Life Changers in Fenland
(Age UK, Cambridgeshire)
A reminder........... Age Concern Cambridgeshire is
now called Age UK Cambridgeshire. This follows the
amalgamation of Age Concern and Help the Aged nationally.
Age UK Cambridgeshire still incorporates the Life Changers
Service, which offers an advocacy and support service to people
in later life. Many older people find they become overwhelmed
when going through life-changing situations, such as retirement,
bereavement, moving home, ill health, disability or debt.
Sometimes, as we get older, things can just creep up on us and
we don’t manage our affairs as well as we did or, in this
technological age, we feel left out and find it harder to access the
help and information we need and suddenly it seems that we just
cannot cope.
If you are concerned about any financial or housing issues,
please remember you are not alone. We are able to offer you
support to get things back in order, visiting you in your own home
if necessary. See below for our contact details.
Age UK Cambridgeshire is still based in the County Offices in
Chatteris and the Life Changers Service is still run from this
office, as is the information line and the insurance service for
your home, holiday or car insurance needs.

This is a chilly time of year, but they say that activity is the way to keep
warm, and a glance through
shows that Manea is a busy place,
despite its small size, so join in some of those events and keep warm!
A word of thanks to Lynda Bubb who has stood down from the Manea Connect
Committee chair after two years of dedicated service, and also to Carol
Eshelby. Thank you both for your valued contribution.
Thanks also to all who supported our two fundraising events, Tombola on 22nd

MANEA GROUP
For the second year running, we held a ‘welcome to everyone’ Cheese and Wine
in the Church Rooms in October. It was a very convivial evening and almost
£130 was raised towards the purchase of equipment for the hospital. Carla
Stevens and Maxine Chapman attended from the hospital and brought
everyone up to date with the building project and the improvements to the
Minor Injuries Unit ~ the latter having been funded by the Friends. There
was also the opportunity for ‘any questions’ from the guests.
If you would like to join the FODH Manea Group Committee, please come along
to our next meeting (which is also the AGM) on Monday 17th January 2011
at 7.30pm in the back room of the Village Hall.

Local History ~ A Call for Help.....
Mike Harrison is researching the crash of an RAF Halifax bomber, which came down
opposite Colony Farm, near Manea on 25th April 1944. Six of the seven-man crew, including Mike’s
uncle, Sgt N M Harrison, died in the crash, and Mike is hoping that someone local to the area may
remember the event and provide any information at all which may help his research.
The aircraft, piloted by members of the RAF Volunteer Reserve, was returning to RAF Holme in
Yorkshire following a mission to Karlsruhe when it was attacked by a German ME410 at 3,400 feet.
The rear gunner, F/Sgt John Anderson, was the sole survivor of the crash, and was treated at RAF
Hospital, Ely, after being rescued by Welney Fire Brigade.

ART CLASS UPDATE
Manea Art Group started on 19th October 2009 and is now a well-attended
fun session every Monday morning.
In our progressive and enthusiastic group we have covered watercolour work,
acrylics, drawing, perspective, impressionistic painting, portraits and the use of
the palette knife. Working alongside fellow artists has allowed individuals to
improve their own techniques.
Thanks to all our artists for making the
group such a success. Watch out for us in
the spring, as we wander the village with
our easels and paint brushes!

Wildlife in Manea
Friends who live in hillier parts tell me how depressing it must be for a nature-lover like me
to reside in a flat, featureless wilderness like the Fens, devoid of wildlife and trees. I
smile and tell them that the Fens are a real haven for wildlife; it’s just a case of looking in
the right places.
Anglers at Manea Pit will tell you, for example, that apart from the coots, moorhens,
grebes and other waterfowl, sleepy grass snakes can be spotted swimming lazily around the
lake margins in spring and early summer, no doubt hunting small frogs, following a long
enforced fast throughout the preceding winter.
Barn owls are often spotted, usually at dawn or dusk, as they quarter the field margins
hunting voles or field mice. Kestrels are probably the most frequently spotted raptors,
hanging motionless in the air alongside our Fen roads. The very presence of these hunters
in quite large numbers suggests that there is no shortage of the small mammals on which
they feed. Two-legged hunters, illegal hare coursers, often travel many miles to visit the
Fens, proving that we also have no shortage of hares in the area.
My favourite creatures are those which are seldom seen. A couple of years ago we
watched a family of stoats playing in the road near Purls Bridge. Not far from the
same spot, I later watched a tiny weasel
carry a small rabbit, much larger
than itself, along the bank of a drain.
Stoats are a fair bit larger than
weasels and can be identified by their
black- tipped tails. Both move
rapidly, so you’ll need to be quick to spot
one. A fast-moving
weasel seen out of the corner of an eye
looks rather like a
vole which has been stretched!
Our Manea gardens are great places to view nature in comfort. Garden visitors, not always
welcome, include foxes,
badgers, hedgehogs, rabbits
and numerous bird species, of
which perhaps the least
popular must be the Grey
Heron - if you have a fish pond!

