IMPORTANT DATES!!
Dear Parents,
Last Monday Rance Boog, School Council Chairperson, Libby Johnson Deputy Principal and I attended the Independent Public School (IPS) Briefing at the
University Club at UWA. The purpose of the briefing was to capture the philosophy, nature and requirements of autonomy as an Independent Public
School.
Speakers included the Hon Minister for Education, Mr Peter Collier; the Director General Department of Education, Sharyn O‟Neil; IPS principal advisors,
Directors and School Board Chair representatives shared their IPS story.
Key reflections for Mount Claremont Primary School are:

With a bit more flexibility what would we able to do that we couldn‟t do
now?

With increased autonomy how would we improve student outcomes?

Do we have the capacity to become IPS; leadership, financial, school
council, P&C?

Do we have the support of the whole school community?

Are we ready to become IPS in 2017?
The speakers commented that being IPS raised the school‟s profile and community expectations. Each school celebrated their uniqueness.
Stage 2: Development involves registering an expression of interest to attend
two day workshops complemented by action learning tasks to provide structure and support.
It is an exciting time to seek innovation and reform as an Independent Public
School.
NAPLAN 10-12 MAY 2016
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an
annual assessment of all students in years 3,5,7 and 9. Parents of children in
years 3 and 5 have been given a brochure Information for Parents 2016.
STAFFING Ms Elizabeth Storer, teacher - early childhood education has been
appointed to Room 10 on Friday in year 1/2 and Wednesday in kindergarten.
Mr John Szydolowski has been temporarily placed as gardener for term 1 on
Monday and Thursday.

SCHOOL GROUNDS The grass is looking a little dry in patches. The reticulation has been checked and we hope to see some improvement soon. The
school is entitled to 3 days for a gardener but due to the “job freeze” in the Department I am unable to find a replacement gardener for one of the days. If
you can assist with a little bit of weeding or light gardening it would be greatly
appreciated. Special thanks to parents Dean and Samantha Campbell for removing dead trees and cutting back shrubs.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE Students are reminded that the school dress code includes broad brimmed school
hats. The uniform shop has a range of styles to sit all year levels. Baseball caps are not acceptable or sunsmart.
SWIMMING SUCCESS There are many ways for students to celebrate success. This year at the Faction
Swimming Carnival (years 3-6) the school is introducing championship medals for the “Champion Boy and
Girl” for years 3-6. The P&C Association and parent Rachel Tierney have organised faction swimming caps in
the colours of red, blue and yellow . The caps remain the property of the school and are not required to be purchased.
Students will be selected from the Faction Swimming Carnival to attend the Interschool Swimming Carnival.
Many students have participated in after school swimming training organised by the wonderful parents.
All students in years 3-6 will attend the Interschool Swimming Carnival as members of Mount Claremont swimming team or cheer squad.
YEAR 5/6 AIRCONDITIONER An electrical assessment has been undertaken of the faulty air conditioner in
the year5/6 room. The air conditioner will need to be repaired and it may take up to a week.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY INESA We don‟t usually include birthday greetings in the newsletter but Inesa from kindergarten celebrated her first real birthday on Monday 29th February. Happy Birthday Inesa ! Thank you Mrs
Ballios for getting Mount Claremont Primary School and Inesa in the West Australian newspaper. Many thanks
to her kindy friends and parents who came for the photo shoot.
I look forward to the year 5/6 assembly this Friday and catching up with everyone at the P&C Sundowner on
Friday 11 March from 5:00pm

School Lunch Online – Monday and Friday only
Please note that due to the very low numbers currently using the School Lunch Online service,
the providers can no longer service the school every day of the week. Instead, this service will
only be available on Mondays and Fridays each week. The same range of food and drinks will
continue to be available on those days.
This change will be in effect from the week commencing Monday 7 March.
Old hockey sticks wanted
We thought it would be great to have a pool of hockey sticks for children to try out hockey before signing up for a
season. If anyone has an old hockey stick that they are happy to donate, could you please leave them at reception.

Depending on your bank it may take between 3—5 days for your payment to reach our bank account.
If payment could be made within a few days of receiving the notice then your child's attendance at the event will
be assured. Teachers and office staff will not have to spend time issuing reminder emails the day before the
event and you will not have to rush a payment through.
This will make everything flow so much smoother for all of us.
If you are experiencing problems in meeting a cost please do not hesitate too contact me and we can draw up a
repayment schedule.

A note from the Community Health Nurse
Welcome to the new school year. My name is Deb Aggett and I am the Community Health Nurse
who visits your school.
Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may
reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health
Assessment program.
Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information,
assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential.
If you have a concern about your child‟s health or development, please contact me on

School Entry Health Assessment
All children in Western Australia are offered a health assessment during their first year of primary school. This
usually occurs in kindergarten.
A Community Health Nurse will check your child‟s vision, hearing and general development. A form will be sent
home in Term 2 or 3.
Parents please complete and sign the forms. Please return the form to the school office or class teacher, as soon as possible.

Head lice
Tips for preventing head lice
Check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and eggs („nits‟). Use a metal fine tooth „nit‟ comb and plenty
of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still
for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, encourage reading, offer a head
massage
Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible.
Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair
strands from contact with other heads.
Avoid sharing combs or brushes.
Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with
others, or when playing, or hugging.
If your child has head lice please notify their teacher.
Hand washing
Washing hands is the easiest way to protect ourselves from contagious diseases, like colds, influenza and gastroenteritis. Hands should be washed before and after eating or preparing food, after going to the toilet and after nose blowing.
When teaching your child to wash their hands;
Use clean water and soap, making sure they cover their hands and wrists.
Use a brush to clean under nails if they‟re dirty too
Dry their hands with something clean (like a paper towel)
Alcohol based sanitisers are useful when soap and water is not available. Use a half a teaspoon of the product
and encourage your child to rub their hands together until they‟re dry. If you can see dirt on their hands, it is
better to use soap and water.

P&C News – Sundowner reminder
Don‟t forget the P&C annual Sundowner is on Friday 11 March at 5pm in the central garden. There will be a
Magic Show from 5.30-6.15pm in the undercover area which should be great fun for the whole family. There
will be paella to follow for those who have pre-paid and Mountain Fresh fruit juices on sale for $1.00. Also
some music to keep the big kids entertained!
Paella orders:
Just a note to say the paella has NO SEAFOOD. It contains chorizo but is apparently not spicy, other than a
little from the chorizo.
Forms to pre-order paella have been provided by email from your class reps and copies are also available in
the front office. Also in the front office is the box where you can drop in your form and payment.
Please have your form and payment in by this Friday 4 March. You‟ll then get an email confirming your order.
Feel free to bring a picnic dinner if you prefer
