President`s Letter - Rowayton Civic Association
Fall/Winter 2016
The Rowayton Civic Association
Committed to Community
President’s Letter
Andy Meyerson
RCA Board President
As the Summer sun sets and the Autumn harvest
arrives, Rowayton continues to demonstrate why
it’s such a glorious place to live. The New England
air becomes crisp and cool, the foliage takes on
beautiful colors and farm stands fill with mums,
crunchy apples and orange pumpkins. As vacations end and school starts, we reflect on a
Summer that was filled with beaching, boating,
and jumping off the Bell Island bridge, with
RCA events that filled our weekend calendars:
• The Comedy Weekend brought two nights of laughter in May
• The Memorial Day Parade reminded us that we live in a small town with a
tight knit community with much to be thankful for
• The Father’s Day Fun Run tested our fitness and stamina in a casual 5k run
• Independence Day brought an afternoon and evening filled with music
and the best Fireworks display in Fairfield County
• The River Ramble had the biggest crowds ever with beer, food and game
tickets selling out
• The Summer Music Festival continued to offer an unprecedented assembly
of talent every Sunday evening
• The Cinema on the Sound debuted with 3 fun movies in beautiful outdoor
settings
• The Ladrigan Swim Races closed the summer season, with a day of fun at
Bayley
Autumn is an equally beautiful time in Rowayton. Although the days get
shorter, and the temperatures get cooler, it’s still plenty nice outside to enjoy
our beaches, our waterways, and our beautiful walking village. During the
Fall, the RCA maintains a calendar of events enjoyed by all ages; Youth Soccer
and Underground start right after Labor Day, the Fourth Annual Oktoberfest
is scheduled for October 1, and the Halloween Haunted House will take
place on October 23. Then to bring 2016 to a close, the RCA stages our trio of
holiday celebrations: Light Up Rowayton, the annual Santa Run and our much
celebrated Nativity Pageant.

This past year the RCA made a big effort to go beyond just organizing events
and granting financial assistance to non-profit groups. We’ve made an effort
to increase our communication to the community so that residents are
abreast of events, hearings and public gatherings. We’ve grown our email list,
we’ve migrated to a new Facebook page, and we’ve redesigned our website
www.rowaytoncurrents.com to have a cleaner look that includes a calendar
of events and all Rowayton happenings.
The RCA continually looks to improve our promise stated in our mission,
which is to enrich the lives of Rowayton residents through providing cultural
programs, educational events and supporting local community initiatives.
To accomplish this mission, the RCA Board now has 25 members, who are
dedicated, committed, and hardworking whose volunteerism allows us to
have so many wonderful things to enjoy in town.
The RCA wouldn’t exist without donations made by generous residents,
friends and sponsors. As our events continue to grow, so do our needs for
additional support. Please consider donating to our upcoming annual fund
or sharing your talents by joining the RCA as a Board Member. Your support
allows us to give back, not only to our own events, but also to the educational and cultural institutions that make our little community truly special.
We have been fortunate enough this year to provide grants to: Rowayton
Elementary School, Roton Middle School, Brien McMahon High School,
Rowayton Gardeners, Rowayton Little League, Underground, Shakespeare
on the Sound, The Rowayton Library and Norwalk Youth Basketball.
More and more I hear from residents “Thank you for what the RCA does
for the town.” Hearing that and knowing that the RCA makes a difference
is truly one of the greatest rewards. I’m going on my 18th year as a resident
and it’s been an honor to lead the RCA filled with amazing volunteers who
also love making a difference.
See you around town.

