briefly
at that history, and then trace
another journey, the story of
how each of the six basic
colors were discovered and
made. Along the way, we’ll
note how color became part of
paper as well, with paper an
art medium in itself.
My own art centers on
natural forms. Working from
nature has been my “first
love” as long as I can
remember. I was first
especially attracted to
botanical drawing and
landscape, and then
increasingly interested in
further work with natural and
M.Langlois, Wind, Water,
organic forms. For several
years now, I have also been
working with monoprints, including collage and mixedmedia techniques. The textural and layered richness these
provide expresses strongly the layers of meaning and
energy I experience in the natural forms of the universe.

Hazards in the Arts,” discussing the toxic hazards that artists
face every day. He discussed the variety of toxic chemicals
that artists are exposed to when using solvents, adhesives,
corrosives, pigments, etc. He provided detailed information
in several handouts for guidance in using these materials

Nicky Dally (1936–2013)
NWCS collage artist and former Board member Nicky Dally passed away
November 29, 2013. Tis Huberth, Eunice Smith, and Kathy Parker
represented NWCS friends. Nicky was born September 24, 1936 in Antwerp
Belgium and she first worked as a flight attendant with Belgian Sabena Airlines,
though her preferred choice would have been attending art school. The funeral
service was at the Evergreen Washelli Chapel, December 14. At the small but
very meaningful gathering, her two daughters spoke at length about her
passion for art, doing a wonderful job of recounting her life and influence. They
also had slide show photos and samples of Nicky’s embroidery, knitting, and
collages on view. She will be missed. !
