This month’s thoughts come from retired Archdeacon Venerable Arthur Hawes
An Archdeacon’s Lot
It is said you only know what archdeacons do when they stop doing it. Archdeacons
are part of the Bishop’s senior staff and often called the Bishop’s eye. The Diocesan
bishop appoints the archdeacon who is a legal officer to a geographical area called an
archdeaconry.
Archdeacons have a range of responsibilities which I believe are influenced by the different mix
of bishops and archdeacons. For example, if there is one bishop and 2 or 3 archdeacons, then the
appointments to parishes are made by the archdeacons; whereas if there are 3 bishops and 2
archdeacons, then the bishops will make the appointments.
Archdeacons and the Diocesan Chancellor issue faculties for work undertaken in churches; they
usually have a direct involvement in the pastoral reorganisation of parishes and exercise their own
pastoral ministry to the clergy with their responsibility for clergy housing and regular clergy reviews.
Archdeacons undertake two types of Visitations. On a regular cycle there are visitations to all the
parishes in the archdeaconry when inventories are checked, ecclesiastical property examined and the
parish finances and other issues discussed. The archdeacon may also undertake a visitation if a
particular problem arises.
The other visitation is an annual event undertaken on behalf of the Bishop when all the
churchwardens (with whom archdeacons work very closely) who are elected annually at the annual
parochial church meetings are admitted to their office. These are wonderful occasions for people to
meet over refreshments before the service begins. The Archdeacon delivers a ‘charge’ which deals
with topics like recent changes in the law and any diocesan initiatives. Increasingly the charge is
written and available in written form and on the web.
An archdeacon will have other responsibilities in the diocese and the wider church, including
General Synod to which one of them is elected from the house of clergy. In today’s church,
archdeacons often have another major portfolio such as the care and appointment of hospital
chaplains, chairing the Education Committee or the Diocesan Advisory Committee and all of these
involve a great deal of visiting and meeting a wide variety of people.
Archdeacons will tell you that it is the best job in the church.
Venerable Archdeacon A Hawes (Retired)

In Barford she was the first head teacher not resident
in the School House, which became available for use
as office space, storage and room to encourage
subjects of special interest, and was later extended as
part of its present expansion.
Many people will remember the display and procession
she organised for the school’s centenary in 1977.
After retiring she moved to Wymondham but kept in
close touch with Group Activities and with old friends.
Her family have kindly offered to give everyone the
opportunity to get together to remember Mr. and Mrs.
Zanella and plan to hold a celebration at Cranworth
Jubilee Hall, 10am on Saturday 8th June where all can
share memories with displays of photographs and all
manner of memorabilia to bring back those halcyon
schooldays.
If you have any items you can share please contact
Beanie Brown on [email protected] or phone
01362 820068 or Jubilee House, Cranworth next to
village hall. Any items loaned to us will be returned in
good condition as all have been for previous
exhibitions. Please help us to make this a celebration
we will all remember fondly.

MEMORIES OF MRS ZANELLA
Friends of Barford and Cranworth were sad to hear of
the death of Mrs Zanella’s. on 1st April this year. In her
nineties and in declining health she had recently
decided to move into a Nursing home, where she
ended her days. Her entire career had been within our
Group of parishes. After training in Norwich Teacher’s
Training College, she took charge of Cranworth School
in 1944. She and her late husband Nando were
particularly supportive of Cranworth’s fundraising
efforts and two years ago she was invited back to take
part in Cranworth’s History Weekend. In the 1960’s
she became Headmistress of Barford School. She is
remembered with affection by ex-pupils, their parents
and former colleagues for her enthusiasm,
understanding and empathy with people of all ages.

WRAMPLINGHAM
THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE…
INSTITUTE
meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, at 7.30pm
in the Village Hall. Except for the April meeting, when
we had to move to The Cock Public House at the last
minute due to a plumbing problem in the VH.
The newly re-opened Cock was so very welcoming,
and couldn’t do enough for us, even though we did
have a much larger gathering than normal with very
welcome guests from other institutes, (over 40 of us
crowded in to their back room!) and our meeting had a
real buzz about it. We were entertained by Paul
Graves and his 2 sons (of H V Graves family butchers
of Griston,) by a really great informative, amusing and
very dexterous display of their work, with the added
bonus of being allowed to buy some bargains after the
meeting had closed. Paul’s lovely Norfolk dialect, and
his sons’ participation and good humour, made for
one of the best evenings all round.
Our next meeting is on the 14th May, with the East
Coast Truckers coming to tell us all about their
wonderful work for disabled and otherwise
disadvantaged children. They take these children on
away days, also have a holiday home at California
Cliffs, amongst other things.

will be unveiled at a Village Cricket Field Day on the
Meadow, which is planned for 13th July.
Great news! Thanks to our sponsor Cllr Cliff Jordan,
our charity has been awarded grant funding of
£93,155 from Norfolk County Council to enable an
extension to be built which will provide a rear store
leading off the main hall and changing rooms to the
side of the hall. This is fantastic news, as this will
allow the bulky items of equipment to be moved out of
the main hall into the rear store, and provide changing
facilities for school P.E. and other hirers of the open
space.
It is anticipated that site set up will take place in the
last week of May (half term), and construction will
commence towards the end of July. Access to the
open space will be limited on weekdays while the
project is underway, but access to the bowling green
will be maintained. Further details will be confirmed
next month.
TENNIS CLUB
Hopefully the weather will have warmed up by the
time the Open Tennis evenings start on Wednesday
1st May at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come
along, have a game and meet other players . All standards are
welcome. You do not have to be a member, just pay
£2-00 per evening.

