WAB Annual Report 2006 - Western Association of Broadcasters
2005/2006 Annual Report
2005-2006 ANNUAL REPORT
72ND ANNUAL GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING
1. There being a quorum present, President Lyndon Friesen called the meeting to order at 8:15 am Alberta time.
2. The minutes of the 71st AGM were accepted as reported.
Motion: Moved by David Wiebe and seconded by Menno Friesen THAT the minutes be accepted as reported. Carried.
3. President’s Report
President Lyndon Friesen opened by thanking everyone for making this a terrific year and an outstanding year. Lyndon thanked our great membership and remarked on the incredible
industry support we received from our sponsors. The WAB over-sold the golf tournament, sold out the hotel and packed all of the sessions. Lyndon noted that he hoped this would
inspire people to register early next year.
Lyndon reported that this year had been a transition year from The Organizers – Event Management Ltd. with Bruce and Deirdre Hamstead to Lesa Page with Page Planning. Lyndon
recognized Bruce and Deirdre with a special thank you remarking that this convention is just one of the many contributions they have made to our industry – but an example of how
organized they and their events always are. Lyndon thanked The Organizers again for their contributions and commitment.
Lyndon went on to recognize Doug Gunn for his tireless efforts on the WAB Board. The Western Association of Broadcasters appreciates Doug’s commitment, passion and insight. Lyndon
stated that the financial report will reflect the success of this year’s convention, the terrific support of our sponsors and our overall financial health. Lyndon went on to say that working
with the Board has been a terrific experience and he thanked each of the Board members for making it both fun and rewarding. Lyndon said that he enjoyed serving as President, and
he wishes Stan all the best as the incoming WAB President. Lyndon closed by saying he looks forward to seeing everyone back in Kananaskis for next year’s convention!
4. Interim Treasurer’s Report
Stan Schmidt gave the interim treasurer’s report:
Stan noted that earlier in the year, the WAB had been lagging behind in membership payments and had since caught up. This year has seen our largest sponsorship amount to date.
At worst, the WAB will end up at break even, but it is more likely that we will end up with a small profit. Some of the major expenses have not been accounted for yet such as the hotel
bill because of timing. Last year, the WAB earned $15,833. At this point, the WAB has approximately $110,000 in a short term savings account and around $31,000 in the chequing
account. Stan reported that although the WAB does have a bit of a war chest, we still do not know whether this will be depleted in future years. With panel sessions, we have saved
a lot of money by not booking big-ticket speakers, but if the panel session becomes redundant, then we will need the money that has been set aside to cover speaker costs.
Motion: Moved by Cam Cowie and seconded by Don Kille THAT the interim Treasurer’s report is accepted. Carried.
5. Special Resolutions
(1) Motion: Moved by Al Thorgeirson and seconded by Dennis Dunlop THAT the WAB, in the convention assembled, ratify and endorse all actions of the Board of Directors and Officers
of the WAB during the past year. Carried.
(2) Motion: Moved by Vic Dubois and seconded by Brian Main THAT the WAB, in the convention assembled, extend to the Officers, Directors, Committee Chairs and staff, our heartfelt
thanks for their efforts in making the convention a success. As well, we express appreciation to the firms and individuals who so kindly assisted and contributed so much to our comfort
and pleasure. Carried.

9. New President’s Address
Following a short meeting of the newly elected 2006/2007 WAB Board of Directors, Stan Schmidt of CH Red Deer was introduced as the incoming President.
Stan opened by saying it is gratifying to have received the support of the Board of Directors. It has been a great pleasure working with the past board during 2005/2006 to deliver what
has been a very successful 72nd Annual Convention. Attendance was up, sponsorship revenues were up and we had a great day yesterday with presentations from the C.R.T.C. and the CAB
along with a great panel discussion. Stan would especially like to thank Lyndon Friesen for his leadership and dedication to the board and this year’s convention. Lyndon did a fantastic
job during a busy year for him that included his work as member of the radio board of the CAB, co-chairing a successful CAB convention last November in Winnipeg as well as tons of
hard work and time spent on the radio review hearing that concluded last May. Also, just recently, Lyndon has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of Golden West Radio. In Lyndon’s
new role as Past President, Stan will also be relying on his expertise and experience to guide Stan and provide needed input in the coming year. Stan also would like to thank Jim
Haskins. Jim has provided hard work and dedication to the board for many years and will be sincerely missed, but not forgotten.
Stan would also like to welcome to the board, Garth Buchko, as our new radio representative for Manitoba. Stan looks forward to working with Garth and the rest of the board to deliver
a great 73rd Annual Convention! As Stan stated earlier in his Treasurer’s Report, the organization is in a very good financial position and has great membership support. And to that end,
Stan would personally like to thank all of the members for their continued dedication to the WAB. Stan said he would remiss if he did not extend a special thanks to all of the sponsors
who participated in this year’s convention as without them, an event such as this would not come to fruition. Stan urged all members to work and support these sponsors. To conclude,
Stan looks forward to working with the new Board of Directors to provide another first class event that provides take away value to the convention delegates in 2007. Stan invited
everyone and their colleagues to meet in Kananaskis Country on June 8th, 9th & 10th, 2007 for the 73rd Annual Convention & AGM.

For our Radio Gold Medal Award, the WAB is pleased to honour the Country 105 Cares for Kids Radiothon! This radiothon was a fund raising
drive for the Alberta Children’s Hospital and over three days in November, the station opened up the phone lines and shared stories of healing,
miracles and inspiration. When the amounts were tallied, the radiothon brought in over 1.19 million dollars! The Western Association of
Broadcasters would like to congratulate Country 105 for their tremendous Cares for Kids Radiothon!
Our Television Gold Medal Award was presented to CH Red Deer for their CH Red Deer Festival of Trees that raised funds for the regional
