ADDING STRENGTH TO REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Qatar Steel Company was formed in 1974 as the first integrated steel plant in the Arabian Gulf. Commercial
production commenced in 1978 with the company becoming wholly owned by the Government of Qatar in 1997.
Today, Qatar Steel is widely recognized as a foremost
leader in the steel industry, extending its pioneering
commitment from an expansive mill site located in
the heart of the progressive Mesaieed Industrial
City - 45 kilometers south of the nation’s capital,
Doha. The Company also operates a UAE based
subsidiary - Qatar Steel Company FZE.
Today the plant with its offices occupies an area of
707,000 sq. meters, adjacent to which is a further
375,000 sq. meters plot reserved for future
developments. The total employee-base of over
1,650 spans 12 different nationalities, and the mill
runs on a 3-shift system.
Inspired to meet the growing demand for steel in
Qatar as well as the region in general, Qatar Steel
has embarked upon a series of initiatives aimed at
increasing its production capacity. The ongoing
modernization and technically advanced expansion
projects are designed to produce world class
products, which will further enhance the company’s
presence in the world of steel production.

DIRECT REDUCTION PLANT
Qatar Steel has adopted the gas based Direct Reduction process technology in its integrated steel complex for
iron-making. Its MIDREX process DR Module (DR1), built and commissioned in August 1978 was the first-ofits-kind in the region with a capacity of 400,000 tons.
In its thirty years of operations, the company’s production has continuously increased and from 2004 onwards exceeded 800,000 tons
annually. This was accomplished by leveraging the inherent capabilities of the equipment, marginal investments in balancing bottlenecks,
upgrading the equipment to meet greater efficiencies, along with various other procedural and operational improvements.
CAPACITY EXPANSIONS
A green field DRI/HBI combo dual discharge 1.5MMTY module
(DR2) is currently undergoing equipment trails to go into
commercial production by April 2007. This plant incorporates
all the features found on an up-to-date Midrex plant. In addition,
the plant uses Simpax - An automated level-2 quality control
module.
SALIENT FEATURES OF SPONGE IRON FROM
DR1/DR 2
Selective premium DR Grade pellets with low elements and
gangues are sourced to produce consistently high metallized
CDRI & HBI.
DR1 produces CDRI exclusively for captive consumption. The
metallization percentage is 93-95% with 1.6% – 2.2% carbon.
The plant consistently achieved >95% availability with >99.7%
operational reliability.
DR2 is equipped to facilitate the manufacturing of HBI and
CDRI. The CDRI produced will contain metallization of 92%94% with 1.8% – 2.5% carbon. HBI produced in DR 2 will offer
metallization of 91%-92% and 1.3%-1.8% carbon.
Steady state operations are expected to result in extremely
consistent quality of DRI & HBI.

ELECTRIC ARC FURN A CE
Qatar Steel has embarked upon various projects with a systematic
approach for improving the productivity of all its operations.
At present Qatar Steel has 3 UHP Electric Arc Furnaces of 80
tons capacity each; two of them are conventional launder type
tapping, equipped with 50 MVA. The third EAF, is EBT type and
split shell design, with a transformer capacity of 70 MVA. A ladle
refining furnace (LRF3) has been installed for the EAF in order
to produce quality steel as well as to increase productivity. LRF3
is in operational since November 2006, due to which the tap
to tap time is reduced from 75 minutes to 60 minutes per
charge. With the installation of a HiJet for EF3 for carbon and
oxygen injection very soon will further reduce tap to tap time.
With the additional of this LF3 and HiJet the production figure
of EF3 will reach a production capacity of 622,000 tons per year.
One more EAF (EF2R) is scheduled to start by May 2007 along
with another Ladle Refining Furnace (LF2R), and a Continuous
Casting Machine (CC2R). This unit will ensure a production
capacity of 666,000 tons per year.
Also it is planned to install one more EAF/CC of 160 tons
capacity state of the art EAF in a green field adjacent to the new
DR with an annual capacity of 1.25 million tons per year which
is expected to be in operation by June 2009.
In order to increase the productivity
• A gunning robot is installed in EF3 which enabled Qatar
Steel to increase the furnace availability. Another unit is
planned for EF2R during the year 2007.
• Installation of PYTOM - the online measurement of
temperature and molten steel analysis is planned during the
year 2007 to further reduce the tap to tap time thereby
increasing productivity. The expected benefits are on-line
control of the EAF process, possibility of on-demand
temperature adjustment, less oiling & re-blows, molten steel
analysis online, less stress on refractories becuase overheating
can be prevented completely.

BAR MILLS
The Rolling Mill is a tandem type mill consisting of Re-heating Furnace, Roughing, inter, and finishing strands. The mill is designed to
produce bars ranging from 10-25 mm plain bars and 10-40 mm deformed bars.
The mill’s capacity was designed to produce 330,000 MT; however various modifications have ensured double this capacity since start
up. Furthermore, a High Speed Finishing Bar Mill was commissioned in 1996, contributing to the expansion of the old mill and adding
the 8 mm size to increase the annual production capacity to 750,000 tons.
Qatar Steel Rolling Mill produces finished products, in keeping with its commitment to quality and productivity. The required billets
are received from the Continuous Casting shop, pre-heated in a Re-heating Furnace and rolled to different sizes.
To minimize the Mill’s down time and production costs, Qatar Steel Rolling Mill implemented the PLC control system in the Re-heating
Furnace, mill motors, and the auto counting machine. Moreover, a straightening machine was installed in 2005 to straighten deformed
coils of 8-12 mm as per the demands of the market place.
Qatar Steel has commissioned its ultra-modern Rolling Mill from VAI POMINI, which will enable an increase in its annual production
to 1.5 million tons of reinforcement bars.
In its facilities in Dubai, a new Bar Mill from the same source with the latest automation features is currently being set up with a capacity
to produce 300,000 metric tons of deformed bars ranging from 8-40 mm in 12 meter straight lengths.

THE ENVIRONMENT
ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
ISO 14001:2004
In addition to spearheading our environment friendly
expansion plans, our Environment Section
coordinates various projects with internal
departments under an Environment Management
Program. The company s most significant
environmental contribution is centered on diffusing
dust emissions, which to a large degree are the
results of technology utilized in the 1970 s. The
revamping of our dust collection system in our
existing facilities is within the scope of these projects.
Qatar Steel migrates to the new environmental ISO
14001:2004 standard as another landmark move
towards these globally accepted environment
standards. The alignment of environmental
objectives, targets and programs with the corporate
HSE objective were considered significant
achievements during this transition. We succeeded
in defining our communication with interested
parties, establishing an effective internal audit
system and reviewing its performance with the top
management. Our success has inspired us to proceed
with the development of an integrated management
system in the near future.
As a part of waste management, Qatar Steel
continues to study various options to re-using / recycling its production waste. Palletizing DR product
dust and EF dust, recycling of Refractory bricks and
extracting iron from slag are some of the programs
under progress. The utilization of used tyres as a
carbon source in the steel melting process is an
achievement in the right direction. This project may
be able to contribute to solving or reducing a major
community waste problem.
