The shepherd’s voice.
Fourth Sunday of Easter
The fourth Sunday of Easter is called The
Good Shepherd Sunday. The image of a shepherd in the olden times is a common image that
many people can easily identify. Shepherding is an occupation
which is common among the people. It is a common job but with
great responsibility. One is entrusted with the care of many sheep.
The sheep must be pastured, lead to green fields, protected from
predators and must be lead to a safe barn. The job of a shepherd is
full-time. He spends most if not all of his time tending his sheep.
Being with them all the time, it is not a surprise that the sheep develop a special and unique relationship with their caretaker. There
is a strong bond developed between the shepherd and his
sheep. The sheep are able to recognize their shepherd in the course
of time. They can recognize the voice of their shepherd. It is compared to a pet dog that becomes close and intimate with its caretakers.
In the Gospel, Jesus uses a very distinct image to describe his
unique and special relationship with his people. Jesus identifies
himself as the Good Shepherd and He identifies his people as his
sheep. He is the shepherd who loves so much his flock. He has a
close connection with his sheep as shown on his familiarity with
them. He knows them one by one. He recognizes them as his
own. His care and love for his sheep are great. He is ready to protect them from anyone who wishes to snatch or harm them. He lays
down his life for them that they may live. He does not only want
them to live but to live forever. He gives them eternal life and he
wants all of them to be with him forever. Such intimate and great is
his relationship with us. This is the relationship that he desires to
have with each one of us.
However, for us to be intimately connected with him, we must
enter and develop a relationship with him. To enter into a relationship with him, we must accept him as our only and true shepherd
and no other else. This relationship with him is exclusive and lasting. To accept him as our shepherd, we must allow him to nourish
us with his body and blood, formed and guided by his words and
live with his commands and teachings. An important requisite of
this unique relationship is the need and willingness to listen to his
voice. This is the challenging part in this relationship with Jesus.
We must be able to recognize his distinctive voice and follow him.
We cannot follow him unless we are familiarized with his voice.
Today, we hear plenty of voices, each one wants to be heard and
given attention. We live in a society where everything is trying to
get our attention. Television advertisements, programs, billboards
compete with other to get our focus. There are many opinions, ideas, ideologies, and beliefs that wanted to shape our minds, attitudes,
and personality. Most of them offer solution and remedy to our
needs. At times, like sheep, we just follow them especially if they
suit our likes and desires. And we get attracted to them. We follow
them. There are too many voices to follow so much so that we get
confused and at times are lost.
Jesus says: “My sheep hear my voice.” Do we really hear his
voice? Do we recognize this voice among many? If we want to
belong to him, we must be able to recognize and listen to his voice.
To recognize him, we must have a conscious effort to do so. We
must be able to get familiarized with him and his voice. This can
only be achieved by finding precious time with Jesus in prayer. We
have to take the time to know him, his life and his teachings. This is
possible if we read and meditate on his holy words. We do this
regularly. A relationship is not developed overnight or by instant. It
takes time. Jesus calls us, invites us to have that special relationship
with him. Today, the Good Shepherd calls. May we have the willingness to listen and be guided by his voice?

Cuarto Domingo de Pascua
El cuarto Domingo de Pascua se llama el Domingo del Buen
Pastor. La imagen de un pastor en los tiempos antiguos es una imagen
común que muchas personas pueden identificar fácilmente. El
pastoreo es una ocupación que es común entre las personas. Es un
trabajo común, pero con gran responsabilidad. Uno se confiado el
cuidado de muchas ovejas. Las ovejas deben pastar, se llevan a
campos verdes, protegidos de los depredadores y deben conducir a un
granero seguro. El trabajo de un pastor es de tiempo completo. Se
dedica la mayor parte si no, la totalidad de su tiempo atendiendo a sus
ovejas. Para estar con ellos todo el tiempo, no es una sorpresa que las
ovejas desarrollar una relación especial y única con su cuidador. Hay
un fuerte unión desarrollado entre el pastor y sus ovejas. Las ovejas
pueden reconocer a su pastor en el curso del tiempo. Pueden reconocer
la voz de su pastor. Se compara con un perro que se convierte en
cercano e íntimo con su cuidadores.