RCA’s Rowayton Fun Run
RCA Summer
Highlights
Rowayton Trash Bash Cleaned Up
The RCA and Rowayton Historical Society
teamed up again to make the 2016
Trash Bash a tremendous success, with
many Rowaytonites pitching in to help
keep our town beautiful - and clean! On
April 23, participants cleaned everywhere
from Rowayton School Pond and Bayley
Beach all the way to Wilson Avenue and
Martin Luther King Blvd! Thank you to the local organizations who formed
Trash Teams – the Fire Department, Gardners Club, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts,
Rowayton Basketball and Rowayton Tennis Association to name just a few.
And a special thanks to our High School “Ambassadors” who organized the
teams and assigned locations. Lastly, thank you to Michael Diamond and his
son Leo for lending his pickup and hauling the bounty at the end of the day!
What a great day to be a Father or anyone else
in Rowayton for this year’s RCA Father’s
Day Fun Run held on Sunday, June 19. The
weather was perfect for a run - sunny and
warm, not hot or humid. It helped to bring
out what might have been a record number
of runners to enjoy a spirited run through our
beautiful community.
The Premier 16-44 Age Groups were won by
Jena Hines and Ajax Diamandis for the short
course (2.2 miles) and by Amanda Duggins
and Reyes Moreno for the long course (4.4 miles). Congratulations! All other
finishers’ places and times can be seen here - https://runscore.runsignup.
com/Race/Results/?raceId=21040&customResultsPageId=7570.
As always, it was not just the race results but the taking part in one of the yearly
RCA events that makes Rowayton a special place for all ages. We want to thank
all our many volunteers who helped check runners and a special thank you to
the Rowayton Fire Department and the Sixth Taxing District Commissioners.
Cinema on the Sound was a success under the stars
Comedy Night Becomes Comedy Weekend
The RCA’s Comedy Night fundraiser should
now be called “Comedy Weekend” as
both Friday and Saturday night’s shows
(May 20 & 21) were a resounding success.
Rowayton residents and neighbors packed
their picnics to enjoy an evening under the
tent at the Community Center for laughter
and dancing. Each night’s guest experienced
a night of original wit and humor thanks to a
total of eight professional stand-up comedians from New York City. After the show, the
dance floor opened to tunes selected by one
of New York City’s elite DJs.
We would like to thank the many volunteers for their help and the support
of each guest that attended. Comedy Night is the RCA’s most popular and
successful event and the proceeds help the RCA fulfill its mission to enrich the
lives of its residents by providing cultural programs, educational scholarships
and supporting community initiatives. Mark your calendar for next year’s show
on May 19 and 20.
The Memorial Day Parade Marched On
On May 29, just after the RCA Memorial Day
Parade had marched through town, Kerry
Kelly of Florida and his sister Kim Kelly of
North Carolina presented the wreath in
honor of their father Howard Kelly, who
passed in February of this year. Strong ties
to Rowayton, where their parents grew up
and grandparents, aunts and uncles lived,
brought them back to share memories of
years past. Owen Cottle, 92, who also grew
up here, read portions of a letter Howard’s
brother wrote of his experience as a POW.
We were blessed with a gorgeous weather
and those who return to share a poignant event in their lives and history of
Rowayton. Thanks to the RCA board and RCA volunteers who make this the
honored iconic event possible.

