Katja Heitmann
Katja has a unique talent to involve her audience in a humoristic, surprising and sometimes uncanny way. She crosses
borders of circus, fine-arts, mime, dance and theatre, constantly looking for conceptual ways of presenting her performances and reaching out to the audience. Katja is fascinated by mankind’s struggle to get grip on existence. By creating systems to control our lives, we end up restricting ourselves. Who controls who? Who moves who? Questioning
the definition of reality and perception is a red line in her work. From there she is continuously exploring new themes
and disciplines.
Since her graduation Katja has been independently producing her own work. In September 2013 she presented
‘Eggs are good for your hair’ at Dansateliers Rotterdam, an unconventional performance with slack rope-artist Melanie Hagedorn. In spring 2014 she created ‘Me, my Selfie and I for the Dutch Dance Festival and FashionClash, collaborating with VanHarten fashiondesigh. Both ‘Eggs are good for your hair’ and ‘Me, my selfie and I’ are well received and performed at (amongst other places) Opera Estate Festival in Italy and the Dutch Moving Futures Festival.
Katja’s most recent project is called ‘iTernal PlayGround’ and is inspired by post-human thoughts, the influence of digital technologies on society and with that the arising questions about the identity of our human body. Through this research she wants to investigate her definition of theatre, choreography and movement. Ipads, flat-screens and the
dancers’ body fuse into unconventional performance formats, questioning the perception of the spectator.

A performance-exhibition
The three performances Katja created in 2014-2015: For iTernity, iNcorporeality and Selfiefy Myself, are combined in the exhibition iTernal
PlayGround. It was performed in a shoppingmall during 6 days at Theaterfestival Boulevard 2015 from 14:00 till 0:30.
iTernal PlayGround proved to be a very fascinating cross-over between
the virtual and the physical public space and was the first result of Katja’s
quest for Nomadic Theatre.

“In the end we’ll all go up in the cloud”
For iTernity is an installation for 4 beamers that project into eternity. It
comments our presence in the digital ‘cloud’ in which we are always
available and maybe even become immortal. The audience is invited
to capture and move the projected images with screens they hold in
their hands. The music is Mozarts ‘Requiem’ sung by an autotuned
Youtube-choir.

“A nomadic performance for 10 iPads and bodies”
iNcorporeality was created for the Dansguerrilla project of Moving Futures with
2nd year students of the Fontys Dansacademie. The iPad is used as a crutch, a
mask, a prothese. The performers move themselves through public space following a system of inverted YouTube: first they record a movie in which the iPad
‘dances’ and then they try to follow it with their bodies. It comments our presence in the fysical and virtual domain and questions our identity. Do we copy or
are we led by our copies?
Incorporeality is further developed with two professional dancers and six students for Cement, STRP Biënnale and Theaterfestival Boulevard 2015.

“A live installation for performer, flatscreen and shoppers”
Selfiefy Myself was created for the ‘Etalageproject’ of Tilburg Dansstad
with dancer Deirdre Griffin (Ireland). It is a four hour performance in
which a performer shows herself and her environment ‘real time’ via a
televisionscreen. Shoppers are invited to walk through and within the installation, thus becoming part of the projected image. Everything is ‘live’,
including the warming up, the make up and the dressing down.
Selfiefy Myself is further developed with handstand and yoga-acrobat Yolaine Dooms for Cement, STRP Biënnale and Theaterfestival Boule- vard
2015.

“A trio for two dancers and an iPad”
Me, my Selfie and I was created for the ‘Distinguished dreams’ project of
the Dutch Dance Festival and FashionClash in collaboration with fashion
designer Annemarije van Harten. It is made for two 15 year old students
of the highschool for dance in Maastricht as an 8 minute performance for
a stage, catwalk or theatre. A sharp, abstract copy-and-paste choreography combined with a cunning costume design and bold technomusic takes
the audience into a short trip of frightening synchronicity.

“This is not a show, this is reality”
A triptych of three solos, created for Festival Cement 2014. Based on
the performative system of Eggs are good for your hair two more performances were made: Anna Blume, inspired by the dadaïstic poem of
Kurt Schwitters, performed by 4th year dance student Josse Vessies and
Frame / Titanic Tralala, created together with Helma Melis but executed by Katja Heitmann herself.
Review Cultuurbewust.nl: “Katja shows a clear signature, even though
the pieces are inspired by very different themes. (…) Her decision to
oppose the actual dance trends is brave. Hopefully it will not oppose
her further development. Most of all, these pieces make one very curious where she will be heading the coming years”.

Eggs are good for your hair was created for the ‘One nights dance’ project of
Dansateliers Rotterdam. It is made for and together with slack-wire artist Melanie Hagedorn. In the performance her circusdiscipline is staged in a very unconventional way, thus commenting our daily roleplaying and masquerades. It
was further developed at Maas Theater en Dans into a 20 minute piece.
