LENT
A moment with
Mernie...
The season of Lent is upon us early this year. The days have started to lengthen, despite the fact that it seems too
early to envision signs of new life springing forth. It is a good time for us to take stock and do some spiritual house
cleaning. It is the perfect opportunity to clear out the distractions and clutter in our lives and make room for the
Holy Spirit. For just as our homes need freshening up on a regular basis, so too, do we on our walk with the Lord.
As we journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter, we begin with the reminder of our broken humanity: “…you are
dust and to dust you shall return” (Gen 3:19). The word is clear: our very being is reliant upon God. It is God who
breathed into the dust to enliven us and God whose creating work sustains us, even when sin and death try to
overcome us.
Lent is the season when the truth of the resurrection unfolds before our eyes. We remember the cleansing power
of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We hear the promise that although our mortal bodies do return to dust, Christ’s
victory frees us from death and sin through eternal life. We anticipate how the light of Christ overcomes the
darkness, and we have hope.
I invite you this season to do some spiritual house cleaning—acknowledge and confess the choices that distance
you from God. Clear out space for the work of the Spirit, and embrace the fact that you have been created, loved,
forgiven, and redeemed through the unmerited favor of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May you with greater abundance be refreshed and renewed by God’s grace.
In Christ,
Mernie
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
On weekdays Calvary UMC will follow the schedule posted by Anne Arundel Community College. If the
church is closed on a weekday, evening activities are also cancelled. In the event that the weather
changes dramatically during that day, afternoon and/or evening activities may occur at the discretion
of the Senior Pastor. Such an exception will be announced by 12 Noon that day on the church website, Facebook,
and the church phone answering machine. On weekends, if worship and activities are cancelled due to weather, you
can find information at the following places: the church website, www.calumc.org; the church office, 410-268-1776;
and radio station WNAV - 1430 AM and 99.9 FM. The radio station will report information as it fits their programming
so you may want to try the church website and phone system first.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE BISHOP
APPOINTMENT OF NEW SENIOR PASTOR, effective July 1, 2016
Bishop Marcus Matthews has appointed Reverend Meredith Wilkins-Arnold as
the new pastor of Calvary Church, beginning July 1, 2016. As a United Methodist Church, we are part of an appointment system. Our congregation’s Staff
Parish Relations Ministry Team met with the district superintendent to identify
our congregation’s needs and the needed skills in a new pastor, and also met
with her to get to know her and to ask questions.
She is an ordained elder and is coming to us from Solomons United Methodist
Church in Solomons, Maryland. She is married and has 4 children, ages 7 to
21. Her husband is an engineer working at Patuxent Naval Air Station. She has
been a pastor for ~20 years. Reverend Wilkins-Arnold is a caring, enthusiastic
minister who focuses on building relationships with all members of the staff
and congregation, and loves preaching. She will emphasize spiritual growth as
well as addressing financial challenges. Indeed she is completing a special
training program on dealing with financial challenges and has already implemented most of what she learned at her current church. She believes in open
lines of communication and team building, wants to make maximum utilization
of volunteers, and is looking forward to meeting all the members of the
Calvary family. She brings lots of energy to this appointment.

ATTIC TREASURES
It is that time of year again to clear out your attics and garages and donate your treasures to UMW’s annual Attic
Treasures Sale on March 12, 2016, between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Volunteers are needed on Thursday, March 10 and
Friday, March 11 to assist in setup for the sale (sorting, displaying and pricing). On sale day, Saturday, March 12, we
will need help with the sale as well as clean up afterwards. Donations may be dropped off at the Fellowship Hall on
that Thursday and Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. We gratefully accept household goods, furniture, pictures,
books, linens, etc. Please do not bring exercise equipment, computers, or televisions. We love to have purses, jewelry,
and hats. All the proceeds from this sale help fund programs for women and children in need.
To donate your time, please contact Pam Halliwell at 410-533-6570 or [email protected].
This is a worthwhile project and a great way to become involved in our church!

