What an exciting way to start
the 2015-16 school year at St.
John’s Academy. In early
August we had new playground
equipment installed. The majority of the playground’s expense
was covered by our loyal alumni and their estate funds. We are
blessed to have received these
estate gifts. This brought a
whole new level of excitement
to SJA and the kids have
absolutely loved it. On

September 3rd we celebrated
our 125th birthday with a full
day of activities. The day started off with Bishop John
Folda blessing our new playground and our new processional cross which was donated by the Michael Ebertz
family in memory of his mother, Glory Ebertz, Class of
1945. This cross is used at the All-School Masses. After
the blessings, Bishop Folda along with Monsignor Wald
and Father Mulligan visited all the classrooms to say hello
and take pictures. What a blessing this was for our students. After lunch Bishop led Mass at SJA which was very
well attended. At the conclusion of Mass birthday cake was
enjoyed by all students, teachers and guests.
Two weeks later SJA celebrated Grandparent’s Day with
a beautiful Mass at the Basilica led by Monsignor Wald. At
the conclusion of Mass we had a great turnout for lunch at
the Academy.
Our next exciting event for the fall was the 25th Annual
HOPE Dinner & Auction. What a wonderful evening this
was for all of us. After months of preparation by our
HOPE Committee it all came together wonderfully. We
had another sell-out crowd along with many unique auction items and an outstanding dinner provided by the
Knights of Columbus. We had an amazing turnout of volunteers throughout the whole event which is of utmost
importance to make this event a success. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the auction.
This is now my sixth year as principal and my experience continues to be so rewarding. My family and I are so
blessed to be a part of this special community. My oldest
son is now in 9th grade at Jamestown High School and my
other son is now in 8th grade at the Jamestown Middle
School. My daughter is currently a fourth grader at St.
John’s Academy. My two sons are still very involved with
the school and spend quite a bit of time here volunteering
and attending Faith Formation.
SJA welcomed two new teachers to our staff this fall.
Melissa Mutschler was hired as a fifth grade teacher after
completing her student teaching at SJA last fall and working in the Kids’ Kingdom classroom in the spring. Melissa
is a Jamestown native and a recent graduate of the
University of Jamestown. Our new sixth grade teacher is
no stranger to Jamestown or St. John’s Academy. Yvette
Yatskis was hired last spring after spending 14 years in the
Jamestown Public School District. Yvette is a SJA alum
and all of her children attended SJA. Please welcome
Melissa and Yvette to our staff.
The Kids’ Kingdom program continues to excel working
with students ages 3-5 led by Jill Mahoney and Kirstie
Dobson. Jill is in her 16th year as the pre-school teacher
and Kirstie is in her first year as the pre-school aide after
spending last year as the assistant cook. Kids’ Kingdom
has 47 students in the program.
The Pre-Kindergarten program is now in its seventh year
with 30 students enrolled. Through six years we have had
approximately 200 students go through this program. It has
greatly benefited students and prepares them very well for
kindergarten. I am very pleased and excited with our overall enrollment numbers as we have 178 students in
Kindergarten through grade 6 which leads to our highest
enrollment since the late 1990’s with 255 students. We are
happy to have so many families attending our school and
appreciate all the support we get from everyone involved
with the school and community.
This is our fifth year of St. John Academy’s ChildCare
program, directed by Courtney Oliver in her first year. We
had 45 children attend during the summer and have 82
children using our services during the school year. We are
very excited about the program as it offers our families a
reliable and trustworthy service. Feel free to contact
Courtney or myself if you would like to learn more about
the program.
Last winter we completed our Technology Challenge
with $140,000 donated for the purchase of new technology,
specifically iPads for the classroom and improving our
wireless infrastructure. Shortly after completing the challenge, we purchased over 100 iPads with each teacher
being issued an iPad and students in 5th and 6th grade
going one-to-one. Each classroom, K-4 has 6 iPads for
their classrooms. This summer we completed our last stage
with new access points placed throughout the building.
This has been a wonderful addition to our school as the
teachers utilize the iPads daily with their students. Thanks
to all of you for your wonderful donations.
Our students continue to utilize the 23 Simple Touch
Nooks with Glow lights for the library/media center. We
also have 24 computers in the computer lab with our teachers utilizing it daily to help explore the world. Our teachers
do a great job of continuing education and are always bettering themselves so they can provide their best to the students. We have a very dedicated and committed staff and
they share their love for St. John’s Academy daily.

