edars-Sinai started 2012 in high gear, with our faculty continuing to
make dramatic progress in helping those who face debilitating disease.
Below are a few examples of their pioneering work.
The future of cardiac care may well arise at Cedars-Sinai. Our Heart Institute
team became the first in the world to complete a clinical trial using heart stem
cells to repair damage in patients who had suffered heart attacks. The Heart
Institute is also transforming the way sudden cardiac arrest is identified and
treated, which will help prevent this often fatal disorder.
Our heart transplant team performed more adult heart transplants than any
other medical center in the world during 2010. And our Women’s Heart Center
remains a nexus for—and global leader in—gender-specific research, education,
and treatment.
“Our Heart Institute team became the first in the world to complete
a clinical trial using heart stem cells to repair damage in patients who
had suffered heart attacks.”
Physicians at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute are
changing the way breast cancer is treated. With the recent discovery that a
common but radical surgery on lymph nodes is often unnecessary, doctors can
now spare many women who face breast cancer from this invasive procedure.
Scientists at the Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute are working to
harness the power of stem cells to repair tired tissues—in the brain, eye, liver,
and more—so that one day we can provide truly customized, personalized care
to our patients.
Clinical trials enable physicians to translate research discoveries directly into
patient care. That’s why we are excited about the new Biomedical Imaging
Research Institute. The first of its kind in the United States, the Institute houses
all the imaging tools needed to follow a clinical trial from beginning to end.
The Medical Center also is a trusted destination for those with inflammatory
bowel disease (IBD). Our team is developing individualized therapies to treat—and
potentially cure—victims of IBD not only at Cedars-Sinai, but around the world.
These endeavors share two fundamental traits: They bring hope and healing
to patients, and they would be impossible without the generous community of
donors who care deeply about supporting medical discovery and progress.
We are grateful every day, in every lab, clinic, and classroom, for the
partnerships that foster innovation and advanced care at Cedars-Sinai.

Building Momentum
The Heart of the Game
E
ach year, a team of cardiac transplant
patients gives their new hearts a
workout by playing softball against
the doctors who saved their lives. Doctors
and patients celebrated the tradition’s 20th
anniversary with a game and picnic at a
Culver City park. The games last just three
innings, because doctors don't want their
patients overexerting themselves in the hot
sun. The patients usually win, although this
year’s match ended in a 20-20 tie. Pitcher
Jon Kobashigawa, MD—director of the
Heart Transplant Program and the
DSL/Thomas D. Gordon Chair in Heart
Transplantation Medicine—brought the
annual tradition to Cedars-Sinai, and was
pleased with the statistics. Not everyone
plays, but everybody has a great time.
Pictured above: Richard “Doc” Channon
and Martin Bender got their second at-bats
with life after their heart transplants.