This summer’s first attempt at Cinema on
the Sound, put on by the partnership of
the RCA and Rowayton Library, was met
with overwhelming success. All three movies... Brooklyn, Guardians of the Galaxy and
Zootopia attracted great crowds of all ages.
Thank you to everyone in the community for
coming out and making these evenings such
wonderful events! We welcome any suggestions/comments as we continue to build
on this momentum in the years to come.
We’d like to thank everyone who helped
us to bring this to life from our sponsors to
our volunteers. Special thanks to Rowayton Market and Valencia Luncheria
for their support. We look forward to many more star filled nights together.
All Fired Up at the RCA’s July 4 Fireworks
Yet another great Rowayton 4th of July celebration with Atlas Pyrovision putting on a
truly stunning show. The on-shore wind provided a little more of an up close view than
years past and even a few souvenirs floating
from the sky. Rowayton’s fireworks are in
a large part funded by monetary and truly
generous contributions from local organizations. We absolutely couldn’t do it without
the following organizations annual support:
the Commissioners of the 6th Taxing District,
Roton Point Association, Wee Burn Country
Club, The Tokeneke Club, Rowayton Beach
Association, Pine Point Association, Bell Island Improvement Association and
Rowayton Yacht Club.
The RCA would also like to thank the following people and organizations for
their help in making the 2016 fireworks a success:
Ed Carlson, Rowayton Fire Marshall; Rowayton Fire Chief Todd DeKlyn; the
Rowayton Volunteer Fire Department; Andy Meyerson and Jeff Buda who
organize the RCA’s fabulous Summer Music Festival; the Norwalk Police
Department; Norwalk Hospital EMTs; the Noroton Marine Fire Department,
Maggie Lederer and Gerard Broussard who volunteered and helped with
parking, and key personnel at Bayley Beach including Don Wilson, and Sue
and Melissa Bucciarelli.
The 2016 RCA Summer Music Festival
Packing up the cooler, laying down
a picnic blanket, visiting with friends
and listening to great tunes is how
we’ve all become accustomed to
spending Sunday evenings in the
summer. The 2016 RCA Summer
Music Festival provided another 10
opportunities to continue that
Rowayton rite of summer, featuring
one of the best line ups of rising,
talented acts we’ve ever had.
Rowayton Rambled on July 9th
Scents of hot dogs and hamburgers filled
the air on July 9th along the Five Mile River
for the 46th Annual River Ramble. It was a
great fun day! We celebrated the true spirit
of Rowayton with food, fun, laughter and a
successful auction. All this activity plus live
music!
For kids young and old there wasn’t a lack
of action with the petting zoo, face painting,
spectacular bounce games and slides and the
ever-popular dunk tank. Local merchants and
artisans shared their handmade and artistic
impressions for all to enjoy.
A special thanks to our friends, neighbors and merchants who donated their
time, energy and enthusiasm to keep the fun going all afternoon. The event
was an overwhelming success with the help of over one hundred volunteers of all ages. Our gratitude goes out to each and every one of you –
we couldn’t have pulled it off without you. We would like to note some of
our special Rowaytonites who truly made the day a memorable one:
• Mark Sattler and his Grill Masters – Matt Manley and Ben Bresnahan – for
keeping everyone well fed and Ian King who helped Mark with food and
supplies. This was a great team effort supported by a large group of
talented and enthusiastic volunteers!
• Chris Shaw and Bucky Taylor, for manning the Raw Bar and the entire
‘shucker’ team – Jay Sequeria, Bill Lindeblad, Matt Malichio and Kerry
McFarlin. And special thanks to Robert Griffith for donating his oysters and
Mid State Shellfish for donating clams!
• “The Beer Boys,” – thanks Paul Curtin, Chris Sovak and team – Howard