En el Evangelio Jesús usa una imagen muy distinta para describir
su relación única y especial con su pueblo. Jesús se identifica a sí
mismo como el Buen Pastor y que identifica a su pueblo como sus
ovejas. Él es el pastor que ama tanta a su rebaño. Su relación con sus
ovejas está tan cerca como se muestra en su familiaridad con ellos.
Los conoce uno a uno. Él los reconoce como propio. Su cuidado y
amor por sus ovejas son grandes. Él está listo para protegerlos de
cualquier persona que desee agarrar o dañarlos. Él da su vida por ellos
para que puedan vivir. Él no sólo quiere que vivan, sino a vivir para
siempre. Él les da vida eterna y quiere que todos ellos para estar con él
para siempre. Tan íntimo y grande es su relación con nosotros. Esta es
la relación que desea tener con cada uno de nosotros.
Sin embargo, para que podamos estar conectados íntimamente con
él, debemos que entrar y desarrollar una relación con él. Para entrar en
una relación con él, debemos aceptarlo como nuestro pastor único y
verdadero y no otra cosa. Esta relación con él es exclusivo y duradero.
Para aceptarlo como nuestro pastor, debemos permitirlo que nos
alimenta con su cuerpo y sangre, formado y guiado con sus palabras y
vivir con sus mandatos y enseñanzas. Un requisito importante de esta
relación única es la necesidad y el deseo de escuchar su voz. Esta es la
parte más difícil en esta relación con Jesús. Tenemos que ser capaces
de reconocer su voz distintiva y seguirlo. No podemos seguirlo a
menos que estemos familiarizados con su voz.
Hoy, oímos un montón de voces, cada uno quiere ser escuchado y
prestado atención. Vivimos en una sociedad donde todo está
intentando llamar nuestra atención. Los anuncios de televisión,
programas, carteles compiten con otros para conseguir nuestro foco.
Existen muchas opiniones, ideas, ideologías y creencias que querían
dar forma a nuestras mentes, actitudes y personalidad. La mayoría de
ellos ofrecen la solución y el remedio a nuestras necesidades. A veces,
como ovejas, apenas seguimos ellos especialmente si se adaptan a
nuestros gustos y deseos. Y estamos atraídos a ellos. Los seguimos.
Hay muchas voces a seguir hasta tal punto que nos confundimos y, a
veces perdidos.
Jesús dice: "Mis ovejas oyen mi voz." ¿Realmente, escuchamos su
voz? ¿Reconocemos esta voz entre muchas? Si queremos pertenecer a
él, debemos ser capaces de reconocer y escuchar su voz. Para
reconocerlo, debemos tener un esfuerzo consciente para hacerlo.
Tenemos que ser capaces de familiarizarse con él y su voz. Esto sólo
se puede lograr mediante la búsqueda de un tiempo precioso con Jesús
en la oración.
Debemos que tomar un momento para conocerlo, su vida y sus
enseñanzas. Esto es posible si leemos y meditamos en sus santas
palabras. Hacemos esto con regularidad. Una relación no se desarrolla
durante la noche o por la instantánea. Lleva su tiempo. Jesús nos
llama, nos invita a tener esa relación especial con él. Hoy, el Buen
Pastor llama. Que tengamos la disposición a escuchar y ser guiado con
su voz?

THE EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY
December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016
The Jubilee announcement had been made on the second anniversary of
the election of Pope Francis, during his homily for the penitential liturgy with which the Holy Father opened the “24 Hours for the Lord”.
This initiative, proposed by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of
the New Evangelization, promotes throughout the world the opening of
churches for an extended period of time for the purpose of inviting
people to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The theme
for this year has been taken from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians,
“God rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4).