First Person: Abu Sikder
Each year, students from nearby Fairfax
High School come to Cedars-Sinai to learn
about careers in healthcare. Through the Youth
Employment and Development (YED) program,
they earn school credit and apply their
academic, critical thinking, and
communication skills, working 10 hours
a week in a department that suits their
interests. Seventeen-year-old Abu Sikder—
part of the Medical Center’s IT
department—is one of these students.
“I
am so honored to be
a part of the YED
program—it’s the biggest
opportunity I have ever had.
The Enterprise Information Services
team (EIS) provides services related to
information management through
computer, data technology, and
telecommunications systems. EIS is a big department,
so teamwork is important. Everyone has a sense of
humor and likes to have fun, but they also take their
jobs seriously and get the work done.
The department is a good fit for me because I
want to combine my passion for medicine with
computer engineering and study biomedicine in
college. I really want to become a doctor. When I
was young, my brother passed away from a
neurological disorder. His death left me in shock.
Also, my dad has been suffering from cirrhosis due
to hepatitis, and I’ve been doing my best to care for
him. I even wrote a research paper on cirrhosis.
Working in a medical environment is my goal.
My attitude is: I don’t want to do just one thing; I want to do
everything. I’m never going to limit myself. I’m learning how to build
my resume, fill out applications, and present ideas, and I’m stumbling
upon opportunities that I never imagined. Plus, with the money I earn,
I can help my mom purchase groceries.
My coworkers are mentors to me. They give me advice on school,
personal matters, career, and even random issues. They help
me in any way possible and also make me laugh—I feel like I’m at home.
Also, they won’t stop feeding me! After being in this department, I’ve
gained 10 pounds, so I’m not underweight anymore!
I love that when people I work with see me outside the office, they treat
me like a fellow staff person. It’s impossible to describe how much it means
to feel like a real employee and not like a high school student who’s just
helping out. I was even invited to the festivities when Cedars-Sinai was
ranked among the top 100 places to work in IT by Computerworld
magazine. I was so happy to help the department and hand out prizes to all
of our staff. And I even got one myself!
T
he YED program helped me become a part of Health Occupations
Students of America (HOSA)—a national organization that
promotes career opportunities in healthcare. Each year, HOSA
holds a competition between high schools in different cities. I got the
chance to compete against other students in subjects that are relevant to
what I’d like to do with my career. The competition was in Sacramento—
it was the first time I flew on an airplane and the first time I got to travel
outside of Los Angeles!
You can study all you want, but you won’t be as successful if you
aren’t also getting hands-on experience. YED gives everyone a chance—
not just the top 5 percent of students. There are just so many things I
wouldn’t have learned if I hadn’t become a part of this program. I hope
that someday I can come back and work at Cedars-Sinai again, so I can
give back to the hospital that has given me something so valuable.

any children in underserved
communities have undetected
vision problems. To address this
concern, COACH for Kids and Their Families®—
a mobile medical program of the Cedars-Sinai
Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center—
collaborated with Green Dot Public
Schools to provide vision screening for
children in low-income Los Angeles
communities. The COACH team found
some 30 percent of the 400 children
screened at Green Dot schools in 2011 to
have abnormal vision. Those children were
then referred to resources where they
received free or low-cost glasses.

CATALYST WINTER 2012
D
ental disease is one of the most significant—and unmet—health
needs facing children. Since 2003, COACH for Kids and Their
Families®—a program of Cedars-Sinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s
Health Center—and its Healthy Smiles initiative have helped meet that need,
taking the fight for dental health straight into underserved Los Angeles
neighborhoods. Over the years, this outreach has brought preventive dental care
to thousands of children whose parents cannot afford dental coverage. Without
Healthy Smiles, many of these children would simply not get proper dental care.
“The program started because we were finding that the kids coming to
the COACH mobile medical units had a lot of dental problems in addition to
their other medical issues,” explains Jill Zappia, dental hygienist and
Healthy Smiles coordinator.
Healthy Smiles offers dental examinations and fluoride varnish treatments,
which are protective coatings that can help reduce tooth decay by as much as
50 to 70 percent. Families with children who need more extensive treatment
are given referrals for low-cost or free care. The program even provides
transportation for referred children to ensure they get the care they need.
In 2011, 90 percent of children referred for dental services received the
care they needed.
Education is also an important part of the program. Zappia teaches
children the correct way to brush and floss their teeth, as well as about the
importance of brushing after every meal. In addition to serving neighborhoods
directly with the COACH mobile medical units, Healthy Smiles works with
community partners to provide classes on proper dental hygiene and nutrition.
The worsening economy and California budget cuts have made the program
more important than ever. The state budget has drastically cut back on the
Denti-Cal services that help subsidize dental care for the poor. As a result, the
organization Children Now recently gave California a D in oral health.
Zappia and her Healthy Smiles cohorts are doing everything they can to
raise that grade in Los Angeles as they brighten kids’ grins.

edars-Sinai donated 36 backpacks filled with emergency
supplies to Queen Anne Elementary School—near Pico
and Crenshaw boulevards—enabling every classroom
and office there to have its own disaster-preparedness kit. In
addition, Cedars-Sinai Disaster Resource Center Coordinator
Ryan Tuchmayer gave students vital tips on how to prepare for
emergencies at home. Queen Anne is a longtime Cedars-Sinai
partner. The Community Health Initiatives Healthy Habits Program
launched its pilot there seven years ago, and the school is also a
partner site for COACH for Kids and Their Families®, a mobile medical
program of Cedars-Sinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center.

