Norene
By Carol M. Goetz,
Associate Director of Development
The psychologist told Norene Benton and her
husband Earle that they might like to visit a school
for their daughter Laurie. “It’s way out in Chester
County,” he said. “I’ve heard it’s a little strange, but
wonderful.”
In 1965, Laurie was six years old when Norene and
Earle went for a summer drive on a Saturday afternoon. They found themselves winding down a long
driveway that ended by Whitestone and Chantry.
As children surrounded their car, Ursel Pietzner
came out and told them that usually people
made an appointment before they visited!
That fall Laurie became a residential student at
“Beaver Run.” It was hard for Norene. She confesses
to stopping her car and peering through the woods,
trying to glimpse Laurie and reassure herself that her
beloved daughter was well. To learn more about the
school in the woods, Norene began volunteering at
Beaver Run. She did laundry in Whitestone’s basement and had lunch with coworkers. She attended
May Day festivals and plays, first experiencing the
angel of the Shepherd’s Play in Whitestone’s living
room. Adola McWilliams, a housemother, offered a
4
study group for the Bentons and two other sets of
parents. Earle became the school’s treasurer as new
houses were built “up the hill.” And always, always,
Norene volunteered.
She volunteered in the library at Camphill Kimberton
Hills for years. She volunteered when Laurie went to
live at Camphill Village USA in Copake, New York.
She volunteered at Kimberton Waldorf School. In the
five years I have been at Camphill Special School,
Norene has volunteered in our IEP and development offices.
“Laurie led the way,” says Norene. “She’s led our
entire family to be involved in Camphill in one way
or another. If it wasn’t for Laurie, I’d still be playing
bridge on the Main Line!” (Norene has six children,
nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.)
In May Camphill Special School honored Norene
Benton for forty-four years of following Laurie...for
forty-four years of care and service. Thank you,
Norene. We dedicate our annual report to you
with affection and appreciation.

School of Curative Education vibrant and successful
By Becky Rutherford, Teacher and School
of Curative Education Faculty Member
Our Camphill School of Curative Education, traditionally called “Seminar,” is balancing international
demands while maintaining high standards of adult
education at home. During the past year members
of our core faculty led a workshop in curative education for the Waldorf school community in Mexico,
gave guest lectures at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, and returned to Thailand to teach in
a curative education training program.
In Pennsylvania our highest enrollment ever has
quite an international flavor. Students from Kenya,
South Africa, Korea, Thailand, Ecuador, Tajikistan,
Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, Hungary,
Brazil, and Vietnam join Americans. Our new
Minimum Residency Program enables students from
other Camphill and like-minded communities to join
us and has drawn students from Canada, California,
and nearby Camphill communities.
6
Because our courses were evaluated and awarded
college credit recommendations, last October
Andreas Schuschke became our first student to
receive his undergraduate degree as part of our
BA completion program. More students are following suit.
The vibrancy and success of our program is because
we teach “Seminar” students the same way we
teach our children: through head, heart, and hands.
Study, artistic work, and practical applications shape
every course, for our objective is to offer an education that leads to the unfolding of full potential as
individuals and as Curative Educators. Many of our
recent graduates have opted to stay at Camphill
Special School, and when we see the contributions
they make as sustaining members of the community,
we know we are fulfilling our goals.

Ben
By Mary Beekley, Coworker and
School of Curative Education Student
At home in Chicago, Ben’s parents were finding it
increasingly difficult to keep him safe. Ben would
wander away, pursuing whatever captured his
interest, having no concern for his own safety and
no understanding of possible dangers. Ben also
had significant difficulty focusing on his environment.
He disliked crowds and was overwhelmed easily in
noisy surroundings; he would withdraw and occupy
himself with favorite repetitive behavior.
Oh, but Ben has changed! At home in Ember he is
affectionate and outgoing, enjoying evening circle
and sharing his day. Last winter he attended a
Temple University basketball game with a group
of students and coworkers. Not only was Ben able
to cope with the commotion, he loved the entire
experience, dancing to the music and cheering for
the players.
All last year Ben ate dinner once a week in his
former house, Rock Crystal. In the beginning, a coworker would walk him home. Gradually he began
to leave Rock Crystal on his own and a coworker
would meet him halfway. By the end of school we
were able to stand on Ember’s porch, awaiting his
return after dinner.
During the last week of school, I was standing on
the porch waiting for Ben. When he didn’t arrive as
expected, I walked down to meet him. I didn’t find
him along the way or at Rock Crystal and I returned
to Ember hoping to find that somehow we simply
had missed each other. As I walked in the front
door, Ben walked in the back door. He had come
home a different way.
[Editor’s note: Shortly before our annual report went to press, our community was saddened to learn that Benjamin will not be
joining us for the 2009–2010 school year. Benjamin was denied public school funding and can no longer afford to attend.]

