old for them. My back hurt after one night). I wish the gift

■ Ola Riley ‘56: A Tribute to One of the Old Girls
I have just become the alumnae reporter for the Class of 1958, and as I've communicated with so many of my classmates from that era, I've discovered many Ola Rileys among them. Like her, they have become “do-gooders” in retirement. They help to run their parishes despite some skepticism about their clerical superiors. They work in community
food pantries. They campaign for political candidates. They take courses in art history and, yes, basket weaving. They
teach and tutor. And all this while conspiring with spouses or partners to endure summers at the beach with grandchildren or to attend reunions in some unexpected spot in the far reaches of the North American continent. And so as
I engage in what one of my classmates has called "wringing blood from the stones" of my own class, I hope that I can
chronicle the hidden though noble deeds of the many Seton Hill “old girls” that Ola typified. – Mary Alice Burgan ‘58
hen I heard that Ola Riley ’56 (left) had died in February [2009], it wasn’t my own mortality that
hit me so much as my disbelief that anyone so vital would ever leave this earth. And yet I hadn’t seen Ola for 50 years! And I had known her only during my freshman year at Seton Hill. I had
dropped out for my sophomore year and then taught in the Sisters of Charity cadet teaching program for another half year, so that when I returned, Ola had already graduated. But my image of her
was always so fresh, so available, that when I wanted to think of something happy, I thought of Ola.
We both came from West Virginia, and so we were members of a Seton Hill quartet that took the
Greyhound between Greensburg and Charleston together every holiday. The group included me
and my sister Maggie Heagarty and JoAnne Woodyard Boyle and Ola. We all agree that she was a
model for us of sophistication and alertness and charm. I remember when we Mountaineer girls would pile into the bus
down to Charleston for the holidays, Ola seemed to shine the most. She had short, crisp, curly black hair in a charming
cut, her laughter was infectious, and her jokes were off-the-wall witty.
After the Christmas break one year, she entered the bus sporting a fur stole. It was made of little minks, or maybe
foxes, each one biting the tail of the next, and then joined together somewhere around the shoulder. Although this was
the days before PETA, Ola seemed embarrassed by her Christmas gift. She talked in comic tenderness about the fate of
the "animules" who had ended up around her neck. There were many female ritual costumes in those days, and we all
wore them, even as they made us feel uncomfortable and ridiculous at the same time.
Despite the fur stole, though, Ola was always ready to throw off the absurdities of her era and her gender. One
example was her role in abolishing Seton Hill's only equivalent of a sorority. When I was in my first year there, Seton
Hill had a special club called “The Cwenes.” This club had some of the worst features of special organizations for special people. It admitted only a handful of girls in their freshman year, and it chose them through a secret ballot. The
result was that many young women were passed over, and they felt a sting that stayed with them for a long time.
Another thing about the Cwenes was that they had ornate rituals. Trying to avoid the practices of the Greek system,
the Cwenes based their rites on Old English epics, or an ersatz version of them, that celebrated “queens” of old with
names like Hildegard and Wealthow and Hygd. When Ola was president of the Cwenes, officers from the national
office visited Seton Hill to check on our chapter's ritual practice. And so we met in the downstairs cafeteria to go
through the motions. I sat across from Ola, who was in a comic mood, and we tried to keep from laughing as the whole
thing proceeded.
One of the rituals involved an officer of the club reading an Old English saga, and that task fell to Grace Schiavone,
a classmate from Long Island who had a distinct New York accent. As Grace found her way through the intricacies of
an absurd tale of feminine courage in phony Olde English, barely suppressed snorts and coughs and choking noises
broke out in Seton Hill's mead hall. Ola was able to restrain herself to a wicked smile, but the nuns who were sponsors
of the club sent doleful looks to the other Cwenes around the room. It all came to a head when we were asked to cross
our hands with one another, join a circle, and sing “I Love You Truly” by Carrie Jacobs Bond. Even Ola Riley lost it then.
We hoped that the Cwene debacle might abolish the wretched club forever, and indeed when I returned to the Hill
after being away for a year and a half, there were no more Cwenes. I asked my friend Anne Haenn Bidessem what had
happened, and she told me that under Ola’s leadership, the members of the club decided that the Cwenes was not the
kind of organization Seton Hill should be sponsoring. They voiced their objections to the administration, and like modern Valkyries, they prevailed.
I believe that relatively trivial reform at Seton Hill forecast Ola Riley’s sensitivity to the feeling of others. She went
on to marry, to have four children, and to move to several places with her family, following her husband, Bill Chambers,
in his work with General Electric. They finally retired to Covington, Kentucky, outside of Cincinnati. And then, once the
kids were out of the nest, she began devoting herself full time to more profound social justice causes.
She retook her maiden name, lived on her own, and became a champion for the dispossessed in northern Kentucky. I have Googled her name and found her listed as a worker for the Catholic Conference of Kentucky's Opportunities for Life program, a citizen lobbyist for the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, a founding member of
the Welcome House for the homeless, and director of the Women at the Well group of the Mother of God Church in
Covington. Talking with her friend in many of these works, Sister Dorothy Schuette, I’ve discovered that in all of them,
Ola retained her sparkling good humor and wit. And these were seasoned by a deep spirituality gained through study
of liberation theology. She read in the theology of Teilhard de Chardin and Thomas Berry. And she was always on hand
for civil demonstrations – going with Sister Dorothy to the border region of the southwest and to Columbia, South
America, as well as to the state legislature in Lexington.
Sister Dorothy says that Ola never lost her interest in people’s stories, so that she had a good time in all her good
works. Despite the depredations of advancing age, laughter was always around her. She seemed to be saying goodbye
as the year began. And then on February 20, she died peacefully. Earlier, she had composed a prayer for all the women
she served during her life: I found it on the Opportunities for Life web page. It seems to me a continuation of her own life,
one that welcomed all comers into a community of love. I think I saw that at the start, when I knew her at Seton Hill:
May the woman – your daughter and our sister – find emotional and spiritual sustenance throughout her community
and her family. And if she knows no community or has no family, may a strong one form around her, hold her up, take
her in, love her to wholeness and full participation even as the community becomes more nearly whole in doing so.
For we are all parents to each other, brothers and sisters to each other, Christ to each other. Nothing less! Amen.