These children are
participants in Share and
Care, a Cedars-Sinai trauma
response program that helps
students address their
problems and emotions
through art. Students in 26 elementary, middle, and high schools throughout
the Los Angeles area are referred to Share and Care by their teachers if they are
having academic, social, or behavioral problems following a stressful or
traumatic event affecting their ability to learn in the classroom. Such events
can include a divorce, bullying, or a natural disaster such as a fire or
earthquake, or the death of a fellow student from illness or gang violence.
Unfortunately, many children are confronted with traumatic events that can
lead to anger-management problems and other emotional issues. Specialized
therapists with the Cedars-Sinai Psychological Trauma Center encourage
these students to discuss what they are feeling in a safe environment.
“Sometimes, kids have so much on their shoulders that it’s impossible for
them to focus on school, which should be their priority,” explains Suzanne
Silverstein, founding director of the Psychological Trauma Center. The Share
and Care program allows students to express their innermost frustrations
through creative art exercises. Their drawings also make powerful
statements that allow therapists to assess each child’s individual needs.
Cutbacks in the state budget have eliminated much of the funding
necessary for school counseling services—making the Share and Care
program an even more valuable resource. Oftentimes, it is the only
psychological resource available to the student body.
Melinda Goodall, principal of Loyola Village Elementary School, has
witnessed firsthand the benefits of the Share and Care program. “Students who
participate end up with improved social skills and greater emotional stability,”
she says. “The therapists are dedicated to each and every child—which
gives the children a better chance to succeed academically after a trauma.”
The students’ drawings
showcase the variety of Share
and Care sessions in response
to individual student trauma,
including fires, earthquakes,
neighborhood violence, and
the emotions that often arise
after a surgery.

The Philanthropic Spark
Phyllis and William Axelrod
built a legacy of caring that
endures through their
posthumous gift of art.
By Denise Barta
The Art of Love
F
or 62 years, Phyllis and William Axelrod reveled in a marriage
thought extraordinary by everyone lucky enough to come into their
lives. “It was a special love affair,” recalls their daughter Leslie
Randall. “They were just precious together.” Part of what made their union
so strong was that both Axelrods took pleasure in the same things—their
family and friends, their beautiful home, and the art they had acquired
together over the years and that enhanced their lives.
Three of those pieces, donated by the Axelrods in appreciation for the
care they received at Cedars-Sinai over the years, are now part of the
hospital’s “Art of Healing” collection (see sidebar at right). After Phyllis and
Bill passed away four months apart in 2010—he from the blood disorder
polycythemia vera, she from ovarian cancer—works by Charles Arnoldi,
Larry Bell, and Charles Wysocki were selected from their collection because
“they embody the type of artwork we like to display
to lift patients’ spirits. They are light, colorful, and
eye-catching,” says Cedars-Sinai curator John T. Lange
(see pictures at right and on pages 39 and 42).
According to Leslie, her father always had an interest
in helping young people get a start in life, and collecting
works from emerging artists was a way to do that. Giving
artists creative freedom and getting to know them personally
brought Bill and Phyllis as much joy as the artwork itself.
Lifelong friends Jackie and Irv Hoffman, MD, recall
that the Axelrods were not art connoisseurs. “They just
bought pieces they loved, art that made them happy.”
T
hose close to the Axelrods were not surprised
to learn of the posthumous donation, as Phyllis
and Bill had a long history of charitable acts.
Through the years, the Axelrods were supportive of various
organizations, including the Vista Del Mar Foundation, the
American Heart Association, and the Jewish Federation.
Similarly, the Axelrods never stopped opening up their lives
to new friends. The couple had been living in the house they
built on Maybrook Drive for more than 40 years when the
Kaplan family moved across the street. “I remember the first
time I met Bill,” says Blair Kaplan. “I was strolling my
7-month-old daughter, Blake, one morning and Bill sweetly
introduced himself. He told me his wife wasn’t feeling well,
but that she loved babies and the sight of mine would make
her so happy.” From that day on, baby Blake and her two
sisters would spend hours at “Phyl and Bill’s,” and the Axelrods