Tünde, Andreas, and Leon
By Andreas Schuschke, House Parent, Rowan House
When my wife Tünde and I look into the sparkling
blue eyes of the miracle we have created in our firstborn son, Leon, we feel such overwhelming happiness and gratitude for our lives in Camphill that the
path that led us here seems like another miracle in
its own right.
Tünde grew up as part of a Hungarian minority in
Romania and became an elementary school teacher
after graduating from high school. One day, a
colleague asked her to help translate a letter from
a small residential school for children with special
needs in the United States – Camphill Special
School! Even more amazing, Tünde was one of very
few young people in Romania who received a visa
to study here for four years.
I grew up in Berlin, Germany, and as a teenager
became interested in visiting other countries. During high school, for instance, I spent a year as an
exchange student in North Carolina. After graduating
there was no question that I wanted to carry out
10
my mandatory civil service in America. Surfing the
Internet I stumbled upon two Camphill communities in Pennsylvania: “Beaver Run” and “Soltane.”
I applied to both and Beaver Run was the first to
reply. . . so this is where I ended up.
Our paths crossed in 2003 when we both moved
into Rowan. Tünde was a veteran fourth-year seminarist and I was a green new coworker. Although
there were some tensions early in the year, we
soon became good friends, and as summer 2004
approached we realized there was more.
The rest, as they say, is history, and looking back
now while basking in the glow of our newborn son,
there is no doubt that it was destiny that brought
us together, against all odds, in such a place of
beauty and community. It is this community that has
nurtured our growth as individuals and as a family
through the work with the children and the myriad
of meaningful human encounters and struggles that
take place here every day.

Courtney
By Esther Weintraub, Speech Therapist
When Courtney joined our speech and occupational
therapy Young Ladies Group in ninth grade, she was
shy, lacked confidence, and deeply wanted to gain
friends. Courtney thoroughly enjoyed interactions with
her peers but lacked the confidence to contribute to
discussions in a meaningful way. Instead her comments often were brief, a repetition of what someone
else had said, or simply “I don’t know.”
As chronicled in her Memory Books, Courtney ’s confidence grew as the years passed. As we dove deeper
into girls’ issues such as personal versus private,
safety awareness, friendships, conflict resolution, and
etiquette, Courtney began to make more meaningful contributions to group discussions. She enjoyed
planning and participating in the end of the year tea
party, socializing with friends and special guests.
Our final year of girls’ group focused on leisure and
healthy living options. Courtney learned the importance of diet and exercise; how to initiate, plan, and
complete activities with friends; simple food preparation; and to focus and maintain her attention to enjoy
12
tasks that she was involved in instead of worrying
about what came next.
Courtney continued with traditional speech/language therapy with another therapist and a few
girlfriends during her senior year. It was amazing to
see her beam with confidence! I had the opportunity to observe her answer the phone in the school
house and accurately pass on a message. She was
aware of her speech sounds and what words contain them and tried to correct errors on her own. She
has better boundary awareness and has learned
how to socialize with others, initiate leisure activities,
and participate appropriately in conversations and
games.
Most impressive, however, was Courtney’s starring
role as Queen Dalma in the graduation play, The
Quest for the Magical Flower. The beautiful dress,
make-up, and jewelry served as an ultimate send-off
for a confident, transformed young lady headed to
our Transition Program, where she is sure to continue
with much more success.