Sister of Charity Anita Schulte received the United Way “School Readiness Children’s
Champion Award” during the United Way of Westmoreland County’s Annual
Campaign Celebration on February 24, 2009. As the founder of the Elizabeth Seton
Montessori School (Greensburg) and the Carlow University Montessori Teacher
Training Program, Sister Anita was recognized for her passion in Early Childhood
Education in the area of community service and impact.
“When I entered the Sisters of Charity, my life’s ambition was to be a sister and
serve in the ministry of education,” said Sister Anita. “Little did I know how fulfilling
my life would be. Being given the opportunities and advantages of preparing myself
for such a service-my life as an educator, a partner with parents, an instrument of
God's benevolence-leaves me humbly grateful.”
Sister Anita opened Elizabeth Seton Montessori School in 1970 in the former novitiate community room on the ground
floor of Doran Hall. Twelve years later, the program moved to Mountain View Drive, and then, in 1987, to its present site on
Old Route 30. It was incorporated in 1986 as “The Elizabeth Seton Montessori School of Westmoreland County, Inc.”

They, and others from those times, have become all round

They work in community food banks. They campaign for
political candidates. They take courses in art history or basket weaving. They teach and tutor. And all this while working with spouses or partners to submit to beach vacations

one of my classmates has called “wringing blood from the

we are in now.” Barb graduated from a year’s art history

in Tulsa. Her dire view about our stage of life probably
derived from her accident while eating breakfast one morning: “…this AM as I was finishing my raisin bran, I thought

he was a misogynist, but I don’t care. Sometimes he made
me laugh out loud. And he would understand the significance or lack thereof, of my current bout of vertigo, or how
it feels to have a one-eyed dog. His “Preface to a Life,”
while intended to describe that of a writer, is replete with
gems of universal application. I don't remember when
Thurber died, but I hope they had room on his tombstone to
note that “the claws of the seapuss get us all at the end.”