“My personal experience has shown me that
there is an urgent need to find cures for brain
diseases. By taking discoveries directly from
the laboratory to the patients, we can make a
huge and dramatic impact on people’s lives.”
— Dale Cochran
“With so many charitable causes, giving
money does not always translate to rapid
progress, but Dr. Black’s work is different.
From the moment I first heard him speak,
I could see he was getting results. Those
results grow out of a collaborative effort.
It’s like that old African proverb says:
It takes a whole village…”
— Pauletta Washington
“The Brain Trust provides me with an opportunity to give
back—not only to help advance the science, but also to
support patients with brain cancer and other neurological
diseases. It’s important because the stakes are so high.
The brain is paramount: It is who we are.”
— Carol Bennett, MD
“Dr. Black is a miracle
worker. His knowledge and
skill, both as a surgeon
and scientist, will continue
to lead to remarkable
breakthroughs in the fight
against diseases of the
brain. The ongoing
achievements of his entire
team are simply
phenomenal and show
quite clearly that
philanthropy in this area
does help save lives.”
— Angelia Bibbs-Sanders
“It’s a challenge to get resources to the
physicians and scientists who have a novel
or groundbreaking idea—and that’s what
The Brain Trust is all about. Their work
motivates us, their progress inspires us, and
their dedication keeps our passion alive.”

Inspiration: My late husband, Johnnie

warrior for justice, but also a
trailblazer who fought for the
rights of the underserved. He
was a man with an indefatigable

neurological disorders, such as
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, strokes,
and aneurysms. What a way to
continue his magnificent legacy

Celebration of Life

The annual Celebration of Life honoring blood and
marrow transplant survivors took place under
bright skies and colorful balloons at the Skirball
Cultural Center. The event reunited some 75 former
patients with the doctors, nurses, and other staff
members who gave them the care—and the
hope—to survive their cancer and thrive in its wake.
It also gave families and friends a chance to express
appreciation to their loved ones’ caregivers.
“It’s a day that means a lot to all of us,” said
Michael C. Lill, MD, medical director of the Blood and
Marrow Transplant Program at the Samuel Oschin
Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai. “The
staff—particularly the nurses—tend to see the patients
when they’re in the hospital and are very sick. This is a
chance to see the results and to see them doing well.”

Marrow Transplant Program at Cedars-Sinai,

featured speakers at the 2011 Celebration of
Life event, flank Dr. Lill. As a teenager, Hall
overcame a paralyzing boating accident to
not only walk again but also to become an
elite athlete. He later learned he had leukemia,
and his only option for a cure was a bone
marrow transplant. Shah was 22 when she
learned she had cancer. She recently
celebrated her 18th anniversary of remission
after her bone marrow transplant.

