What is Lent? Lent is a season of the church year that lasts for 40 days (not
counting Sundays) recalling Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness. As Lutherans,
the time is full of prayer, service, and self-examination. Some choose to live more

simply or some other spiritual discipline to follow throughout the season. The
season begins with Ash Wednesday, a day when we confess our sins and are
marked on the forehead with a cross of dust and the words, “Remember you are
dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Lenten Wednesday Meals at 5:30 p.m.
During Lent we will have a Lenten meal prior to the 6:30 pm service on
Wednesday nights. Different church groups have volunteered to prepare
the meals.
Ash Wednesday, February 18, the meal is meatballs, mashed potatoes,
and green beans.
Is Anybody Out There?
Lent is a time for faith practices. Often these days that lead to Holy Week awaken openness to God. One faith
practice common to us is prayer. We are a congregation of prayer. We have a down-to-earth, “God With Us”
understanding of prayer. We confess together that God is present in every moment, and in every conversation.
Every day and minute is invaded by the presence of God. Even when we believe God is in, with, and among us,
we regularly wonder amid life: “Is Anybody Out There?”
On Wednesday evenings during Lent, we will be singing Holden Evening Prayer, and on Wednesday afternoons,
Hymns of Faith, loved by generations. Our messages and meditation will help us consider the journeys of prayer
with activities that help us wonder and participate together.
Lent I
Sometimes prayer takes time. How long, God, do I wait and pray? A prayer station will be set up with a large
clock and calendar. We will write out circumstances over which we pray and call out to God, “How long,
God?” It is a time to hear the promise that God is in the waiting.
Lent II
Prayer can be a time of surrender; a time when we let go and release our life situations into God’s care. On
small white flags we will write out hurts, entitlements, and life issues. We will leave the white flags at the cross.
Sometimes prayer simply brings one to the point of letting go and trusting.
Lent III
Prayer leads us to knock on God’s door for the sake of others. We will hand out buttons. Buttons are little
things, but when we lose one we realize how significant they are. Is there a person in your life who needs
prayer, who feels lost, who needs the grace of God in a special way. Take a button and hold the promise for
them that they are a child of God. Put the button in your pocket as a reminder to pray for them and reach
out to them.
Lent IV
Prayer can be a time when we hold the pieces of our life before God wondering how things fit together. Are
you willing to let Jesus hold the pieces of your life together? Take a piece of a puzzle home with you and
remember that Jesus holds together the fragments of your life.
Lent V
Prayers for the world sets before us God’s mission, God’s love for the world and creation, and helps us to see
beyond our own concern. Take a look at the prayer station with the big world map. Write a prayer on a post-it
note for a situation in the world. Let us cover the world in prayer.

5th Grade Retreat
All Our Savior’s 5th Graders are invited to participate
in the Holy Communion Retreat, held on Sunday,
March 22, from 11:30-2:30 pm. Parents are encouraged
to attend with their child. First communion will be on
Maundy Thursday, April 2.
Supplies Needed
We are looking for some supplies for our Lent Prayer
Stations. If you have old puzzle pieces or four hole
buttons (old or new) that you would be willing to donate,
please contact Melissa.
Mission Trip News
The February meeting for the Green Bay Mission Trip will
be held on Wednesday, February 11 at 6 p.m. We will be
doing a few get-to-know you games, and working on the
Palm Sunday Brunch plans. A reminder that the 2nd
deposit ($75) was due on January 15, and the third deposit
($75) is due on March 1.
“Soup”er Bowl of Caring
The Our Savior’s Youth will be collecting loose change

Bowl of Caring again this year. On Sunday, February 1,
bring along a canned or boxed item and all your loose
change and help Our Savior’s beat hunger! All collections
will go to the local food pantry.
Sunday School Leaders
The Youth and Family Discipleship Committee is looking
for Sunday School substitutes for the second half of the
Sunday School year. If you love kids, love God and are
free on Sunday mornings, you are qualified! Contact
Melissa if you are able to help out.
Palm Sunday Brunch
The OSLC Youth will be serving Palm Sunday Brunch on
Sunday, March 29. The Youth are looking for adult
volunteers willing to help out. If you are interested and
available to help, please contact Melissa at

There will not be an Easter Brunch again this year.
Faith Family Sunday
The Youth and Family Discipleship Committee is
excited about the success of Faith Family Sundays
that began this fall! Five times throughout the
Sunday School year, families will be invited to
gather in the Fellowship Hall (instead of Sunday
School classrooms) to create projects together. The
fourth Faith Family Sunday will be on February 15.
Families will gather together in the Fellowship Hall
to create family trees. Parents and older/younger
siblings are all invited to attend.

help serve at various events held at the church,
such as Sunday morning Fellowship Time,
congregational meals, benefits, etc. If your family
is on the list for the upcoming month, please