Joey
By Guy Alma, Director of Development
This summer my wife and I have a family member
leaving the nest to begin adult life in California. There
is no doubt Joey is ready for this change; we have
traveled a long way together and formed bonds that
never will break.
Joey is a young man with developmental disabilities.
He joined our household at Camphill Special School
nine years ago. Joey had just turned thirteen and our
two boys were in kindergarten. Joey became sick as
an infant and suffered brain damage. As a result he
has little executive control and few inhibitions. Joey
also is a collector of things: his favorites are the plastic rings from bottle caps, magazines, and coins. He
treats these possessions like priceless treasures and is
horrified if anything happens to them.
Joey’s greatest challenge lies in putting aside his
compulsions. When he first came to us he was tormented and unable to let go of his belongings. His
lack of self-control turned his days into chaos and
14
confusion. Gradually, Joey found peace through
work: for the last nine years he has taken care
of farm animals. He has mucked out horse stalls,
caught errant chickens and returned them to the
coop, fed and fussed over dozens of piglets, bottlefed calves, and herded sheep from pasture to barn
and back again. To see Joey in the fields is to see
a man contented.
Our sons have formed a special relationship with
Joey. He feels safe in their company and turns to
them for help and friendship. Joey will never be
wholly free of the things that drive him, but he has
attained an enormous measure of contentment
through work and belonging. He has shaped
our experience as a family and our home will
be changed forever by his departure.

The 2009 ProAm Tennis Ball and Tournament has
come and gone, but Anthony DeCecco, founder of
the fundraising event and owner of Tennis Addiction
Sports Club in Exton, Pennsylvania, still glows with the
joy of raising $103,000 for the school and students
he loves. It has been eighteen years since he partnered with Camphill Special School and Anthony
continues to pump his heart, soul, and considerable
energy into every facet of the ProAm.
Anthony’s distinct personality and enthusiasm have
influenced Camphill Special School and the School
has shaped him. He says his ever-growing commitment to our students has made him a better person
and given him a perspective he utilizes in everyday
life. Each time he is with our students he relishes their
wonder and truly feels he is making a difference in
their lives. With two children of his own, Anthony sees
how much they, too, are impacted by knowing our
students.
16
Anthony encourages his staff, family, and friends to
participate in the ProAm. Many serve on the ProAm
Committee, attend the activities, and, of course, play
in the tennis tournament. He notes that the ProAm
is something everyone at his club looks forward to
every year; it has helped to flavor his employees’
and friends’ views of their roles in our world. He
looks forward to many more years of the Camphill
ProAm and continuing to learn from our students
about living and life.

Richard Smoker manages Calvin L. Smoker Builders, Inc., a business his grandfather, Rueben Smoker,
founded in 1950. Richard’s first project for Camphill
Special School was “about twenty-five years ago,” he
ruminated. “We replaced all the basement windows
in Whitestone. Back then I didn’t know too much
about Camphill. It was just a job.”
Since then, however, Richard and his company
have played major roles in many maintenance and
new construction projects at “Beaver Run,” including
Rowan and Long Houses. “We asked him to build
our new houses because he knows exactly what we
want,” says Director of Development Guy Alma. “We
need architecture that comes off a blueprint with
beauty and craftsmanship, and that can take lots
and lots of wear and tear.”
Richard told me that he has never heard a voice
raised here. “The calmness and gentleness here is
remarkable,” he said. “The caring is so compassionate and true. . . you can tell right away that without
proselytizing, something wonderful goes on here
every day.

“I’ve learned to appreciate that serenity,” he continued, “and I’ve tried to become more like that. I’ve
learned to listen better and to understand all sides
of an issue before I make a decision.”
Richard has been married for thirty-five years and he
and his wife are very proud of their two daughters
and three granddaughters. Richard is a faithful supporter of our School, too, and says he would recommend that anyone support Camphill Special School

What a year it has been! Amidst economic uncertainty and an average decline
in giving to education of nearly four percent, you, the ever steadfast friends and
families of Camphill Special School, helped us to reach 97.1% of our fiscal
year fundraising goal. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, coworkers,
and students please accept my sincere and wholehearted appreciation.
Let me remind you how much your support means to our students.
Your gifts make possible:
• The only Camphill community for children and youth in North America

Because our annual report goes to press before our audit,
the financial information presented here is incomplete.
Our audit report is available upon request.
• The only Waldorf school that serves children with special needs explicitly
• A traditional scholastic curriculum that encourages practical, social, and
artistic growth
• Dramatic, visual, musical, and movement arts, along with practical skills such
as woodworking, weaving, sewing, and gardening – education for head,
heart, and hands
• Conventional and innovative therapies addressing the specific disabilities
and requirements of every student
• A Transition Program designed for students ages eighteen to twenty-one that
since 2002 has helped 95% of its graduates attain adult placement
• A Camphill School of Curative Education that is training “Certified Curative
Educators” to lead Camphill in the future
I hope the stories, photographs, and facts and figures of our annual report
have informed and inspired you, but most of all, reminded you of how important you are to Camphill Special School. We could not be here for the children
without you.
