into its new home, a building
designed by Renzo Piano on the
location of the former Rodin cinema,
73 Avenue des Gobelins,

Robin Gatto - L’Ecran fantastique
Christophe Gans is a kind of national treasure,
a technical genius gifted with a profound belief in the language
of images.
Not for a single moment does Gans try to reclaim the poet’s masterpiece; rather, in a soft and
gentle atmosphere reminiscent of a waking dream, he attempts to recreate its inherent magic
through scenes of breathtaking, celestial beauty, the likes of which have never been seen
before in a French production […] The generosity displayed by Gans blows away everything
in its path, and the novelistic ambitions of Beauty and the Beast raise French filmmaking to
nobler heights.

its library.

by Oprah Winfrey, notably with Brad Pitt as
Executive Producer, is among the films
produced and distributed by Pathé that made
a big impact internationally. The film was
nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and
won both the Oscar and the Golden Globe for
Best Original Song for Glory.
Selma, the first feature film ever to broach the
subject of Martin Luther King’s fight for civil
rights for African-Americans, was released
internationally at the end of 2014. The film
was sold to 50 territories, generating over $50
million at the box-office in North America alone.
Japanese Magazine UCHUSEN
Beauty and the Beast, directed by Christophe Gans and sold to over 60 territories, was notably a hit with
audiences in Japan where it generated $10 million in revenue.

PATHE 2014 FILMS
LIVING WORKS
In 2014, Pathé took part in commemoration events to mark
the Centenary of WWI.
WOODEN CROSSES
by Raymond Bernard
Wooden Crosses is a film adapted from the novel by Roland Dorgelès, inspired by the author’s personal
experiences during WWI. Raymond Bernard (1891-1977) has made it a testimonial film whose realism,
both visual and sound, is unprecedented. Produced by Pathé-Natan and presented on its release in 1932
as an event of national importance, the film met with resounding success.
In 2014, Pathé carried out restoration works on the film returning it to its former glory.
The film’s A negative, discovered in the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) archives, was digitalized
and restored in 4K. The entire restoration process was entrusted to the laboratory Immagine Ritrovata in
Bologne, and took 14 months to complete.
This restored version was released in theaters on November 12, 2014. The film was also released for the first
time on DVD and Blu-ray, winning the 2014 Syndicat de la critique’s award for Best Historical DVD/Blu-ray.
We no longer felt we were simply doing our job as
filmmakers, with fervor and heart, but rather,
we had the impression – perhaps the slightly naïve
impression – that each of us, in his own small way,
was participating in something sacred, in a great
work for peace.
Raymond Bernard
FOUR FILM CENTENNIALS
Four silent short films from the Pathé library, shot in 1915 and 1916,
were also restored and released on DVD. These works of fiction – For
The Homeland, The Bridge of the Yser, A Wartime Christmas and The
Little Toy Soldiers – were made during the WWI as part of propaganda
campaigns. They were restored by Pathé, who entrusted the work to
Digimage, and given new soundtracks composed by Stephen Horne.

PROGRAMMING
Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé are a key player in France’s rich and diverse
cinema scene, with 466 new films gracing their screens in 2014. Gaumont and Pathé
welcome all types of film to their theaters, dubbed or in their original language.
However, special attention is given to French cinema. Audience satisfaction is high
on the agenda, whatever their tastes may be.
The “Autre Regard” label is one of the ways in which this specific support
for independent films is conveyed. This special label was awarded to
8 films in 2014, and the results were communicated in all of the theaters
on the circuit.
Important Events in the French Provinces
Special attention has also been given to events around France, notably through “Once upon a time…” events
hosted in 40 movie theaters on the circuit. “Once upon a time…” gives movie lovers the chance to discover
– or rediscover – films that have made movie history. Other events include a number of films festivals such as
the Festival Lumière in Pathé movie theaters in Lyon; the Festival Premiers Plans at Gaumont Angers and the
Annecy International Animated Film Festival at Pathé Annecy.

OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS
The OL Groupe, a major player in the field of
sport and entertainment in France, is structured
around Olympique Lyonnais, premier league
football club. Pathé has been a shareholder
of the OL Groupe since 1999.
In 2014, works at the stadium that serves as
the basis for the OL Groupe’s development, and
in the financing of which Pathé took a part,
continued in Décines near Lyon. Over 1,000
people have been employed at the site.
Structural works are advancing on schedule, and
OL plans to put the sporting facility into service by
late 2015-early 2016. In doing so, the club will
become one of an elite circle of great European
clubs to own their home stadium.
The stadium will host six UEFA Euro 2016 matches,
including one 1/8th final and a semi-final, and
the FIFA 2019 Women’s World Cup, with the
opening match and the final of the competition.
In terms of sporting results, at the end
of 2014, the men’s team was ranked 2nd
in the French National Championships, and
the women’s team was the top-ranked team
in their league, with the aim to win the 9th
consecutive title of this competition.