Adult Bible Study
The next Adult Bible Study will
begin, Sunday, February 1, in the
Chapel with an introductory
session. The leader will be Vicki
Harrison. The study will then begin for 6 weeks starting
Sunday, February 15 and ending on Sunday, March 22.The
study will use Book of Faith 40-Day Lenten Journey, a
devotional resource connecting forty personal daily
readings and weekly worship with the study of Scripture.
The forty devotional readings included are structured
around seven key petitions of The Lord's Prayer. While the
Bible may be intimidating to many of us, the 40-Day journey
will help engage everyone in devotional reading of
Scripture. Everyone is welcome.

and had back surgery in 2014 which left him paralyzed

God Didn’t Throw
the Clay Away
Sunday, February 8, at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30
a.m. services we welcome Mr. Ren Fuglestad.
Ren created our new bowl and pitcher for Holy Baptism, and chalices and patens for Holy
Communion. We welcome Ren as he shares
God’s relationship with us through the art of
pottery. Thank you to the Altar Guild and Karl
Bakkum for inviting Ren to share his gifts with
Our Savior’s.
“Yet, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay,
and you are our potter; we are all the work of your
hand.” Isaiah 64:8
Several children found a dead robin. Feeling
that a proper burial should be performed, they
secured a small box and some cotton batting,
dug a hole in the back yard, and made ready to
dispose of the deceased. The minister's 5-yearold son was chosen to say the prayer. And so
with great dignity, he intoned, "Glory be to the
Father...and unto the Son...and into the hole he
goes."
Good and Faithful Servant
Christie Clarey has been a member of Our Savior’s since 1995. She serves on the
Altar Guild and is active with her Service Unit, helping out at Churches United
and with other responsibilities for the month. She provides support to many
youth activities and fundraisers. She is always willing to pitch in where needed
and has an upbeat and helpful attitude. She likes to volunteer and feels it is
important for all of us to pitch in and work together to help make our church
strong.
Christie grew up in the Perham area. She and her husband, Pat, have three
children. She works at Robert Asp in a variety of capacities, including school
patrol, lunchroom supervisor, kitchen and library help. She likes to crochet, cook and bake, and the family also
enjoys fishing.

OSLC Men’s Retreat at Camp Emmaus
February 27, 28, & March 1, 2015
Join with other Our Savior's men for a fun-filled over-night (or weekend) at
Camp Emmaus, near Menahga, Minnesota.
There will be ice fishing, broom-ball (possibly), cross-country skiing
(snow permitting), Bible study and conversation, great food, music,
and plenty of relaxation.
Option One:
Arrive any time after noon on Friday February 27. Overnight Friday with Friday night dinner,
Saturday, February 28, breakfast and lunch. Depart Saturday afternoon. Cost: $60 per person.
Kids 12 and under are half price.
Option Two:
Add Saturday night supper and Sunday breakfast. Cost: $86 per person. Kids 12 and under half
price.

God’s Work, Our Hands
Youth need to know they are loved and cared for, and at Our Savior’s, confirmation is just one way that we see that
love and care. Confirmation small group guides are responsible for caring for the needs of those youth in the Our
Savior’s confirmation program, by using the power of the Word and the Holy Spirit. Small group guides meet once
a week with a group of five to six youth in grades 7-9. They not only serve as discussion leaders, but also as
counselors, greeters and friends. Our Savior’s is blessed to have the following people serving as small group
guides for this school year: Kassidi Steffes, Andrea Keene, Tasha Haug, Shellie Wambach, Abby Peno, Richard Rix,
Robin Hamre and Marlene Johnson.
Parents play a very important role in the development of faith in youth, and
at Our Savior’s, we are blessed to have many parents involved each week. Parents are required to attend ten
confirmation sessions throughout the year, but many attend all twenty five sessions. Parents not only attend
sessions to encourage their youth’s faith journey, but also to allow for a time of growth in their own faith. Large
group leaders for this year are Pastor Loren Mellum, Melissa Pickering and Andrea Keene. Large group leaders
present the lesson for the evening, followed by a small group session. Thank you to everyone who supports and
encourages the confirmation program at Our Savior’s.
Weddings take a lot of planning and preparing. As couples begin their walk through life together, they closely meet
with the Wedding Coordinators at Our Savior’s. Sarah Kim is the Wedding Coordinator at our church, and Sandy
Kenz is her assistant. The Wedding Coordinator meets with the couple prior to the date of their wedding to
discuss the details, including dates, times, processional order, and information needed by the custodian, volunteers,
and OSLC staff. The Wedding Coordinator also assists in the wedding rehearsal and is available to the couple
prior to and after the ceremony to ensure everything runs smoothly and on time. Wedding coordinators are an
invaluable resource. We are blessed by Sarah’s and Sandy’s time and talents that they give to wedding couples at
Our Savior’s.