Since 1956, the Fashion
Industries Guild has raised
more than $21 million for
Cedars-Sinai to fund special
programs and facilities.
Proceeds from this year’s
gala—which raised
$900,000—will support the
Fashion Industries Guild
Endowed Fellowship in
Pediatric Neuromuscular
Diseases. The funds will allow
the Department of Pediatrics
and the Cedars-Sinai
Regenerative Medicine Institute
to investigate and develop new
treatments for devastating
neurological diseases affecting
children, including spinal
muscular atrophy, cerebral
palsy, and epilepsy. The group’s
membership includes
manufacturers, buying
offices, sales reps, publicists,
and other apparel and retail
professionals.

he light blue jackets of Cedars-Sinai volunteers are
among the most familiar sights in the Medical Center’s
halls. An army of caring more than 2,000 strong,
these volunteers serve in every department, donating
their time to help staff, patients, and families in any way
needed. Ranging from doe-eyed teens to wise
grandparents, they come from various cultures and from all over the Los Angeles area to work together seamlessly as a
family. Indeed, some actually are family, and Barbara Leanse, director of Volunteer Services, sees what a difference it
makes when family members volunteer together.
“Everyone who volunteers has the same vision and level of commitment,” Leanse explains. “But when two family
members volunteer together, they bring their love, trust, and fulfillment to the Medical Center. They are already a tight
unit, which naturally makes our volunteer program even stronger. They draw strength and support from each other so
they can go and do amazing things in the hospital.”
Judy Kaplan and Laurie Rosen | mother and daughter
Judy Kaplan has been volunteering in The Helping
Hand Gift Shop for 25 years, and she inspired her
daughter, Laurie Rosen, to bring her upbeat disposition
to the Emergency Department. Once in a while, they
have the luxury of sharing lunch together when their
shifts overlap. Judy recently had a second tumor
removed from her brain, but with Laurie’s help is back
at the gift shop doing what she does best: helping
patrons find the perfect gift for a loved one.
YEARS VOLUNTEERING:
Judy: 25; Laurie: 3
Judy: The Helping Hand Gift Shop
Laurie: Emergency Department
DEPARTMENTS:
Judy: I grew up in Beverly Hills and raised
my family here, so I wanted to give back to the
community that helped nurture us.
Laurie: My grandparents and parents have been treated
at Cedars-Sinai, and I gave birth to my children there.
When the kids grew up, and my work schedule
changed, I had more flexible time. I wanted to be in a
fast-paced department in the Medical Center, where I
could help people in urgent need.
MOTIVATION:
32
CATALYST WINTER 2012
Judy: Through volunteering, I have made
friendships that are still going strong 25 years later, and
we all share an important experience—knowing what
it’s like to help others.
Laurie: I wasn’t sure how I would handle the atmosphere
in the Emergency Department, but at the end of the day,
it’s all about the people. Everyone there is in what they
consider an emergency situation—whether life-threatening
or not. And it’s incredible to be able to support the
patients. It also makes me happy that the emergency staff
members know they can depend on the volunteers.
WHAT I GET BACK:
FAVORITE PART: Judy: I like to listen when people want to
talk about why they’re in the hospital and who they are
visiting. It’s nice to be able to offer them a distraction or
help them choose something nice—especially when
brand-new grandparents come in and want to shop for
their first grandchild. I just like to be available in any
way I can.
Laurie: My favorite part is taking the edge off the
anxiety of parents who are there with their children, or
comforting an elderly person who relaxes when I put a
warm blanket over them and spend time talking to
them. I love knowing that I can make a difference.
Laurie: I’ve gained insight into so many
things, including different cultures and medical
conditions. I’m really learning that you can’t assume
anything about any of the patients.
Judy: You have to treat everyone with respect. You
don’t know what they’re going through. Laurie has
taught me to be a more compassionate person. She has
a great sense of empathy because she knows what it’s
like to have family members in the hospital, and she
treats every patient with warmth and kindness.
Laurie: My mom has taught me the importance of
giving back, and she has also taught me patience. She
always has a friendly face and is very approachable,
but she also knows when people don’t want to talk
and need their space, and that’s important too.
LESSONS LEARNED:
work really hard to get back on her feet and back to
work. When people go through something that severe,
there can be a lot of fallout, but she got through it and
she keeps working at it every day.
OTHER THINGS WE DO TOGETHER: Judy and Laurie: Cooking,
shopping, and spending time with Laurie’s two sons,
who are 17 and 20 years old.
Laurie: The time I gave my mom
pneumomia. We were adults and we both ended up in
the hospital at the same time.
Judy: It wasn’t fun at the time, but we always laugh
when we think back!

