Fallen Timber Furniture Company
Fallen Timber Furniture Company, the ultimate in sustainability.
Natural Attrition Red Gum Bespoke Furniture and Homewares.
Combining the extraordinary beauty of old growth Red Gum
timber with the ultimate in sustainable harvesting – Natural
Attrition. Our handcrafted, custom made Red Gum timber
furniture and homewares allow you luxury with peace of mind.
Nestled on the banks of the King River in Oxley North East
Victoria, Brangie is a third generation family owned & run 200
acre property. 100 acres of the property lies on the floodplains
bounded by the Hurdle Creek & the King River. As this area is
regularly inundated with water it remains undeveloped & boasts
one of the few remnant old growth Red Gum forests of this area.
Over the years of cyclical drought & floods, many of these hundreds year old majestic giants have
fallen & died. This natural attrition however provided the nucleus for the ultimate in sustainably
produced Red Gum timber furniture. A new lease of life befitting of these regal giants of the river
plains and beautiful Red Gum timber furniture that doesn’t harm the earth.
Brangie has a healthy and diverse ecosystem that we wish to protect and preserve for future
generations to cherish and enjoy. Regenerating by removing weed species and revegetating new
areas to return it to a more natural state. We leave existing habitat undisturbed providing
sanctuary for native animals including kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, possums,
echidnas, lizards, frogs, fish, turtles, platypus, Rakali (water rat), snakes and innumerable bird
species. This includes timber that falls into/onto the waterways providing shelter for fish, turtles
& water rats and fallen & standing timber with natural hollows for lizards, snakes, birds &
possums.
Milling Services – Our portable Lucas Mill can mill trees on site. If you have your own timber that
you would like milled, or if you wish to purchase some raw slabs/roots to make your own fabulous
creations, we can help you.
Reclaimed Timbers – We are happy to remove unwanted fallen timber or disused old timber
buildings from properties. We love to reclaim beautiful timbers to rejuvenate & repurpose into
unique pieces of Heirloom Bespoke Furniture. Why Bespoke? In keeping with sustainability, we
want to create what clients really want and desire. Pieces that fit perfectly in their lifestyles and
suit their characters. We believe in individuality, not one size fits all & are here to help you realise
your dreams.
Furniture & Homewares - We’re passionate about helping
you realize your dreams. Be personally involved in the
creative process from the start. The joy and pride our
customers experience through their own unique creations
and knowledge they are helping preserve our fragile
environment is immensely rewarding to us. We will hand
tool & individually craft the timber that you choose to make
your vision a reality. No living tree was harmed in the
production of our furniture. Natures gift to you from the Red
Gum Forests of the King River Floodplains.

How I got it so mixed up I will never
know. Last addition I welcomed Vin Shelly
home after being sick an spending 7 days
in Melbourne.
Well it wasn’t Vin at all it was poor old
Paul Shelley and he had spent 7 weeks in
the Royal Melbourne Hospital. So welcome
home Paul hope you are much better and
to Vin stay healthy mate.
Sometimes when I type my fingers get in
front of my brain and all is lost. So I had
better pay more attention to detail in the
future.
I hope all the Shelleys stay fit and well

THE CHILTERN POP CHOIR – FABULOUS!
I know that our students are very clever and extremely talented, but when I heard the
Chiltern Pop choir sing on Saturday night, I was overwhelmed. Many of the
members of the choir are from St Joseph’s, with several
members attend other schools. Together the children
sounded amazing. The Chiltern Pop Choir entertained and
enthralled us all. A special mention needs to be made of Whittaker
whose fantastic male voice worked beautifully with the younger voices
of the children.
Congratulations to Julie Taylor and Jessica Zuber, who have nurtured
and encouraged these talented young people for some time now. I
would like to thank them for their time, talent and enthusiasm. The
children are very fortunate to have this opportunity in their town.
The Pop Choir will continue next year. If you missed the performance
on Saturday, you can catch the group at the Chiltern Carols by
Candlelight.
WELL DONE BEAU

