SHEEPFOLD EXPRESS NEWSLETTER
TABERNACLE BAPTIST CHURCH
150 EAST SECOND STREET
(REV. R.W. JONES BLVD.)
BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY 08016
REV. CORY L JONES, D.MIN., PASTOR
Volume 22/ Issue 2
December 2015
Our mission is to be a Christ-centered
village dedicated to the development of church and community
through worship, service, sharing, teaching and preaching.
Sheepfold Ministry
To My Beloved TBC!
God has blessed us to see another year. We are indeed grateful for 2016. It's amazing how
far God has brought us and I believe the best is yet to come! This year, our intention is to
focus on our mission. "We are a Christ-centered village dedicated to the development
of church and community through worship, service, sharing, teaching, and preaching." For
us to be Christ-centered is for us to be intimately connected to the vine. In John 15, Jesus
boldly declares "I am the true vine." This suggests we are to be intimately connected to
Christ Jesus.
Being intimately connected to Christ is going to propel us to new levels of spiritual maturity. You see, spiritual maturity has very little to do with how long one has been in church. In fact, there are many that have attended church for decades but God would consider them spiritually immature. Spiritual maturity is the result of
intentionally connecting intimately with Jesus Christ. It is connecting intimately with God's word. The result
of spiritual maturity will be Christ-centered ministry.
Christ-centered ministry has the potential to change the world. Christ-centered ministry asks the questions,
"What would God have us to do? How would God require us to respond? What ministry focus would God
want us to have?" It is not overly consumed with preference. It seeks to contribute to a village that is together
and on one accord. In my heart I believe Tabernacle Baptist Church can be that village. I'm excited to be your
pastor. I'm excited about what I believe God is doing. Our leadership is committed and focused on achieving
this Christ-centered mission.
Join us in this ministry journey. Give God your resources. Give God your spiritual gifts. Give God your heart.
2016 is the year of Christ-centeredness. I'm grateful to be along for the ride. I hope you are too! I love you
dearly!
Pastor Cory
Greetings,
As I reflect on my first year as chairman, many things happened. New deacons were ordained; inclement
weather closings, meetings, (did I say meetings). Many decisions had to be made, some harder than others.
With all that was done, I believe it was to make Tabernacle the church that God wants us to be. The Deacon
Board continues to work with Pastor Cory to help him achieve the vision that God has given to him for Tabernacle.
During the past couple of months the Deacon Board has been working with Minister Lewis Dixon, who is
completing his internship here at Tabernacle. He has conducted Pastoral Care Training sessions with the Deacons and Sheepfold Leaders. Each training session has been very good and those that have participated can see
that Minister Dixon has a passion for pastoral care. There will be more to come in the near future as we continue to work with Minister Dixon to enhance the sheepfold ministry so that we are in contact with all members of TBC to address all their needs. As part of this initiative, I hope everyone received my Christmas/New
Year calling post phone greeting. Membership will be receiving phone calls from your district deacons
throughout the year as well.
Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
Deacon Mark Jenkins, Chairman
Sheepfold Ministry
Happy 2016 from the Board of Trustees of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Pastor
Cory has been preaching these first few weeks of the year about the importance
of a branch's connection to the vine. One of the most important points to grasp in
this agricultural metaphor is that a strong plant does not necessarily mean a bigger plant, but rather one that it is firmly rooted, healthy and pruned with love and
care in order to yield more and better fruit.
Toward that end, the Board of Trustees is striving to help our church "grow" by
more clearly defining our personnel procedures, by implementing a personnel
manual with well defined policies and procedures, and by developing and utilizing internal committees to deal
with maintenance, capital projects, strategic planning, security, etc. We are also working shoulder-to-shoulder
with the Board of Deacons to empower effective ministry. Our shared goal is to remain attentive to the needs
of our congregation as we endeavor to help build our Christ-centered village and minister to our congregation
and community.
May the favor of our Lord, Jesus the Christ, continue to rest, rule and abide with you and all you love.
Your fellow servant in Christ,
Christopher D. Taylor
Chairman, Board of Trustees
EDITOR’S CORNER
This issue of the Sheepfold Express newsletter marks the initial edition for 2016. We
continue our quest to be a Christ-centered village dedicated to development of church
and community through worship, service, sharing, preaching and teaching. We continue
to grow numerically and during 2015 we welcomed two hundred (200) new members
with seventy five (75) as candidates for baptism.
In August, 2015 approximately two hundred (200) of our Tabernacle congregation accompanied Pastor Cory to Los Angeles, CA. He preached at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church,
where he attended as a youngster. A great time was had by all. As we move ahead in 2016, let us continue in
constant prayer and diligently study God’s word through our School of Christian Discipleship and the supplemental classes of Biblical instruction. Continue to be supportive to our Associate Ministers as they bring the
word each Wednesday night prior to our classes of instruction.
Thanks to the Board of Trustees and the Board of Deacons for the camaraderie and the respective commitment to be supportive of our Pastor and his vision, to our members concerns and our Church mission. Thank
you as well Tabernacle family for the spirit of unity and love toward one another. Thanks to all who submitted
articles for this edition of the Sheepfold Express Newsletter. Our mission is to share information and without
you, our contributors, our publication would not be comprehensive. The desired method to submit your article
is electronically, via email to either [email protected]; [email protected] or
[email protected]. Remember … “If your story is omitted, perhaps it was not submitted”.
Thanks again and God bless all of you.