Nalevanko Lyskava continues watching her daughter’s 9,
11, and 14 year old boys three times a week along with volunteering at their school library and attending their baseball
and hockey games. In addition she goes to “Silver Sneakers” four times a week and says she loves Wii Fit. She and
her husband love traveling and were planning a trip to Lake
Placid in September after their annual Cape Hatteras stay.
Their son lives in Harrisburg so they visit him every few
months. Virginia (Gini) Wesoloski Malley is part of a group
called Treasured Friend that meets weekly at Barbara’s
house. It is a spiritual and Bible study group. Barbara will
be happy to help anyone interested in starting such a
group. She and her husband attend St. Vincent Summer
Theater Productions. They met when he was hired to drive
Barbara and other Setonians back and forth to rehearsals
at St. Vincent. Last year they attended the first Seton Hill-St.
Vincent Couple Reunion…Pat Garvey Regan’s fourth grandchild, Shannon Mary Ellen Regan was born on St. Patrick’s
Day. In September Jim and Pat are booked for a tour to
Athens, Greece and then a cruise to Turkey and several
Greek islands… Lou Anne Wilks Swetonic and husband
Larry finally drove more than 5,500 miles cross country in 22
days. Their furthest destination was Yellowstone where
they met their son and his family from Seattle. Their return
route included a stop in Kerrville, Texas to see Gene and
Rosemary Scott Suess at their beautiful Hill Country Frank
Lloyd Wrightesque home. Rosie has her Class of ‘63 loden
green blazer which she promises to bring to our 50th
reunion. Lou Anne still has her cap and gown. What SHU
memorabilia will YOU bring to our golden celebration? We
should be warming up the concept of 50 years ago with our
current high school reunions…Carol Lee Zeck Ponzio has
downsized to a townhouse community which is about 4
blocks from her house that her daughter’s family has
bought. Carol Lee’s address is now 164 Lancaster Ave,
Pittsburgh, PA 15228. Her phone number is still (412) 5637787. After living in her house 39 years, many of us realize
the major accumulation STUFF she dealt with. Carol Lee is
now ready to take on the challenge of our reunion. Lou
Anne and she are actively seeking ideas from all of us.
What would entice YOU to make the trip to the Hill?...Please
share your thoughts. We are NOT antiques… Annette Kelly
Lehman has a new grandson, Paul Joseph Lehman III, born
on Feb 20, 2009. He joins 14 month old sister Lauren Kelly…
Mary Agnes Aust Roccio was recognized by Cambridge
Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of elementary education. She began
teaching for the Sisters of Charity at Sts. Simon and Jude
School in Blairsville, PA, then continued her career for 44
years at Richland Elementary School. She considered teaching a vocation/ministry, rather than a job. She thanks the Sisters of Charity and Seton Hill University for their major influence in her formation. Her most spiritually uplifting contribution remains the weekly Prayertime for the teachers, which
she began after 9-11, 2001, and which she continues to this
day. Her husband is a retired math teacher, currently serves
the Richland School Board as President, and operates Festival Travel Agency. Their son, Patrick, a Notre Dame graduate, switched careers and is studying to become a nurse
anesthetist at SVC - Excela Health in Latrobe. She states, “I
thank and praise God for all my blessings!”