REMEMBER WHEN:
Judy: I am proud of the amazing
friends, husband, and kids Laurie has around her.
Laurie: My mom just had her second surgery to

Josh and Jon Sadik | brothers
Josh and John Sadik are twins and best friends in
their senior year of high school. They tend to finish
each other’s sentences, and joke that they always
get to sleep over at each other’s house. When they
aren’t volunteering, studying, or filling out college
applications, they engage in friendly yet competitive
games of ping-pong. They volunteer on the same
day and always try to take their breaks together.
YEARS VOLUNTEERING:
Josh and Jon: 2½ years each
Josh: Board of Governors Patient
Magazine Program
Jon: General volunteer
DEPARTMENT:
Josh: This past year, I decided I wanted to
work in the medical field someday, hopefully in
sports medicine, so volunteering at a hospital seemed
a great way to get started.
Jon: I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was about 7
years old. I’m really interested in biology and
anatomy.
Josh: It’s so rewarding to change somebody’s state of
mind just by helping them in some small way. I bring
magazines to people in their hospital rooms, and it’s
nice to both alleviate their boredom and strike up a
conversation.
Jon: When I first started volunteering, I was pretty
nervous, but now I can confidently help the Volunteer
Department with whatever needs to get done, from
delivering a letter or a blanket to answering phone calls.
MOTIVATION:
Josh: Volunteering gives you more
confidence around people. And all the people I’ve
connected with here have made the experience
really meaningful.
Jon: I love interacting with patients and seeing them
happy. The more comfortable I am with showing
people around, the easier their visit to the hospital will
be. It’s also brought Josh and me closer together,
because it’s a shared experience: We’re both giving and
getting something back.
WHAT I GET BACK:
34
CATALYST WINTER 2012
Josh: One day
I was chatting in Farsi with a patient who asked for a
rabbi, and I was able to help. That felt really good. I
also like that Jon and I get to learn together and help
correct each other’s mistakes.
Jon: I remember a really grumpy patient, whose mood I
brightened just by bringing her flowers. That was one
of my favorite days. You really gain a sense of
confidence when you learn how to connect with
patients on your own.
FAVORITE PART:
LESSONS LEARNED: Josh: You can’t always predict how
people are going to react, and you need to always be
receptive and understanding. You have to treat people
well, no matter what.
Josh and Jon Sadik enjoy a spirited game of ping-pong in their backyard.
Jon: You really need to take initiative. Employees are busy
and need help; you need to ask what they need or
anticipate patient needs. I’ve also learned how meaningful
it can be to socialize and connect with different people.
Josh: Jon has taught me that one of the best things you
can do for someone is find a way to put a smile on
their face. I often feel anxious about homework or
something else, and Jon will help me by taking a few
minutes to play a game of ping-pong. It relaxes me and,
after that, my whole outlook is different.
Jon: Josh has definitely taught me the importance of being
responsible. I’m a procrastinator, but I look to him to be
reminded that in school, in volunteering, or in anything
else, you always need to be responsible for your actions.
Josh: Jon really knows how to keep his
priorities straight. Family is very important to him and he’s
dedicated to spending time with our parents and sisters.
Jon: Josh really knows how to keep his cool. Whether
on the basketball court or with friends, he also knows
it’s important to respect everyone, and I’m proud of
him for that.
FAMILY PRIDE:
Jon: One of our most memorable
moments was when we were both chosen to be
valedictorians of our middle school. Josh had to give
his speech first. He broke the ice so I wasn’t as nervous
when it was my turn.

