Add intimacy and a festive splash of colour to
your al fresco dining space by stringing together a
dreamy outdoor room using hemp twine, bamboo poles

Cut flowers are often imported and will die soon anyway, so
pot up native shrubs or flowering plants and use them as table
centrepieces throughout the Christmas season. Later, you can

Keeping the menu simple and seasonal keeps costs and
stress levels low, allowing you to enjoy the party too •
Serve local and organic food and wine, and local boutique
beers • Shop for produce at your local farmer’s markets •
Aim to serve lots of seasonal salads and less meat •
Choose some dishes to make in advance • Delegate tasks
such as pouring drinks and brandishing the barbie tongs •
A keg for big parties will reduce costs and the number of
beer bottles to be recycled • Soak labels off empty wine
bottles and fill with chilled water and lemon zest • Create
festive decorations using native greenery, pinecones or
other natural items • Use colourful tea towels as large
napkins; buy in bulk or sew your own to reuse or give
away • Encourage outdoor fun by providing kids with
bouncy balls, hula hoops and bubble-blowing mixture
made with eco-dishwashing liquid and glycerine.