Not long ago, we mused that the class of ’64 turned 65.
Now the magic number is 45 – for our 45th class reunion.
Here are thoughts from those attending: Laurene Di Gennaro Kristof chaired our reunion and reflected on what
attending college meant to her: “The older I become the
more I realize how blessed I was to have received a Seton
Hill College education when I did. I was the first ‘girl’ in my
extended family to go to college. My parents struggled to
educate their five children. My parents, grandmother, and
the Sisters helped me to become who I am today. When my
daughter graduated, the late Jack Kemp was the commencement speaker. The gist of his message was this: you
are among the world’s most privileged women. You have
been given much. You cannot possibly repay those who
sacrificed to get you where you are today. But you owe
something to the world. Become involved. Be a mentor. Volunteer. Make a difference in someone’s life.” Laurene has
held those words in her heart, serving as the President of
the Alumni Association and nurturing four children. She and
her husband Zoltan celebrated their 45th anniversary in
June. To surprise them, all their children and grandchildren
from Illinois, Louisiana, D.C., and London, England joined
them for a family vacation, the first time since 2003 they had
all been together… Mary Liz Allen Richardson observed
that Seton Hill graduates really do educate their children.
She has taught her children and their friends to “look it up,”
carry on good conversations, and be intellectually curious.
“With retirement has come the realization that our generation has been truly fortunate to have lived in a time of relative prosperity, with advancements in so many fields. I find
strength in family and friends, and my happy, fulfilling years
as a teacher and librarian.”…Mary Ann Corbo Connors
spoke of her parents’ countless sacrifices so she could
attend college, her husband’s support as she pursued her
doctorate, her satisfying career teaching from grade school
to college, and a cherished trip to Italy with her mother.
Mary Ann and Ed celebrated their 40th anniversary the day
after our reunion…When Marge Randazza Callahan said
she had led an “ordinary life” compared to some of us who
had traveled extensively and had challenging professional
careers, she elicited an immediate response. We all agreed
– and realized – that no life is ordinary, that the essence of
life is doing what you can with love and magnanimity,
appreciating each day. Marge’s daughter Megan died when
she was 10. Marge talked about the experience of losing a
child, and of adopting Katie who is now 25 years old and
expecting her first child. Marge has spent much of her time
volunteering in schools, scouts, church, nursing her parents, and baby-sitting for kids in her neighborhood.…Mary
Anne Campalong Myhre, who worked in public health,
shared the sad news of her husband’s death in February
after an 18-month struggle with cancer. “I realize how precious and fragile life is, and the importance of making the
most of every day we have.”…Now that she’s retired from
her work in historic preservation, Norene Halvonik traveled
to Malta with Elderhostel, and was struck by the realization
that Malta’s history is older than that of Stonehenge. We
were all glad to see Norene because she has a calming,
centering influence on us…Sharon Brewer is like a sunburst. Looking as if she’s 47 and not a person who retired
after 47 years in the classroom, she admitted, “I loved
teaching.” When she substitute taught in the high school
she graduated from, she felt “a moment of power” as she
walked in the door. And she felt a moment of hope and
humility when she wrote a reference for a former student
seeking parole…Bonnie Harshbarger recounted several
meaningful experiences she had as an Honors English
teacher. She volunteers now at the Holocaust Center in
Pittsburgh, working with the survivors’ program. She
remembers the Sisters of Charity and her years at Seton Hill
with deep affection and gratitude…Jean Keally Mayes has
lived in South Africa since 2004, and returned for our
reunion and a memorial service for her mother who died
earlier this year. Always a keen observer of nature, she and
her husband Dave made a trip to the province of KwaZuluNatal, the Drakensberg mountain chain, and the tiny independent country of Lesotho. You can be sure Mary Liz will
tell us to look that up!..Kathy Haas Stukus has put behind
her the busy days of her professional life with AT&T and
Lucent Technologies, and enjoys more relaxed days with
her family, traveling, and gardening… Newly retired Paula
Kiles Newman enjoyed her career with senior health and
nutrition, traveled to China recently, and is looking forward
to a trip to Alaska… Priscilla Garvis Naworski was leaving
soon for Germany where she would be sleeping in the room
her mother slept in as a child…A welcome treat was seeing Nancy Flowers Geist, whose husband Art wanted to
attend his 50th high school reunion in Pittsburgh. They drove
from Atlanta, and Nancy spent the day with us. She was
with our class for three years before leaving to teach on
“the plan,” and still feels close to us. Nancy has 4 children
and 7 grandchildren, and retired from teaching and a