Courtemanche, Doug Ambrose, Andy Meyerson, Dave Savona, Tim Galu,
Jimmy Coale, Don Nash, Martin Yallop, Ian King, Andy Merrill and Bob
Duff - for pulling together to keep a great variety of suds flowing all day
long and making certain nobody left the Ramble parched. Also, special
thanks go to Rowayton Wines for their donations.
• Heather Drstvensek, for organizing the Kids Games and putting smiles on
hundreds of little faces.
• Pat Brasher for an amazing vendor show.
• Brendan McGee for providing our sound system for the auction and music.
• Andy Meyerson, our Auctioneer and RCA President, who captured every one’s attention and kept the bidding going up, up, up! Thanks to Rachel
Maletesta for preparing all the auction items.
• Special thanks to Todd Deklyn and the Rowayton Fire Department and
Ed Carlson.
• Frani Taylor and Lynn Worland for co-chairing the event and the hours spent
before, during and after to make it enjoyable for all.
In addition to being one of our most fun-filled events, the River Ramble is
one of the RCA’s largest fundraisers and finances many of our community
events including the Fireworks, Soccer Program, Swim Races and Halloween
Celebration, to name a few. We look forward to seeing you again next year,
so mark your calendars for July 8th, 2017!
We all got funked up at Bayley Beach in July listening to Ripe and Eric
Krasno, rocked out to The Record Company in an old school show at
Roton Middle, chilled to The Movement’s reggae riffs and kicked our
heels up to the country sound of Futurebirds.
The party moved to Pinkney Park in August for the blues of the James
Hunter Six and the bluegrass of Cabinet as well as a classic show put
on by The Weight.
It all culminated in a spectacular Labor Day finale as we welcomed
back festival favorite Eric Lindell.
Throngs of area residents, families and friends flocked to the shows.
Without the generous support of local businesses and residents in the
Rowayton, Norwalk and Darien communities, we would never be able
to bring these top acts to town.
This amazing experience for our community would not happen without the tireless efforts of the RCA Summer Music Committee. Many
thanks to our all-star band of Matt Manley, Paul Curtin, Chris Gorman,
Drew Seath, the hardest working man in show business – Brendan
McGee and the hardest working man in town – RCA president Andy
Meyerson. We begin planning for hot summer nights in the cold,
blustery days of January – scouting, inquiring and booking the bands
as well as hitting the street in search of sponsorships. When it’s
finally show time, this crew spends Sundays setting up behind the
scenes and then breaking it all down when everyone goes home.
Others that are an integral part to the effort include: Peter Blandori
(www.blandori.com) who provides graphic design, Scott Kuykendall
of Oxygen Design (www.o2design.biz) who produces our digital
content, the professional sound is provided by Brooks Dubois Audio,
and Andy Schadt of Soluxe (www.soluxe.com) for merchandise.
Susan and Melissa Bucciarelli keep the parking lot organized. Ben
Bresnahan helps lead the sanitation crew and has the official shirt to
prove it. As if all the time he devotes to Little League isn’t enough,
Rich Van Steen passes the jug and moves merchandise. Don Wilson
keeps the grounds in order, and Ed Carlson and Mike Barbis provide
valuable counsel on all logistics. Special thanks also goes out to RCA
treasurers Lynn Worland and Sue Casey who keep our books (and
our minds) in order.
Thank you to everyone for coming to the shows. The turnout was
tremendous and there is a palpable, welcoming vibe the artists feel
when they come to town.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who “filled the jug” at the concerts.
Your generous support is vital to what we do.
We all had a blast. Just another piece of what makes our town a little
slice of heaven... let’s do it again next Summer!