our garden for many weeks
until he realised that we had
sealed every gap around our
ponds from which he might
steal our fish! No doubt he’ll
be back to try again as soon
as the weather warms up.

Manea Pit will need a new name before long if Manea Parish Council’s impressive
progress at improving the former clay pit and its environment continues. ‘Pit’
seems such a derogatory term for our beautiful woodland-fringed lake, which was
acquired for the village in 2008.
To date, a surfaced access way has been
created at the southern end of the pit,
the small car park has been surfaced, and
numerous
improvements
made
to
footpaths, bank-side and underwater
vegetation, and angling stations. Fish
restocking has been carried out, and
more is planned. The small holding ponds
have been improved and linked, deep water warning signs have been put in place,
and a picnic area has been created among the trees which fringe the playing field.
An amenity area has been provisionally planned, subject to further discussion.
The Parish Council is working with the Wildlife Trust as part of a long-term
strategy to conserve and protect this important site.
The Playing Field is to have a new pavilion, but priority work was carried out last
year to improve the CCTV provision and electrical installations currently on site.
The existing toilets were repaired following vandal damage. The car park has been
surfaced, and the new Skate Park was completed last autumn at a cost of £59,500
plus VAT. Consideration is being given to the possible future provision of an
outdoor table tennis facility.

GAP
With several inches of snow or a heavy frost covering everything, the last thing
on most of our minds in January is the garden. With a few exceptions, flowers
will be notable by their absence or by their wilted, dejected appearance. Most of
the vegetables will have gone by now, unless you had the foresight to plant
brassicas such as savoy, kale, or broccoli for example. This lack of edible
produce in the early part of the year inspired the term ‘Hungry Gap.’
Keen gardeners will already be sowing seeds of suitable varieties of onion or
tomato, to be started off in greenhouse, conservatory or on a window sill. For
many of us though, this is a time for planning, for browsing seed catalogues or
wandering pensively through chilly garden centres seeking inspiration.
Our planning can be helped by observation. Snowdrops and crocuses brighten late
winter and early spring, and the cheerful yellow flowers of winter jasmine
) and mahonia are a welcome sight on a gloomy winter’s
(
day. So if you have room, why not make a note to put in some of these later
when conditions improve? This time next year you’ll appreciate your foresight.
Canny gardeners take the long view, and try to have something in flower at all
times of the year.

Block Fen Halloween Weekend - A big thank you to all of you
who came along and joined in the Halloween Fun. Thanks to you
we were able to raise over £1,000 to help improve the facilities
for the animals housed at the Centre. As I write we are
preparing for the Christmas Fair and I feel sure that this will also
be well supported; will report in the next issue.
Block Fen is licensed to hold 57 dogs and 72 cats - consequently we use vast quantities
of dog and cat food. Recently the shelves have begun to look very sparse. so we are
desperate for donations of dry complete food and tinned complete food. All donations can
be left at Tesco in March and Wisbech, or Sainsbury's in March. Alternatively, why not
come along to the centre to drop food off and have a look around at the same time. As the
centre costs £1,400 per day to run we are extremely grateful for all the food that is donated.
Block Fen relies greatly on volunteers - You can spend as much time as you wish
volunteering: from as little as an hour a week to a full day and we are very grateful for all
the time that our volunteers give. We would ask you to come along and join in our
volunteer induction to begin with and discuss what areas you would like to volunteer for.
We have dog walking, cat socialisers, kennel and cattery cleaners, caring for the small
animals and reception assistance. In addition, we are looking for volunteers to help with
Vegetable gardeners know that carrots love our Fenland soil, and main-crop
varieties such as New Red Intermediate can be sown as late as July and will
produce roots right through the winter. Mark your calendar now to sow some
carrots in July, and reap the rewards next winter. Beware slugs though; they
too love carrots!
Crocuses and snowdrops look best when planted in drifts ~ groups of plants,
often all of the same colour to add impact. Make a calendar note to yourself for
autumn as a reminder to plant bulbs. Dwarf daffodils, such as the pretty
Rip Van Winkle, with it’s fluffy double flowers, are a great follow-on from the
crocuses, then come the tulips, and then...........