MRS MARION ZANELLA. A LIFE CELEBRATION, Saturday 8th June from 10am
In April we mourned the loss of a wonderful lady who taught and cared for
children from Cranworth, Letton, Southburgh and Woodrising for decades
before she moved on to Barford to take up headship there until her
retirement 30 years ago. After a well-attended and moving service at St.
Mary’s church Cranworth, she was buried at East Harling, there joining her
beloved husband ‘Nando.
Her family have kindly offered to give everyone the opportunity to get
together to remember Mr. and Mrs. Zanella and plan to hold a celebration
at Cranworth Jubilee Hall on Saturday 8th June where all can share
memories with displays of photographs and all manner of memorabilia to
bring back those halcyon schooldays. Mrs. Zanella was also instrumental
in running many parish charities, arranging activities for adults and young
people, and without her enterprising spirit the parish would have had no
village hall which she purchased from Mr. Gordon of Letton Hall creating
the ‘Youth Service Hall’ for generations of local children.
The village hall committee will put together a display of photographs and memorabilia on June 8th but to do this
we will need the help of all those who remember them in both Cranworth and Barford. If you have any items you
can share please contact Beanie Brown on 01362 820068 (Jubilee House, Cranworth next to village hall) or any
committee member. Any items loaned to us will be returned in good condition as all have been for previous
exhibitions. Please help us to make this a celebration we will all remember fondly.
This photograph shows Mrs. Zanella (seated) with a group of former pupils.

Are you looking after someone?
Are you concerned about a neighbour and look in to check on their wellbeing, or perhaps do their
shopping, or provide the odd hot meal? Or do you provide round the clock care for someone in your
household who is ill or disabled, or elderly and frail? However little or much you do, there is a free hand
book, a telephone helpline and a website that provides information on where you can get help to support
the person you are concerned about or care for. Norfolk Carers Helpline is open from 8am to 8pm
Monday to Friday, and if you call them, they will send you a copy of the handbook. Tel: 0808 808 9876
(free from a landline).
Or visit the Norfolk Carers Information website at http://www.norfolkcarersinfo.org.uk.
Do you need help with general repairs and small jobs around your home or garden?
The Handyperson scheme provides vulnerable people living in South Norfolk with up to 2 hours labour from
local, reliable contractors - in many cases for FREE or at heavily discounted prices.
If you are means tested and either: aged 65 and over; registered disabled; or suffering from long-term ill
health, you are entitled to 2 hours labour and the installation of grab rails, smoke alarms, key safes, door
chains and window locks for FREE.
The service is available for owner-occupiers, tenants of private landlords, and tenants of registered social
landlords or housing association; works that are the legal responsibility of landlords are not covered.
For those registered disabled or suffering long-term ill health, but not receiving means tested benefits, the
service costs £10 p/hour (plus materials).
A non-discounted service costs £25.00 p/hour (plus materials and VAT if applicable).
Supported by our care and repair improvement agency (HIA), the handyperson scheme offers a safe,
reliable and affordable service and complete peace of mind for those in need.
Contact our Handyperson Co-ordinator on 01508 533705 to find out if you are eligible to apply.

Third and final article from Rev Tim Weatherstone re The Cost to Our Group of Parishes
So far we have seen how much it costs - costs set nationally - to have a Vicar living in their own group
of parishes and that even though our group gives a lot, yet that still means that other parishes and groups
in the diocese are effectively subsidizing our own parish priest or vicar, i.e. me. I don't think I am pretending
any of this is ideal and because I worked for about 25 years in work other than the church (I've worked in
agriculture and insurance) before I was selected for work in the church, I know what a job in "normal" life
is like. Yet it is still true that many people would want to have a Vicar in their area to take funerals,
christenings, weddings, carol services, harvests etc. etc. etc. and certainly I would not change this job for
anything else and it is an incredible privilege to live and work here. Yet in spite of all of that, it is important for
me that people know that when they give money at a service of whatever sort, or give money - money they
have earned - at e.g. some other event like a concert in their parish church, unless it is said that the
collection is being made for either the food provided or some other charity (e.g. the Children's Society or
Water Aid etc.) then it will go towards your parish and keeping your Vicar living and working here.
Some people would prefer not to give to their parish and would instead like to give directly to the diocese,
provided that supported the work of their Vicar living locally. This suggestion has been made and I am
hopeful of being able to publish a Sort-Code and Account Number for doing just that, during 2013.
If anyone has any specific concerns about where money is spent locally (obviously I can't answer for
anything else), then please get in touch.
In the meantime, please can I thank you all very much for all that you give of your hard earned funds and
please be assured that as we all aim to get closer to that figure of £50,000 per year of giving to the Diocese,
any money you give will be carefully audited and well spent.