THE SHEEPFOLD
Keeping in touch with the member and helping
Being a part of the Lord’s Sheepfold
Is a very blessed thing.
Because our Redeemer Jesus
Is the Keeper, Savior and King!
When we are lost, Jesus finds us.
He picks us up and carries us back.
With Him as Protector and Leader
No good thing shall will we lack.
He is tender, gentle and kind
He loves us and calls each by name;
Surely Jesus knows the pastures we need
To maintain our naïve and earthly frames.
We can sleep peacefully at night
Under the Shepherd’s watchful eye.
The dawning of each new day
Guarantees that He is still nearby.
Do not be caught outside the Sheepfold
There are dangers and death out there!
Come and stay safely inside with us
Until we transcend to Eternity in the air!

How Can Your Pastor, Deacon and
Sheepfold Leader Help?
Your Pastor and Deacon are ordained officers of
the church. They are committed to helping you
and your family. They want to make sure that every
member and family in our church experience the love
and support of the whole congregation. You are the
only one who can answer the question of how your
pastor and deacon can help you. Here are some ways
they can help you:
Visiting you or your family: make visits to your
home in times of sorrow or sickness and may make
visits to the hospital.
Structure of the Sheepfold
Ministry
Rejoicing with you and your family: they will
share your joy when you celebrate important events or
accomplishments in your life.
The membership of Tabernacle Baptist Church consists of
twelve (12) Districts. One or more Deacons arc assigned to
each District. Member families or households within a district are assigned to a Sheepfold Each Sheepfold is assigned at least one Sheepfold Leader. When a person
unites with Tabernacle Baptist Church, he or she is placed
into a Sheepfold. A member who is away in college or the
military is assigned to the Sheepfold of Hope.
Being your friend: they will listen to your tr oubles
and concerns and try to assist you in whatever way
possible.
Purpose of the Sheepfold Ministry
The purpose of the Sheepfold Ministry at Tabernacle
Baptist Church may be summarized into four (4) areas:

that can help you.
Answering questions: they can pr ovide you with
answers about your faith or about your church.

When Pastor Cory announced to the
TBC family back in July that our church
was having a weight loss challenge
through congregational fitness, I was
hesitant about signing up, especially
while already having a YMCA membership. As a result of my wife encouraging me to join her in the challenge, six
(6) months later I’m still a part of this

I attend the 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. class,
which in its very essence tests ones commitment since the class begins so early.
Just getting out of bed at 5:15 a.m. to