Feel free to stop in and visit at any time. I always enjoy
listening to stories and traditions pertaining to St. John’s
Academy.
In closing, I would like to thank everyone for making
me feel so welcome during my four years on the job. I
can’t believe how fast it has gone, but I am enjoying every
minute of it. I am blessed that we have so many caring
people who love and support this school.

FACE’S “100 By 40” Campaign: We’re Almost There!
The Foundation for
Advancement of Christian
Education was founded in 1976
as a locally-controlled endowment fund with a single mission: Securing the future of St.
John’s Academy. Because it is
dedicated to SJA’s long term
success, FACE has preserved the charitable contributions
received from our generous donors over the last 39 years.
Only income from investments is given to SJA. The capital
donations will continue to create funding for the many generations of SJA students to come. FACE’s annual contribution is often, and accurately, referred to as “the eternal 5
percent.” Since its founding, FACE has given St. John’s Academy
a total of nearly $2 million. Those gifts have been used primarily to fund tuition scholarships, so that the benefits of a
Catholic Christian education are available to all families in
our area, regardless of their financial circumstances. For the
2015-16 school year, FACE’s board authorized a pilot program to provide assistance to families utilizing the Pre-K
program. FACE grants also have helped pay for classroom
technology upgrades, teacher salaries, and construction of
the Zebedee Center.
In 2012, the FACE board embarked on the “100 by 40”
campaign. The goal was to expand our capital base, so that
FACE could provide $100,000 in annual funding to SJA by
2016, FACE’s 40th year. The board is extremely pleased to
report that FACE met its goal for the 2015-16 school year.
However, FACE’s president Walt Nieland says the “100 by
40” campaign is not done yet. “We got to $100,000 this
year because the stock market was so strong in 2012, ’13,
and ’14. But the market goes down, too,” Walt said. “We’ve
raised about 80% of our original capital goal. We’re almost
there, but we need that last 20% to ensure that FACE can
give at least $100,000 to St. John’s every year.”
Helping FACE can help you, too. All donations are
deductible on federal and state taxes. Even better, North
Dakota residents who give $5,000 or more to FACE may
qualify for a 40% credit against their state income taxes.
Depending on your tax bracket, the net cost to the donor
can be well under 50% of the gift amount. Please consult
your personal tax advisor. To obtain an informational

Hello! I’m Courtney Oliver. I
came to Jamestown from Mankato,
Minnesota in 2009 as a college
sophomore with a track scholarship
and big dreams of becoming the
next Erin Andrews on ESPN. I
graduated from Jamestown College
in 2013 with a bachelors degree in communication. I began
nannying two little girls while the reporter job search began
and discovered a new-found love for children. After that
experience, I decided childcare was the place I needed to
be. I started working for Bright Beginnings Learning Center
in the fall of 2013 as a preschool age teacher and loved
every minute of it. In addition to childcare, I’m also very
involved in coaching gymnastics at the Jamestown
Gymnastics Club. I’m excited to bring my passion for
enriching children’s lives to SJA.