School, Family and Community Achieving Together
Our “Day on the Lawn” fundraising event was a great success. We have raised just over $4000
which will go towards our savings for a new playground in our wonderful school. This day would
not be possible if not for the tremendous amount of work completed by many people behind the
scenes, and on the day itself. We would like to thank everyone who donated goods to be sold on
the day, to the girl guides for their work, The Wodonga Toy Library, Val Chenoweth for the
delicious fairy floss and very importantly Erin and Andrew of Overtime Duo for their wonderful
entertainment. We also must mention the “Many Hands Make Light Work ‘crew’ of staff, parents
and grandparents who set up, sold items and packed up so proficiently, and the Chiltern
Community for supporting the school by attending and having fun, food and festivities! We
would like to thank Heather and John Payne, for their tireless work in the lead up to our
wonderful day. We would also like to thank the Indigo Shire for their approval to use the park
and their assistance with closing off the car park.
Chiltern Students in Sport
On Friday, the 14th October Jacob (200m and 800m) and Matilda, (80m hurdles) qualified to
run in the State Schools Athletics Championships on the 24th October, in Melbourne. They have
won through three levels of competition to make it to these Finals. We are waiting with bated
breath to hear how they fared!
Rutherglen Agricultural Show, 2016
We have had some great results from the Year 2/3 Art entries at the Rutherglen Agricultural
Show. The work was entered in the section “An Anzac Tribute”, from Years 2 and 3 classrooms.
Well done to everyone who won certificates and also to everyone who entered their work.
Some of their Artwork was on display at our Fundraiser….we hope you were able to view it.

Another Yarn from Chiltern Spinners
Rutherglen Show a huge success
When some other North East agricultural shows faced difficult weather conditions and
had to be rescheduled it was great to see our local show go ahead on the planned day.
Thanks to the wonderful cooperation of the show committee space was provided in the
pavilion for all day spinning demonstrations.
Up to 8 spinners worked away at their craft and chatted to the public. There was a great deal of
interest in various aspects of the craft from the fibre itself to the mechanics of the various wheels.
Joy Bloomer set up a display of spinning equipment to show the stages from raw fleece to a
finished article. Thank you to all our members for promoting our group.
The number of entries in the spinning and weaving sections increased again this year. The standard was excellent and the champion award for the best overall entry was awarded to a handspun
skein crafted by Sandy Thornhill-Cole.
At the 2015 Rutherglen Show a merino fleece was generously donated to Chiltern and
Wangaratta Spinning groups and on show day this year Leigh Southwell from Wangaratta
brought along for the donor of that fleece a handspun and knitted beanie and scarf, both
beautifully crafted.
Once again this year a merino fleece was generously donated to Chiltern Spinners in appreciation
for their contribution to the success of the show. This will be shared out to members at our next
meeting..
CWA CHAT
Sadly, we have once again lost one of our former members, Vera Gehrig, who only left
CWA last year after 50 years of service. Vera had been secretary, president and our
NE Group President , and was very good with flower arranging, and an excellent
cook. We have already been missing her for a year and will continue to miss her.
This month a long list of items have been taken to the "Angels of the Forgotten" (to provide
children/youth in crisis - homeless or entering Foster Care, with Crisis Care Packages). Knitted:
care bears; adult beanies with matching scarves; children's beanies and a hat; more beanies,
scarves; 5 teggies (baby comforters); sewing: 4 small bags and 2 large bags - to hold items; 8 bag
tags; baby change pad; 10 drawstring bags. books and notepads, and 2 crocheted baby rugs.
These are always gratefully received. As our AGM is on 7th November at 10am, our secretaryelect is Judy Russell, and Judy will take over doing the "Chat".
That's all folks, Marilyn

FOX CONTROL PROGRAM 2016
Parks Victoria will be conducting an ongoing fox control program in the Chiltern - Mt Pilot
National Park during October - December 2016
The aim of the project is to reduce fox numbers throughout the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park
for the protection of native wildlife. The introduced Red Fox has been identified as a major
threat to the survival of the Brush-tailed Phascogale and is likely to compete for resources with
the Spot-tailed Quoll. Both of these threatened species are known to the Chiltern-Mt Pilot area.
The poisoning component is targeted exclusively at foxes. Safeguards have been incorporated
into the program to ensure that native wildlife is not affected.
1080 Fox - Off baits will be laid in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park during the period 24th
October to 23rd December 2016
Pet owners must be aware that their pets may be at risk if wandering in the park.
Therefore we ask for our neighbour’s co-operation in keeping all pets confined within their
property boundaries as legally required.

AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS
According to the Red Cross World Disasters Report 2016, released recently,
disasters killed 32,550 people in 2015, affected 108 million more and cost the world
$92.5 billion. As a global community, we don't cope with disasters very well. We
spend too much on clean up and recovery because we spend nowhere near enough on prevention
or mitigation. Last year's natural disasters cost Australia at least $9 billion, according to research
commissioned by the Australian Business Roundtable for Disaster Resilience and Safer
Communities. That's expected to double by 2030 and reach $33 billion per year by 2050. Yet we
spent barely $50 million to prepare for these disasters, even though we could see them coming.
Let's keep talking about disaster preparation and resilience. Preparing for a flood, fire or hazard
should be embedded in our culture, as commonplace as wearing a seat belt in a car. Natural
disasters are increasing in scale and frequency, compounded by a changing climate. Without
smarter ways to reduce risk, they'll soon cost far more than our country can bear. Let's invest,
today, in a safer future for tomorrow.
Emergency team members have been training over the winter to be prepared to deal with
whatever emergencies may occur. In this area we tend to concentrate on the dangers of bushfires.
However, windstorms can cause great destruction, and heatwaves cause more death across the
country than any other emergency. Are you prepared? There are 4 simple steps
• learn about the risks you face and how they might affect you
• make an emergency survival kit to help you through a disaster
• take action now to protect the important things in life
• create your personal emergency plan to help you when disaster strikes.
People who plan cope much better than those who do not.
Members please note that the next meeting of the Chiltern Branch will be at 7pm on Monday 7th
November in the Courthouse.

FEDERAL STANDARD SNIPPETS
October 1876 – A meeting of the Chiltern Boating Club was held on Thursday
evening at the Town Hall. It was resolved that on the 9 th November, Chiltern
Miners’ Sports Day, the boats should be let to the public at so much per head,
and a boatsman hired to take charge of that particular day. We may mention that matters are
progressing favorably in the boat builders’ yard, the boats having been completed and now
undergoing the process of painting. Mr Holman has the oars and skulls in hand and confidently
assures us all will be handed over to the club on the contract day.
October 1886 – Joseph William Boucher married Clara Louisa Williamson at St Paul’s Church
of England on 27th October 1886 in a service read by Rev Thomas Moorhouse and witnessed by
Roland Boucher and Ethel Williamson nee Wentworth (Clara’s aunt).
October 23, 1896 – On Wednesday evening the dwelling house of Mr John Bergin, mining
manager at Chiltern Valley No.2 was destroyed by fire. The furniture in the front room was partly
saved, also some bedding. Mrs Bergin was in the front portion of the house, and returning in the
direction of the kitchen found the place in flames. Several men engaged in working at the air shaft
of the mine assisted in extinguishing the fire, and in rescuing household goods. There was an
insurance of £200 in the Manchester Insurance Company, but this will not cover the damage
done.
October 23, 1896 – At the conclusion of the presentation to the Rev Father Gaffey at the local
RC Presbytery on Monday evening, the Rev Father O’Connor mentioned that the monument to
the late Rev Father Carr had been completed and was now erected over his grave in the Chiltern
New Cemetery, and was a credit to the people of the district who had subscribed to the cost.
October 19, 1906 - It is with sincere regret that we have to record the death of Mrs O’Neill,
relict of the late John O’Neill of “Armadale”, Main Street, Chiltern, which sad event occurred at
her residence, on Monday morning. The deceased lady contracted influenza about a week before
and up till Sunday night there was nothing to indicate that her condition was critical or that the
end was so near. Heart failure was the immediate cause of death, the patient passing peacefully
away about 5.30 am. Mrs O’Neill was a native of Armagh (Ireland) and sixty-five years of age, over
forty of which had been spent in Chiltern. On Tuesday morning her remains were taken in a silver
-mounted cedar and oaken coffin to St Mary’s RC Church where a Requiem Mass for the repose of
her soul was celebrated by the Rev Father Hogan PP. The members of the family left to mourn
their loss are Mrs Doolan, wife of Mr Thos Doolan, of Brown’s Plains; Mrs Quinlan, wife of Mr P
Quinlan, of the NSW railway department, Sydney; Miss Catherine O’Neill, and Messrs Thos,
Henry, Charles and Paul O’Neill, Chiltern, with whom the sincerest sympathy is felt in their sad
deprivation.
October 19, 1906 - Mr George Sanders, sanitary contractor, of Chiltern, was felling a tree on
Thursday of last week when a falling branch caught him across the chest and pinned him to a log.
He lay in that position for an hour or so before he could free himself and when he had
accomplished the difficult and painful task repaired home. He had to keep to his bed for a couple
of days but appears now none the worse for his unpleasant experience.
October 19, 1906 - Last Sunday, Mr Lin Wilson, of Chiltern, and his cousin, Miss Flo Scowcroft,
of Melbourne, narrowly escaped being drowned in the Indigo Creek near Chambers’ Barnawartha.
They had to cross the creek to reach “Willowgrove” and while doing so over the old crossing the
horse’s front feet got into a deep hole that had been caused by flood waters, and he went under.
With difficulty he got out on to safer bottom but the sulky made a drop into the hole and just
escaped being overturned. The affrighted horse declined to move for a time but eventually drew
the vehicle out. The occupants, who were drenched through, succeeded in obtaining changes of
clothing at a friends’ place and the journey home was negotiated without further mishap.