Love Food Hate Waste
Manea Connect Committee would like to invite all other groups and organisations within
Manea to take part in an event to be held in the Spring ~ a Love Food Hate Waste Fair ~
date to be confirmed. The idea behind the event is to encourage everyone to think of ways
in which food, which would normally be thrown away, can be transformed into something
both edible and nutritious!
Over £12billion of HOUSEHOLD food is wasted in the UK each year, which includes a
staggering 700,000 packets of unopened sweets and chocolates each day! The wasted
food is enough to fill 760 olympic-sized swimming pools, and doesn’t include supermarket
or hotel/restaurant waste. This represents £50 per month for the average household ~
what a waste of money!
We will be contacting representatives of all Manea groups over the coming weeks to provide
them with more details. Meanwhile, please visit the LFHW website, which is quite
inspirational ~ www.lovefoodhatewaste.com. Any individuals who would like to be involved
with the event are equally welcome.

Within a few years, Manea was to become a comparative metropolis with the arrival
of the railway. Manea station opened on 14th January 1847, and the railway needed
Stationmasters, Porters and Signalmen, not to mention a Station Road. Manea was
growing! Records show that workers in Manea in 1851 included Tailors, Cobblers,
Shoe Makers, Schoolteacher, Bakers, Butchers, Carpenters, Inn Keepers and,
perhaps not surprisingly, a number of Beer Sellers. There would certainly have
been a Blacksmith or two as well. Nevertheless, at least 50% of Manea’s population,
including women and children, still worked on the land at that time.
It is easy nowadays to underestimate the
importance of the railway to a small rural community
like Manea. There was no electricity in 1847, no
running water or indoor plumbing, and no motorised
transport until the railway arrived. Unless you
owned a horse, a trip to Chatteris would have meant
a two hour walk, not a 15 minute car drive.
The railway opened up our village to the many incomers who were seeking work, or
simply a new place to settle. However, it also opened up previously unheard-of
travel possibilities for those Manea residents who could afford the 1d per mile
third-class fare to travel by train. 1851 was the year that Queen Victoria and
Prince Albert opened the Great Exhibition in London, and with the coming of the
railway, adventurous Manea residents could go and visit this wonder of the age.
In today’s money, the whole return trip would have cost around 50p.
Sounds like a bargain!

MONTHLY COMPETITIONS
In 1841, Manea was a very much smaller place than it would later become, and only
the name Fox jumped out at me from the census. Further investigation revealed
a Hankins family living in Chatteris at the time, and Masons in Doddington.
Please come and join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month.
Our meetings are held at 7.30pm
at the Church Rooms, Park Road ~ next to Londis.
In January we celebrate our 4th birthday as a WI in Manea
so we will be having a bit of a do. Come and join in the fun.
We have lots of interesting evenings planned for 2011: check
out the posters around the village for each month’s details.
During 2010 our activities ranged from dog agility to spooky
Fenland stories for Halloween, crafting evenings to cream tea
quiz evenings, fish and chip suppers to talks on recycling!
There was something to appeal to everyone, plus a great
opportunity to socialise and enjoy a good chat.
In 2010 we had 30 members, whose ages range from mid
twenties to sixty-five plus, all of whom are encouraged to voice
their ideas regarding activities.
Why don’t you join us all too? It’s a great chance to make new
friends and catch up with old ones! Your first meeting is
FREE, so come and check us out! We look forward to welcoming
you for what I am sure will be the first of many meetings. The
annual membership fee offers very good value for money.

Home-Start Fenland Needs Your Help Home-Start Fenland is a voluntary
organisation offering support, friendship and practical help to young families in their own
homes.
We cover March, Whittlesey and Chatteris and the villages in between, and the service is
free and confidential. Being a parent, wherever you live or whatever your situation, is not
easy. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life. Some
parents lose confidence in their ability to cope, and most can remember a time when they
would have liked someone to turn to.
How Can Home-Start Help? Home-Start volunteers visit regularly, offering friendly support,
understanding (Home-Start volunteers are parents too!), reassurance, a listening ear and
confidentiality. Volunteers are of all ages and backgrounds. They need no specific
qualifications, but they do need the ability to listen with understanding, to maintain
confidentiality and a commitment to the Scheme and to the families they visit. Full training
and support are provided.
