Well done and congratulations!
A Point of Focus for 2016
At Rainworth State School, we are striving to achieve success in all that we do. Our teachers and students are
engaged in their classrooms with our students producing excellent work.
As a school community, 2016 is our year for focusing on writing. As educators we want our students to have the
very best teaching and to achieve to their full potential. During our literacy lessons, we have been focusing on
using the Explicit Teaching Model, ensuring that our teachers are confident in their knowledge and skills in the
classrooms.
At all times our focus is on giving our students the very best opportunities to engage in writing and develop a love
of writing. Our students have been using a variety of quality vocab words in their writing, developing their skills
and abilities in producing quality sentences that are well thought out and developed.
As I continue to move through classrooms I am very proud of the high quality of work that our students are
producing. Congratulations to our students and our group of committed teachers.
School Improvement Unit - School Review
I have recently received information that our school is scheduled for a school review during Week 1 of Term 4
(October 4-6). The Department of Education and Training has introduced new performance reviews for
Queensland State Schools from 2015.
These reviews do not rate or compare schools but provide independent and quality feedback to help schools
continue to improve outcomes for students.
All schools will have a review at least every four years. A final report will be made available to parents and the
community on our school’s website.
Review teams spend time looking at a school’s data and other school information to gain a deeper understanding
of the school, its performance and context.

The review team will also meet and talk with staff, students, parents and other community members. If you are
interested in speaking to the reviewers, or would like more information about the review process, please feel free
to contact our office. I encourage anyone who is interested to have their say as it is your feedback that will help
us continue to deliver a quality education for students.
Further information about the reviews is available from the department’s website at: schoolreviews.eq.edu.au
School Opinion Survey
A reminder that the 2016 School Opinion Survey can be accessed online until July 29. My thanks to all families
who have taken the time to give their responses to this survey.
District Athletics
Our District Reps are competing this Thursday and Friday at Leslie Patrick (Arana Hills). Mr Stocker and I are
looking forward to cheering our students on as they represent both themselves and our school.
Rainworth’s Got Talent
This term has already seen such an amazing array of talents within our student cohorts. Don’t forget that this
coming Friday, July 29 from 3-5pm we will be holding auditions for all of our budding stars!
Uniforms
With the colder winter weather (back) upon us, we have noted a lot of students who are not wearing the correct
school uniform. Tracksuit pants and jumpers must be in our school colours. No other colours are accepted. If
you need to purchase new or second-hand uniforms, or need a reminder of uniform guidelines, please contact
our Uniform Shop directly and they will be able to assist you.
Junior Tabloid Sports
This wonderful, full-day event, will be held on Monday August 8 and involves all students from Prep to Year 3.
We look forward to seeing as many families to join us on the day, as well as participating in the picnic lunch that
will occur between 11.00am – 12.00noon. Hope to see you then.
Link here to view the Event Schedule for the day. A coffee van will be onsite for your convenience.
Principal’s Conference
Next Monday and Tuesday, August 1 & 2, I will be engaging in a state-wide principal’s conference. The
conference will focus on departmental strategic initiatives, I look forward to sharing this information with our
school upon my return.

Researchers form the national University of Singapore have found that the more
parents interfered when a child was trying to solve a puzzle, the more likely the child
was to develop “Maladaptive Perfectionism”.
This may be detrimental as it increases the risk of depression, anxiety and even lead to
suicide.