Hi! My name is Tara Steel. I
recently moved to Jamestown and I
am so excited to be starting my first
year at St. John’s Academy.
Everyone has been so warm and
welcoming! I have 3 beautiful children named C.J., Sarah and Jayson.
I am also engaged to a wonderful man named Adam. My
hobbies include cooking, singing, spending time with my
family and going to the movies. I look forward to many
happy years here in Jamestown. God Bless!
Melissa Mutschler
5th Grade Teacher
Hello! My name is Melissa
Mutschler. I am originally from
Jamestown but ventured off to
Scottsdale, Arizona for a few years,
only to return to back home to raise
my son, Roman, closer to friends
and family and finish college at the
University of Jamestown. While attending the University
of Jamestown I was able to do my student teaching here at
St. John’s Academy. It was such an enriching and rewarding experience I decided I didn’t want to leave and am now
teaching alongside Mrs. Mahoney in the Kids Kingdom
program! In obtaining my degree in Education, I spent a
lot of time in many different schools in the area but there’s
a few things about St. John’s Academy that really stood out
for me and that’s the feeling of family and faith. One of
my most memorable experiences was the very first time I
attended an all school Mass. Listening to all the children
sing the bible hymns, pray for guidance and protection
while putting their Faith in God was such a moving experience. Each and every one of the staff members have been
so kind, helpful and welcoming. I am very blessed to be a
part of St. John’s Academy!
Yvette Yatskis
6th Grade Teacher
When I attended St. John’s
Academy as an elementary student
from 1974-1980, I would have
never guessed that one day I would
come back as the 6th grade teacher!
I am thankful and blessed that my
journey has brought me back to
SJA! I graduated from Jamestown High School in 1986. I
attended the College of St. Benedict for one year until I
followed my future husband, John, to NDSU where I graduated with a major in English Education. We married in
1989 and returned to Jamestown in 1990. I taught 9th
grade English at JHS for one year and then moved to the
7th grade. I knew I had found my niche; I love working
with middle schoolers! As much as I adore teaching, I took
some time off to raise my children. I went back to the
classroom when my children were school age and was fortunate to find myself back with 7th graders. After teaching
a total of 14 years for the public school, I was overjoyed to
have the opportunity to make a huge change in my career.
All of the things I truly love are embodied in my new position at SJA. I love to teach, and now I will be able to teach
all subjects to my students...what an exciting adventure!
I’ve mentioned my love for middle schoolers, so 6th
graders? Awesome!! I have always dreamed of being able
to teach at a Catholic school...dreams do come true! My
love and passion for teaching and learning drive me to be
an energetic and creative teacher. My goal is that my students will find joy and success in pushing themselves to
accomplish more than they ever thought possible. We will
encounter challenges and work hard, no doubt, but we will
also have an amazing time together!

Hey there! My name is Sara and
I'm the new assistant lunch lady for
St. John's Academy. I live in the
country near Montpelier where I
graduated HS from. Baking and
cooking is something I always
enjoy and working with and seeing
the children everyday at the school puts a smile on my
face! I am blessed to have such a wonderful job.

Class of 1965 - 50th Class Reunion
Our reunion is now over, and I will never forget it!
Patt McKenzie Germann and I began trying to find our
classmates on the internet just after the first of the year,
and were so excited each time a classmate would contact
us. This would be our first reunion since graduation, and
many of us hadn’t seen each other in 50 years. Our class
will always hold the title of being the last high school class
to graduate from St. John’s Academy. The year was 1965.
We were given this sad news in the spring of our sophomore year. It was a real shock for many in Jamestown and
our whole school. Several students transferred to the public
high school that following fall including the entire class
behind us. Our anticipation was high as we met for a Meet and
Greet, September 18th. We chose the KC Hall, where we
once had physical education classes and played basketball.
Items of memorabilia were brought back by many and
were so much fun to look at.
Conversation and friendships picked right up where we
left off 50 years ago. I couldn’t help but think, as I looked
at everyone what nice people I graduated with and they
were all so much fun to be with again. The rest of the weekend included a tour of St. John’s
given by Peggy Etzold. For all of us it was like walking
back in time. As we entered each classroom and walked
the halls we shared memories we hadn’t thought of in
years. You couldn’t help but wish some of the teachers,
priests, nuns, and support staff would have been there just
waiting for us. Saturday evening a dinner was held at Sabir’s Buffalo
Grill and The Most Nostalgic Trophy was awarded to Fred
Eagleson for still having and being able to wear his 1965
Letter Jacket. Sunday we attended Mass at St. James Basilica in a
group, which we dedicated to our deceased classmates. As I look back now, I feel such gratitude for my
Christian education, and to my classmates for their friendship and support growing up. I know St. John’s will always
holds a special spot in each of our hearts. One can only
wonder why we waited so long to have our first reunion,
but the wait sure made it special! Thanks to everyone for