Sports
Rowayton Civic Association’s Rowayton Youth Soccer
The 2016 Rowayton Soccer season
is currently underway with well
over 300 players improving their
skills and enjoying friendly
competition. Rowayton Youth
Soccer is a recreational community soccer program run
by volunteers for children from
4-18 years old and is running for 10
weeks from September 10 through
November 19 this year. We have
five age groups: 4-5 year olds; 6-7
year olds; 8-10 year olds; middle
schoolers, and a high school team.
While games are certainly competitive, recreation is our priority.
Play occurs locally in Rowayton (except for middle and high schoolers).
The Saturday morning games have become a local tradition of good
spirited competition, bringing both the players and parents together as
a community.
This year, the RCA has made a significant investment toward our goal of
continuing to improve our kid’s soccer development by contracting with
a professional soccer training organization for weekday practices. Our
selected training organization runs both Rec and Travel programs in New
Canaan, Darien and other neighboring communities. Referees, scoring
and team standings are limited to the older age groups.
Also, as a volunteer-based organization, we are always looking for parents
willing to coach or act as team communication coordinators. For more information, please contact Megan Russo at [email protected].

Youth Activities
The RCA Underground
Friday Nights, October 2016 – June 2017
Fall is here and we are busy planning another great year
with the Rowayton Youth Underground for the 2016-2017
school year. The Rowayton Youth Underground is an RCAsponsored program held in the lower level of the Rowayton Community Center. It provides a safe and supervised
venue where our middle-school kids (6th & 7th graders)
can socialize with friends one Friday
night a month, with adult chaperones.
There is ping-pong, air hockey, bumper pool and foosball tables
as well as pop-a-shot basketball and other games. Weather
permitting, there are also outdoor activities such as basketball,
paddle tennis and touch football. Sixth and seventh graders meet on one Friday
night per month (different Friday nights) from 6:30-8:30pm. A one-time registration fee of $125 for the year (October-June) pays for staff, special events and
pizza and snacks. The few local “field trips” off site (ie: My three Sons, Skyzone)
are always a highlight as well as the year-end Bayley Beach picnic in June.
For a complete list of details and dates, please refer to the RCA website at www.
rowaytonct.com or email Mary Cambareri at [email protected] or Carolynn
Kaufman at [email protected] for 6th grade and Lauren Henry at

Norwalk Mentor Program
One hour a week can change lives forever
Volunteer just one hour a week to make
a huge difference in a young person’s
life! The Norwalk Mentor Program is
looking for caring individuals who can
spare just one hour a week to be a
“mentor.”
Following a brief training, you will be
matched with a student in one of the
Norwalk Public Schools. You choose the
school and the grade. You then meet with
your “mentee” at school once a week for
an hour – talking, playing games, reading
or enjoying other activities. You can be
that student’s friend, confidant, role
model and advocate. As a mentor you
will feel rewarded just seeing the difference you make as the young person
you mentor matures and grows to reach his or her full potential.
To learn more about becoming involved with the Norwalk Mentor Program
(a program of the Human Services Council), please contact Nancy Pratt at
[email protected] or call 203-849-1111 x3042.

incredible sea creatures for you to experience.
There will also be games, face-painting, a scavenger hunt and guided tours

Land Trust Preserve, that was purchased with donations from the community.
Thank you to those who contributed to preserve this important resource.

The Rowayton Fire Department Needs YOU!
Have you ever considered joining our all-volunteer
fire department? Not only do they always welcome
additional firefighters, but you can always help
as a driver, radio operator or in other functions.
Rowayton’s all-volunteer department keeps our property taxes about 10 percent lower than they would be
if we had a paid department. Training is ongoing so
you can join at any time of the year. The fire department is always looking
for new recruits. Call Chief DeKlyn at (203) 515-9743 for more information.
Rowayton Fire Department Holiday Toy Collection
A note from Fire Marshal Ed Carlson
1 Check to see if your heating system has been
serviced within the last 12 months.
2.Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every
12 months or sooner depending on how much
they are used.
3.Be sure not to leave candles unattended during
a power outage. They are a leading cause of fire
in a home.
4.If you have a fireplace, does it have a screen or door to catch sparks?
5.Space heaters need to be at least three feet away from walls and combus tible items.
6.Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries, spring and
fall.
7.Practice your fire escape plan with your family. If you do not have a plan,
it’s a good time to start one.
8.Install smoke detectors on every level and in every sleeping area.
Sunday, December 4th, 2016, 1:00-3:00pm
9.It is recommended that you have a CO detector on the main and sleeping
level (s) of your home.
Members of the Rowayton Volunteer Fire Department will be collecting new
toys for at-risk children in our area this holiday season. Please bring a new,
unwrapped toy, gift card or other gift to the Rowayton Fire Department as the
Rowayton volunteer firefighters will be collecting toys for the Carver Center’s
holiday party. For more information on the toy collection, call 853-0842.
Within the past year I have seen a number of homes in Rowayton that do not
have working smoke or CO detectors in the residence. As your Fire Marshal
this is a great concern of mine. If you need assistance in installing them or
have questions regarding the placement of detectors, please call me at 203854-6666 ext. 2.
