‘Connections Within’ presents the works of three
contemporary artists based in Melbourne: Pimpisa
Tinpalit, Natcha Sathientavorn and Mami Yamanaka.
The artworks are inspired by the artists’ life
experiences, cultural heritage and connections
with nature—exploring its shapes, patterns and forms.
Utilising different techniques and mediums, the artists
create new and evocative visual imaginaries which
contrast between large-scale figurative sculptures
and delicate drawings of intricate patterns.

Following the international success of Shout:
Contemporary Indonesian Art held at Museo d’Arte
Contemporanea di Roma in 2014, curated by Bryan
Collie and Santy Saptari, Multicultural Arts Victoria
and MiFA are presenting SHOUT! 2015. The exhibition
spans three locations and showcases extraordinary
Indonesian contemporary art from Yogyakarta and
Bandung including paintings and soft sculpture to
inflatables and largescale installations.
A view into Cambodia’s complex social and political
history, past to present, through the lens of memory,
ghostly spaces, migration and reclamation, from the
perspectives of two Australian artists. Visual artist
Minela Krupic and video artist Alesh Macak present
their observations of Cambodia’s social environment
through the research findings and collaboration with
KAMA Centre and SASA BASSAC made possible
through the VCA and MCM Professional Pathways
program supported by Creative Victoria.

From magical crocheted hovering underwater
scenes to iconic plush toys, Yogjakarta artist Mulyana
(The Mogus) is a master of monsters and otherworldly
landscapes. He and his “Cloud Coral” are coming
to Melbourne and this is your opportunity to share
stories, learn the craft of crochet, knitting and plush
toy making as you create your own alter ego.

Victory rolls, back seams and red lipstick will be
appropriate attire for this special evening at the
iconic Summer Night Market. Described as a “time
travelling girl group that sings ’50s-’60s American
and Korean pop music,” The Barberettes fuse covers
of iconic doo-wop hits with original retro-inspired
compositions. Comprising Shinae An Wheeler,
Grace Kim and Sohee Park, The Barberettes have
toured across Europe and the USA, including a
performance at SXSW in 2015. These sweet sweet
harmonies direct from Seoul are not to be missed!

Traces of Transformation presents fresh, spontaneous
and innovative performance works around the theme
of ‘ecstasis’ by 17 local and international independent
artists. Developed by Creative Director Tony Yap, the
diverse works are inspired by each artist’s personal
narratives, interdisciplinary art practice and mentorship.
Spanning three hours and four sites, this program
offers audiences an opportunity to engage with unique
contemporary site-specific performance. Performance
artists include Tony Yap, Victoria Chiu, Nakarin Jaikla,
Agus Riyanto, Agung Gunawan, Brendan O’Connor,
Gretel Taylor, Yoka Jones, Reuben Lewis, Rodrigo
Calderon, Kathleen Gonzalez, Adam Forbes, Luca
Romani, Takashi Takiguchi and Jessi Lewis; and music
by Ma Haiping and Mindy Meng Wang.
Microcosm – a cry of pain and rage from nature,
wailing at environmental destruction, greed,
displacement and consumerism. For 18 years,
Indonesian performance collective Mainteater has
been collaborating across Australia and Indonesia.
Microcosm will see Mainteater artists, including
Bandung based actress Heliana Sinaga, and
Melbourne locals Jodee Mundy and Sandra Fiona
Long, bring to life some of the powerful poems
from cult figure Godi Suwarna’s epic work Urat
Jagat (Veins of the Universe). An intimate, short,
and intense chorus of voice, sound and image.

Over four days and thirteen venues, the third edition
of Mapping Melbourne creates new perspectives,
new possibilities and new expressions through
an intercultural, multi-art form event in the heart
of Melbourne. Exhibiting and performing at some
of Melbourne’s most iconic institutions, the festival
profiles established and emerging artists from
across Australia, China, Indonesia, South Korea,
Malaysia, India, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Join us for a special preview into the Festival in this
night of surprises as we launch this year’s program
and celebrate the opening of SHOUT! 2015.
The evening will include performance, live art
interactions, music and dance featuring artists
Erika Ernawan, Nakarin Jaikla, The Barbarettes,
My Le Thi, Minh Phan, Khue Nguyen, Mindy Meng

Every year millions of tiny travellers fill the skies,
migrating north for the winter and returning south
for our summer. These travellers, that inspired the
20 artists in the international art project, The Flyway
Print Exchange, are our migratory shore birds, and
the 29,000 km circuit they fly annually is called the
East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Australia is one
of 23 countries linked by the Flyway.
Visitors are also invited to add to Par Avian, an
installation of messages for all travellers along
the Flyway, whether they travel for fun, necessity,
or to find a home in the sun.

Celebrating the beauty, complexities and contrasts
of femininity is Luminous Lunas; an innovative series
of site-specific performances, featuring abstract
visual poetry, stories and myths about the Luna (moon),
directed by Yumi Umiumare. Pop-up installations
in different inner-city locations encourage surreal,
provocative and fun audience experiences.
The performances feature Sophia Constantine,
Suhasini Seelin, Jennifer Tran and Yumi Umiumare
with music by Dan West and set and costume
design by Jennifer Tran.

My Le Thi, Minh Phan and Khue Nguyen converge
in a ritual of personal and cultural exchange through
the metaphoric use of colour and live art upon the
40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
This forms part of the artists’ exhibition at Steps
Gallery, Carlton (9-16 Dec).
There will be plenty of creative mayhem
as Australia-East Timor arts collective,
Animatism unleash their eclectic samples
in a live, audio visual explosion of colour
and music. Other featured artists will include
the “Son of Shanghai techno” Ma Haiping,
sought after Producer DJ Mangohig (Sietta
and Damn Moroda) and multi-instrumentalist/
electronic artist Benji Miu. Plus, be a part of
the launch of a new music video collaboration
between experimental music duo AIYA
(Felicity Yang and Ayten Ahmet), dancers
Travers Ross and Yukino McHugh and creative
film maker Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore.