■ Joanne Bergamasco Gabriel ‘60 and the Star Spangled Singers
Joanne Bergamasco Gabriel ’60 is the director of the Star Spangled Singers,
an a cappella group of seven professional singing women from the Atlantic
County, N.J. area. The group was formed 10 years ago in response to a trend
to stylize the national anthem. The Star Spangled Singers perform such tunes
as “God Bless
America,” “Let
There Be Peace on
Earth,” and, of course, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” They
have performed for an independent baseball organization
called the Atlantic City Surf, the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, N.J., and just recently for the
Philadelphia Phillies. The Star Spangled Singers receive
thunderous applause and cheers everywhere they perform.
The ambitious singers look ahead to larger and equally
exciting events in the coming year.
career in business… Definitely not retired, Robin Heffernan
Beck, VP at the University of Pennsylvania, received the
Distinguished Alumna Award for her contribution to the
field of Information Technology and her work mentoring
young women. At the award ceremony, Robin said that her
liberal arts education served as a foundation for her life,
and that Seton Hill taught her about compassion and caring. Robin’s good friend Ann Koziar ‘64 attended the ceremony and dinner…Serena Fiore Stevens is deeply committed to providing after-care services in the family’s funeral
home. She also watches over her 92-year old mother, and
spends as much time as she can with her children and
grandchildren. Serena told us of a recent production of The
Sound of Music in which she played the Mother Superior,
and her granddaughter, one of the von Trapp children. To
celebrate the event, her children gave her a framed photograph of Serena in one of her first roles in the local theater,
playing a young nun in – The Sound of Music!…Loretta
Stana is off in the hills of western PA rather than Austria,
keeping the family farm going, and volunteering at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh…Bobbi Fitzgerald Grant was
afraid she wouldn’t be able to make the reunion because
her son’s wife was expecting a baby in late May. But Chris
obliged by being born early – early as in February! Bobbi
works as a Literacy Volunteer and enjoys spending time
with her 103-year old mother who still lives on her
own...Sally Conroy Fullman continues to be involved leading a book group for seniors, participating in The Big Read,
and coordinating Healthy Bones programs. Nominated by
the National Osteoporosis Foundation, she served as a
patient reviewer evaluating research proposals on osteoporosis in Washington…Other classmates who couldn’t be
at the reunion in person, sent greetings through notes,
emails, and phone messages. Terry Burson, Lou Calvario
Brown, Sister Marie Crona Miller, Charlotte Eller, Margi
Fiori Slavonia, Mary-Ann Kerekes Salvatore, Mary Beth
Reilly Barrett, Majda Tavcar Ambrozic, and Marie Vitale
Furgerson extend their best wishes to all… Longer letters
came from Jo Anne Wells Miller who has two sons in their
30s, and has taught both as a full time and substitute
teacher where she managed to keep a class under control
and still get through the day. Jo Anne writes glowingly of
Patricia Aquaviva Gabow ‘65 and the excellence of Denver
Health where Patti is the CEO. “I feel so fortunate to have
gone to Seton Hill and met truly remarkable people.”…
Rachel Conroy Noblett lives in Dayton and wrote about her
two children and first grandchild Eden Rachel, born in April.
At Eden’s baptism, Rachel used a blanket that Carol Wilson
had crocheted for her own daughter Katie. “Seton Hill gave
me the strength to make a home and life for me and my
children after my divorce. We have been very happy even
though it has been a challenge.”…Barbara Hetzel Tocci
observed that “Each time I read about another milestone
reached under Dr. Boyle, I am impressed and grateful for
her leadership. She had just started her first year of teaching when we were freshmen.”…Sheila Delaney works at
