ALAN Hickinbotham’s family is
selling at least $18 million worth of
their property after the prominent
builder’s death earlier this year.
The family’s 184ha Clarendon
Vineyard Estate, which includes an
83ha vineyard and two homes, is
released on the market today.
It is expected to sell for more
than $10 million.
It is the family’s second property
to be put on the market, after the
historic Paringa Vineyard, in the
Riverland, earlier this month.

The Advertiser understands Paringa Vineyard could fetch well in
excess of $8 million, partly due to
its valuable water allocations.
The sale of the Clarendon estate
even features a 98-page book for
potential buyers, detailing the features, titles and reprinting past
articles on the properties.
Mr Hickinbotham’s son, David,
said the family felt it had little
choice but to sell the properties.

‘‘Alan’s vision and my passion
created and sustained these magnificent vineyards and it would be
a challenge for any one of us to
carry them forward in their current
state of perfection,’’ he said.
‘‘As a family, we’ve decided to
pass on our legacy to an individual
or organisation with the drive to
continue the vineyard’s success.’’

house designed by Adelaide architect Rob Cheeseman and an underground home designed by German
architect Gerhard Schurer in 1981,
commissioned by David and Alan
Hickinbotham.
‘‘It’s just one of the unique vineyards and we’ve been lucky to be
stewards of it for over 40 years,’’
Mr Hickinbotham said. The underground home was voted one of
Australia’s best homes by Belle
magazine and has been David
Hickinbotham’s home for more
than 20 years.
‘‘The opportunity to live in one
of the unique houses in Australia
and to live here for over 20 years
is just exquisite,’’ he said.
The Paringa Vineyard is a 716ha
property, sitting 80m above the
floodplain on the River Murray
near Renmark. Grapes from the
vineyard are sold to many of Australia’s great wineries, and have
been used in Penfolds’ Kalimna
label, while the Hickinbotham family has retained about 20 per cent
for its own label.
