Attraction in Košice
History
For a long time Košice served as one of the vital commercial
crossroads of Europe. It has always been the center of Eastern
Slovakia, a region of special importance within the Kingdom
of Hungary. Medieval Košice was one of the most densely
populated urban areas of the Kingdom. The first written
record of the city dates back to 1230. The oldest Hungarian
guild regulations dating back to 1307 and the fact that in
1369 Košice became the first city ever to be granted its
own coat of arms are testimonies to the rapid growth of the
city, due to its strategic location and Royal privileges.
The historical center of Košice, whose medieval
city walls were removed in the 18th century, is
today formed by a nearly one kilometer long
promenade lined with exquisite
historical
buildings, once inhabited by medieval kings and
nobility. Together with craftsmen’s houses,
churches, squares and narrow streets, they create
an atmosphere full of legends and stories. You can
uncover these and much more of the city’s history,
science, culture and art at some of the exhibitions
available in the city center, dominated by a
medieval square, the heart of the largest
conservation area in Slovakia.
Present Days
Every step you take in Košice is a
step in a city abundant in history.
Looking at the buildings in the city
center, you will be taken back to a
time cloaked in the cobwebs of the
past.
Košice is more than a main street
full of fantastic monuments and
attractions, which include the most
eastern gothic cathedral in Europe
and the largest in Slovakia, St.
Elisabeth Cathedral. The special
atmosphere is enhanced by the
little streets, alleyways and courtyards of
the historical buildings in the center,
which conceal many exciting treasures.
The many amazing buildings include those
of the Jewish congregation – what is now
called the House of Art or the synagogue
on Puškinova street, with its walls
bearing the words of the large Jewish
congregation that used to be here. You
should not miss out also on a tour of the
remnants
of
the
medieval
city
fortifications – Executioner’s Bastion,
the Lower gateway, the Bastion on
Krmanova
street
and
the
reconstructed
bulwark
on
Hradbová street. Other interesting
sites
include
Jakab
Palace,
Hrnčiarska street – Crafts Lane,
Mikluš Prison, the treasures of
Komenského street or a visit to the
Monastery and church of the
Dominican Order, where under the
carpets in the Presbytery we can
find the ancient Indian swastika
religious symbols (cult symbol in the
shape of an equilateral cross).
You can get to know the city also by its details – take a look at some of the
beautiful balconies of the city mansions, for instance. They all have unique
facades or their own special story to tell. Artistic works are complemented by
sculptures (for example, the sitting Sándor Márai on Zbrojnična street or the
Marathoner statue on Námestie Maratónu mieru (Peace Marathon Square),
plaques and commemorative notices on houses recalling renowned former locals
and residents of the city, or simply praising their beauty.