the Department of Justice, currently on a case involving
children with Autism and developmental disabilities denied
admission to a private preschool, an alleged violation of the
Americans with Disabilities Act. For the last few summers,
she has been a host to interns from the Belfast area as part
of the Washington Ireland Program that brings university
students to Washington for summer internships and leadership training. One of her dreams is to revive her efforts to
learn Italian and live in Italy for an extended period of time.
Buona fortuna!… Mary-Ann Kerekes Salvatore has made
her 14th trip to India where she spent 3 weeks at Mukti Mission before going to Delhi to visit a friend…Sue Carmen
Patrick and her husband were on an Alaska cruise during
the reunion. Sue enjoys retirement, and volunteers one day
a week at the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center in
Pittsburgh. “It’s been very rewarding seeing many of the
working poor get quality health care. The sad thing now is
there are over 800 people on the one-year waiting list for
dental care. I think that as we age, we find we need less
‘stuff’ and become more aware of those who don’t have
even the basics. Family is more important to me now. We
are spending Christmas in Santa Fe where our son lives, so
we can share the holiday.” …Diana Flood Murphy-Greiner
realizes the importance of family too. She had hoped to
attend the reunion, but instead, was at Prince Edward
Island for a memorial service….Barb Edwards MacKenzie
wrote saying that her heart was with us at the reunion. “My
husband of 43 years and I traveled to Hawaii to celebrate
our anniversary in February and his being cancer-free for
one year. Upon returning, he began to experience some
problems, and a brain scan showed that the cancer had
gone into the brain. He began treatments again and was
admitted to the hospital where he passed away May 13th.
God gave us this miraculous time in Hawaii and blessed us
more during this past year as Stu bravely dealt with lung
cancer, attributed to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.
Stu lived his life to the fullest with his faith in the Lord and
strong dedication to family, friends, and anyone he met
along life's path. My faith is what keeps me going each day
as I face life without my best friend. To all my classmates:
cherish your memories each day and keep God always in
front.”…Lastly, Joan Lynch Lewis’ husband Richard tells us
that Joan died unexpectedly in early June from a massive
blood clot that reached her lungs. She majored in Latin at
Seton Hill, and taught at the Charlotte Country Day School.
They had two sons and a daughter, and had been married
for 41 years. Memorials may be made to Charlotte Country
Day School, 1440 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, for the
General Endowment for Scholarships Fund, In Memory of
Joan Lewis… Reading our news, we cannot help but feel a
certain sadness at the losses and loneliness some of us
have experienced. But there are lessons also – to live in
gratitude, to comfort those in need, to see and pursue what
is important, and to embrace the future with courage. After
all, we are Seton Hill women… Michael W. Dabney wrote:
you might remember me as a 20-year-old teaching Biology
labs and learning to play the 'cello, fresh out of Oberlin in
1964. I was at SHC for two years, continued to grad school
at Cornell, married the editor of a lab manual I wrote with
my advisor (my wife died in 1993), and finished graduate
school in Honolulu. I have lived there since 1969, and since
1994 have been director of Hawaii Pacific's Teaching and
Learning Center – faculty development. I'm delighted to witness SH’s growth, over virtually all of which you have
presided. Good for you! My favorite memory: spending
spring holiday in 2004 driving all over the Midwest in a bug
with Sister Ann Infanger and Sister Mary Leon, who were
planning a new science center. I was put up in convents.