MUSIC & ARTS
HOLY WEEK MUSIC is always special at Calvary. This year the choirs will lead us in a concert service
on Good Friday in the popular cantata, The Seven Last Words of Christ, by Theodore Dubois. This
cantata hasn't been heard here in number of years, and will be on Friday, March 25, at
7:30 p.m. Easter will again be a glorious array of services with the choirs, organ, and professional
brass at the traditional services, and the Praise Team leading us at the contemporary service. The
music at the sunrise service will be led by our own Calvary Brass at the WW2 Memorial. (Dress
warmly.)
A/V NEWS: Our A/V team is growing as we are training additional people to help run the cameras
and Power Point presentations. If you'd like to receive training, please contact Stan Livengood
([email protected]) or David Chipkin ([email protected]) to set up a training session. David Chipkin also has a sign-up web page to schedule services once you are trained.
CALVARY CONCERT SERIES: We're working on getting the Benfield Brass scheduled to perform here
sometime in May. Any special contributions to the concert series fund helps pay for publicity, artist
fees, and other costs, and are greatly appreciated.
MISSIONS
LENTEN OFFERINGS 2016
Lenten offerings will be distributed to the following: the Light House Shelter; the Appalachia Service Project to help
with home improvement in depressed areas; and the Kasambala Health Center to help with urgent needs. Funds donated may be designated among any of these projects. Undesignated funds will be distributed evenly among the
three. Thank you for your support.
WINTER RELIEF SHELTER
February 15—22
We would like to thank everyone who helped with Winter Relief.
There were so many volunteers helping our guests have a safe and comfortable time at
their Calvary home. Breakfasts were wonderful, lunches awesome, and dinners amazing.
We want to thank Christy Little’s Disciple Ship for children who made placemats. Calvary
Center made cards for our guests and Brownie Troop 1797 made heart centerpieces. We
spent the evenings in fellowship hall getting to know our 31 guests. During this time laundry was returned washed and clean, jigsaw puzzles were completed, and often there was a late snack of ice cream
with chocolate sauce. As we came together during the evenings, we shared experiences, listening to each other’s conversation, becoming a family. Our guests appreciated the care and attention. For one week we had the opportunity to
give 31 special people refuge from the winter’s cold with warmth, love, and care. I am sure that that everyone who
volunteered came away feeling that they received more than they had given. Thank you Calvary community of faith
for your help and support.

Youth SUNDAY: 6/5/16
At SNY we will begin planning for it!
The month of February saw the youth
spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
The youth baked many chocolate
chip cookies alongside wonderful
adults at Cookie Factory. Next up was
Pancake Supper, where they all practiced their pancake flipping skills.
They ended the month by cooking
dinner for our Winter Relief guests! It
was a great month for the youth of
Calvary spending time laughing,
cooking, and dancing in the kitchen.
January's Tech Class
It was a ton of fun! Thanks to all who came
out!

DONATE CANDY FOR
THE EASTER EGG HUNT!

WITH EASTER EGGS?
In the first weeks of March, we
will be collecting candy to put in
the Easter eggs for the hunt.
Candy should be able to fit in small plastic eggs and
should not contain any nuts. There will be a basket
in the Main Lobby for drop off. The last collection
date for candy will be Sunday, March 13. Thank
you for helping us make the Easter egg hunt
spectacular!
On March 13, the children will be
passing out Easter eggs to all that are
interested in helping. Inside the egg
will be a paper listing a very much
needed baby item for the Emergency Baby Pantry.
Items should be purchased and brought back to Calvary and put in the pack ’n play set up in the main
church lobby. The “due date” for items will be April 3.
Thank you for helping us to bless the new, precious
ones of God!

2016 UMM Project Work
In January, the UMM Executive Board met and outlined our mission and discussed the kinds of programs and events
that we would like to be involved with this year. At the February UMM monthly meeting, the Executive Board shared
the following projects that we will continue pursuing during calendar year 2016: Navy football game parking, Shower
Ministry, Sunday morning scripture reading scheduling, Winter Relief and the UMM singers.
2016 UMM Events
During our February monthly meeting, the UMM Executive Board also indicated that the following events will be
scheduled during 2016: golf outings, raft up, Bowie Baysox game (this has already been scheduled for August 8,
2016—put it on your calendar), and a crab feast.
PLEASE REMEMBER: All men of Calvary UMC are UMM members. Just share your name and some basic contact info
to join our group or just come to our monthly meeting– we are a friendly group. You can serve at will and when you
can. Contact information can be sent to [email protected] or you can just say hi at church.