Foreign Mission Report/Ghana, West Africa
Sisters Elvira James and Linda Richardson
This report is from Sisters Elvira James and Linda Richardson regarding their short term
mission tour to the Garden of Hope Community School of the Apese Village of Ghana,
West Africa. The objectives of this mission tour were to assess the operational needs of the school, determine
the progress of the students, confirm the construction of a toilet facility and additional classrooms.
On Tues., Nov. 17, 2015, at 9:50 a.m., we departed from Philadelphia, PA for a short term mission tour in
Ghana, West Africa. We arrived in Ghana on Wed., Nov.18, 2015, at 7:50 a.m. Bishop Curtus Amarteyfio
met us at the airport and informed us that we would spend this tour at his home. We were pleasantly surprised
as we had been unsure of our accommodations. Upon arrival at Bishop’s home, we met his lovely wife, Dr.
Irene Amarteyfio, who prepared wonderful African meals for us each day and served as a wonderful hostess
throughout the week.
Wednesday afternoon, we unpacked and settled in at Bishop’s comfortable home. Wednesday night, we resorted care bags to ensure a bag for each child with correct grade level and age.
On Thursday morning, we packed up the supplies and headed out to the school. We had no idea what to expect and was anxiously looking forward to our arrival. We were not prepared for the reception that we received at the school. The first thing we saw was a big sign covered with pictures of children in a school setting
that read, “Garden of Hope Community School.” Driving further down a slight hill into a mango tree farm,
we came upon the school facility. There were three large tents situated between the two main windowless
structures which housed the four classrooms that made up the school. Bishop Curtis informed us that under
the first tent sat all of the children with school staff, under the second tent sat the parents and under the third
tent sat the dignitaries who had come to greet us. (Village Leaders, Governmental Leaders, Leaders from State
Education Dept.) As the morning progressed, we came to the
realization that the entire morning program involving the children, local and state leaders had been specifically planned for us.
All the classes from nursery school to fourth grade made presentations demonstrating their educational accomplishments and
command of the English Language. We were amazed because
we knew the history of the school. It began with Associate Minister, Mike and three students under a mango tree. (Currently,
there are 130 students attending the Garden of Hope Community
School and Minister Mike is the headmaster.) There were songs,
dances, Scripture recitation, a play (King Solomon), and speeches by various leaders. Bishop Curtis gave a brief history of the
school and introduced the two of us. We each expressed our
gratitude and delight for all the school had done to welcome
us. We presented the school with a Dake Bible to be housed and used at school. At the end of the program,
the five pieces of luggage were brought forth and with the help of school staff, we began passing out care
bags. The expressions on the faces of the children as they received their bags, were worth all the work that had
gone into the preparation of each bag. (We are so grateful and thankful to the Jr. Missionaries and TBC for
their generous support of this project) After all care bags were distributed, gift bags of school supplies were
given to all the teachers who were humbly grateful for everything they received. Afterwards, we drove home
where there was much discussion regarding the day’s events. It was truly an awesome experience and we were
overwhelmed to have been offered the opportunity to participate in this foreign mission journey. Thank you
TBC!!
On Friday, we visited the school again and presented age appropriate lessons with each class. The teaching
manipulatives and bags of prizes that we used for instructions and rewards were
left with the teachers as further teaching tools. The attentive and enthusiastic behavior of the students in the
classes was remarkable. All students were polite and simply beamed with a love for learning. It was a pleasure
interacting with them.

Mission Ministry
On Saturday, we took some personal time to purchase souvenirs and experience the Ghanaian culture. It was
interesting to walk the streets of Accra, Ghana and visit the many small shops with various types of handcrafted art.
On Sunday, we made our final visit to the Garden of Hope
Community School while Sunday School was in session.
Sister Elvira taught a lesson on the subject “Who Can Curse
Whom God Has Blessed?” It was taken from Numbers 23:8
“How can I curse whom God has not cursed?” After class,
treats were given to the children and we left to attend services at an associate church under the leadership of Bishop
Curtis. We were introduced as the TBC Missionaries bringing support to the Garden of Hope Community School. We
received a warm welcome and spoke briefly regarding our
mission tour. Sister Elvira was surprised when Bishop Curtis asked her to give the message for the service. She spoke
again on the same subject as at Sunday School. After a full
day of praise and worship, we invited Bishop Cutis and his
wife to dinner at a restaurant of their choice in appreciation
of their hospitality and generosity.
On Monday, we were given a guide, car and driver to visit a slave castle. This was a profound experience for
both of us as it was the building in which slaves were housed before being forced on ships to be sold in foreign lands. We were moved by actually having the opportunity to stand in the doorway of what is called the
“Door of No Return.”
On Tuesday, we rested and prepared for our return trip.
On Wednesday morning at 10:15, we left Ghana to return to USA. We arrived in Philadelphia, PA at 10:15
p.m. We are grateful to God and Tabernacle for this wonderful mission experience. We are available to answer any questions that you may have regarding this mission tour.
As a final note, you have heard of the African Proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” From what we saw
and experienced, we believe that it also takes a village to educate a child.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Love Baskets
The “Village of Tabernacle” truly worked together again to bless needy and less fortunate families in our community during the 2015 Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.
Perhaps you donated food or money, volunteered time and service, prayed
for this outreach ministry or helped in some other way. Whatever you did,
your contribution played a vital part in the success of our Holiday Baskets
Program! President Walter Brown and the members of Quest express our
sincere gratitude for your help in 2015!
God enabled Tabernacle to provide 381 families at Thanksgiving and 246
families at Christmas with a turkey and basket of food. Fresh produce
(potatoes, onions, celery) was included to
add all the trimmings for making a
healthy, nutritious holiday meal.
Two community health workers from
Southern Jersey Family Medical Center
(SJFMC) were invited to be available Thanksgiving and Christmas to assist
people needing medical or social services. SJFMC offers help with dental or
medical care regardless of ability to pay. This organization also gives assistance to those whose rent, mortgage or utilities are in arrears. The center
maintains a list of low income housing and aids with 1st month rent and security deposit. SJFMC has a tremendous program that addresses maternal child
health services. It was indeed a blessing to have SJFMC on site to help individuals and families gain access to community services!
Quest is able to continue serving the physical as well as spiritual needs of our neighbors because of assistance
and donations from generous supporters and faithful volunteers.
Again, the founder, officers and members of Quest Christian Outreach Ministry (which includes the Soup
Kitchen, Food Pantry, Angel Tree, Clothing, Daily Bread and Holiday Love Baskets) truly thank the “Village
of Tabernacle” for your continued cooperation and awesome support!!!