Pat Wesner Gill writes Tom and I retired to a golf community in Fayetteville, Pa. (Penn National), near Chambersburg,
about four years ago. We built a beautiful home and welcome any of you to come and visit. Our three children – one
in Greensburg, one in N.J. and the other in Northern Va. –
have gifted us 7 beautiful grandchildren. We keep very busy
visiting and helping out with all – attending the usual soccer, baseball, football, gymnastics, swimming and how can
we forget the annual dance recital. Tom stays majorly in

of us from the Class of ‘67. Our location here in Penn
National and having a daughter living in Greensburg provides us the opportunity to be within reach of special functions at our alma maters. Our daughter also graduated from

Notes from the women of the Class of ’77: Jill Beattie
reminds us of the days when the sign at the bottom of the
hill read “Welcome Daughters Home Returning.” We are all
forever joined, thanks to our days on the Hill. Our triumphs,
as well as our trials, are uniquely shared. Jill writes: “I sold
my house in the summer of 2007. Then I moved into a three
story, commercial building on Main Street in Monongahela,
which was built in the 1870’s. The second floor, which I
inhabit with my toy poodle Gypsy, has been renovated will
all modern amenities but still retains the charm of
its Victorian architecture. The Monongahela Historical
Society museum is located on the first floor while a local
studio photographer uses the third floor for portraits during
warm weather months. I had been living in my bright and
cheerful hidden gem for less than a year when I was diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer. So, the summer
of 2008 began with chemotherapy. In order to best deal with
the craziness of my health situation, I chose to keep my
daily routine as much as possible. I continued to travel into
downtown Pittsburgh where I work for a commercial real
estate company. My sister Vicki is a 16 year breast cancer
survivor. She also works in Pittsburgh and accompanied me
to and from work every day. Vicki would also come and sit
with me during her lunch hour. Likewise, my office colleagues were cooperative and compassionate during my illness. A few of my friends insisted on taking me to the hospital for appointments and always were offering to help out
with errands. I was blessed to have family, good relationships and tons of support from my workplace and the community where I live. The only people missing were the
paparazzi! The only sad part of the journey was losing my
38 year old cousin Julie, who fought breast cancer for four
years. She was the bravest person I've ever known. Julie
died the day after my last cancer surgery. She was always
on my mind. Now, after eleven months, my treatments are
over. I am feeling stronger every day and have maintained a
positive attitude and sense of humor. My bone scan in May
was good. I am now a survivor like so many others. It’s
been the best of times and the worst of times. Good health
and blessings to everyone!”…Necee Regis, our global traveler, recently returned from a tour through the islands of

jumped on random ferries to see where they'd go, ate pistachio baklava on the Asian side of the Bosphorus and found

for my travel and food writing, which people can see samples of here: www.necee.com. I’m also polishing up a novel
set in Istanbul, and will let all Setonians know if I ever get it

■ Susan O’Neill ’79 Designs Outstanding Costumes for Theatre, Dance and Opera
As a professional costume designer and invited member of New York’s United Scenic
Artists, Susan O’Neill designs costumes for theatre, dance and opera. She is also a published children's literature illustrator and studio artist. Having spent 11 years as the resident costume designer/coordinator for The Pittsburgh Opera, and 9 years as the resident
designer for The Dance Alloy locally, her costumes designs and builds have been toured
to three continents, and featured on major network television.
She has also designed or supervised costume builds for New York City Opera,
Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Opera, Montreal Opera, Seattle
Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh
Ballet Theatre, and Attack Theatre. Her modern dance designs were featured at the
“Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival” receiving recognition by the New York Times as a
fresh and important part of the event, and in 1999 she was nominated as Pittsburgh’s Outstanding Established Artist
of the Year.
A member of Seton Hill’s class of ’79, O’Neill has enjoyed an adjunct teaching position at her alma mater since
2002. “The transition at the University has been remarkable to participate in and watch come to fruition,” she says.
“What an amazing professional training opportunity we are offering to our students! It is a gift as an instructor to be
an involved part of the Seton Hill Performing Arts Program.”
Recent professional credits include Pittsburgh CLO Cabaret’s “My Way,” and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s remount
of their 2004 world premiere “Straight Life,” both on stage in spring of 2009. For the past three seasons, O’Neill has
also been the resident costume coordinator for the CLO summer musical season.
“With the Grand Opening of the Seton Hill University Performing Arts Center taking the majority of my focus this
fall,” she says, “I have still made time for a few other exciting projects.”
O’Neill, along with fellow alumna and playwright D.W. Gregory ’80, had her work featured at the 2009 Philly Fringe
Festival in September 2009, with the world premiere of D.W.’s new play “Salvation Road.” Susan is also delighted to
have been invited to Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota to offer a Millinery and Costume Crafts master class,
and to be designing costumes for the Bemidji State University production of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.”
While theatre has been front and center in recent years, O’Neill is passionate about dogsled training and racing,
and after a hiatus of several years, is hoping to return soon to her participation in Alaska’s Iditarod.

