with a little Botox) performed in the almost monastic Haus Julius villa across
the cobblestones. But only those spending the night in art-filled Villa Stephanie
can have all that, plus a personal gym, secluded hammam and private spa suites
with a sauna, whirlpool, fitness center, shower and whatever else a detoxing
Russian princess could desire.
Three days is enough to shed a couple of pounds, gain an inch in height (through
Othman Challouf ’s mind-and-body-bending shiatsu) and even lose some years
(Dr. Manfred Jaeschke’s biological-age machine will determine the health of
your arteries, thus defining how old your body thinks you really are), despite
the temptations of Chef Paul Stradner and nightly cocktails round the Count
di Messina’s piano. Few destination spas can claim such quick results—a Sisley
facial incorporating thermal waters doesn’t hurt, either—but with access to
world-class doctors on call 24-7 and a focus on wellness rather than illness, this
original thermal spa is at last appealing to a younger crowd, one that appreciates
the design-forward gym equipment, the Richard Meier-built Bruda Museum
across the Lichtentaler Allee and a nightclub and casino that are a throwback
to those dubious Roman days of excess. Sanitas Per Aquum is only part of the
pleasures of Villa Stephanie and Baden-Baden. The rest is up to each guest.