Library News
Book Week Parade
Term 3 is a busy and exciting time in the library. The Children’s Book Council of Australia has compiled a shortlist of wonderful Australian children’s books published in the last twelve months, with the winner to be announced
later in the term.
This year, the reading theme across the nation is ‘Australia: Story Country’ which opens up a celebration of
Australian children’s literature including our amazing Aboriginal legends, classics such as ‘Snugglepot and
Cuddlepie’ and ‘Dot and the Kangaroo’, favourite picture books of the 20 century such as ‘John Brown Rose and
the Midnight Cat’ and ‘The Bunyip from Berkeley’s Creek’, and recent contenders such as ‘Mr Huff’ and
‘Pinanhas DON’T Eat Bananas’.
Of course, Rainworth will celebrate reading by holding its annual Book Week Parade for our Prep to Year 2
students. On Thursday August 25, parents and carers are invited to join us in the hall at 9.15am to see the
colourful book character parade, and to spend some time afterwards reading to a small group of our children.
Time to start pondering your child’s costume. What crazy costume will the staff reveal this year?
Rainworth Reading Challenge 2016 - Australia: Story Country
As in previous years, Preps to Year 2s are participating in an individual reading challenge; this year it is to read
20 books, or more, in the term.
Our younger students will bring home their Australia: Story Country Reading Challenge sheet this week. Please
enter the title of each book as it is read and initial the sheet. Your child’s teacher will send the challenge sheets
to be library after 10 and 20 books have been read. Readers will receive a bookmark after 10 books and, most
importantly, on completion of the 20 books, may borrow an additional book from the library every time they visit
for the rest of the year!
Please vary the level of difficulty to correspond to your child’s reading ability; some children will read books with
the support of a caring adult. Encourage your child to spend some extra time reading throughout the term to
complete this challenge (no rush required) and work out the best time for reading every day. Development of a
love of reading is our goal as reading really is a gift for our children’s future.
Not to be left out, our Year 3-6s are undertaking a class challenge, where one hour of reading earns one sticker
on the Australia: Story Challenge poster in each classroom. These students also have a reading challenge sheet
where your assistance with signing off on the minutes/hours read will be appreciated. Please list in easy-to-tally
blocks of time, e.g. 15 minutes of time, to assist your child’s teacher when tallying the hours.
Last year, our older students amazed us with the number of reading hours logged over the term. Mr Paige’s
class is the one to beat; his Year 4 class blasted out over 900 hours of reading last year to win the annual
Reading Challenge Pizza Party.

String News
Due to a performance at one of my other schools, Payne Road State School, there will be no Junior Strings
rehearsal on Monday August 1. The Senior Strings rehearsal will still be on, as normal, so these students are
to arrive by 7.30am. The usual Monday class lessons will still run.
There will be a Chamber String rehearsal on at 1st break.
Important Housekeeping – Parents, Please Check and Action
• Ensure your children remember to bring pencils and highlighters to their lesson.
• There are still a couple of beginner strings who do not have a display folder. Does your child have a
folder?

Instrumental Music Recruiting for 2017 – STRINGS and BAND
Students in Year 2 are eligible for inclusion in the 2017 String Program, and students in Year 3 for the 2017 Band
Program at Rainworth State School.
Instrumental music is a wonderful opportunity provided by Education Queensland whereby students have the
opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument in group lessons. Learning an instrument helps to improve coordination, self-esteem, teamwork, self-discipline, and social skills and also provides your child with lifelong skills.
Information will be sent home shortly to the relevant year levels, and parents who wish their child/ren to be
assessed are to return the permission form by the dates advised in the information.
A student will not be assessed for the string program unless the permission form is signed and returned to the
office. When the form has been returned, students will be assessed during Term 3 to determine if they have the
necessary musical aptitude and physical attributes to play a string instrument. Notification and confirmation of
your child’s acceptance into the Program will be given at the early-to-mid Term 4 after the Music Aptitude Test,
Practical Test and discussions with Classroom, Music and Physical Education Teachers.
Please Note: Parents and students should decide whether they would prefer to learn either a string
instrument or a woodwind/brass/percussion instrument. Year 2 students interested in learning to play a
woodwind/brass/percussion instrument are required to wait until the end of Year 3 to be tested and will
commence in Year 4. Due to time allocation and limited spaces, not all students will be offered a place
but will be placed on a “waiting list” in case a position becomes available.