Preparing for our Seton Hill College graduation in May of 1980,
our friend, Sharon Kubinec,
remarked that one day she
would be working for Sears out
of the Sears Tower in Chicago.
No matter what the challenge was, Sharon worked with
determination and professionalism to achieve her goals. Her
career at Sears started upon graduation from Seton Hill and
lasted for 25 years. She worked her way through the management system from an assistant auto center store manager to one of four regional managers of the Sears auto center
department. And yes, she did achieve her goal of working at
the Sears corporate headquarters. Upon Sears dissolving
the auto centers and becoming a part of the National Tire
and Battery Company, Sharon returned to western Pennsylvania, making Washington her home. While in Washington,
Pa., Sharon took on a new challenge of store manager of
the Robinson Town Centre Sears location. And, she was
able to accomplish these achievements while at the same
time battling breast cancer.
There is a Biblical verse that describes Sharon’s psyche:
“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one, finds
a treasure. There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend,”
Sirach 6:14. Sharon was indeed that faithful friend to so
many. Seton Hill may not realize this, but Sharon mentored
several women who needed direction in their education and
careers; and Seton Hill was the place that Sharon endorsed
and where they ultimately chose to go to school. She held
her years at The Hill in the highest regard, and wanted to
share what she benefited with others. Having known
Sharon since 1976, our tight circle of friends also benefited
from having known her. Breast cancer never stopped
Sharon from achieving her goals or enjoying life. She invited
us to realize that life is more than waking up, putting in our
day’s work and returning to our homes. According to
Sharon, life is meant to be relished and seen as a daily treat
to be thoroughly savored from daybreak to day’s end.
Sharon is the daughter of Joyce Kubinec, Seton Hill College class of 1972 and the late Richard Kubinec. In addition
to her mother, she is survived by a sister, Donna Steele, and
her friend, Melissa Easter; two beloved nephews, Michael
and Matthew Steele; two aunts, Jean Kubinec and Sara
Jane Kubinec, and several cousins.
Before Sharon passed away, she completed the quilt that
is pictured here. She chose the name “Renewal,” and when
it was entered in the Three Rivers Quilt Festival in April 2009 it
received a blue ribbon. And yes, that too seems fitting.
Sharon continues to set challenges! We miss you, Sharon!

Suzanne Fair Angelicchio ’99 and Joseph Ponsi ’92 developed a partnership between Philips-Respironics and Ponsi Shoes to aid in the creation of
an optimal work environment for the associates of Philips-Respironics.
Through a company program at Philips-Respironics called the Exchange
Program, employees are challenged to work as teams to develop and
implement ideas to provide a better work experience for all company associates. As the mentor for one team, Suzanne supported her group in developing an idea to provide all associates with orthotics to help prevent back,
leg and foot issues from having to stand on their feet all day. Associates
would be able to use their insurance to pay for the custom orthotics after obtaining a prescription from a chiropractor or
podiatrist. Suzanne read about Ponsi Shoes and her alumnus colleague Joe Ponsi and gave him a call. With Joe’s assistance the team was able to coordinate a program of educational meetings, doctor evaluations and custom fittings. 174
associates benefitted from this program. Congratulations to Suzanne and Joe and the Exchange Program team for such
thoughtful and innovative work.

■ A Rare Breed Indeed Complements Work of Art Therapist Straja Linder King ‘97
Registered clinical art therapist and educator Straja Linder King ’97 and her 8
year old Shiloh Shepherd Tangus have been helping people with trauma, disabilities, bereavement and illness for several years. Specializing in animalassisted therapy, Straja’s work as an art therapist in Calgary, Canada helps
young and old alike. Straja has pioneered art in healing from a spiritual/nature-based perspective and started the Strawberry Tree Studio, the only
open art studio in Calgary. Certified in Healing Touch for animals and EGALA
(equine assisted therapy), Straja is a highly skilled clinician, having taught and
supervised for over 10 years at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Tangus is a huge asset as animal assistance is very powerful when combined
with her therapy work. He was honored in 2005 with the Hero Award from the
Pet Society of Northern Alberta for protecting a woman from two black bears.
Says Straja of her gentle companion, “There’s something in his eyes that just
beckons you to come closer. I can’t train him to have that kind of incredible
compassion for humanity. That just exudes from him.”