October 19, 1906 - Through participating in a hearty meal of ox tongue on Sunday Mrs Fred
Booth, of Chiltern, developed serious symptoms which were subsequently believed to be those of
ptomaine poisoning. It was Tuesday before she regained her apparent usual state of health, but is
now herself again.
October 26, 1906 - A great deal of regret was manifested amongst the residents of Chiltern
yesterday morning when it became known that Mrs McIntyre, wife of Mr Chas C McIntyre, had
succumbed after having the previous day survived a trying operations which had been performed
by Drs Harkin of Chiltern and Schlink of Wodonga. Deceased had only been ill for a few days
from an internal complaint – peritonitis – and as serious symptoms began to show it was
resolved after consultation that the only way in which the life of the patient could be saved was by
operation. The operation was skilfully performed on Wednesday morning and she appeared to be
doing well, having come out of the anaesthetic splendidly but about three o’clock yesterday
morning she collapsed. Deceased was a native of Chiltern, and one who was highly esteemed. She
leaves a husband and seven children, the youngest being a baby about four months old, for whom
the deepest regret is extended, to mourn their loss. Deceased was in past years a member of St
Mary’s RC choir, a member of the St Joseph’s dramatic club and in the best of her years, was
foremost at any bazaar or function in aid of the church. Mrs McIntyre was a daughter of Mrs
Keller and sister of Mr E A Keller and Mrs C L Hill, both of Chiltern.
October 20, 1916 - While driving to the Chiltern Railway station on Monday morning to catch
the train, Messrs L Aitken and Alf Kneebone and Miss Ada Kneebone had a sensational
experience. They were crossing the Black Dog Creek, on the Barambogie road., when one of the
wheels of the vehicle dropped into a deep rut, causing the gig to capsize, with the result that the
occupants were thrown into the creek, which at the time contained a couple of feet of water. The
two young fellows were on their way to go into camp, and all their belongings were thrown into
the stream. After getting out of the water they had some difficulty in rescuing their property and
when they had again assembled on the bank they all presented a sorry spectacle. They received a
thorough soaking, and had to return home for a change of clothing. Fortunately, none of them
was injured. This is a very dangerous crossing, especially at flood time, and it would be well for
the Chiltern Shire Council to have it attended to before a more serious, or perhaps fatal, accident
occurs.
October 20, 1916 - A pet kangaroo, which Mrs J Enright, of Chiltern, reared and hand kept for
several years, was, a few days ago, presented by her to the Melbourne Zoological Gardens.
October 20, 1916 - With the approach of summer snakes are beginning to make their
appearance. A reptile, measuring about 3ft 6in was despatched in the Chiltern Park last week,
and another was killed by Mr R Daglish in the garden of the Presbyterian Manse in Victoria
Street.
October 22, 1926 - After suffering for some time from an affection of the larynx Mr William
James Clayton of Middle Indigo Road, Barnawartha, died at the Wangaratta Hospital on Sunday.
He had been receiving attention at his home, but as his complaint became more acute his
removal to the hospital was advised in order that he should receive special nursing. About a
fortnight previous to his demise he became an inmate of the institution for the second time, but
being much weakened by continuous sickness little hope was entertained for his recovery, and he
died as stated. Mr Clayton was a native of Barnawartha, 60 years of age, and carried on farming
and fruit growing pursuits. He was an industrious man and by dint of hard work and
perseverance did well and made his property an object lesson for others. He never aspired to
public honors, but took a lively and keen interest in politics and many local affairs. He was a
member of the Standish (Chiltern) Lodge of Freemasons. His remains were taken to Barnawartha
by motor hearse on Monday for interment in the Church of England portion of the cemetery,
where there was a large and representative gathering of local and Chiltern friends of deceased.
The services were conducted in an impressive manner by Rev C T Rodda, and those of the
Masonic order by Bro. A L Gilmour. Deceased leaves a widow and family of three sons (Jack,
William and Richard) and three daughters (Misses Molly, Lucy and Amy).