Women’s Ministry
Coming towards the end of something has a way of getting us to reflect back on events (whether
it’s a project, relationship or end of year) and to look forward to new and great possibilities. As
we come to a close for 2015 and reflect on the last 12 months for the Women’s Ministry, there
were many accomplishments we can rejoice in. We kicked off 2015 with the Women’s Day Extravaganza with the theme, “Women with a Purpose.” We had several speakers exciting us in the word that
lead up to the big day with a powerful word from Rev. Connie Jackson. As time went on and we surveyed the
needs of the women, a “Table Talk” discussion was set in place as women crowded around several tables to
discuss their successes as well as challenges with parenthood, finances, health, loss of loved one, job, forgiveness and a host of other topics. There were sad tears along with tears of joy and laughter that filled the
room as the women supported and encouraged one another.
Other outreach events besides Table
Talk the ministry supported was the
local Community Clean-up to help
make the neighborhood cleaner and
safer for kids to play on the playground (see the pics provided). On
another occasion, the ministry
members provided paint and gave
their time and services by painting
the interior walls of the Providence
House - Catholic Charities shelter for women of domestic violence. Upon
completion, the shelter was made as beautiful as the women staying there. The
In-House Retreat pulled the year together as the theme was emphasized “A
Woman, God’s Treasure, A Journey Worth Taking, Seeking God’s Essence!”
The retreat brought both congregational women and women from the surrounding areas together in prayer and
through workshops.
At the very tail of the year, the ministry selects a family either within the church or community to give extra
support during the Christmas season. The members supported this Christmas Blessing by donating their time,
money and/or gifts for the family selected. This year we had a surprised community donation of $200 from
James Grace and Gary Haman that was presented on behalf of James’ grandparents: Jethro Sr. and Pearl
Grace. The Christmas Blessing is spreading into the community and we thank all the ministry members and
Mr. James Grace and Mr. Gary Haman.
We are reaching new heights in 2016 as we introduce one of our new events to come, the Praise Walk & Nutritionist. We’re also looking forward to an off-site retreat for 2016.
We say farewell to Jennifer Martin (2014/2015 President) and Felicia Ham (2014/2015 Vice President) and
we thank you both for your leadership services. We also welcome Sandi Moore, President and Doris Brown,
Vice President as our new leaders for 2016. We are excited about the new possibilities.

GROWING IN FAITH
Our Spiritual Gift of Faith like the small mustard seed,
Is planted by God and must grow
Into a deep rooted belief that our Father nurtures
As the sun, winds and storms of our life come and go.
While our fruitful day may not readily come,
God continues the sunshine and rains
And counts each budding leaf one by one.
You see, He knows the end before we do
Because all of His promises are definitely true; and,
We must have faith to see the growing period through.
When we begin to mature and bear the fruit as we should,
We will see the positive outcome of those times we waited
And realize that surely our God has been more than good!

Lift Every Voice and Sing
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list'ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has
taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has
brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered.

Connected To The Vine Of Christ
We must stay connected
To the vine of Jesus Christ,
The very source of our faith
And the meaning for our lives
For we will produce much fruit
As we draw from the vine
The nourishment of the Lord,
Which feeds our souls and minds
But if we fail to stay
Connected to the Lord
And abide in His promises
We long ago were taught
Then we will be cut off
Unable to produce
The lasting and abundant fruit
That God so longs to use
For the Lord wants us to be
Reflecting Jesus Christ
So the world will clearly see
The love of God inside
We need to allow the Lord
To take our branches and prune
The part that's become withered
So we'll continue to bloom.
