AN OItllINANCE
Relating to Currency Coinage and Tokens.
BE it ordained by the Governor - General of the Commonwealth of
Australia, with the advice of the Federal Executive Council,
and in pursuance of the powers conferred by the New guinea Act
1920, as follows :--
1. This Ordinance may be cited as Othe Currency Coinage and snort Wie.
Tokens Ordinance 1922.
2. The Ordinances mentioned in the Schedule hereto are hereby Repeal.

3. In this Ordinance, unless the contrary intention appears' Definition.

(2.) Any- native may pay to the Administration in silver -quarks
or other German coins any sums due by way of-fees, taxes, or -otherwise, and such coins. may be accepted by the Administration at such
rate of exchange as the Administrator from -time to time authorizes.

5. A:l.ldebts and moneys, due under a contract or otherwise,
exprèssed in marks or fractions thereof, shall be regarded as if expressed
in the same number of Aillings or fractions thereof, and payment of
such debts and moneys may be made in notes of the Commonwealth

of Australia or in any coins which are legal tender in the Commonwealth
of Australia.

6.-0.) Save as hereinafter provided, any person who issues
any token or counter to any person in the course of trade, or in lieu
of the payment or part payment in legal tender-of moneys due to
that person as wages or otherwisé, shall be guilty of an offence.
Penalty : Fifty pounds or imprisonment for six months.
(2.) Any person who accepts any token or counter in the course
of trade or in lieu of the payment or part payment in legal tender of
moneys due to him as wages or otherwise, shall be guilty Of an offence.
Penalty : Fifty pounds or imprisonment for six months.
(3.) Any religious or charitable body operating in the Territory,
whose principal object is religious or secular education, may be
exempted by the Administrator from the provisions of this section
if he is satisfied that such body does not carry on a commercial or
trading business or that its commercial or trading business is small in
proportion to its other activities.
(4.) Any exemption granted by the Administrator in pursuance
of the last preceding sub - section shall be notified in the New Guinea
Gazette._

7. --(1.) In the application of the Coinage Act 1909 to the Territory,
section seven of that Act shall not be deemed to apply to any transaction or dealing ; between natives.
(2.) In that part of the coast of New Britain lying between Cape
Merkus and Cape Dampier and in the hinterland adjoining that
coast, the shell known as gold -lip (Meleagrina margaretifera) may be
used by any person at the rate of twelve shillings a pair in place of
legal tender for any purpose except for the purchase, sale, barter
or exchange of Trocas shell.

To amend the Natives' Contracts Protection Ordinance 1921.

E it ordained by the Governor- General of the Commonwealth of

JO Australia,, with the _advice of the Federal Executive Council,
in pursuance of the powers conferred by the Neuz guinea Act 1920,
as follows :
1. --(1.) This Ordinance may be cited as the Natives' Contracts shorb title and
citation.
Protection Ordinance. 1922.
(2.) The Natives' Contracts Protection Ordinance 1921 is, in this
Ordinance, referred to as the Principal Ordinance.
(3.) The Principal Ordinance, as amended by this Ordinance, may
be cited as the Natives' Contracts Protection Ordinance 1921-1922.
2. Section three of the Principal Ordinance is amended by s.
inserting the following new sub- section

3. Section five of the Principal Ordinance is amended by omitting Amendment ó
from sub - section (1) the word " four " and inserting in its stead the 19x ,

to the subject of *Arithmetic first four rules, simple and
evidence of the date of her birth, and a medical certificate
satisfying the Commissioner in such particulars as he may
determine as to her sound bodily health and freedom from
physical defects, but she should not undergo medical
examination until instructed by the Commissioner to do

employed upon attaining the age of 18 years.
Casual or temporary Telegraph Messengers cannot enter for
the Examination.

APPLICATIONS will be received from persons qualified
for appointment to the positions specified below.
Applicants outside the Public Service are eligible for appointment to ( i ) the Administrative Division, ( 2 ) the Professional Division, and (3 ) to the General Division where

that on the thirteenth day of July, 1922, I formally and absolutely renounced, relinquished, and abandoned the use of my
said surname of McCracken, and then assumed and. adopted
and determined thenceforth on all occasions whatsoever to use
and. subscribe the name of James Bell instead of the said
name of James McCracken. And I give further notice that by
a Deed Poll, dated the thirteenth day of July, 1922, duly exe-
elite& and. attested and enrolled in the office of the Supreme
-Court of Queensland, at Brisbane, on the seventeenth day of
July, 1922, I formally and absolhtely renounced and abandoned
the. said surname of McCracken, and declared that I had
assumed and adopted and intended thenceforth upon all occaMons whatsoever) to use and subscribe the name of James Bell
instead of James McCracken, and so as to be at all times
thereafter called, knOwn, and .described by the.name. of James
Bell exclusivelf.
