The mission of the Center for Puppetry Arts®
is to touch lives through the art of puppetry.
To that end the Center aims to develop and explore the art form; provide
memorable artistic experiences; unlock the imagination; inspire every generation; and
support the artists and staff behind the puppets.
Dear Friends & Supporters,
What an amazing year it has been! Though times are very tough economically speaking, with everyone examining ways
to cut back, your generosity enabled us to actually increase our attendance by 7%.
Through the talent and amazing creativity of our Artistic Director, Jon Ludwig, and our Producer, Liz Lee, we have
mounted some very exciting productions including the premier of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer®. The show sold
out each of its 91 performances and deserved that audience due to its superb production values, vocal work, design,
puppetry, and cast. The production was a wonderful homage to the classic television special.
In all, there were over 700 performances here at the Center during the past year!
But the fun wasn’t confined to our theaters. Our Education Department presented a plethora of activities for children
and adults. Highlights include Sesame Street’s Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and her workshop on unleashing creativity, and an
amazing puppet design workshop presented by our own Resident Puppet Designer, Jason von Hinezmeyer. Of course,
our most popular education program is still the Create-A-Puppet Workshop, where children build their own puppet to
take home after a performance.
Thousands of these puppets went home with children, demonstrating their own creativity
and our influence in helping them realize that creativity.
Of course, I couldn’t mention the Education Program without praising our award-winning Distance Learning program,
under the direction of Patty Petrey Dees. Distance Learning not only received even more awards this year, but furthered
their reach to thousands of children, teens, and adults right in their own homes, schools, hospitals, and other locations.
Since its inception, Distance Learning has provided health, science, language arts and
more relevant lessons to 48 states around the country as well as four foreign countries.
Our Museum continued to dazzle with our exclusive Jim Henson exhibits; thousands of attendees witnessed the
creativity and genius of one of the world’s greatest puppeteers. Jim Henson believed in the Center, cutting the ribbon
on our opening 32 years ago, and his presence is still with us both in his creations and in the creativity he continues to
inspire. We are honored to continue showing these amazing exhibits.
Thank you for contributing to the success of this past season. As you peruse this report and learn more about what
we’ve accomplished over the past year, please know that these accomplishments were made possible only through you
and your generosity.

Center Company
Visiting Artists
Since its inception in 1978, the Center for Puppetry Arts has worked with artists from a multitude of backgrounds including
theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. Performers in the Center Company are trained in puppetry techniques including shadow,
marionette, and hand-and-rod manipulation. In addition, all character voices and singing are performed live, requiring Center
puppeteers to possess strong vocal and acting skills.
To complement performances by the Center’s Company, the Center brings in traveling puppet companies from all over the
world for performances throughout each season. These productions represent diverse puppetry styles from a wide array of
cultures for both our Family Series as well as our New Directions Series (NDS) for teen and adult audiences. Guest performers
often offer workshops or lectures to accompany their performances here at the Center.
The Atlanta area has a wealth of talented puppeteers, many of whom regularly perform in Center productions. In the 2010-11
season, the Center employed sixteen local puppeteers and musicians in addition to the many talented composers, designers, and
technicians who make the Center’s performances possible.

Xperimental Puppetry Theater
Education
For over thirty years, Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT) has fostered the development of countless artists across the country.
XPT produces the ultimate puppet menagerie as artists from all disciplines and novices alike are brought together to collaborate,
experiment, and explore the vast possibilities within the art of puppetry.
The Education Department was able to share the magic of puppet-building and puppet performance with 95,228 guests
through on-site Create-A-Puppet Workshops, and represented the Center at 54 community and/or school events throughout
Georgia. In addition to those experiences, highlights for 2010-11 educational programming include:
“XPT continues to grow: this past year featured an ensemble over two thirds of which were new to the
program. Combing through the more than 30 applications from local, national, and international artists,
including dancers, filmmakers, circus performers, improvisors, and visual artists, I was reminded how
important XPT is to artists - both by bringing them together as an ensemble, making connections between
disciplines and strengthening our local arts community, as well as by supporting those artists’ experiments with
our chosen artform, thus expanding and exploring the possibilities of puppetry. From stop-motion animation to
maskwork, shadows, Bunraku-style, and object theater, XPT is gaining a reputation worldwide as a base for
artistic growth and experimentation, while retaining our connection with Atlanta’s vibrant artistic scene.”

• The program received the CILC Pinnacle Award for the fourth year in a row. The Center is the ONLY content

Create-A-Puppet Workshops
Museum
The Create-A-Puppet Workshop is a special hands-on, curriculum-based activity that accompanies every Family Series
performance at the Center. Children build and decorate their very own take-home puppet and put that puppet into performance
on our classroom stage. Each show features a different puppet custom-designed by a team of Teaching Artists in the Center’s
Education Department. On weekdays, groups also participate in a learning activity that relates to the show.
The Center’s Museum department participated in a large exhibit of puppetry at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC
during the 2010-11 season. 32 pieces were loaned for the PuppetArt exhibit, which took place from July 16, 2010 to January
9, 2011. PuppetArt was presented in collaboration with the Port City Puppet Festival, sponsored by the Puppeteers of America
Southeast Region and the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts. The exhibition featured large-scale puppets and set designs from the
famous Vermont-based Bread and Puppet Theatre, and selected international puppets from various historical periods drawn from
the collection of the Center for Puppetry Arts.

Volunteer Program
The Volunteer Program is comprised of more than 50 enthusiastic
and diverse volunteers who are excited about touching lives through the
art of puppetry. In Education, volunteers help with the preparation and
implementation of the Create-A-Puppet Workshops. The Museum Library
and the Production Department have dedicated volunteers who work on
long-term archival projects. Many hours are spent helping the Development
Department with Patron Parties, String Fling Gala, various office tasks, and
assisting with birthday parties on the weekends. Volunteers have helped
proof materials prepared by the Marketing Department and have helped
to organize the office. Volunteers also interact with patrons as theater
ushers for shows and greeters/Museum Docents during events such as
Fulton County Free Museum Saturdays and Smithsonian Museum Day.

During the 2010-11 season, the
Center recognized Joey Smith as
our Volunteer of the Year. Joey has
been one of our most dedicated volunteers during this past year. In fact, he has
volunteered consistently at the Center for nearly four years! In 2010-2011 alone,
he volunteered 103.5 hours, primarily in the Education Department. Joey chose to
volunteer at the Center because he wanted to spend time somewhere other than at
his place of employment as a way to relax and give back to his community.