Fred and Barbara Kingsdale | husband and wife
Fred and Barbara Kingsdale have been married for 51
years and, after all this time, they still smile lovingly
when they catch each other’s glance. They love
spending time together—even if it consists of doing
nothing. But they attribute their successful marriage to
the fact that they do things separately, too, so they
volunteer at the hospital on different days. Barbara has
volunteered for a decade, but it wasn’t until their
daughter had a close call in the Emergency Department
that Fred decided he wanted to help other people
during emergency situations.
YEARS VOLUNTEERING:
Barbara: 10 years
Fred: 3 years
Barbara: Seventhfloor information desk
Fred: Emergency Department
DEPARTMENTS:
Barbara: It’s all
about giving back to the
community. Once our kids
were grown up, I did all the
girly things like going to lunch
with my friends and getting
my nails done and playing
cards, but I needed to give
back, too.
Fred: After I retired, I wanted
to volunteer where there was
activity. When our daughter
had a traumatic asthmatic
attack, the Cedars-Sinai
Emergency Department saved
her life. That’s when I decided
I wanted to help out. And as a
kid, I wanted to be a doctor,
so before cashing in my chips,
this seemed like the closest
thing to being one!
MOTIVATION:
36
CATALYST WINTER 2012
Barbara: Everybody has problems, and you just need
to make it as easy on them as you can. I remind the
patients’ families that my job is to make them more
comfortable and to let the doctors do the medical work.
Fred: You never know what to expect in the Emergency
Department. From a gunshot wound to an infant with
a fever, you have to make everyone understand that
what they are going through is important—but that
triage is necessary, too. When you take a minute
to talk to someone quietly and kindly, it helps
them understand.
“I always try to make it fun by joking
with people. You have to know whom
to joke with and how to help people,
but that’s the best part.” —FRED KINGSDALE
Barbara: A lot of the people in the
hospital are waiting: They’re waiting for procedures or
waiting for family members or for results, and it’s so
nice to know that, just by distracting them for a little
bit, I can make that experience easier.
Fred: People in the ER are usually there because of a pretty
horrible event. It’s rewarding to work there because we’re
making a difference in their lives at a critical time.
WHAT I GET BACK:
FAVORITE PART: Barbara: Even though I’ve been volunteering
for 10 years, every week is different, every day is
different, and every shift is different. You never know
what to expect. But patients remember you, and I’ve
gotten to know many patients by name.
Fred: I always try to make it fun by joking with people.
You have to know whom to joke with and how to help
people, but that’s the best part.
Barbara: Fred has taught me that you
can never judge anyone. He’s very accepting of people,
even if they are doing things differently
than he would. He’ll never put anyone
down and he respects people with different
opinions.
Fred: Barbara has taught me patience and
compromise and to take everything in
stride. Our marriage has been successful
because I quickly learned that marriage is
give and take—and I give more than I take,
and that’s okay with me!
LESSONS LEARNED:
Barbara: Fred is always eager to
help anyone in the waiting room, and
nothing bothers him. He also knows it’s okay
that some people don’t want to talk about
why they are there. And Fred has the greatest
sparkling eyes—even after 51 years.
Fred: Barbara is so good with people and,
even in a full waiting room, she has a knack
for remembering names and why people are
there. Plus, she’s dedicated. She’s been doing
this for 10 years.
FAMILY PRIDE:
REMEMBER WHEN: Barbara: It’s a whole life of
potpourri that makes things interesting, and
we’re very family-oriented people. Our
children’s weddings have been important, and
so have all of our grandchildren’s
accomplishments.
Fred: The best thing for me is the day I married
Barbara. The rest is just icing on the cake.
Barbara and Fred Kingsdale relaxing at home, with needlepoint and
the daily newspaper.

“It was always their dream to have their art
displayed at the Medical Center.”

The Axelrods were avid art collectors who commissioned
